Victory did not make life perfect, and two years on, the shock of surviving the war is finally starting to wear off. Waking to everyday realities, Hermione and Severus discover the delights and pains of living - all prompted by a ladder. HG/SS eventually, but HG/RW and SS/NT for the first bit. Multiple award winner.

I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Reviews for Ladder
Yet another great chapter. Please keep 'em coming.
Mandy.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. More soon!
I don't know if I left a review for the last chapter or not. I kind of think I was floating off in a pink, lust-filled bubble; drifting on wanton wishes to be Hermione... Same thing goes for this chapter, only it's the second time through so I had enough cognizance to write too much without actually saying anything of worth.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Ooo, a 'pink, lust-filled bubble' - I hope it was fun! (grins wickedly)
I'm really glad that you enjoyed both chapters and emerged somewhat cognizant!
I do like the way that his thoughts stay focused on the 'task' at hand, even if his lower quadrants wish to dominate the proceedings. So slytherin... teehee!Another intensely driven chapter, making us eager to look on like a bunch of peeping-toms. Wicked! *big grin*Looking forward to the next chapter. As always, cheers!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! He does have a certain amount of focus here, but probably only because it serves his ends! Slytherin, indeed.
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter and its intensity. If you're wicked, what does that make me? (laughs) More soon!
Response from mmesnape (Reviewer)
...... Wicked-ER?? (wink and a laugh)
I loved his point of view, can't wait for more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked SS's POV - he's such fun to write! More by the end of the week.
<>Am I the only person who wants our shero to choose door number three? For the sake of your self-respect, Hermione, it doesn't have to be either-or! Though faced with the prospect of such pleasures, I certainly can't blame her if she does end up in her Severus' bed. He doesn't read like a lover here; he's very canon-Snape in some ways...very predatory.
Well, however this ends up, you know I'm waiting with baited breath for more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Not the only person, but since HG/SS shippers are reading this, you may be in the minority! (laughs)
You raise really good points that I've been thinking about for some time. I refuse to define HG based soley on the 'man in her life.' You're also right - this SS isn't emotionally commited here.
I hope you stay with me as I explore both of these issues and their impact on the story!
Response from Keladry Lupin (Reviewer)
Happy ending or not, I am SO staying with you. As the story progresses, I find myself more and more worried about this Hermione's well-being. She'll be satisfied, but will she be happy?
These reviews aren't criticism, or even concrit (at least, they aren't intended to be either); they're just my gut reaction to what's happening. It's an amazing story!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I wasn't taking them as criticism! In fact, I'm very flattered that you're thinking this much about the story. Some days I even consider e-mailing you to pick your brain!
Response from Keladry Lupin (Reviewer)
Please do; I love collaborations!
Always intoxicating hearing Snape's inner take on things.
The further this develops the more I think Hermione needs the sort of friend who'd give her a good shake.
But what's interesting here is that she doesn't seem to have any clear candidates for that sort of friend -- she's very isolated. I'm wondering whether that will change as the repercussions start growing.
Response from Elisabeth (Reviewer)
P.S. Just wanted to add after reading Keladry Lupin's review above: Me too! Maybe she'll end up needing a break from both guys, although I'm shallow enough to hope for a big moment with Severus first :).
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad that you've noticed her isolation - with HP dead and RW her boyfriend, she is solated from having just a friend.
As for HG's love life - I have a lot to say but don't want to spoil anything. Argh!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the chapter!
Reviews are like chocolate?! This story IS chocolate -- delicious, seductive and addictive!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you enjoy it so much and let me know! (nibbles chocolate)
Now, you've got me firmly hooked. Severus chasing Hermione is one of my favorite themes, especially when well written.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you stuck with it to get firmly hooked! I only hope you like the way he chooses to chase her.
How dare Hermione leave my dear Severus like that!!??? Hope you can help him along the ride!! Great story, love it, every update some more!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (laughs) He is left frustrated on many levels! But he also shouldn't assume that she has no integrity (she wouldn't be HG without it!). I'm really glad you're enjoying the story!
Great library scene--both Her and Him chapters. Although Him chapters are more free thinking. I'm ready for some follow through and Ron dumping.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm not sure about the library bit, but I'm really glad you liked both chapters! Hmm, his chapters are more free thinking - fascinating! Do you mind expanding on this? I'm really curious.
Response from Maddie (Reviewer)
My bad, the scene was after the library. As for Him being more free thinking, I meant that he is always observing, testing the waters, evaluating the results, changing techniques based upon his observations, and making and altering plans to accomplish his goal of making Her his lover. Her seems to do plenty of observing and feeling, then becomes overwhelmed by guilt and she does not seem to be using her brain for logical thinking. Is she really going to let Ron trap her into a marriage simply because he placed her in an embarassing situation. She was going to break up with him. Granted it would be extremely ackward, but perhaps a "maybe" or "I can't answer right now" would have worked. However, not as good a story certainly.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks for the explaination. Hmm, maybe I'm subconsciously making him the more scientific? (Since I'm a scientist.)
Response from Maddie (Reviewer)
That's good because he is a scientist, too (in Muggle terms).
Slow, almost frustratingly so, but so very worth it. Liked this part quite a bit, and am very much looking forward to the next.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I watched The Meaning of Life recently and have John Cleese's admonition to not stampede for the clitoris in my head! (Although I suppose it's good I didn't watch it before the first two chapters.)
Whoa! Well, he looked at it a bit differently, now didn't he? A change in tactics - that sounds slightly ominous. I can't wait to see where you take this next! My eyes will be glued to the screen until you update again. I will be waiting patiently until you update again.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! That's the fun of the alternating POVs - I get to explore how much we all take our understanding of other people's actions for granted. (evil laugh) Next chapter by the end of the week!
Now that we are coming down the final stretch it is making me think of what kind of ending you'll decide on. Along the lines of the My Fair Lady film ending perhaps? Satisfying but somewhat open-ended?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Urm, we'll have to see about the final stretch thing. (blushes) I'll be posting soon on my lj about the story's overall length.
It's been too long since I saw My Fair Lady, but I will say that I don't like things tied up too neatly.
Ooohh I like the way you play their points of view on the same events. However, I am dying to know how she will let Ron down without totally alienating him and his entire family, plus all their friends... *insert dramatic music here* I like your Severus, though. He's a lusty fellow, I think and I also think that them having to wait for each other will have a more positive effect on their upcoming (I hope) relationship. Cheers! GG
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You raise a really good point about the Weasley situation - time will tell how it all plays out.
I'm glad you like this Severus, and I agree that it might be best (esp for him) for him to not win her over so easily!
After reading this chapter the phrases predator stalking its prey and lamb to the slaughter instantly spring to mind, a carnivore salivating at the thought of tearing into its most perfect meal. She's almost ripe for the taking, he need only preen her a bit more.Hell bells!! Another très excellent update. I cannot wait to see how the second interlude fares.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! [Hells Bells - I love that Buffy episode!!! (which may not be what you're refering to, but what the heck)] I'm so glad you liked the chapter.
Well, he's tried obvious predator mode, and it didn't work. We'll have to see what he gets up to next in the interlude!
Oh dear. Severus changing tactics- time to run for cover.Fingers crossed Ron doesn't hijack both the interlude and Hermione into a surprise wedding in similar circumstances to his proposal. How many acts are there? I kind of want the drama over with and SS/HG together yet I also don't want the story to end.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yep - he's changing tactics, and the next chapter should outline some of what that is.
As for how long 'Ladder' will be - I'm making a decision soon and will post on my lj!
Wow, Hermione doesn't stand a chance against him does she. I'm really enjoying the story.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you're enjoying the story. Severus is quite intense!
Well that was stupid of her, but who could say no in front of all those people? I don't think i could.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad Hermione's reaction was reasonable for you under the circumstances.
Yum. Boy, Herms, yer in trouble now. Yeppers. Big trouble.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it and sound it yum! He's certainly a lot to handle (grins).
Oh, FANTASTIC! (Like the Weaselys, I feel all caps are sometimes required.)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and I LOVE the reference to chapter 3!
this chapter was far too short!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. As for why the chapters are of a certain length, I've got something on my lj about it, if you're interested.
Wow, that's a kiss! Fantastic! Poor Hermione, it's hard to fight that type of temptation. She has a ton of thinking to do now....Does she want passion or security? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for passion!
Being a scientist in your past shouldn't be a dark secret. Anyone who can use 'brownian motion' and write a scene like that on the same page deserves praise! or chocolate!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad the kiss worked for you! You're right - she's currently faced with deciding between passion and security. We'll have to see if that's all that effects her decision.
Glad you liked the Brownian motion metaphor!
hot
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed it and found it hot!
I could feel the heat rolling off them. Very nicely written.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you found it sensual. Thanks as well for the comment on the writing!
Poor conflicted Hermione... looking forward to more as always.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and that her internal conflict came through for you.
