I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Reviews for Ladder
Gee, I never got dumped so nicely. Who knew Severus had it in him? But Tonks is at least a nice person. Hermione needs to dump Ron in a very painful fashion ... PLEASE! Love your story ... and we poor-at-suspense folks thank you for moving the action along!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yes, this is a very graceful exit on his part . (Hmm, could there also be some selfishness in that? - I discover layers as I go!)
Pain for Ron? How naughty. Glad you like the pacing (or at least the regular updating).
Awwww, Severus has a heart. And dignity. And he allows Tonks hers. Yay for them both. Thank you! And now can I have some smut? Sorry, sorry. I'll go now.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad that you liked the dignity I tried to give them both.
I can promise there will be UST soon!
Response from missblue (Reviewer)
Ooh goody! I think that lust-driven Snapeangst is nearly as hot as pr0n. And though I do love him (and esp your portrayal), I think he's presuming that HG, being "in dire need of his attentions," will fall for him if he just tunes her up right. She doesn't fall emotionally that easily, nor does she let go of people easily. IMHO.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I love UST between these two, too! You've got nice insight on both of them.
Yes, you had me there for a minute; I really thought he was going to ask for Hermione. I am unworthy. *Hangs head in shame* And he broke up with Tonks so beautifully, too :) Boy, will it be special when he finds out how Hermione's been faring.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I wrote this before those chapter 1 reviews. When when I went back and read this, I realized it might seem like I set this up as a fake out. I didn't, but it ended up working that way, too.
"Special" is one way of putting it! (grins)
Oh a few more things-sorry, lol_ I am really glad that NT never turned into HG for sex with Severus. That would have not seemed right somehow. And it's amazing how you showed that NT was never really "herself" while having sex with SS. What a great way of keeping sex impersonal. And SS is a Slytherin to the end, although he's saying the right things to Tonks and means them I'm sure, his main goal in ending the relationship is probably his own pursuits.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked this version w/o the Tonks as Hermoine sex. You're right - there's still some Slytherin selfishness buried under the 'nice' in this Severus.
Yes, I was expecting him to ask for Hermione, but your way is so much better.
So Severus is cut loose, while Hermione is tied tighter. Can't wait to see how this goes :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm so glad you like the way it went.
So Severus is cut loose, while Hermione is tied tighter.
Glad you liked the irony of these last 2 chapters!
I am glad that SS/NT are no more but I have to commend you on the way you ended it. Very realistic, and all things considered not a "heartbreaking" breakup for either party. I wonder if SS even realized that he's breaking up with NT cause he wants more now (hopefully HG). And it's very clear the way you showed that more than the sex it was friendship for each of them. And safe sex in that their hearts were safe. If only HG gets away from RW this easily-I doubt it. LOL Of course the HG/RW relationship does involve more feelings etc. than the SS/NT one, so of course it will be a more bittter break. Great job.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I wrote this weeks ago, so I was constantly grinning every time you asked me to break up NT/SS soon - I knew it was coming! Glad you enjoyed it and that it worked for the level of emotional involvement I've shown in the story.
Heh. I love that he doesn't let her say what she wants to say at the end and that she lets him get away with it. That's spot on. I also love that she isn't clumsy anymore -- I can really see that.
As always, eagerly awaiting the next installment!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You bring up two points I was hoping would stand out, so I'm really glad they did for you. Her lack of clumsiness just came to me as another physical symbol of her loss. Severus ducks psychoanalysis - lol!
I definately thought he was going to be tacky and ask her to be hermione, I am really glad he didn't. Your idea was less predictable and much sweeter, looking forward to the next chapter as always.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked this chapter and found it somewhat novel. More soon!
I think I actually prefer this version to a PWP with a false Hermione...Aw, Severus showing his sensitive side. I hope, for Hermione's sake, that he's capable of that when he's not breaking up with someone.I get the feeling that the Hermione/Ron split won't be nearly as amicable, but perhaps I'll be surprised.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I must admit that PWP idea had never occured to me until I read it in reviews!
I'm glad you liked this version - it feels true to me. Severus is a bit sensitive here, but don't forget he's a Slytherin as well.
What an interesting last point! (grins)
And the special level of hell could be reserved for authors who leave our girl with dodgy proposals too!Only kidding! Marvelous writing my friend...as always! Keep 'em coming!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (adjusts devil horns) You mean these things might be permanent? LOL
Glad you enjoyed even with the dodginess!
This is why I think marriage proposals should be done in private!! There's less possibility for public humiliation that way. Wow, what a chapter!! I thank the deities above that I have never had to deal with a situation as unique as hers. On one hand I want to sigh and say 'Poor Hermione' while the other half of my brain wants to say 'You've no one to blame but yourself, girl.' I can honestly say that in all my time in the HP fandom, I've never truly felt sorry for Ron until right now.I think one of my favorite aspects of this rung is just how deliciously devious her devil's advocate is. It's almost as if that voice is channeling Loki himself. Severus' parallel rung cannot come soon enough. I'm dying to know how he's been fairing as well.
As always, this was excellent!!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I just realized that I do seem to have them only hearing devilish inner voices - there's never a corresponding angel sitting on the other shoulder. I must be evil! (grins and adjusts horns)
I'm glad that you can feel for Ron - most people are angry, which is a valid reaction, but I also think it's sad that he's so far off about the relationship.
Glad you liked it!
Oh Shite! How is she going to find her way out of this one? Looking forward to the next chapter. Keep up the good work!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yep, she's in a pickle! I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Next chapter in a day or so!
You know I can understand HG's reaction. She was caught by surprise, and she was in front of family and friends. She's also nice-she'd never want to hurt Ron especially in front of others. In defense of Ron, I really think he thought he was doing a good thing. I'm sure he thinks HG is perfectly happy and wants to marry him. I don't think in his mind, he was putting her on the spot, but rather making her happy and he wanted them to celebrate with freinds. Of course I'd hate to see her marry Ron, but this was a very interesting chapter. Great writing as always.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad Hermione's 'yes' was believable for you - she does care for Ron. You're also completely right about his motivations - he thinks he's being romantic. It's sad for both, really.
Thanks for the comment on my writing - I'm not completely happy with the begining of the chapter, even though I've worked it over about 30 times.
No. She wouldn't. Even if she wasn't as unsatisfied as she has been, she would scorn him for putting her in such a situation in front of everybody. You can only attempt to rectify this SOON. Or face the consequences ;-)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Well, I felt she'd be too shocked and pressured to say no. And remember, she does care for Ron. There will be something done about it all, but not necessarily soon. (Consequences?)
Response from lipa (Reviewer)
I thought the smiley would take care of the perceived threat. I just wanted to express the enormity of my distress. Hermione saying yes to a life-time sentence that she knows she does not want -- heavy stress. The only consequence at my disposal is not reading, and I am quite incapable of that at this point in the story. I will follow it to the (bitter) end no matter what.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
I was trying to be funny with the consequences thing, but, alas, some things don't come through without vocal inflections!
Evil, evil Ron! It is, of course, comforting to know that Hermione will get her Snape in the end, but still. Lovely story. Bring on chapter 9!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you're looking at the long-term picture, even if it takes her a while to get there! Thanks for saying you like the story.
My instinct alone would have had me slapping him and then apparating away as fast as he could. Ron is far more manipulative than Hermione obviously took him for. Poor girl, talk about being put on the spot.
Great chapter, evil cliffie.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the chapter. I have to agree - it's good that no boyfriend ever did this to me - it mightn't have been pretty!
The sad thing - he can't see it as manipulative.
What a low, foul thing for him to do! Shame on you, Ron Weasley!
Nice move for you, though, author - you made it impossible for her to say no!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I suppose I've used dramatic irony in this chapter since he thinks it's romantic.
I'm glad that how socially constrained she is to say yes came through for you!
God that was evil. Now what the hell is she going to do? More soon please.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! (readjusts devil horns) She's going to have to climb, climb, climb (I'm working that ladder metaphor again)! Next chapter soon.
Your joking!
NO WAY
that was a horrible thing to throw on me! and even worse since she knows that they have nothing in common and that it wont last!
my goodness... Im in shock..
-karlamarie
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! You seem as shocked as Hermione. (shares medichoc)
I'm afraid it's no joke - I really think, under these circumstances, that Ron might do this.
WHAT??? The next chapter better be in the queue as we speak...you evil cliffmaster you! But seriously, this was a very engaging chapter. I can hardly wait for the next one. And Ron is such a jerk for proposing like that in front of all their friends and family. It shoes how overly confident and arrogant he is when in regards to Hermione and her thoughts and feeling. He is truly delusional.Good job! :)
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you found the chapter engaging and that Ron's obliviousness to Hermoine's thoughts and feelings came through for you. Next chapter soon!
What can I say? I love it!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it.
:cough: OKAY THEN, MISSY.
Y'all can torture us if you want - it's YOUR FIC - but I hope to God that a) Snape is furious and it sparks something in him; b) UST is coming SOON!
Oh, and thanks for another fine chapter. :bounces impatiently:
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the chapter, even with the proposal.
Just you wait and see - your hopes sound pretty good! (You know you can't keep me away from the UST for long!)
what, what?! that didn't just happen. anyways, i heart Wash. i don't heart having to wait for the next chapter.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Always nice to hear from a fellow Firefly fan.
Urp - it happened. The next chapter should be up early next week!
Poor Hermione - in a crowded situation like that, with everyone looking on, saying 'yes' was the only sane thing to do! Looking forward to more...
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! Yes, she really had little choice. More soon!
OUCH! Way to leave her no exit, Ronnie. Perhaps you'd already figured out, at least subconsciously, that she was gravitating toward the door. Yikes.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
Thanks! That's interesting - it would have to be subconscious because I think I'm writing Ron as a bit unobservant. Yikes all around!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Reviewer)
You know, I was just thinking this morning--Ron may be emotionally clueless, but he IS a tactician...and in this case, he totally surrounded the queen and put her in check in every direction before making his move.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Ladder)
This must be one of those things where writers put stuff in subconsciously, and it has an extra amount of resonance for the story once someone points it out. (It took me a bit to see that the ladder was the overall metaphor for the story as well - LOL).
