Victory did not make life perfect, and two years on, the shock of surviving the war is finally starting to wear off. Waking to everyday realities, Hermione and Severus discover the delights and pains of living - all prompted by a ladder. HG/SS eventually, but HG/RW and SS/NT for the first bit. I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Reviews for Ladder
I really think Tonks need to get with Ron and Hermione and Severus should start shagging like bunnies right now... but i suppose i must wait...*sigh* patience never was my strong suit...lol
great chapter... WE ARE SO CLIMBING THE LADDER!! lol

Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm afraid I'm going to be trying your patience for a while longer, but within the next few chapters there will at least be UST. Gonna make you CLIMB for the shagging!
OH THE TENSION OH OH I CAN HARDLY BEAR IT
Please please, more UST!
:begs:
And thank you for updating so soon...
(aka Theodicy)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! There will be more tension of the regular sort, which will then be followed by UST!!! I love it as well, so there will have to have more.
We’ve shagged nightly, so why haven’t I orgasmed lately? I wish I knew.Oh my dear Hermione, you do know but you are trying desperately to ignore it like the good girlfriend you are.I was pleasantly surprised to see an update listed today!! I am not complaining though as I love this story. This was semi-sad chapter. I can feel the forlorn in Hermione's thoughts and actions. She wants very much to be good for Ron and vice versa but the seed or rather rung of doubt has been planted. I just hope she doesn't take too long to begin to see the forest for the trees.Severus is just how I like him, smug.Great chapter!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You're right about Hermione; to steal a silly phrase from Buffy: "Denial - it's not just a river in Egypt." I'm glad you like this Severus - smug, indeed! It's also good to hear that you liked the chapter.
OK, OK, I'll write something.? I like your half-step, but for the love of Heaven, will you please have Hermione dump Ron already?? She's been with him far too long.? I like your Severus, although he must be nipping at his potions to put up with Tonks this long himself.? Um...perhaps you've notice that patience isn't one of my virtues?? Love your story and get very happy when I see an update!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Happy is good! A little patience may be in order though, so think of it as I'm trying to make you more virtuous! lol
Ready for act 2, please update soon.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Act 2 will be submitted by the end of the week.
I really like the pace at which you're developing this. It would be utterly unbelievable if Hermione, at any rate, had just given up her relationship with Ron after one (phenomenal) case of mistaken identity. She's too loyal. And Snape is probably rather into the no-strings-ness of his relationship with Tonks to jump into something with Hermione, either. Showing us how both their relationships are, and already were, headed south is going to make it all the sweeter when you get them together, I think.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You've exactly nailed what I was going for with this chapter. It's good to know that someone likes the pace of the story! I love your take on Severus - no-strings sex is so Slytherin! You're spot on about Hermione as well.
i now wanna go to that club, just to see how sev would fit in. hahaha. nice.
lovin the story!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'd love to go with you, but, alas, we would need a Time-Turner. While the Electric Ballroom is still there (and considered a landmark of Camden Town - there's even a Wikipedia entry on it), it no longer has the Full Tilt goth night.
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
darn it! oh well... we can go to whats it called... Obedience School i believe, now where is it? somewhere in the UK. lol.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I checked and Obedience School is fetish shows, which is a bit different. We'll just have to keep looking!
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
hahaha yea
Snape at Goth Night...my oh my. They'd never know what hit them.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Snort. I can just picture it - a part of me wonders if Tonks does it just to torture him (although I think it's actually because he gives her street cred with the goth crowd).
Response from Fawkes_07 (Reviewer)
*snerk* That, he would. Most definitely.
Well, perhaps SS and HG will meet up somehow at this nightclub? I guess SS affected HG more than she thought. I hope Tonks keeps her damned hands off Severus! I know-not fair, he's her boyfriend and she'll probably shag him completely. Oh well. LOL
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! This time I feel completely safe to answer your question - no nightclub meetings.
An update from you is one of the few things that could have made this vile day any better. It's interesting, how they're both trying to make it work with their current paramours. I am looking forward to reading about the proverbial straw for each of them. Thanks for an ... informative chapter!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm sorry this vile day has you down. Hugs!
More straw to be piled on soon! (Even if it takes them a while to see certain events as straw.)
Well I too kind of hope SS is not compensated too much sexually by Tonks. He doesn't even to seem to be that into her. Poor HG is not having much fun sexually. Is the SS/HG stuff coming up soon I hope? Of course the story is great but I was hoping to be past the SS/NT thing by now.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Once again, 'Ladder' is a drama, and things take more time in the real world than in romances.
An update so soon? Yep!! So, you're showing us how unsatisfactory their lives are, just to make sure they'll find it easier to get together at last?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yep - trying to keep to 2 chapters a week here at TPP, my main archive.
You are completely correct! - I'm trying to 'show' the unsatisfactory relationships instead of 'telling' about it.
Love the story--but this chapter's too short!I notice that they both seem a little disenchanted with their partners... When will you move beyond SS/NT and HG/RW?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Disenchantment is what I was going for. 'Ladder' is a drama, not a romance, so things will move at a realistic pace.
Poor Hermione... Severus seems to have affected her more than she consciously realises. I hope he gets his comeuppance by not being able to get appropriate compensation with Tonks.Hope to see rung four soon.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Well, he may be nicer than the canon depiction here, but he's still a Slytherin! Her rung four by the end of the week.
OMG..This is such a good read! I cannot wait to see how they will next meet. Update soon. :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you're enjoying it and I hope you like the next meeting, I'm going to submit the next chapter today, so more soon!
What a horrible thing to do! OMG! How does she get out of this? Poor Hermione!!!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I know, poor thing. She's got a bit of a climb ahead of her!
I like that side of Hermoine. You do a great job staying with character, I can't wait to see how you devolop Snape. What a cruel place to leave us hanging!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you find her in character. I may write evil cliffies, but I don't mean for it to be cruel - chapter 4 with Severus in a few days!
You're absolutely right, I think Hermione is the type of girl to be introspective. In fact I expect her to be the kind of girl that will take these moments and disect them, categorize them, label them, cross-reference them, chart them, graph them and over analyze them until her brain screams for mercy. She wouldn't be Hermione if she didn't. The scary part is that if her encounter with Severus on the ladder had not taken place, our favorite know-it-all would certainly have settled for safe and boring, sacrifiing herself and possibly never knowing true hapiness. This is a very bereaved and moving chapter. You can literally feel the frenzy in many of these couplings. The desperation for everyone to 'make with the happy' so not to disrespect the sacrifice of the dead is gut wrenching. Excellent job and please update very soon.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You're so right - "disect them, categorize them, label them, cross-reference them, chart them, graph them and over analyze them" - that's perfect!
You're also spot on about the importance of the ladder - it was more than PWP. Sometimes we need a wake-up call - hers just happened to have hot sex attached!
Glad you like the desperately happy part - I feel it's true to the situation.
This story is like chocolate too
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! That's very sweet. I'm glad you like it.
I don't mind exposition... as long as there's more chapters and less time between them! You're killing me over here!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'll probably hold steady at 2 chapters a week, but if it's any consolation, I've already written the next 10 chapters. (shares medi-choc)
Very nice! I love the introspective Hermione. *sends e-chocolates* lol.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad that you loved her - I can relate - I'm one of those overthinking types too. (nummy chocolate)
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
yup. same here. id be analyzing it six ways to sunday
I liked that we got a bit of backstory here, and I love "hearing" her confused thoughts. Teehee. Good work.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm quite fond of first person narration myself (as if you couldn't notice - snort). I glad you like it!
Now that I've read it, I don't understand how I missed reading this chapter when first published! But then I'm always put off by RW in conjunction with Snape's Woman.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. I wonder if that means you read chapter 2 first? I suppose it could work that way as well!
Didn't think I'd like it but I do.Elen
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! [I'm curious - what made you think you might not - bad summary, unknown author, something in chapter 1, something else?]
Response from Elen_Sila (Reviewer)
The premise is a bit wierd and usually when a story jumps immediately to sex it tends to lack a plot, yours however dosn't do this.Elen
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
(laughs) You're right - it is a rather PWP beginning, so I'm glad you stuck with while I got to the drama!
I hate it when that happens...there is something to be said about patience, but darn it I wish everything was revealed already. How did the SS/NT happen? What's next? Needless to say I can't wait for more.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm only going to be giving a certain amount of info about the characters in each chapter. If I put it all in one, it would be one long rant of exposition, and I'd hate to bore everyone. Your answers are coming!
