I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

I enjoy reading your story very much. I particularly like that your scenes offer us glimpses only. That's exactly my style. Poor Hermione. How could she have given another answer under such circumstances?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you like story and the concentrated scenes - I've made some purposeful decisions about format in an attempt to make myself 'show' instead of 'tell.' I'm glad it's working!
NOOOOOOOO....how dare you evil, eeeeevil.... she cannot and please, will not marry Ron! It will kill me if she does... PLEASE? I beg of you, don't let this nightmare to happen... or I will tell Severus... and he won't be happy
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You won't have to tell Severus - he finds out within the next few chapters! That said, I do love the little begging smilie thing.
Oh shit, poor Hermione. Good job so far! I love it!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Poor Hermione, indeed. I so glad you like the story!
I've been loving this story and impatiently waiting for updates day by day. And I won't throw any tomatoes at this chapter. I think it's actually really spot-on because at least to me, it seems as if Hermione's being courted by the Weasleys en masse as much as she's being courted by Ron in particular. I guess some might think it's feeble of her to say yes, but I dunno, I've known folks in RL who knuckled under to that sort of family pressure against their better judgement. Dare I imagine Ron will end up being relieved when it's all over?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Ooo, I love that observation - "Hermione's being courted by the Weasleys en masse as much as she's being courted by Ron in particular." That's putting it really nicely - all that subtext of desperattion I tried to lay in in chapter 2. I'm glad you like the story!
I adore this story, I look for updates every day. I love what you have done with the characters and I especially love what you have done with the latest chapter. It's fantastic. Thank you.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you look forward to the story that much - it means a lot to me! What's fantastic is that you like this chapter - I knew it would be controversial, but it just seemed to need to happen.
No tomatoes. You're right, even if she doesn't want to marry him, in that situation it isn't easy to say no. It's not as if she's actually at the alter or anything.
I'm really enjoying this.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the story and that Hermione's response seemed reasonable. You're very right about the alter!
Ch. 8 - NO! NO! NO! Oh dear me. She cannot do this! Of course it was unfair the way she was asked, but still NO!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I completely understand your reaction, but I also feel this is what she would do. That doesn't mean she stays this way (points to summary)!
Nothing, but NOTHING squicks me more than Ron and Hermione together!
Yuck! Shudder... wait, I think I'm gonna be sick...
Did someone say this was the brightest witch of her age? Not to fast on the uptake, is she? "No!" would have been good. Or "I'll think about it and get back to you." works. Or how about turning tail and apparating away without a word?
Like Argus said, "Oh dear, we are in trouble!"
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (shares medichoc - sorry you're tummy's rumbly)
I think I can safely say that book smarts don't equal people smarts (I run up against this everyday - I'm very like Hermione - LOL).
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
I am a gloomy, sarcastic grumbler myself, but to give HG a break, I usually think of the perfect answer after I've stuck my foot in my mouth.
So, OK, it's 'after' Hermione's stuck her foot in her mouth, now think of the perfect 'get me out of here' escape!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I'll try, but I don't think it'll be perfect!
Ooh, bad Ron, bad! I don't blame Hermione overly much for saying yes in those circumstances but it's going to make it tough for her in the long run. Will we ever find out what Ron thinks about their relationship, I mean if he was really happy with the way things were going or just felt pressured or somthing?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm going to keep the POVs coming from HG and SS only, so we'll never see inside RW's head. That said, you're doing some insightful reading with the groundwork I laid in chapter 3.
NOOOO! How could you do this? Evil, evil author! And stupid, clueless Ron, too... Talk about putting her on the spot. How will she get out of this? I can only hope that Severus has more sense than to let Tonks trap him in a similar manner.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I did it because Ron told me this was what he was going to do, and I believed him. (adjusts devil horns) Next chapter will tell you what's happening with NT/SS.
Ron is SUCH an idiot...he bullied her into a corner! She couldn't say no and humiliate him infront of all those people!
I wish I could kick Ron...
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad that you found her answer reasonable for the situation. You're right - Ron can be annoying!
sneaky proposal, now how does she get out of it? lolo good story so far.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the story! As for her extraction from the RW relationship? You'll have to keep reading.
Oh! What a terrible way to propose! He doesn't know her at all. I'm really enjoying this story, especially your characterization of Snape. Hope to read more soon!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that this scene reinforced their incompatability for you! More early next week.
Oh, what an ambush! I'm sure he thought he was being romantic, but really, that was almost cruel.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! One person's romatic gesture can equal another person's nightmare if they aren't on the same page about the relationship.
Yes, I think I will throw a tomato or two. Okay, I won't; it isn't like Hermione can say anything else, with Ron the clod proposing in front of everyone he's ever met. It's either say yes, or Disapparate and live life as a Muggle.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Hey, those tomatoes were fresh - I think I'll make a lovely omlette with them!
'Clod' - that's perfect for how I picture Ron - sweet but too oblivious as to what other people are thinking/feeling.
Response from Keladry Lupin (Reviewer)
Didn't anyone in that room see the look on her face? Surely she couldn't hide an expression of "OH SHIT, NO; WHERE'S DOOR NUMBER THREE," even if it was there only for a few seconds.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I think they all just took it as shock, but they're misreading the feeling behind her shock. People will see what they want to see.
(LMAO) She's going to have to find 'DOOR NUMBER THREE'!
NOOOOOOOO!! This is so wrong for so many reasons. Hermione! Get the heck out of there, before you lose your marbles and any chance for great sex!*Grumbles* You are a cruel writer, Ubiquirk.... (holds wand very tightly*) Bat-bogey hex anyone? *evil leer*Great job as usual, though i strongly object to the proposal and her half-hearted acceptance. Where's our fiery Gryffindor lioness? She can't settle for daisies when she can get a venomous Tentacula... um... yea. LOL, i do love to ham it up, sorry... Keep up the great work. Ubi! ;) Cheers!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! The 'fiery Gryffindor lioness' is still there - she's just in shock. She really had no clue! (I tied to show that by having her pick a dress that wasn't very 'smart' and thinking she'd be able to do work later on in the evening.)
She will reemerge, but I'm saving some of her fire for Severus!
Arg! bad ron!!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Bad, Ron, bad! (Maybe the future love of his life should be a dominatrix - LOL!)
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
hahaha...
*relishes the thot of ron huddled, terrified, in a corner.* hee hee
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Hmm, I think I'd let him enjoy it instead - he might make a good sub. (grins)
Response from togspled (Reviewer)
enjoy it? ron doesn't deserve to enjoy it.
idk tho. im usually the sub, not the dom, so i wouldnt know
still, after cornering hermione in like that, even if he didnt think of it that way, that boy doesn't deserve to enjoy it. lol
Really, imagine getting out of that room alive if she had said no!
Stamps foot in impatience. . . .
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (chuckles) She'd really have to have the most amazing shielding charms to do so!
How about dodging a certain ruby-set gold ring?I can see why she couldn't say no, but drawing it out will only prolong the torment. With this new development, I wonder if Snape is going to split with Tonks in the next chapter or two. Or will you yank the carpet out from under Ron?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! [Ooo, torches and a pitchfork - those are some of the most interesting smilies I've ever seen.]
If you want to throw jewelry my way, I prefer white gold!
As for your two speculations - the next chapter will answer one of your questions!
well, really. what did we expect her to say? I did'nt say "what do we want her to say!". I'm loving this story. Wonderfully done, thank you !
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked this chapter - I can just see Ron doing this and Hermione being too nice to scream, "No!"
Leave it to Ron to invite the whole family and force Hermione into saying yes. I love this story, can't wait for another update :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (laughs) I like Ron, but I guess I've written him as a bit oblivious - he thinks this is some grand, romantic gesture (and it would be, if things were good between them).
I knew there would be social pressure on her, but that was a bit much! Ron was very sure of himself - and of her - to set her up like this. I wonder how it'll help deteriorating their relationship. I can't wait for Snape's chapter: how he'll react to the news, how he'll tease her. Well, my tomatoes aren't rotten ... yet.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I must admit I got the idea from the fact that my b-i-l did this to my sister. Fortunately, she was happy about it. But what if it only pressures the woman?
Severus's reaction within the next few chapters!
She has dug a deep deep grave for herself with a lot of help from Ron- tragically nice and well-meaning Ron. I can't wait to see how she gets herself out of this one, hard to imagine there'll be no collateral damage afterwards.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I may have Ron bashed a bit in my comments, but I agree that he thinks he's doing something wonderful - "tragically nice and well-meaning Ron" is very well put.
As for the question you asked me a bit ago on my lj, I've finally posted my answer there (it had a small spoiler about this act, so I wanted to wait until chapter 8 was up).
Its official, Ron is a git and Tonks is clueless! Snape and Hermione have to get it on... soon? LOLGreat job, Cheers!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I think you're right - Ron can be a git. The sad thing is, I don't think it's intentional on his part.
More SS/HG interaction coming in a couple of chapters!
Loving this story. Keep up the great writing!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you like it and my writing!
