Variety Challenge first runner up. Hermione Granger is given a Time-Turner and instructions to use it. Only, using a Time-Turner can be a little tricky if not used correctly: a mistake made in counting or a slip of fingers can make the user jump irregularly and thus she could accidentally alter her time line. And when such an accident happens, Severus Snape uses Hermione’s Time-Turner in order to fix a horrific wrong. However, it’s his younger self that becomes the one who must ensure that history is not altered.

I love to write. A dreamer, a creator and filled with wonder, imagination and life. Sometimes I get lost in the other worlds I've read and in some I create. It's all good, I’m in good company.
“Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and the strength, use it to create.”― Maria Montessori
“Our imagination flies -- we are its shadow on the earth.”― Vladimir Nabokov
“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions.”― Albert Einstein

She didn't get the hint. Oh, well. Poor things. At least there are more of them going this time.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
No, it was more she was thinking about backing Harry so he didn't fall into a trap and get killed. Yep, 23 are off with the Boy-Who-Lived-To-Do-It-Again. Thankyou for reading and for the review.
The end of this chapter is an excellent addition to the book, even without any reference to the timeturner-accidents you added. Snape acknowledging Hermione during Potions, that was very nice--and yet subtle! You deviated from canon by having near-everyone in DA know that Harry experienced he 'was' the snake. It makes sense, and you gather a larger group this way. I love how unorganised they are once actions are needed--as they should be!! Admittedly, I'm somewhat lost with the hints Snape gives.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. Well, Snape's little comments, his encouragement and then his compliment all stem from her days shared with him as a teen, and of course he was subtle! Yep, Hermoine and Ron turned to their friends. By not keeping everything to the vest, telling them what's going on, they now have support of the DA. Well, organized is one way to put it, but yep, in the end, they were all off to save... well, they are off. How are you lost with the hints Snape gave her?
As always, that was a delight. I can't wait to see how the altered timeline plays out at the ministry.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. There is more, much more... Thankyou for the review.
Well, I must admit that I read this when it first posted, and I am just now finding a moment to leave a review. So, there are probably things that were worthy of mention, but I may not remember to say so.I loved the fireworks. It is just as satisfying here as it was in canon that Umbridge gets a dose of what she has coming to her, but I loved the staff's reaction to them. They were almost child-like in the way they joined in the fun, making the fireworks multiply and cause more trouble.Good for Hermione for starting the game to keep the students distracted while practicing some skills and maybe making new friends. I was pleased when Severus told her how he felt about that. Then she encounters him in the dungeons and things don't go so well. A huge change from their earlier interaction. I wish he would let her be his friend. Yes, she is his student and they have to have some boundaries, but there in his office, just the two of them, he could have used a friendly ear to talk things out, or just let her comfort him in whatever way is feasible given their situation. It isn't doing him any good to rage alone. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the department of mysteries fiasco.Great chapter, as always.

, not a problem, I got a chuckle on the first statement.
The fireworks – I love fireworks and did feel jipped in canon since Harry was in Umbridge’s office we don’t get to see all the fun! So I really enjoyed playing with that concept. Of course the teachers would ‘play’ with them. Wouldn’t you? lol I loved the line where Minerva admonishes Rolanda – I will admit it here, Minerva’s actions are exactly what I’d have done. shhh
Yes, well I did want to use those scarves in some way. lol I’m glad that you liked how I did the game. Of course Hermione would find a way to mix academics and fun!
Severus is such a multi-layered character. He celebrated alone, toasting her game. He wallowed in anger and frustration alone, (maybe some grief since the memory was recalled.) He doesn’t open up easily and she doesn’t know how to get/reach out to adultSeverus like she could teenSeverus. What she hasn’t figured is that it would be the same, that quiet tone and gentle touch, only she still has too much respect to push/insinuate herself on her teacher. No it’s not doing him any good, but then, he is how he is. Some will change in time. Not giving anything away here, though.
Thank you very much for your comments and opinions. I appreciate your sticking with me on this story and for the review.
I am really enjoying this story. I hope you update soon. Thanks!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. That means a lot to me. Thank you for the review.
I just wanted to add that I loved the fireworks! Even the teachers were enjoying themselves. I also loved Capture the Scarf. I used to love playing Capture the Flag as a kid, and magic makes it so much better. I particularly thought it was keen of Hermione to include everyone, that way there were no houses involved.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
I'm delighted that you enjoyed the fireworks. lol and who doesn't love capture the scarf. Yes, and by dividing everyone into Normans and Saxons there was no house rivalry. I'm glad that you enjoyed that as well. Thank you for the review, doll. Happy reading.
I feel bad for Hermione. She was just trying to help, now she's being ignored even by Severus. I hope things work out.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Yes, this will. Sometimes guys don't see that they are shutting us out when it's really that they are absorbed in what they are doing... but then, This relationship has come a long way. Thank you for reading and for the review.
Still enjoying this fic. Thanks for updating!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
I'm so glad that you are. Thank you for reading and for the review.
continued. “Are you aware, Miss Granger, that Mr.
Longbottom’s marks on his essays are generally
higher than your own?”
like how the teachers are distracting umbridge for
the da. loved that ss knocked her out
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Yes, well, I like Neville and I can see him as the type to take his marks seriously, considering he has to prove himself to his Gran to whom he never seems to 'stack up' to until after his involvement in the Department of Mysteries. So even if Neville can't brew well, under Snape's watchful eye, he is really attentive to his essays, getting/writing well thought out and well substantiated essays within the allotted length, which Snape likes. Also, I like that dig, that in essence he’s telling her that her marks on essays are not as high as someone she thinks needs her help all the time.
Yes, well in this story, Dumbledore is aware and approves of Harry’s Defense group, and the teachers who are in with him, support it too. Too bad the other professors are not holding secret clubs like Severus is to further thwart Umbridge’s interference.
Of course he did! Who would want to sit through a hour with that bitch-witch, and he is quite gifted with potions. I bet she wakes up and doesn’t even know she’d been drugged. LOL
Thank you for reading and for the reviews.
75 degrees hot?underage magic?glad to see her parents upset at her leaving
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
England has a temperate maritime climate: it is mild with temperatures not much lower than 0 °C (32 °F) in winter and an average high of 21 °C (70 °F) it has reached temperatures as high as 32 °C (90 °F) in summer. Since weather records began, the highest temperature recorded was 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) on 10 August 2003 at Brogdale in Kent, while the lowest was −26.1 °C (−15.0 °F) on 10 January 1982 in Edgmond, Shropshire. The weather is frequently relatively damp and is changeable. The coldest months are January and February, the latter particularly on the English coast, while July is normally the warmest month. Months with mild to warm weather are May, June, September and October. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year.
I know that to anyone who lives in areas where the temperatures are normally warmer, like in Arizona USA or S. Calif. USA where we have summers in the 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) frequently, that doesn’t seem all that hot. However, in OoTP, the year that JKR wrote the book, temperatures were in excess of 26.7°C (80 °F), which to her was scorching hot. (I looked up the weather for the summer of 1996 in several sites and sources... The warmest years in the entire 340-year record occurred in 1990 and 1999. The summer of 1995 had a record of 26 hot days in a row, where the average had only been 7 days in a row. (I think this was when she was writing OoTP and mentioned the temperatures in the beginning of the book)
Generally, summer temperatures in England seldom go above 30 °C (86 °F), which happens more frequently in London and the South East than other parts of the country, and Hermione and her family are on the coast, near the beach, and the temperatures would be cooler there. Somewhere I found the information that along the coast that year, the temperature was 23.8 °C (75 °F) but I rounded it to 24°C.
But to me that’s mild weather. I have no idea where you hale from.
Underage magic is any magic used by a wizard or witch outside of school who has not passed their OWL exams. According to Wikki: Underage magic is any magic used by a wizard or witch who is under seventeen years of age outside of school – but this seems off because Fred and George do magic all the time in Grimmauld Place and are not reprimanded for it, only for startling Molly and Apparating all over the house instead of using the stairs.Of course her parents would be upset – they had plans for the summer and haven’t seen Hermione for nine months.
no revealing the the dark mark in front of harry
and co?
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Okay, here is the thing. All, well almost all, of the Harry Potter stuff that is from Harry's POV in the books, are as it is as it was in the books, unless I change it. I went from before the third task, where Severus warns Hermione about the creatures brought in for the Champions to face -- jumping over everything that happened during the task and immediately after -- to Severus facing the Dark Lord and having to explain why he didn't come to him in the graveyard when he'd been summoned. So in the HUGE gap between these scenes, incert pages of POA and assume it happened as it did in canon. So yes, revealing the Dark Mark happened. Harry and Co know he is a Marked Death Eater who's now spying again for Dumbldore. And in the next chapter, Hermione finds out that she's targeted by DE's and her family is at risk... so guess who informed the Order of her impending danger? None other. and that chapter starts on July 15th. There is a month gap in which Hermione and co can have assimulated the information and discussed it. I hope that helps? I'll be doing the same thing for OoTP and HBP, typing what happenes behind the Harry-scenes and Potter-POV, showing you what's different and what the relationship between Severus and Hermione change only. Any gaps, fill in with canon. Okay?Thankyou for reading and I'm so sorry if this is confusing. I appreciate the review and if you have any questions, as always, ask me and I'll answer you. Hugs and Happy reading.
I love all the little twists you throw into this story. The slight changes to canon make the plot much deeper. I'm very excited to see what you change next! Thanks for sharing this great story.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. I'm glad you are enjoying my story. Thank you very much for the pretty stars and the review.
You've done a great job a) devising a complex plot and b) conveying said plot skillfully and clearly. That's quite the hat trick! As always, am looking forward to the next installment.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. I know this type of Time-Turner stroy can make some people's head spin, so I'm trying to help keep things straight. Especially since there are several jumps(Hermione's) and timelines(Severus') to this story. As soon as I get the chapters back from my beta's I'll submit them. Thank you very much for the review and your kind words.
Love it!!! So cannot wait for a new chapter... please!!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you. I have more coming. Thank you for the review.
Wow! So much happened in this chapter! It was great. And thank you for converting feet to meters. It was so much clearer for me.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Yes, I packed in a bit there didn't I? lol I wrote it out as feet first, then realized, thanks to a review, that I messed up and redid the bit in meters. But since I can't really fathom distances in meters, I kept the 'in feet' bit for readers like me, who wouldn't get it. lol (So doll, it was much clearer for me in feet as well. lol) Thank you,
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
, for the review. I hope you're having a great week. bea~
Well, I wasn't confused until you went and explained things, LOL. I guess that just means I didn't know I was confused :) But it really does make sense, the way you've spelled it out. I am thrilled that we are getting into the thick of Severus and Hermione alone time. No sex this year, no problem. I find that while I am a fan of such things, that is not what I crave from their relationship in this story. They had such a good thing going as their younger selves, and then that was ripped away from them. I have always felt like they could get that back. Not easily, but that they would find a way. I just want them to share that close bond of friendship they once had. And if down the road things develop further, so be it. I won't feel it necessary, though.I also like the idea of a second defense club- one for Slytherins. I do feel for those poor students who will be expected to join Voldemort's camp, but really don't want to. A difficult position to be in for sure. This has me very excited for more!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Gosh, I'm sorry I confused you, but i'm glad its all clear now. lol Yes, there is more Severus and Hermione alone time, and it will be student/teacher this year. Yes, they had developed a friendship when she'd bounced back in time and it was ripped away from them. This year, they are finding that they can be comfortable with each other agian, even given dynamics of thier situation. But there is a hurtle that is in front of them. I hop eyou enjoy what I have planned, both for this year and next (HBP). I always thought that JKR didn't like Slytherins. they are bad. full stop. However, I can't help thinking about the situation people found themselves in during the American Civil war - brother against brother, sons fighting against fathers, family members split on diff sides because of their beliefs and friends against friend. I think some of that even happened in WWII. But, then again, who would want to raise their wand against a family member or family friend -as Slytherins will be faced with if they choose sides. It's tragic. The easy way or a writer is to say they ALLL choose to flee and stay out of the fighting. How realistic is that? So the Slytherin Defense club is a way for me to show that not all Slytherins are bad people. sorry for the ranting/blabbering. More is coming, I promise. I'm several chapters ahead and I hope you like what comes next. Thank you very much for the review. happy reading.
Thank you for the update! Interesting that the notebook seems to continue to exist through all the time loops.Too funny to see how all of the teachers seem to be working together against Umbridge to help the DA meet up and that Dumbledore's made Severus the group head (without Harry knowing of course).Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
You are most welcome. Yes, the diary is outside of the timeloops because Severus kept passing it to his younger self. You'll see it agian. Yep, well, did you really think that the staff would be ignorant of what is going on, or be on Umbridge's side? lol Besides, They defy her in the books as well, so I just took it one step furthur. However, DD making SS the DA's faculity advisor was something that struk me as fun -and an excuse to get HG and SS in the same room amicably. Of course, HP is clueless to DD's mishanigans. lol. Thank you very much for the review.
I like him being the advisor to an ilicit club.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. Yep, well who else was Dumbledore gunna ask? lol Besides, I bet he volunteered - I know my Severus-muse did! He thought it a great idea. Thank you for the review.
Thank you for the a/n. I think I was able to follow the explanation in the story fairly well, but the a/n helped to make things clearer. I enjoy reading an author's thoughts and explanations for their story.I was also excited to read in a response to another review that chapters 26 and 27 are with your betas. Yea! That's good news for us, your devoted fans and readers. I know these chapters are important for the developement of the relationship between S and H, but I find myself growing impatient for more of a personal interation between the two, and Hermione is still too young. Did like Severus' smiling at Hermione during detention that reminded her of his 6th year person.Keep up the good work, Bea. Eagerly awaiting your next chapters.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
, thank you. I'm glad it helped. Yes, i ahve 26 and 27 with my beta and I'm working on chapter 29 actully this weekend. (also the next chapter of Plight is in queue) There is more interaction between Severus and Hermione coming, and there will be some development between them, but she is still too young and he's not at a place to be able to see her as anything but a student and someone who meant something to him as a teen. You'll see. I hope you like what comes. Thank you very much for the review. Happy reading.
At the beginning of this chapter when Severus gave Hermione detention I had a feeling he would be telling her (again) not to help Neville anymore, but it never occurred to me that her desire to help her classmate could be a reason why he always did so badly in class. He'd never had a chance to learn from his mistakes. Very clever, Bea.
I liked what Hermione told Harry and Ron when they questioned her on why she thought they should review Mad-Eye's lecture notes and Lockhart's books on vampires, werewolves, and trolls. Very astute and something I hadn't thought about. I'll bet she learns to produce a Defensive Charge at will and to be able to control how powerful the surge of magical power will be.
I loved that he told her if she had any questions she couldn't ask any of her other professors about their curriculum to bring them to him. I wasn't sure she actually understood what he meant at the time, but whether she did or not made no difference because he told her at the end of the chapter that he would be teaching her DADA privately. The invisible ink that she can use to tell him about Harry's dreams or ask her questions is a brilliant idea, and being able to get in touch with him by speaking Toopsy's name and her message makes me feel better about her chances of surviving an emergency.
The part of this chapter that made me smile the most is the way all the professors colluded to keep Umbridge occupied when it was likely that the DA would be meeting to learn defensive spells. I laughed out loud when it hit me that Severus had set up an appointment with the Toad and then drugged her sugar and switched her tea so he could safely meet with Hermione to tell her that he was to be her secret faculty adviser for Dumbledore's Army.
I hope Severus' own Defense Classes with his carefully selected Slytherins will pay big dividends. When he read that entry in the back of the Diary that described the horrible outcome of an earlier time line, I thought how very much timing has to do with everything that happens.
Thanks again for a kick-arse chapter!!!
Beth
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
I rather like the idea that Neville isn’t stupid or inept. He’s such a nice guy and if he’d not been so intimidated by Severus he might have done far better in Potions. However… So Yes, I thought, have Severus tell her that he was aware of how the students did and that no one ever blew up a cauldron in his classes and that she was actually hindering Neville, not necessarily helping him. I also liked the idea that Neville did better on his essays than Hermione, Severus’ opinion, and how that would have shocked her. lol
Yes, well, those professors did teach them something and Lockhart was taking credit for other wizard’s accomplishments – so the information would be valid. Just not Lockhart. Hmmm, about the charge. Possibly. lol
I think he’s still trying to be sly and keep his true intentions to the vest, so to speak, but Hermione is a bit more dense than the average Slytherin, so took her a while to get it. lol However, yes, they will have time together and she will be able to communicate with him if she needs to. The ink and Toopsy are going to come in handy.
You’re not the only one that liked that the staff colluded against Umbridge. In canon, they defied her by not helping her in any way possible, so this was only one more way they could excerpt their rebellion. Besides, the staff knows what is out there, and they would trust Dumbledore over Umbridge anyway, imho. Oh I’m sure that Severus showed up for his appointment, but as they (he faking it) sipped their tea, Umbridge would have fallen asleep – leaving him free to slip away. Clever guy.
Severus’ group of Slytherins – I have plans. I have enjoyed the opinions of the reviewers. Sorry for the rant: In the American Civil War, the men who fought, and most did, had to take sides. History tells us that in the war, father fought against son, brother against brother and friend against friend … it wasn’t pretty. That had to be tough, facing someone you grew up with, someone you may have liked who took the opposite side of you because of what they believed in. I often wonder if some of that didn’t happen in WWII as well. Still, to have that pressure put on you to join someone who you are opposed to, to know that you could lose face to family and friends, or be disowned, or worse killed, and yet know that you are opposed to everything they stand for – or just be totally opposed to the methods of the Dark Lord – that’s got to be tough. Many of these kids in Slytherin are not liked/trusted by the students from the other houses, I know, and so they might not really want to give their lives for the school – but we’re talking about the wizarding world, their world. So yes, I have a select group who, like OC’s Serena Wilkes, Darias Kennecott, Raithe Macrae, and Aldebaran Urguhart, are faced with being forced to take the Dark Mark.
So when you see the ‘possible’ outcomes mentioned in the diary, it’s obvious why Severus is taking the risk with these kids. Like you, I hope it helps, I haven’t typed that part of the story yet. lol
Beth, thank you for the review. I love your comments and appreciate your support. Happy reading, friend.
I am so glad you updated! I love this story - I love your Severus and Hermione and I love how in some ways this is the story behind the story. Like how Dumbledore knows about Dumbledore's Army and has Vector figure out when the meetings are and then the other professors thwart Umbridge. This is one of my favorite kinds of stories - canon (sort of) but filling in the holes of what Harry doesn't know or see. Well, you writing is wonderful and I just really look forward to an update!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. I love writing 'behind the scenes' stories, where as a writer I can fill in the 'gaps' with all sort of mischief. Yes, well, DD does seem to know everything that goes on in the castle and the professors can't be all that blind to everything, now can they? I mean they run the place for crying out loud. lol In other stories I've read and liked Vector was in the Order, so who else would DD turn to for equations? I'm flattered that you like my writing and I hope you enjoy the rest of the story. Thak you for reading and for the review.
I admit, I get a little tired-head when I try to make sense of the different timelines. However I'm trusting you to keep everything straight.
Ive really enjoyed the story thus far and can't wait til next time. Great Job!!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Okay, that fair enough, and yes, I have it all straight. We are in timeline3, Hermione's fifth year and all is not going well outside the school, Dolores is trouble and ... well, Severus is trying to train some of his Slytherins to resist the Dark Lord (or if not resist, they will have to walk in shadow until the time comes to actively choose and take a stand like he does.) I'm glad that you are enjoying the story. I hope you like the rest of it as well. Thank you for the review, and if you need clairfying, ask me, okay?
Oh, my... despite the very clear explanation, I could still use a chart diagram. But I think Severus and Hermione have finally worked out the kinks of time travel and this current timeline should succeed. I hope the Slytherins that Severus is mentoring will successfully escape recruitment; if even one of them is recruited, it would be very dangerous for Severus. Thanks for the new chapter!!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
You are very welcome for the chapter. I'm sorry the a/n was confusing. I don't know what you mean that Severus and Hermione have worked out the kinks? Time will tell if this timeline is better or needs tweaking. lol But email me if you want to see the chart, okay. Hmmm, recruitment, yeah right, the seventh-year Slytherins face the Dark Lord upon leaving Hogwarts. Some, sixth-years as well. Parental expitations and all. and yes, It's very dangerous beyond the walls of Hogwarts. Thank you very much for the review.
So glad to see this one updated. I love this story so much. It is progressing slowly but believably, and that is important to me. I always want to see logical progressions in relationships. Their interactions are very believable under their current circumstances. So physical affections would be out of the question until she is out of school, or until she at least is no longer his student. I'll be very curious as to how she takes the Dumbledore murder. Will he confide in her before hand so he still has at least one ally?Anyway, great job. I look forward to more, as always.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
Thank you very much. I have 26 and 27 with my beta now, so as soon as I finish cleaning them up for presentation - I'll share them with you! I know that there is a 'going along' aspect to my story now, but there are little things stuck in that point forward, really. But she's only in 5th year and that's still way too young, even if Severus has fond recollections of her from his sixth year, he can't go there. His ethics and morals and all. I'm really pleased that you think that the progression is realistic. I wnat that for this story. Oh, the question - well, you'll have to wait and see. Truthfully I'm still finishing OoTP and haven't gotten that far yet. I have thoughts as to what I might/want to do in my outline, but I'm following canon as far as the Harry filter is concerned, although there is a few differences planned. So you'll have to wait to see I'm afraid. Thnak you very much for the review. I appreciate it.
I must say, for you to come up with that explanation for the timelines, plus explaining the meter-feet conversion, is pure genius. I understand the jist of what you're saying, which for me is a miracle. I'm glad Severus is offering his help in matters, which stems from the diary entries. Would this change in the timeline ultimately create a Severus4, since we're now on 3?
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of Consequences of Meddling with Time)
You are very welcome. While I know it made a very l o n g a/n, I thought it would be helpful. So far no, we are still on Severus3, since he's following the 'plan' he set in motion in this timeline. Only if Severus - or Hermione - decides to go back in time at some point, would the timeline diverge again creating Seveurs4. lol But yes, his current actions are because of the enteries in the diary. It's actually a very important little thing. Thank you very much for the review. Happy reading, hon
