Reviews for Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P)
Thanks goodness for Vector! She's like - well, the brighter side of The Greater Good. The opposite to Dumbledore's manipulations. Of course, running calculations and strategizing require different abilities from those needed to lead men in a war, but I bet she's smart enough to do that as well, if she so chose. (I've come back here from the end of next chapter to leave this comment: I was so engrossed in this rollercoaster of emotions that I went straight to the end of it before realising :D)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
It was the worst cliffhanger of the story, so it's not completely unexpected :)Vector is very different from Dumbledore. Like Snape, she's having to make, and willing to make, certain kinds of sacrifices for the war. But she does it in her own way. No-one should underestimate her! Thanks for the review.
Poor, poor Severus! That fatal dialogue always makes me want to cry and huggle him. And he's so merciless towards himself! *sniffles*After all he's been in over the past few days, I was dreading that he might turn out all kind!Professor with Hermione. I shouldn't have worried, as you Exceed Expectations once more *G*
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Nope, not kind! Nasty even by Professor S' pretty low standards, I'm afraid. :)I'll have more to say about that conversation with Dumbledore much, much later. . . Thanks for the review.
I totally liked Hermione's family and her light-yet-adult relationship with your delightful Viktor, though I find her surprisingly insightful of "matters of heart" for her young age. All the better for her!BTW, Viktor playing football as a young Beckham is fun :))And - applauses for your clever handling of canon! Everything makes sense and the story runs smoothly along with the events of 6th year. I'm particularly glad that you have dealt with the "Marietta issue," but there is one point I've never understood: even if Marietta had had to choose between her family and the DA, as I have always thought, why couldn't she feel sorry all the same? (I'm sure I'm being dense here...)And your Dumbledore is spot on, as usual!Let's see what next lesson will bring ;)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Hmm, re Marietta, I've always thought that she probably would have felt sorry, except that she had "SNEAK" spelled across her face in horrible pimples. I think that would have turned her guilt into anger pretty quickly.HG is pretty much using VK as a balm for the hurt she'd received from Ron; which really isn't so admirable. But at least this way both HG and VK know that and don't mind. :)Oh, that next lesson . . . I know you've already read it so onwards . . . Thanks for the review :)
*nods vehemently* that's how it should be, in my expectations. An abundant stream of consciousness from Snape, and his character laid bare for us to see - and feel for him and resent on his account and suffer with him.He also took a vindictive pleasure in secretly being a better man than the so-called nice, friendly people around him.Love this one.Meeting at the coffee shop: first of all, *swoons* I take espresso like S. does! I'm positive that sugar kills the coffee taste. Then, S' epiphany - heartbreaking.I also like Hermione's behaviour and attitude, at least what we are allowed to see from his POV. Krum is another very good addition. I'm not a Ron-basher, either, but I wonder how H. could have felt attracted by Ron when she had such an alternative. Of course, distance does that. Anyway his special Portkey is a brilliant invention; I suppose we'll see more of it ;)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
:) I also take my espresso black with no sugar!! :) It's best that way.Poor Snape, he feels everything so deeply. I had to bring Viktor back--I'm not a Ron basher either, but he and JKR certainly managed to give Hermione a rather bleak 6th year. I thought she deserved a special Christmas present ;)Thank you for yet another delicious review.
Dunno but IMVHO those gym lessons are exuding tons of UST. Very subtle, therefore more powerful. Just the way I like it :)H's reflections about her newfound awareness of her Professor are perfectly IC. And I have no intention to deal with the scene under the mistletoe - need to see what happens "after" *scurries off to ch.16* (another advantage of patience: I'm so behind that instead of fretting over a cliffhanger I can just *click* et voilà, the magic is done! :)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
UST? *looks innocent* I don't know what you're talking about. :)It's a long, slow journey that those two were on, though HG's behaviour under the mistletoe might not have suggested as much ;) At least by taking the time to write the review you managed to prolong the delicious cliffhanger sensation for yourself! Thanks, again!!
Interesting S/H interaction. I'm sure he was only aiming at shaking her out of her gloom, but what a backlash! He's already to the point of talking himself out of inappropriate thoughts, LOL! "Library romance" *G* So much that he doesn't react to her angry warning, which would be equally inappropriate, if "he" had not already crossed all limits."he considered the woman in front of him." Very telling.And... have you really planned for Krum to come to UK and stay at Hermione's?!? *rubs hands in anticipation*AndHeeeeeee - poker evenings at Hogwarts! You have definitely a gift for bringing to life OCs and minor characters :)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
YES! They are both out of line in that scene; both begining to blur the line between appropriate student/teacher behaviour. Nothing in canon says that Krum didn't come and visit ;) in fact, JKR only tells us she went home to her parents because Ron had recinded on an invite to the Burrow because they weren't talking. :)I really think it unlikely that SS would have made no friends at all in the 10 years he taught at Hogwarts while waiting for Harry to grow up, and by book 6 Snape had been there more than 15 years. Imagining him with friends makes it even more difficult to contemplate how book 7 must have been for him. Thanks for yet another insightful review.
You are SO good at taking me back to forgotten sensations! Hermione's developing feelings for Ron. Glances exchanged over a shared thought. The sudden awareness of another's forearm: synecdochic, alien, exciting... but it happens with her professor as well, on a shifted, and still mostly unconscious, level. She is bound to make comparisons (well, you certainly do it, or this is how I understand it *g*)Ha! here it is: Jocelyn/Hermione, I knew I just had to be patient :)) Truth be said, I find the first-year a little bit too comfortable while dealing with Hermione. Probably it's just me, but I'd have been (I mean, I was!) intimidated, not to mention incredibly pleased and happy, when someone over 15 seemed willing to talk to me as if I was their peer :DYou know, Hermione's attitude in the Felix Felicis accident, in your words, looks like something I might have done any moment *swallows* - BTW, nice addition of sympathetic Professor Snape at the end ;)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I think you're right about Jocelyn being too comfortable--especially given her history, I can imagine her having much stronger reserves than I've shown here. Oh, well. I definitely think it's going to take Hermione longer to notice the comparisons than you did, however, eventually she shall :) I really tried to think back to my own teenage crushes, first brushes with desire, and to articulate how it felt. So, it's good to hear that I wasn't completely off the mark.I do like Ron--I know a lot of HGSSers don't so much--but I do think he's a complete arse about Lavender. Thanks for the review!
Though I'd have liked to see more of Hermione's interaction with Jocelyn, I confide in your choices and, after all, I've had a great time with Snape's musings. Analysing people's relations through paper grading is very creative :)And then he plays saviour. Again. For how long, poor man? You are doing a great job of arousing our sympathies for his solitary, understated heroics, knowing that the worse is yet to come... And that Dumbledore! Enough to make me want to whine "Please mummy can I strangle him? Pretty please? - so, I have no charitable feelings if, for once, he is the one confronted with haunting memories and past mistakes.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Aye, yes. Dumbledore. What can I say? He gives SS such a hard time. When I finally heard about his past in DH, I was astounded that he could have been so cruel to SS--he seemed to think, for example, that SS had never fully paid his debt--and yet AD maintained his reputation as a hero, was loved by so many. Poor SS. :(Always saving people, never being properly thanked.I'm glad you liked the chapter. :) Thanks for the review.
How does one tuck a sprig of basil flower into their buttonhole? I spent few minutes pondering the issue, LOL. Whenever I need them around (as mosquito repellant. not because I share Luna's taste for extravagant decoration) I end by carrying them like a loony wannabe bride ;)Vector's beckground is the most unexpected run into RL and recent history that I've had the pleasure to come across in the HP fandom. I have this nagging feeling that I should know these events, though I can't place them exactly (Panagulis is the first name that crossed my mind, but of course the timeframe is entirely wrong)love and politics is a fierce combination. *sighs* so many memories of the 70s!Some more very delicate, very spot on moments of teen-age Hermione growing up. Her nostalgy for simpler times, her blessed moment of respite playing with Harry and Ron. Her first pangs of jealousy. As for the lesson - well, that's the beginning (or at least I hope so) of the interaction we are all expecting to develop. And I like the pace you are keeping in its development.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I confess that I have a dear friend--a retired math teacher, on whom I have loosely based my version of Professor Vector. My friend is great fun, has outrageous opinions and likes to express them, and in summer, is rarely to be seen without a basil flower stem drooping from her button hole!! :)She also left Greece because of her involvement with the Communist party (though she refuses to give anyone, even her daughters any more details).Thank you very much for all of your comments--I'm trying really hard to keep Hermione age-appropriate.
Pheeww, I'm sorry for putting your story on hold, but I like it too much not to give it my full attention, and things had become a little too messed up for me recently. I even read this chapter twice already, without the chance to complete my comment. Now that the Exchange is over, I hope I will be a better reader :)As for this chapter, I loved both the occlumency lessons and (perhaps even more) the side story of little Jocelyn, the concern Severus is showing, their interaction with Poppy Pomfrey -- and what his uncharacteristical behaviour tells of Snape :)Now this will be the occasion to redefine inter-house relations, among many other tantalising opportunities for developments...
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
You have my full permission to read the story as quickly or as slowly as you so desire; I am just delighted that you want to read it at all :)Original characters can be such a tricky area in fan fiction, but I felt that Jocelyn was necessary for so many dramatical and narratological reasons. We know from canon that SS's relationships with his young charges must be very different from that of his relationship with the Gryffindors, because the Slytherins don't seem frightened of him at all. Among other things, Jocelyn gives me a good opportunity to work through that without any of the negative Slytherin baggage HP's POV has given the canon characters. Thanks for the review!!
Response from ihke (Reviewer)
I'll confess that I've always been a greedy reader, unable to put down a book until I've reached the end... often taking great pleasure in re-reading from the beginning and discovering things I've missed the first time. With fanfic WIPs, especially when they are good as your is, there's an unspoken engagement between authors and readers, whose comments (once they have started commenting) must at least show their effort to let the author know their reactions.I've found out -at my tender age!- how reviewing, even at this amateurial level, requires different skills, and a different attention span, from those used for simple 'reading.' As I usually read overnight, postponing comments for hours makes the task more difficult (I often end by re-reading parts or the whole chapter, LOL) - something that just cannot be done over a normal working day. That's how I am discovering the value of patience :P
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Well, they do say that patience is a virtue . . . although I'm not entirely convinced of that myself. I do agree with you about WIP reviews--and it's something I didn't really get a proper understanding of until I started writing myself. Because getting that feedback is soooo nice. :) So, thanks!!
Nice twist. Very ingenious how you manage to stick to canon (so far!) while telling Hermione's story and putting in a lot of extra, interesting information. As a classicist/medievalist who specialized in philosophy and logic, let me add that Ockham actually formulated this maxim as 'Entia non multiplicanda sunt sine necessitate' (We should not multiply entities without necessity), which of course comes down to the same thing. Contrary to popular belief, the principle was not invented by Ockham; it's at least as old as Aristotle. Ockham used it in a metaphysical/ontological context, meaning that he did not believe in Plato's immaterial, eternal and incorruptible Ideas as the perfect originals of the imperfect and material things we observe around us. Ockham considered this an unjustified multiplication of objects which, as he believed, were not necessary to explain the structure of our world. These days people generally use the maxim in a scientific context to advocate the simplicity of theories.OK, end of class.Looking forward to your next update!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Dear Professor, I found your lecture on logic and philosophy highly enjoyable; I only wish I'd known all that before I posted my chapter. :) I was navigating entirely by what I learned about logic in high school. I felt pretty certain he wasn't originally responsible for it, despite the name . . . hardly anything in the popularly received history of ideas is correctly attributed.Anyway, thanks for the review--and for the info, both are much appreciated.
Response from HannahSmith (Reviewer)
Glad you enjoyed it! But I didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all (though I fear I am one...); just offered a bit of elaboration, for what you said was all correct, anyway. As for the attribution of ideas, it's usually the person who makes the most interesting or popular use of it who gets credited with it. It seems that Ockham was, besides a logical genius, a witty, sarcastic and rather pedantic person who completely crushed his debating opponents at the university and elsewhere, which did not earn him many friends, and went around slashing his razor much to the grief of more theologically minded collegues; eventually he had to flee to another country. It doesn't pay to make a lot of enemies, any more than to assume a lot of entities..!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I don't think there is any fan of Hermione who truly thinks that knowing and sharing information is a bad thing! You make Ockham sound a lot like Snape . . . (also not a bad thing in my book!)
Response from HannahSmith (Reviewer)
Yes, he does - but Ockham died as an exile of the plague in Munich, aged 59. I sincerely hope that your Snape will live a bit longer (and preferably not as a celibatarian monk...).
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Well, you'll have to wait and see what happens to my Snape ;)
Response from HannahSmith (Reviewer)
Exactly! So update soon !
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
It's in the queue--can't do any better than that! :)
It's so cool that Prof Vector asked Hermione to help out. I really loved the way she manipulated Hermione into being her 'assistant' without actually making it seem like she'd palnned it. I bet the numbers told her too. I always liked that Hermione gave Ron a nudge to get back on the team. So when is Sev going to make his move, hum?
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I <3 Vector, I really do. I know it's probably solipsistic of me to do so, but I find her such a useful character and so fun to write. For one thing, I think she's a believable justification for so much of Dumbledore's seeming omnipotence. And, Sev will make his move in . . . chapter nine? (from memory). Thanks for the review. :)
as always, i love how you weave this with canon - i can't imagine doing it myself but you are and it's great. additionally, the story itself is very well written - i love your writing style in general but the depth you are adding to the characters and their relationships is exciting and very plausible. this is a great chapter. i've never rated a story before but i decided to give my first rating to you (*****) i also added it as a fav. i'm really enjoying reading and as always, i'm anxiously awaiting the next chapter!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Your first ever rating?? Really? I'm so chuffed. :) {does a little happy dance in the living room}I'm glad you're enjoying the story so much! Next chapter should join the queue this evening. . .
This is undoubtedly the best of the SS/HG stories I have ever read. I am awed by the subtle weaving in of various characters so seamlessly that there are no threads left dangling. Your portrayal of Viktor is flawless. The whole story flows like silk sliding over bare skin. I am very impressed. Thank you. I did not leave chapter reviews because I was too enthralled to stop reading.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Wow. I am more flattered than a simple review response could express: thank you, this is high praise indeed. I'm delighted to hear how much you enjoyed the story. I hope to add the next chapter to the queue this evening . . . so you can have that to look forward to!Thanks again for the review.
wow! what a terrific update! loved the stuff about Occam's razor but i see why i didn't take latin or logic in school. thanks so much
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it--and I'm hoping it still made sense even if you didn't take Latin or logic ;)Thanks for the review.
Oh wow what a chapter. I was so impresed at how you wove Hermione's perspective in this and her way of handeling the 'logic' puzzle. What did she say to him in Latin - no fair doing that and not telling us! LOL kidding.Severus' reactions were surprising in that he almost dropped his masks. Very good job. Oh, I've recommended this fic to two of my online friends!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! I'm thrilled by the recommendation. The Latin is in the author's note, transcribed here for your convenience :A / N : Occam’s razor is a logical theorem that posits the simplest explanation that accounts for all phenomena as the most probable outcome. The statement of the theorem in Latin, Pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate, translates literally as “plurality should not be posited without necessity.”Hope that clears things up! ;) Thanks again for review/recommendation.
lovely job - thanks again!!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you again! :)
I'm glad she figured it out herself. If anyone could, she definitly would be the one. I'm sure it will be of some comfort to Severus once the despicable deed is done. Shame on Dumbly for ever asking him to do it.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad you're glad. I thought I'd given her enough crumbs of information that she could put it together with what she already knew to come to the right conclusions.Shame on Dumbledore indeed. I'm with you on that point. Thanks for the review. :)
smartest witch of her age, indeed. she should have hugged him; that could have been interesting.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Wouldn't it have been? ;) It's a nice scenario to imagine . . . Thanks for the review!
Excellent chapter. I loved how Hermione got Severus's attention to get him to talk with her.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! First: insult one of his Slytherins, then: quote Latin logical maxims at him. I'm glad you liked it. :)
Good girl! :)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
That's our Hermione! Thanks for the review.
*sigh* I wanted to hug Snape too. Poor Snape. *sniffle*
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Correct response! :) He needs hugs, the poor man. Thanks for the review. :)
Oh, Severus' reactions toward Slughorn was stunning. He open hates the man! I liked the way he met with this house and the meeting with his students in his office. Really put them (all but Draco) in their place, didn't he?I can't believe I missed this chapter!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I can't imagine that Severus was an automatic member of the Slugclub, and I can see several ways that his relationship with his head of house might have played out in unfortunate ways.I wanted to give some insight into the evident rapport between Snape and the young Slytherins in his care--that went deeper than unfairly giving them housepoints, but that didn't negate that either.I'm glad you rediscovered it, then! Thanks for the bunch of reviews.
Has Hermione just out smarted Dumbledore? I think she has. The know-it-all does it again. But now Snape feels terrible, will he turn to Hermione for comfort maybe it's time for them to stop hiding their feelings.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Hmm, we'll have to see whether she has or not, but I think she's certainly made a pretty good effort ;) I tried to make sure she had just enough information from Harry + Arithmancy + her time with Snape that she could work it out, but nowhere near enough that Dumbledore would expect it. Logic is Hermione's strong point after all! :)Thanks for the review.
Behind on reading as I am, I just began this tale yesterday -- printed it out and then couldn't put it down! This is so well done on so many levels. It's not easy to write a well-woven Canon-era fic, but you have done such a lovely job weaving canon with your story and adding layers of characterization. Hermione feels like an older adolescent and not an adult; Snape's need and fear and hope and rage are palpable. The relationship growing between them feels credible and viable -- a student/teacher relationship with an edge and with the attendant conflict you would expect from two such principled people. Snape preparing Hermione to do the feats we see her doing in DH feels far more realistic than her sudden and inexplicable skills in canon. I'm eager for more and so admiring of what you're wrought thus far! Brava!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Wow! Thanks for such all-encompassing praise. Firstly, I'm thrilled to hear that you read the story through so quickly, but also, you have touched on so many issues that I thought about and tried to make apparent when writing the story. I imagined the story as a way to fill a lot of weird ellipses in canon, and most importantly, I wanted the characters to feel age-appropriate. Your review means a lot to me, thank you for writing it.
