Victory did not make life perfect, and two years on, the shock of surviving the war is finally starting to wear off. Waking to everyday realities, Hermione and Severus discover the delights and pains of living - all prompted by a ladder. HG/SS eventually, but HG/RW and SS/NT for the first bit. Multiple award winner.

I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Reviews for Ladder
The alternating POV is fantastic! Every time I finish reading a 'her' chapter, I always wonder what Snape was thinking. The beauty of this story is that all I need to do is be patient and you will indulge me. Great job!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you like the alternating POV and that you're still wanting SS's chapter even if you've just read HG's. It's good to know it's working! Thanks for the nice comment on the frequent updates - it's nice to know they're appreciated.
Ooooh, terrific. All I could think of while reading this was the movie version of "Tom Jones" and the scene in which two characters seduce each other by watching each other devour a tasty dinner. (I don't know why Hermione's POV didn't have the same effect on me.) How much more unrelieved tension can two people take? They've GOT to do something soon, and by that I do not mean go out and find a nice pastry shop together!!!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I haven't seen that movie, but I have seen Tampopo, which is a Japanese film that's about nothing but food sex.
(Maybe because HG wasn't actually doing any seducing?)
As for what happens soon, well, the next chapter should answer that. All I'll say is that there is no pastry shopping!
Oh, the torment! Can't wait til the next! Good stuff.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! Next chapter by the end of the week.
I love the inner dialogue of Ss and HG! And this Snape is really witty. Tonks is definately not right for him, he doesn't even seem that "close" to her. Poor RW, I have a feeling he may end up hurt but you never know. I know this is not a romance, and that it may not be SS/HG per se, but I notice it says SS/NT and HG/RW for the first part. I hate to sound eager for the couples to break up but what is constitutes the first part? LOL The story and writing are top-notch.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy hearing their thoughts - it's part of what makes 1st person fun to do. I'm also glad that you find Severus witty.
You've caught me! I'm going to end up being a bit more fluid with my interpretation of 'first bit' than I had originally planned. The characters have taken over! I will say that one breakup will occur sooner than the other.
Thanks for the comment on the writing - always motivational!
Response from Ronni (Reviewer)
Oh well, I guess I will have to wait patiently for the hoped for break-ups. I do hope SS and NT break it off first. I just can't stand them together (I'm trying LOL). RW I do feel a bit sorry for and I do think despite not being right for each other that HG and RW have more of a relationship. Of course I'm usually wrong in everything so SS and NT will probably last longer. Sigh. Still, you are a great writer and it's so nice that you respond t your reviews.

You'll have an answer within the next three chapters!
Reviews are wonderful! It's taken me years to work up the nerve to put my writing out there, and you all make me glad that I've done so.
okay so clearly he is going to be pursuing Hermione, her scent is imprinted on him and all that. When is he going to dump Tonks? He is so derogatory about her with his inner dialog. Its quite funny.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you find Severus funny - I agree and find him quite witty with an edge. As for your question - keep reading!
Oh thanks for dropping the clichéd black clothes all the time. I cannot believe that. I think Snape would loosen up in his choice of clothing just like you wrote. The little spat between Hermione & Snape was good fun for this reader. Snape completely deserved that slap. Naughty!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Well, I only dropped the black a little bit - if he put on the frock coat, he's back to it! But you're right - taking off the coat is symbolic for his character changing - good call. I'm glad you like the slap!
This is so good....
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you're enjoying the story!
love the balancing act between knowing what is about to happen and yet still compelled to read Sev's precice thoughtsi don't think that Hermione's Griffindor nature makes her more predictable, but her responces are more easily interpreble in retrospect
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you like the alternating POVs and that having HG's first isn't ruining your reading of SS's - that's something I'm very concerned about, so feedback is great!
Great chapter. The way SS is looking at Tonks now is so telling. I loved the thought that it was so "garish". I have a feeling that that' hsow he sees Tonks. I could also see that HG really does love RW he's just not for her. Her wistful sigh when she looked back at Ron says it all. She loves him but just is not in love. And it seemed Tonks was excited (maybe not by SS) but her interaction with SS was more sexual than loving. The mirror at the end was great. I have a feeling that SS with all of his relationships including Tonks have been about sex. I don't think the woman in question was that important (any woman could have straddled him like Tonks and I think he would have gone with it). Now, his "being" is attracted to a particular woman. It must be weird for him. At least that's my take. Now I'm curious as to what happens. Does he give up Tonks and whoever else and try to woo Hermione? Will he give his all to Tonks to try to forget Hermione? What will he do. And the same goes for HG. What does she do now. I confess I'm hoping and looking fowrad to a break-up between SS/NT and HG/RW (if there is one). I do like RW and NT just not with "our SS and HG" LOL A fascinating story and I'm enjoying every minute!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you found his use of 'garish' telling. I like your take on Severus - it tells me that items I hope I'm putting into his characterization are coming across. You're once again very insightful in your reading.
To not spoil what is going to happen, I won't say exactly what you're getting right on what's next though. (Gotta keep a little mystery!)
I'm so glad you're enjoying the story!
How far up the ladder the split between the current pairings will be? From this and the previous chapter, the cracks in the metaphorical ice are widening. Or is that the woodworm in the ladder spreading?Severus's reaction to the slap is interesting. It makes me wonder if anyone else has dared to do it before...Looking forward to more!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You're right - the cracks are starting to show. The ramifications of that will occur at different times in the chapters to come.
He's definitely intrigued - glad that came through!
I find myself saying "Girrrllll.... you know you ain't right for him on so many levels." Not that I don't like Tonks but, she is way too out there for SS. So maybe that is why I'm loving the story so much. Got to see it through. And thanks for the quick updating.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You're so right - the NT and SS of this fic could never work longterm (other writers have been able to do so though). More about them in the next few chapters.
Mmmhmm. I'll bet it stings *real* *good*.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yep - in my mind she really wapped him. The good part , though, may not be the physical sting. (she says cryptically)
Please write - it's like chocolate - I can never get enough. ;) I like the use of Him and Her chapters with the chapters being short enough that the action is then quick enough to keep the excitement going without that bogged down feeling similar stories to this setup can get. Can't wait to see the 'battle' progress...
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you like the alternating POVs. Also, thanks for the comment on the pacing - it's deliberate on my part, but it's always good to hear that it's atually working for the reader.
Ooh, you've definitely piqued my interest. I look forward to more!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you found it interesting. More to come next week!
Firefly? A love of the bug, or are you a fellow Browncoat? Great penname either way!
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
Heh, it's the bug. The screen name predates the series by several years. Thanks. :-)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I thought I'd check - I love the bugs and the show. (The word, in and of itself, is fun to say - firefly - maybe it's the built-in alliteration?)
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
One of these days I need to see the show from the start. I only ever caught a couple of mid-season episodes, and was pretty lost. However, Buffy and to a slightly lesser extent Angel completely addicted me, so by rights, I ought to love it once I know what's going on. :-)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Great - longtime Buffy fan here!!! Angel, too - but like you, I find it slightly less compelling. Firefly, the litle of it there is, is wonderful.
I love this chapter. The way he's looking in the mirror, just seeing the imprint of hr hand, there's just something about that. I'm wondering if NT was so vibrant because of Snape or someone else in that room.. And thank you for your answer/comment to my previous post. Yes, you made me feel lots better. Lots and lots of chocolate to you, one sweet lady. I can't wait to read more. Please take care.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad the last line made an impression on you (oops, a pun) - I had hoped it would.
Yes, just what else could be going on with NT? You'll have your answer within the next three chapters!
I'm glad my reply made you feel better! (eats a big piece of chocolate) You take care, too.
This was an intriguing first 'act'. I'm curious to see how Snape and Hermione resolve the problems and the tension between them.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. It's going to take two more acts to satisfy your curiosity, so more ahead.
Fantastic! I haven't read a good SS/HG in weeks, it seems. I really love going through the scenes from both perspectives and your take on the characters following the war. Well done. I especially like how you're not making Ron completely undesirable, but merely wrong for Hermione.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you're enjoying the story. It's also good to hear that the alternating 1st person POVs are working for you.
Thanks for the comment on Ron - I actually like him as a character so I didn't want to bash him. I'm glad that came through. He is, as you say, wrong for Hermione though.
I haven't any concrit to offer -- it's a delicious little story thus far, I like your broody, not-entirely-civilized, Snape... Look forward to reading more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I love your description of Severus - 'not entirely civilized,' indeed! Concrit is cool if youu find something as the story keeps going.
Naughty, naughty!
Eagerly awaiting next installment, even if it is an interlude chapter!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Does that mean little old me is naughty? (attempts innocent look, which quickly dissolves into smirk)
The interlude chapter will serve an important purpose (or maybe not - but it seems necessary to me).
Response from Myst (Reviewer)
Severus, You making us wait . . . I figured I'd leave it wide open! Hmm, that guilty conscience getting to you?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Is that supposed to be a halo on the smiley? I'm not buying it!
not nearly long enough, but it will suffice as long as the next chapter is almost in que. I love how this story is coming together, keep up the good writing, and I look forward to the second act.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you like my writing and the story! I'm sorry to say that chapter length is going to stay around 1000 words, but I will try to keep them posting regularly.
LOVE the last line.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it! I had hoped it would resonate. It is also supposed to parallel her final line in chapter 5.
Like a nice piece of dark chocolate metling on the tip of one's tongue, I can only think of wanting more....The build-up is good amd makes me want to see more. More soon, please!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Mmm, dark chocolate - my favorite! I'm so glad you're enjoying the story and like the build-up (that let's me know that things I hope I'm doing are coming across)! More soon.
One cannot use the excuse of "Not tonight dear, I have a headache" when there is a highly qualified Potions Master within 500 feet.Another well written chapter!! It will be interesting to see how they make the transition from hostile to something more amicable. I look forward to the next installment.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the use of the headache excuse - I'm not sure that Hermione even got the full implications of it until Severus pointed it out (but subconsciously - ah, ha!)
Thanks for the comments on my writing. The transition may not be smooth, but will hopefully be interesting.
With the threat of Book Seven coming out in mere months, I find that with both chocolate and Snape, that I really am not getting enough. With the end in sight and the prospects of no more Snape, that there just not enough chocolate to fill the void. I am developing this desperation for much more Snape than I've had before... Hey! Now that JKR is actually done with him, do you think she'll let us have him??
Now, about Hermione... she's not dumb. She won't be settling for 'ginger' when she can have - chocolate!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Book Seven looms! If the worst occurs, you'll find me in AU territory.
You're right, Hermione is highly intelligent, but sometimes intelligence isn't the only factor influencing one's decisions.
This is an excellent story, my friend. Thanks for posting. I shall be returning the next two shortly. :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Since you're the first person to ever see it, your support means so much!
(I may never have gotten the guts to post if it weren't for you!)
