Reviews for Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P)
Oh dear, jealousy does not suit Severus well at all.Lovely chapter I can't wait to see Hermione retaliate.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! :) Jealously isn't flattering on anyone, but Severus wears it particularly badly.
When Severus get jealous and upset he seems to take it out on those he cares about. I think his attitude has left something thinking open for himself and hermione. If I was she, I'd certainly want to know where his line of questioning had come from, as to her it would be out of the blue. After her anger dies down, I'm sure she will think about that. Definitely interested to see what will happen. If he pushes her away like he did with lily or they somehow end up together despite the odds

Severus has a bad habit of lashing out (those who fail to learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them?).I see some pretty strong similarities between Lily and Hermione, but also some pretty major differences . . . I guess we'll (read: you'll) have to wait and see how that pans out ;)Thanks for the review! :)
I very much like ho wyou wove the bits from DH into the story, and the meeting with Voldemort was chilling! Seeing all of this from Severus' POV makes things so clear and yet, knowing the outcome, so sad. Very informative chapter.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! Voldy is one scary individual. I kind of wonder what he was like during VWI, because his views seem so manic and contradictory during VWII that you have to wonder how he ever managed to convert people to his cause.
What jealousy can lead to... I do hope they make though (of course). Also I think Severus's interest in Hermione's sex life is going to get her thinking. Look forward to the next chappie.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Poor Severus & Hermione! I'm hoping they make it through, too ;)Thanks for the review! :)
I wonder what it says about me that I always want Hermione to slap people whenever anyone offends her in that manner. Great chapter. I specifically noted the great descriptive points, like here:"There are a number of lessons that you”—he gave individual emphasis to each of the next few words, sweeping a disparaging gaze up and down her body as he did so—“need to learn, I will decide when and where."It really helps me hear his voice in my head and makes the story come alive.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I absolutely agree about wanting Hermione to slap people. I had kind of anticipated having her do so; I certainly wasn't expecting her to be so restrained in her anger when I sat down to write the scene.I guess she wasn't ready yet to slap a teacher? She was certainly taken by surprise--particularly since her experience of him lately was that he hadn't shouted on several occasions when she expected him to. Poor Hermione, he really was awful to her, even by his rather low standards of polite behaviour. Thanks for such an encouraging review, I'm delighted to hear that my writing style appeals to you. :)
Cantankerous old bastard. Very cool!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Why, thank you! *grins delightedly*
That was beneath him, but then again, so was calling Lily a Mudblood. That kind of careless cruelty is really a key to Severus, isn't it?
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
He's a bit like a wounded animal, methinks, lashing out ferociously when he's injured. Poor Severus. Thanks for the review. :)
Ouch. That was harsh, but I must acknowledge - vintage Snape. On par with his Mudblood moment with Lily. Apologies, anyone?*waits patiently for the next chapter*
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Even by Snape's rather nasty standards, it was pretty harsh. Those who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them? ;)I'm glad you can be so patient! Thanks for the review :)
Poor Sev -- it's gonna be a long lonely year if he doesn't trust Hermione.....
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
That it is. Poor Severus, poor Hermione. Thanks for the review! :)
Well, I knew this would be good, and I had planned to read this later, after the end of the Exchange, but the other night I just couldn't resist. I read the first chapters and I'm hooked.I love your refined prose. Characterisations and dialogues are brilliant, and the imaginative take on Hermione's wound and her seeing SS as a Phoenix are foreshadowing thrilling developments. An extra thank you for giving a powerful voice to SS' POV, so hauntingly missing from canon - for understandable plot reasons allright, but I cannot help being critical for the waste of the best character in the whole HP saga (thank goodness for fanfic and JKR, clever author, allowing it!)Thank you for sharing!Lela

Thank you for such a lovely review! I'm delighted to hear that you're enjoying the story so much!I, too, can sympathise with JKR's reasons for leaving Snape's perspective out, but I'm glad that we're all here to make up for that oversight.I hope you enjoy the rest of the story, too. Thanks again for the review.
Great chapter, as to Hermione's question on why didn't Albus take the curse off of Edgecombe, I suspect there was a lesson he wanted Hermione to learn.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the chapter. You're right about Dumbledore, he's always tends to leave people to work things out for themselves--even if it means that Marietta had to suffer for a while! Thanks again for the review! :)
I am enjoying this story so much! I really appreciate how close you are remaining to canon while still giving us a whole other narrative to read as well. (I have to say that I laughed out loud at the poker game). Great work -- I'll be looking forward anxiously to more.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My hope was to write a story that doesn't directly contradict canon, but that ends the way I wanted it to! ;) All things in life being tractable, I should update about once a week . . . thanks again for the review :)
HO! That sesson with Hermione was really quite informative. Severus and Krum, I really hope that the meetig betweenthem goes well. I liked Hermione's telling him about the library and the work Krum is doing. Severus' reaction was down right eye raising! Teehehehe When will that man wake up?The poker game - was briliant! Loved the banter and the innuendos between the staff. Really cool.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Wasn't it just? Such an insatiable curiosity that man has about that young woman. I wonder why? ;)I'm so glad you liked that chapter, thanks for reviewing.
It's good that Hermione is getting to know Jocelyn. Ron is such a wanker - but then he did go for Lavender, didn't he. Loved the use of the birds, and Hermine's reaction to Severus.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I think it a crying shame that JKR never let Ron grow up, he had a lot of potential when he was young. Did you notice that when Jocelyn blew her nose on one of SS's hankies, he cleaned it before he took it back, but when Hermione used one he let her keep it? He's falling so fast. :)Thanks for the review!!
It would be great if Severus can convince Viktor to join the Order. His jealousy that wasn't jealousy was pretty cute.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad you think so. :) The meeting itself (Viktor, Hermione + Severus) should prove quite interesting! Thanks for the review :)
Wonderful chapter! I was glad to see so much Severus/Hermione interaction. When she admitted that she slept with Viktor, Severus seemed a little unsure what to make of that. I think it's too early for him to come to any concrete decisions if he has any feelings of attraction to her, but I have a feeling he might start feeling a little bit jealous when Viktor arrives and stays at her parent's house. I can only imagine how he is going to deal with said jealousy should it arise. Looking very forward to more!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Poor Severus! Once he admits to himself that he's feeling jealous, I think he's going to be a little miserable!I'm glad you enjoyed the S/H interaction, more is promised for the next chapter . . . ;)
You've woven canon and your own fiction together beautifully. I likeyour portrait of Severus; he's a powerful wizard and not to be trifledwith, but far more complex than Rowling ever managed to reveal. I'mlooking forward to reading more of this story.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much. Part of the reason that I find Severus such an intriguing character is precisely because JKR was obliged to paint such a one-sided Harry-tinged portrait of him in order to maintain the tension over which side his true loyalties lay. It makes him so much fun to play with in my spare time :) Thanks again for the review.
Loved the poker party! It was rather reminiscent of the poker games that started to pop up during episodes of ST:TNG, with Data in his green-tinted visor... ah, good times. I also enjoyed Severus' interrogation of Hermione's relationship with Krum, which he absolutely did not care about, no sir! Ha! Hooch's line about him forcing students to actually converse with him as part of their detentions was great. The rather ancient Greek take on "strong body, strong mind (magic)" is a good one, and begs the question if that might not be part of the reason Neville needs help sometimes... perhaps he should take up running with Hermione. After all, with the threat of Voldemort returning, cultivating running as a skill probably would not be a bad idea, I'm thinking, an increase in magical power notwithstanding!Waiting breathlessly for the next chapter...
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you for such a thoughtful and encouraging review. I'm thrilled that you're enjoying the story.I really like your thoughts on Neville. It's interesting to reflect that in DH, when the trio turns up at Hogwarts, Neville is described as having muscled up, or thinned down, or something . . . am I misremembering? I wonder whether it was the magicking that got him fit, or the getting fit that got him magically stronger?I promise to add the next chapter to the queue by the end of the week!
terrific update. thanks so much
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you for the review :) Reviews make me super happy!!!
I can see Severus being one jealous person when Krum arrives. But who minds stirring things up a little? Look forward to more.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I certainly don't object to stirring things up ;) I fear he will be quite jealous indeed. Poor Severus! Thanks for the review. :)
Nice chapter, but I think Severus is kidding himself. His questioning of Hermione and the emotions dug up from said questioning show he has feelings for her.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Yeah, I think Severus is kidding himself, too. Once he admits to himself that he's attracted to her, I can't imagine he's going to be very happy about it! :)Thanks for the review!!
Nice chapter. I'm looking forward to seeing how Hermione's relationship to Krum can change the outcome...gab
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! Krum's reappearance is going to stir a few things up for SS, methinks. ;)Thanks again for the review. g.
nice work-up chapter - great development of secondary characters - adds so much to your work - thanks so much for sharing - loving this story!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! I'm as delighted as ever to hear that you're enjoying it. There are several pieces of information sprinkled through this chapter that will prove pertinent later on--some sooner than others ;) Thanks again for the review.
Poker parties. Who would have thought? :D
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
You mean, apart from me, right? ;) I'm glad the idea appeals.
I'm surprised Hermione was willing to admit her relationship with Krum to Severus. Does her experience make her more desirable to Snape?
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
The thing is, that Snape is such a strong Legilimens, that had she tried to deny it, he would have known her to be lying. Hermione decided to tell the truth and try and gain some momentum back in the conversation so as to be able to call some of the shots.Severus hasn't yet admitted to himself that he does find her desirable, but I do think that this conversation was an important step in his shift from thinking of her as a student towards thinking of her as an adult. Thanks for the review! g.
