Waking to everyday realities, Hermione and Severus discover the delights and pains of living - all prompted by a ladder. HG/SS eventually, but HG/RW and SS/NT for the first bit. I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Very nicely done - you handled this perfectly! I was concerned for a moment that she would rush in - and that Severus would reacty poorly. Of course, I haven't seen his POV yet, but hopefully he understands that he moved just a bit too soon (although, I do understand him getting caught up in the moment).
Just lovely, my friend! I can't wait to see what's next!

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it! I was walking a tightrope with this scene - trying to not have it go too far either way. Thanks for letting me know it worked for you!
I love both Severus and Hermione in this story. The tension you have built is riveting.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked the story and the characterizations!
Even though part of me wishes that Hermione had thrown caution to the four winds and indulged in some lemony goodness with Severus, I think she made the right decision. Surely Severus should have known that she's not the type of woman to jump from one man to another in the space of a single night -- and that in the long run, he'd have a hard time trusting her and probably wouldn't want her as much as he does if she were? Good things come to -- and for or with (bad Gigi!) -- those who wait!

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Lemons are tempting - but as you say - not always for the best to rush into!
Well Snape did have rotten timing. I mean really... LOL. But yes, just give her time.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yes - it's the same night! I'm glad you agree and like the chapter!
wow, this story is much further along on this site than it is on Sycophant Hex.
anyways, I'd just like to say that I love this story! I can't get enough of it :)
so... is Hermione and Ron's relationship over now? And Severus is going after her! I highly anticipate your updates :)
well done.

Thanks! It's great to hear how much you like my story! As for what happens next, keep reading! The next chapter is now in queue.
Hey there, I loved this story, however, I am a little hesitant to give you this review! You do realise that chocolate, and reviews as you so name them, are both very bad for you? Dear, you need to cut back! We wouldn't your computer getting for too big for it's hard drive, so cut back a little!
Absolutely fantastic story!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the story! [And the new reserach shows that choco is good for you! Though the reviews live here instead of on my computer, so it's safe.]
I hope things go well for HG and SS. I like the fact that he felt bad about HG being unhappy. That was really nice of Tonks, but I don't think it was just because she dated SS that she could read him. I always got the feeling their relationship was very casual, and they both hid any real emotions (even to NT never using her real face). My feeling is that Tonks is one of those compassionate people that can read others peoples feelings and emotions. They observe. It's just like Tonks knew that HG was unhappy. I think it's that she cares for and observes her friends feelings. Actually she's the exact opposite of Ron who was with HG for a bit and doesn't know her at all.You know I wonder what Tonks would say if she found SS had "bee with" HG, in her house, while he was sstill dating NT. I wonder if she'd be angry, or maybe upset, or maybe not care at all. I think we know how Ron would react. LOL Anyway a wpnderful job with this story!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm very glad you're enjoying the story and this characterization of Severus.
Tonks is an Auror, and that implies at least a certain ability to read people. But I think you're right - she notices what her friends are feeling because I think she is a compassionate person in canon. Interesting that she's acting as Ron's opposite - thanks for pointing that out!
What an absolutely wonderful story!!! I'm so happy to have found it!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Welcome aboard! It's so good to hear that you're enjoying my story!
whoo hoo. getting closer to confessing feelings. Love this story!!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you're enjoying the story so much!
PLEASE hurry with the next chapter!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I put the next one in queue, so it should be up soon!
Oh my! Clever, clever Snape. He's building a good foundation for the rest of their...lives together? Hmmm.
I am quite interested in their research too. That's a tribute to your writing, you know. Brava.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You've got it - he is doing that, whether he's completely conscious of it or not.
Thanks for the compliment on my writing! I wasn't sure if the researchy bits come across.
Ooh the tension!! They could single-handedly power up London at this point, I think!! Great chapter!!! GG
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and the UST. I had no idea it was that electric, though - thanks! More to come soon.
Ah, another good one.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! If not for you, this chapter probably wouldn't exist!
I like his patience and his plan. *nods* It's working.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked his change in tactics and appreciate the timing involved!
Also, thanks for rec'ing my story to DeeMichelle!
Two birds, one stone, I see. He might or might not have been able to complete his research on his own, but now he's getting help with that and taking up residence in a slowly-increasing slice of her life. How very Slytherin. And you've worked in some ideas on how Arithmancy might work, which is something I always love to see. A nice treat for a Sunday morning!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! He can be quite clever in the very best of ways. But it may be three birds with one stone!
I'm glad you enjoyed the Arithmancy - I'm mixing it in with Potions (my area of expertise).
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
Three? Hmmm. Intriguing!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Clarification - three for the overall story - SS only sees two.
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
Oh, I figured that. I'm just pondering whether three will turn out to be what I suspect it is.
just letting you know i'm still in for the climb. actually up till now you've managed to keep me quite off balance (in the most positive sense). this chapter was a bit less surprising but an enticing read nonetheless.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad I've kept you guessing for the most part. Hmm, I'd never considered him changing tactics to be unsurprising, so thanks for the feedback. What about it was too predictable? (so that I can get better in the future)
Why do I get the feeling that Severus is going to get caught in his own trap? It looks like Hermione will be caught too, so I doubt he'll mind much if he does get caught too.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You're spot on! I'd worried I was too subtle about the changes in him, so thanks for letting me know some of it came through!
That's just how I envisioned Severus' plan: to lure her using intellect! Severus is a very patient man indeed. I also notice that Hermione hadn't spared much thought for Ron.I've noticed a little incoherency: in the first part, Hermione says she's been avoiding Severus for the last two months. If I recall correctly, she last met him on Aug. 31st, and the action there is set on Sept. 30th. That's only one month.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Thank you for letting me know on the timeline inconsistency! I fiddle with the time frame all the time (ha, ha), and it caught up with me!
I'm glad his new approach is working for you. You're right - when she's with SS, she's so engaged that she doesn't think of RW much.
I like how you have Severus patiently "courting" Hermione. As a previous spy he would know that confidences are best won over time.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you like his approach and find it in character for him - I'd been thinking Slytherin - but you're right - the spy issue plays in as well!
Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how much I'm enjoying your story. I've been following it since it first appeared here. You do an excellent job keeping the pace and the characters quite realistic. Keep the chapters coming!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! It's good to hear from you, and I'm glad you're enjoying the story! Thanks as well for the comments on pace and characterization - it's good to know that they're working. Next chapter soon.
Severus, you sly dog, nice change in tactics!!This was an excellent interlude. I like how he's been biding his time, giving Hermione some space to allow her to feel safe. Now seems like a good time to shake things up a bit. :DThe next update cannot come soon enough.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked his change in tactics! As another reviewer noted, RW can't compete in this area. It also happens to be just what she was longing for intellectually. Sly devil!
Softly, softly, catchee monkey … but I do hope Severus is paying as much attention to Hermione’s research into the Wolfsbane’s reactions as he is to her reaction to him.
The dual perspectives are an interesting device. I look forward to reading more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! As for how engaged he is with her mind, all I can say is take another look at his thoughts about it. More soon!
Severus is being suprisingly patient isn't he?! I think he has it all planned out!
I look foward to seeing another visit to the story from Ron, but hopefully only for a dumping scene!
Keep it up, You're doing great. I love it!
Mandy.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the story! SS is quite patient when it suits him. Next chapter soon.
Sorry, I'm bad about getting reviews out. But don't take it as an indication of your work, I love this story and your writing style is most compelling.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I love hearing from you whenever you can review. I'm really glad your enjoying the story. Thanks for the comment on my writing!
Hmmmmm...ver-r-r-r-ry interesting. Severus clearly knows very well that one of the biggest sex organs is in fact the brain -- and that goes double for people of an academic and/or scholarly persuasion. (I should know because I'm that type of person -- and at least for me, I'd prefer to date a highly intelligent man of somewhat average appearance than a highly attractive man of somewhat average intelligence. If a man has a good brain AND has a British accent to boot, the odds are that he's already two-thirds of the way towards making me attracted to him.) Severus clearly understands that the best way to Hermione's heart is actually through her head -- and that's something which one simply cannot imagine Ron being able to comprehend, not even in a fanfic.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm like you - I have to be intellectually engaged for a man to hold my interest for very long. I'm glad that you like the way he's going about it and that it makes sense!
