I am a grateful fan of Ms. Rowling and of her overwhelming Byronic Character, Severus Snape! Please check out the first chapters of each fic (except for "How Can I Tell You," which is on Chapter 2) to see pictures of the Heroines.
Admins' Note: Livvy6 died suddenly on February 22, 2012, leaving behind her husband, six-year-old daughter, and seventeen stories well-loved by the TPP community. All who knew her—including those in Harry Potter fandom and all of us, here—are richer for having known her.
Requiescat in pace, Livvy. Always.

250 points to Gryffindor for finally having one student with the guts to tell Severus Snape just how badly he behaves, how much he hurts people and how unfair he is! I love the Hermione/Severus stories, but I am sick and tired of all those stories where it is obviously sexy when Severus treats Hermione like dirt, and it is accepted and forgiven, because "pooooor Severus" have issues! He is not the only one who had a crappy childhood and school years. Treating Hermione (and Harry and everyone who ain't Slytherin) like he does makes him a even worse person than his father, James and Sirius, because he knows how the words and neglect hurts, he knows how it affects you for the rest of you life, and still he finds it excusable and acceptable for him to do so "because nobody have hurt as much as him.....". After this rant I think I will grant Ginny another 50 points to make up for the 75 I am going to take away from Ron and Lavender......I am sooooooo looking forward for the next update!

What an incredible chapter! Can Voldemort touch anyone's mind? Has he tinkered with Hermione's? How bad is her physical heath this time? I'm anxious for the next chapter.
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
Oh, no. He can only reach Ginny this unique way because of what happened when Ginny was possessed by Voldemort her first year. More will be explained in the next chapter or the one after that, I can't remember, but soon! Thanks,Livvy

Boy, this chapter is a lot to process. It seems like a lot of things have contributed to Hermione's state of mind, but it seems like she's always held people at arm's length. I wonder what happened before Hogwarts to make her keep her distance? I'm guessing the uncontrolled magic made her "too different" from the other kids, who in turn treated her badly. But I guess what I want to know, why is just Hermione and not all of the muggle borns, having difficulty fitting in and making (more/female) friends? If she thought a little more of herself and had a support group/friends, she might have reacted differently to the whole situation.
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
Well, when we first saw Hermione, she was bossy, a know-it-all and was a perfectionist with homework and was bossy with the boys about homework and studying. An eleven-year-old doesn't become that inside a vacuum. Obviously, her parents were real sticklers and pressured her to get the best grades and that was the most important things. Sure, that worked, but puberty kicks in and we saw in the books how she was getting angry with Ron's lack of attention to her gender and the only time she EVER cries at Snape's rude remarks at her is when he says that comment about her teeth. Hermione is different from the others. Her magic is powerful, she is a unique and intelligent, mature young lady, but still (and fandon has gotten this wrong) she is a giggler and does talk with Ginny over lust potions and "girl things." I don't know of any other Muggle-born girls mentioned and Muggle-born boys, there is only Justin Finch-Fletchley. So there is your support group. But she had support from teachers, and Ron and Harry, and Hagrid about her being Muggle-born. These things just build up over time and then a moment comes that just ignites the fire that has been building over the years. But Hermione will have to realize she has to see the worth in herself and there will be the right wizard for her - who will appreciate her studious nature and intelligence and will love her exactly as she is. Snape already does, he's just being a massive jackass about it all - the prat! He's got major boot-licking to do to make this up to Hermione and get her to even listen to his feelings for her.Oi Vey!Livvy

Thanks for the insight. About Snape, too funny and I can't wait to see it unfold. LOL, let the games begin.

O_O oh my...... That was intense!! Gotta say, I love Ginny in this...heehee... But Ron and Lavender?!?!?! OMG! I knew their cannon characters are dense and you're kinda keeping with that, but lavender saw what happened to Hermione and she still thought that a date was gooing to help her??? I love this!! It's schockingly realistic but at the same time you can actually feel the emotions behind your characters! I can't wait to read the rest, especially Severus' reaction to Ginny screaming at him. Does he realize that he never apoligized to her or had it not just crossed his mind?
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
Yeah, well Lavender probably thought that was all she needed: male attention and approval and bob's your uncle! everything is all squared away. Well, we all knew the girl is shallow.Thank you for your compliments. Yes, Severus knows he has to do something. He's wanted to for a while but felt like auch an arse he couldn't get the stones to do it. But now! Holy Crap! Then later, he's going to try and completely muck it up badly and then he will have one of those lightbulb moments and he'll start changing his tune. Thanks!Livvy

WoW! That's a huge can of worms and it's exploded all over everyone in Albus' office! [Go Ginny!] I can empathize with both Severus and Hermione in having been overlooked, shuffled to the background, and made fun of, but Ginny's got it right, that doesn't give anyone the right to turn around and abuse others in turn. What Snape does is an automatic response to being belittled. Back anyone into a corner often enough and they fight back. But poor Hermione has just crumpled in on herself with no outlet for her emotions.I can't wait to see what sort of 'band-aid' Albus is going to try to slap on it. Gin has made it a little messy for one of Albus' lemon-drop flavored, twinkle-eyed cover-ups.
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
Ooohh! This is where it's gonna get good. Albus is going to pull one of his patented "For the Greater Good" out of his arse to allow Severus to do some Dark Magic to deal with this mess with Tom and Ginny. I hope you like Snape's personal thoughts on the matter. Yeah, things are going to get really freaky. Thanks,Livvy

I have been reading this from the first, and I am sorry I have not reviewed before... This is a powerful and intense story. I find myself checking TPP every day, several times a day, looking for an update! You have really managed to capture everyone's feelings and make us feel them too. I am on the edge of my seat with every chapter!Keep up the fantastic work, and I will wait (with little patience!) for the next chapter!

Wow, intense chapter. I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. That's a frightening connection Ginny has with Voldy. Yep, that was a surprise alright. It was really the farthest thing from my mind, but it all makes perfect sense.I liked Ginny's parallel about Snape and the Marauders. In a way, she's very right about his actions. He deserved her wrath for his actions, no matter what his motives were.Part of me wishes he would just come clean to Hermione about his feelings for her. I know he's a professor and she's a student, and he's all closed up, but it would help her a bit, I would think. I know he did a little of that in the previous chapter, but not nearly enough.
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
You are sooo right. He really did not come clean enough, but believe me, he will and he will repeatedly. Hermione is not going to make this easy for him - not that she should! He will have to learn to put that damnable pride of his away if he wants to get the girl. Thanks!livvy

Well well well... i never expected that.. But it's fantastic. And go Ginny (just like her mother), how i could hex her for talking to Severus like that tho! But he did need a good telling, i hope he realises now, and does something about it. But it's going to take a lot of effort for Hermione to forgive him.
I appreciate the quick updates too x.x

Thank you! I'm glad I was able to surprise you. Believe me, things are going to start getting really freaky and weird as the Order tries to figure out this whole blasted mess. Then there is Snape, who is ready to pass out from all this info and STILL has to make things right with Hermione. Boy, it just sucks to be Severus Snape right now! lol! Thanks,Livvy

Excellent turn of events, I think Ginny is spot-on with dealing with Severus. He really should think about what he says to people. I also agree that even though he didn't mean to hurt Hermione with his words and actions, the fact of the matter is he did. I also feel he should have repercussions for his actions, whether he meant for the results he got or not.

Wow! So much to say. First off, though it is painful, your take on Hermione's history (as told through Ginny) is so interesting and creative. In canon, she never was really treated as a girl, and top that off with Krum and Snape, and I think that Hermione's reactions in this, though sad, are a very realistic and unusual take. Next.. Ginny. Wow. As a dream-conduit of Voldemort. Creepy! I wonder what they are going to do about that. As for Snape, after hearing Ginny, I also wonder what he is going to do. Especially since he has feelings for Hermione as well. Excellent, and I can't wait for another update.

Good arguement. It's hard to represent many points of view, and strong emotions while still moving the plot, but you did extremely well. I was rather surprised you used the Tom/Ginny connecton, but I think it makes a really unique twist.

This Hermione you have written is unlike any other Hermione I've read since shipping HGSS. If J.K. Rowling's Hermione had been pushed to the extent that yours has thus far, I honestly believe that she would have dealt with her grief privately -- just like your Hermione. I'm glad I took a chance on this story. I was a little wary of the issue of cutting, but Hermione is so realistic and I'm dying to know how HGSS will endure this tragic situation. I hope Severus treads softly. :)

My heart goes out to Hermione and to Severus. In order to help her, he will have to resolve his own demons... he will have to own them, he will have to relive them, he will have to come to the same understanding of himself that he is trying to get Hermione to see about herself... and it won't be easy. This kind of self-discovery and self-acceptance is never easy, but it is essential.Severus must be the stronger one now, because Hermione doesn't have the capacity for it... yet. Could this be what Dumbledore had in mind when he set Severus the task to watch and observe her?Your story is written with superb delicacy and tenderness for your characters. Well done!Beth

Finally, Severus has taken the first baby step in being honest with his feelings. He must be scared out of his mind. Poor Hermione, she must feel totally isolated and unworthy. It would have been different for her if she had been sorted into Ravenclaw but then history would have been changed, hmmm. I can't say I understand what makes her deal with her feelings this way but I hope that SS can overcome his own issues to help her. The people we look up to, do influence our perceptions of ourselves. Sometimes sadly so. My sister used to say she cut her self because she didn't feel anything and that was the only time she felt anything. Sadly, like Harry and Ron, I felt totally out of my depth and helpless and ignorant of how to help her.
Response from livvy6 (Author of Longing)
Most people do. They want to help, but they don't understand so they feel impotent. Hermione has to deal with herself because what it comes down to is her perception of herself. Snape's words wouldn't have affected so much if she didn't already think there was some validity to it.Thanks,Livvy

oh poor hermione! as a girl who has been in a very similar situation (one that could have easily happened to hermione if severus hadnt intervened), I understand her feelings, and even her reasons behind her self mutilation. this story speaks to my heart and soul, and i think you're doing a wonderful job of running through the emotions that cutters go through, and the burdens we have to bear. thank you for breaking from the norm of the 'hermione-gets-raped' stories and showing readers a darker side of these tales. the ones that dont end up with dumbledore letting them ride off into the sunset.

How sad and touching this chapter is. I felt sorry for both of them for very different reasons, for Severus because he really dose see how at fault he is and for Hermione because she can't seem to forget his horrible words to her and still thinks she is worthless as a women. It is touching because I think they may now try and work together to help each other. Great chapter looking forward to the next one.

Boy, I am glad that you are updating quickly! I do have to say, I have read some of your other stories and that's why I stuck with this one. I didn't think I would like this one because of the content (cutting) but I was wrong. You have handled the subject matter beautifully - so - now I'm hooked and I can't wait to see what happens next!

It will take time, and there will be a new kink in things in the next chapter, but rest assured, Severus loves Hermione. He's mucking things up majorly, but his love will shine through to her. It will take time. Thanks,Livvy

Severus' observations are so astute and his feelings are so loving:
"He wanted to kiss each tear away and rip the pain from her and swallow it. He would gladly take on all her hurt and suffering if she would only be the Hermione he had always knownthe Hermione he loved."
but he has to walk that delicate line of professionalism to be able to help her. He needs to somehow communicate what he feels and sees (maybe a hug?) but I don't know that a romantic relationship will be possible for a long time. She needs to heal, needs her education, and the power imbalance isn't healthy now.
Sigh. That doesn't mean I don't want HGSS. :)

You are very observant. It's true, Hermione and Snape have that fine line while she remains his student, and they both aren't the models of people who are well-adjusted. They will need time to muddle through. Thanks,Livvy

At least Lavender was looking out for her even if she gossiped. That was rather horrible, but very in character. Snape is an idiot, but maybe he can get through to her.
