Victory did not make life perfect, and two years on, the shock of surviving the war is finally starting to wear off. Waking to everyday realities, Hermione and Severus discover the delights and pains of living - all prompted by a ladder. HG/SS eventually, but HG/RW and SS/NT for the first bit. I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

I hope you are planning just a little bit more to the exchange between Severus and Portrait Albus. That was a really interesting way you had him finally confronting that situation.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm very glad you enjoyed the chapter and the confrontation btw SS and AD! There's more to come with them!
Wow, powerful writing again. Its good to see a bit of closure for them both so they can enter a new chapter of their lives and leave the past behind them.
Well done, Ubiquirk.
Mandy.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you liked the chapter! You're spot on - they both needed to deal with these things so that they could move on!
Well, I'm glad some of the Weasleys came around anyway. I think they are taking it way too personally... Bout time Snape visits his friend.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Yep - about time he faced up to all of that and dealt with it!
Oh Severus *tissue crunched against nose and mouth and wiping tears away". We all are there with you! If Albus forgives you, forgive yourself!Oh, good sequence with Ginny and Moine too.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and that the emotions came through for you! I'm sorry I made you cry though!
Ooh, where will you go from here? Severus's meeting with Albus (even if he's only a portrait) has left me all but speechless.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter! I left a talented writer such as yourself speechless! High praise indeed!
Response from ayerf (Reviewer)
High praise to be called a talented author by one such as yourself!
You know, I don't cry. I just don't cry over fanfics. I quit reading, take a break and return to the text with my eyes dry. Tears fall freely now. The last scene was emotionally so very intense. ubiquirk, you are a master. A writer extraordinaire.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! It's so good to hear that the emotions came through for you, but I'm sorry I made you cry! Hopefully it was a good, cathartic cry.
Now, their past is really behind them. I suppose it was necessary to enter in their new relationship, though two months seem a long time. I feel for Ron, but I'm confident he'll get over it. A question: why did you chose to have Ginny use the diminitive "Mione"?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! You're right - they both needed to work through things to move on. She was with RW for 2 years - 2 months to get over it is nothing (experts actually say you should take half as long as the length of the relationship).
I'm very specifically using names to convey how people feel about each other. The diminitive comes when Ginny feels a bit better about HG. Nicely spotted!
Great chapter...and you revealed what happens to the ring! :D She couldn't move on until something was done about that, after all...Can't wait for more! And I love your word usage, very good and original too, without a lot of the phrases/references that become fandom cliche.~HR
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Yep - I laughed about the ring last time because I knew it was coming - good on you for spotting that it was important! Thanks for the note on my writing!
Severus' encounter with Albus tore at my heart and touched my soul.It isn't often that I am reduced to tears whenever I read a story. It's pretty rare in fact. This chapter had me scrubbing the wetness from my cheeks several times. My eyes continue to well up as I recall your words while writing this review. You have outdone yourself, my friend.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm amazingly glad you liked the chapter! Its' so good to hear that the emotions touched you (though I don't want to make you cry!). I think SS really needed to deal with this to heal.
I'm so glad Severus had something to stew about these past few months besides Hermione. I hope he and Mr. Merry Sunshine have a good, long talk.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and that SS does have a bit of a life! (laughs)
Guilt is a powerful force, in each of them. Until you believe that you deserve to be loved, instead of to be punished, there isn't much to find in relationships. First the deal with the internal struggles and obstacles, and then they can turn towards one another. Beautifully staged and written, as always, ubi! :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and the issues it was dealing with! You're spot on - there are things they both needed to work through!
Thanks for the update interesting chapter, I imagine you have the feelings of molly spot on, in regards to how a mother would react to her sons broken heart. One small thing about this chapter though, I found the transition to ss a little confusing I thought we were still on hg and had to read through it again. I blame it on noisy kids interrupting me while I read, but it could aslo be because at this point I am so used to reading from just one of their points of view each chapter, that I forget to be aware of the change while reading the transitional chapters. Great chapter, as always though. Anyway, can't wait for more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you liked the chapter and Molly's reaction! The interlude chapters are always a mix of HG and SS - this one is very similar in structure to chapter 7.
??? Why is Snape acting so strangely? I think I missed something in the translation. Guilt complexe suddenly coming through? I'll wait to see the next chapter, it might answer a few questions that I have. Not my favorite chapter, but the story has been great so far. I'm eager to see the next one. Cheers!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the chapter even if it was a bit confusing for you! Yes - SS has been worrying about killing Albus since chapter 4, and Minerva calls him on it in chapter 18.
Oh, so sad! Now we see the missing piece - SS can't have a real anything with anyone till this is sorted. Lovely job.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you liked the chapter! You're right - he needs to work through this!
I like it. I love updates...and would write something better if I was more awake. It's a good bedtime story. :) G'night
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm very glad you liked the chapter (though I wouldn't have thought this one was bedtime story material)!
Emotionally wrenching scenes, well-done
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and the emotions involved!
Great!!! As always!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you liked the chapter!
Another good chapter. Thank you.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you liked the chapter!
I must say that I'm happy I found these updates today.I needed the warmth of your story in my mind this morning.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I really glad you enjoyed these last 2 chapters so much and that they helped you start your day!
Aww.... what a lovely chapter. I especially liked how patient he is with her.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I really glad you enjoyed the chapter and Severus's actions!
After reading both points of view, the question remains as to what Hermione truly wants for herself. Will Severus be a part of of her grand plan? If so, is she just looking for physical release or can she build a future with him? If not, will Severus ever recover from what I am sure he will deem as 'an idiotic notion that having and admitting feelings is worth it all?'Two very wonderful chapters!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yes, she's a bit shaken the evening of this due to the break up, but she at least cares about SS enough to not jump into something blindly. As for what she decides, I don't want to give spoilers, so please keep reading!
Response from LaiksMarei (Reviewer)
*whines* Not even a teensy-weensy one? *bats eyelashes*
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Okay, the eyelash batting worked! Here's a little-bitty one: it's not heading for an angstfest.
Excellent (as usual). Kept me on the edge of my seat. Hope you update soon. Keep up the great writing.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked the chapter so much! I only hope the seat was a cushy one! More soon!
Good chapter! But, what became of the ring? Did she throw it away, or...?~HR...hoping for the throw-away option
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! She pocketed the ring at the beginning of the last chapter, as for itf future, keep reading.
Poor Severus can never get a break.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it even though SS didn't get what he wants yet! But she only just broke up with RW - it hasn't been an hour even!
YIKES! Bad Severus! Bad, Bad, Bad! Wow, what a fabulous comparison of points of view. Good thing neither of them were indulging in Legilimency this evening--they might have killed one another. Excellent work!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so very glad you enjoyed the chapter! It's also good to hear that the differing POVs are interesting to you for the differences btw SS and HG that they show!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Reviewer)
Totally! It's like Roshomon from Hell! ;)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Okay - now you're got me really curious. Why do you think they might have killed one another if they'd known what the other was thinking?
Response from Fawkes_07 (Reviewer)
Herms is interpreting his actions through her personal filter, that he's doing this gentlemanly courting in her time of need, and backing off respectfully when he realizes she's too upset to start something new. She has NO CLUE that he's spun away enraged 'coz he was so SURE he was Gonna Get Some right up until she said no. She wants a real, involved, sexy love affair with an interested partner, while Sev's coldly considering forcing her! Ron's focus on Quidditch scores may seem cold and unattentive, but that pales in comparison to what Sev's thinking. Sure, she might enjoy that if done playfully, but certainly not right at this moment when she's reeling from the breakup. And while Sev might not necessarily feel like clobbering Herms if he knew about her desire for him, I think he'd be scared silly by her depth of emotion. And of course he's viewing it through HIS own filter: this all-or-nothing, stark, sad POV of "it's either Do The Deed or Nothing," discounting any possibility that she might actually care about him and/or want something other than a cheap trick. Consciously, he just wants an uncomplicated bang-buddy like he had in Tonks, right? While it's fine for HIM to realize that ultimately he's hoping for more, I think if Herms threw that up in his face, he'd balk Big Time. That's why this chapter is so brilliant! It's an illustration why eyewitness testimony is so unreliable, and why no two people can tell the same story.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't even realized that I'd made him quite this cold! But that's also why he needed to have the realization at the end of this chapter and work through some more personal issues in the next! Thanks!
