Minerva has just finished her first term teaching. A series of misunderstandings leads to an embarrassing moment, injured feelings, regret, growing understanding, then resolution. A Minerva McGonagall fic set in 1957, with forays into the past. More than a Romance; stories within stories. Features Minerva, Albus, and Poppy, with appearances by Slughorn, Grubbly-Plank, Hagrid, Flitwick, Moody, Riddle, Grindelwald, and other canon characters. Not DH-compliant. Disregards DH.
Nineteen Parts.
Most content T-rated, but ratings rise to M and MA for several later chapters. Overall M rating reflects later content.
Pertinent warnings in individual chapter summaries.
Voted First Place, Minerva McGonagall: Legacy Fic, in the HP Fanfiction Fan Poll Awards Spring/Summer 2013.

Reviews for Resolving a Misunderstanding
This is slow torture, but I can't really complain. If I didn't have my RaM fix to look forward to, I would feel quite lost. Again, masterful characterization. Their relationship is changing, degree by degree, and Albus is shifting his perspective on himself and his suitability, but it is all subtle and natural. Wonderful! Minerva is shining, she is being such a help to him, and so understanding and patient and clever. I love it.I enjoyed Malcolm, as always. Almost spit wine on my screen at the Nocturnal Dancing Umbratrope! That was great! You do the castle justice. Hogwarts is my favorite aspect of HP--who would ever want to leave such a fabulous place?! And dang, but isn't Albus fun, and the perfect person to live there with. Prince Charming be damned... I like little funky things braided in the beard, but then I have a thing for Antryg Windrose, too, and sometimes I can't help some crossover between the two. And all these portraits of young wizards with flowing beards holding their, erm, staffs. (fanning self). Maybe things are not moving quite fast enough, my visualization is a bit off, ha.Hope you are feeling better. Thanks for another wonderful chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Oh, yes, the wizards and their, er, staffs. haha!
I'm glad you think I do the castle justice. I do try!
Thanks for the review! RaM will eventually come to an end, but hopefully you'll find the conclusion satisfying. I hope hope hope to write a sequel, but we shall see! I may just need a break from writing chapter fics for a while.
Thanks again (and I'm glad you liked the Nocturnal Dancing Umbratrope!)

The last few chapters have been amazing....i just read them all back to back...I've been without internet for a few weeks and what an amazing gift to come back to so many of your chapters.
poor poor deluded albus. he's so worried about rejection. i have a feeling that minerva will eventually help him get over that though. although giving minerva the o with clothes on should in of itself give him confidence! lol
I so sympathize with minerva wanting albus to make a move, being desperate for it, in fact but also needing/wanting to respect his feelingsi'm so glad albus finally confided in her about the whole valerianna business,
excellent scene with quin at hogsmeade..i do love him
i had been worried that once these two figured out they loved each other, you'd end htre story abrutply. yet you've managed to realistically hit the pause button on the advancement of their relationship
and oh what a chapter! minerva coaxing albus the way she did was totally sexy
and your ending on minerva's own self-conconsciousness is a very interesting way to go. maybe they could learn from each other?
lovely as always and can't wait for more!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I wouldn't have dreamed of ending the story abruptly after having let the rest of the story unfold as it did.
I'm very glad you enjoyed the chapters! Thanks very much for the review!

This role reversal between Albus and Minerva makes this segment of the story really special. In matters of physical intimacy, Albus is the shy one and Minerva...The phrase lusty wench comes to mind. The image of the well-starched, prim and proper Professor McGonagall is, erm, rather situational?Minerva, after dark. No starch in that girl.(Snicker)

I'm sure many people might think I'm rather well-starched, LOL, and it is, indeed, situational! heh heh heh Of course, there are those who know better . . . hee!

Ooooh, they are a SO LOVELY couple \o/Especially in this chapter, I must say, they seemed to be developing a delicate and yet funny relationship. The way they tease each other is so pretty ^^I just loved this chapter! As always, I'm looking forward for the next one, and that big thank you ;] *Marina

Another lovely chapter. So now Malcolm knows! I wonder how the "catching up" will go?! Can't wait for the next update!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thanks! I had the flu, so I haven't written much and am quite behind. It will likely be several days before I'm able to update, unfortunately.

I do believe that Minerva just proposed to Albus.Let's hear it for the liberated witch of the 1950's!!!I'm sure you have this planned, but I wonder how long they'll be able to hold out before Minerva has Albus backed up against a wall? She does have that wall sex fantasy....
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
And he has a door-sex fantasy/dream, so, who knows!?
Don't miss the next chapter . . . it's definitely MMAD. ahem. yes.

LOL the chapter title was definitely worth a giggle! And poor Minerva, admit it or not, she's got it bad for our dear Albus! Wonderful as always
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
She definitely seems to be working on a crush, doesn't she? ;) Glad you liked the title! (If I were any good at filks . . .)

Oh good! Dad's on her side now :) The comfort Minerva feels with Albus is so evident in the way she so easily admonishes both him and her father for talking with out her - it's wonderful!

Oooh! A secret project... nevermind Minerva being anxious about what it is, I'm dying to know! Lovely chapter again, it shows the great respect between Albus and Minerva.I have to admit when I started reading your story the word count both intrigued and scared me - but your writing flows so nicely, the amount of it doesn't seem like a burden at all anymore, more a thrill that I know I've got so much more of it I can read :D
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I'm really glad the word count didn't scare you off! I think of the story as having very distinct sections, each with its own "mini-arc" that fits within the larger arc of the story. I have een told by more than one person that the story is addictive! ;)
Thanks very much for the review!

I just had a thought about how interesting it would have been if Grindewald had been Hitler. Then again, perhaps for us mere Muggles, its better that he wasn't! ANother very sweet chapter, I like the way Albus has given Minerva responsiblities and privileges he wouldn't to the other students - she certainly seems to have deserved them.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Yes, that is a frightening thought for us Muggles, isn't it?! There's more about Grindelwald and his tactics and so forth in several different places in the story. (This was all planned out and plotted before DH came out, obviously!)
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! There's quite a bit of variety, I suppose you could say, in the moods of the different sections of the story.
Thank you very much for reviewing!

That is very cool, that Dumbledore's right there with Chruchill sorting out Hitler (pity he couldn't just avada kadavra him!) :D And the conversation between them is very sweet. Nice one!

I loved the discussion on Muggle-Witch relationships - it was never touched on in the books (as far as I remember, at least not in detail) and it's nice to get a perspective on how hard that would be!Lovely chapter, I'm really looking forward to the time I have a chance to read the next one.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
It struck me that more than one character had a parent whose other parent was a clueless Muggle until after the marriage, and I was thinking how difficult the situation would be, and I wished there was more about it. But, of course, that wasn't a focus.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you continue to! :)

Oooh, I do hope we get to see what sort of things Minerva has for her office! Nice chapter, off to have tea with Poppy now... :D

I love the play of chess game intertwined with the play of the conversation--awesome! And a clever way for them to have a difficult conversation. Wonderful bit of writing!Loved the blown kiss she could feel--I missed that last night, I was really too tired even to be reading. Also loved Wilspy's giggle. The portraits are great. The Silent Knight must have an interestiing tale to tell if he will! I suspect, though, that Minerva will find a new home for bedside Phineus.Albus *is* adorable, with his socks and his wards and his offbeat sense of humor. Learning to accept affection as well as give it is going to take him some time, but he's already changing. The characerization is so deep--there are so many layers to Albus and Minerva, as well as the others, and you don't overlook anything in their thoughts and actions. Amazing!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you very much! I'm especially glad, of course, that you find Albus adorable! :)
Thanks for reviewing! (I'd respond more, but I am too tired myself, at the moment!) I hope hope hope I can get the next chapter up by Sunday. But we will see. I've had the flu this week, fever and all. Quite lovely.

Awww, now that's sweet, the memory of second year MM and hiding the text of her book. I hope all goes well for them at lunch!

Lunch is a ways off, chapter-wise, as we learn more about their history with each other. Wait till dinner! ;)

Well - I never thought I'd read a MM/AD fic, but I couldn't help but give it a go when I saw how many chapters you had posted! So far so good, I'm quite enjoying it :D Poor Minerva - Albus walking in just as she said that!

Poor Minverva! I feel completely embarrassed for her! But at least Albus' down fall is he always sees the good in people - I'm sure he won't be too horrible to her, at least I hope not!

I'll have to review more fully tomorrow, I'm too tired to be coherent. But thank you for the update! I especially liked that Albus recognized se needed some "special attention." (And I'm sad about his guilt about Dervilia. He deserves some happiness--and security--in love.)Cheers.

You constantly have me looking up new words! "Canty" and "bucolic" were the ones I looked up this time. I'm really enjoying these pleasant, peaceful chapters full of playfulness and banter between Minerva and Albus. I want an Albus in my life, no fair!! Especially the way you write him, with green snakes and ducklings on his socks. :)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
"Canty" is a fun old word, isn't it? It sounds quite Minerva-ish to me.
Glad you liked Albus's socks!

Albus definitely has the romance part of things down. Of course, he has about 100 years of saved up romance to spend and all of it on Minerva. Dessert? Of course Minerva wants dessert, silly goose. Albus' version of dessert up against the battlements was close, but not quite the cream on top of the cherry. (Sorry, that was terrible. I've no idea what possessed me, but I didn't erase it either.)So Malcolm likes table tennis. Perhaps they could swap and Albus could teach him ten pin bowling? Now, it's going to be meet the parents in a whole different context. That's got to be strange when Albus is old enough to be their grandfather.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
He's got a big romantic streak that hasn't had an adequate outlet in . . . um, as you say, a very long time.
Your description made me smile (and I haven't felt much like smiling today), so I'm glad you didn't erase it! haha!
They could have a "Muggle pastime" day and play all kinds of fun Muggle games!
Albus certainly is feeling awkward. Everyone will to some degree, but Albus sees it as most particulalry peculiar and unsettling. He'd first seen Merwyn when Merwyn was a baby and he himself was an adult, after all. Eep! Strange!

If Albus has even the slightest concern about performance issues and being rejected, I'll be happy to forward him some of the e-mails I've been getting that promise amazing things will happen to body parts I don't have.It is rather funny to see the justaposition of the usual story line. The woman is supposed to be sexually unsure of herself while the man is a sex machine. In this case, Minerva is confident and is holding back from making the first move while the most powerful wizard in Britain is worrying about his ability to satisfy her.
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
LOL! Recycling your spam by sending it to a fictional character? Come to think of it . . . that might not be bad! haha!
In RL, of course, men are often nervous about sex, even if they aren't wrecks about it. And being worried about his ability . . . doesn't mean he's not a sex machine! haha!
I'm home sick with some weird bug, and it's effecting my ability to say anything very coherent, so I'll just say thanks, and that I'm happy I'm not doing the usual old story line! That can be fun. Whichever way.
Gotta go get some tea. Urg.

"...and kissing her lips lightly, moving his own lips over hers very gently, then drawing back and whispering, '“Now for dessert, yes, my love?”'That set the mood, and the anticipation, to say nothing of the setting! I'm so glad he was able to tell her what that witchy bitch said, so she could help him. I could hear Quin's wise words in Minerva's response. The results proved she handled it well!A wonderful, lemony moment! I'm loving this slow waltz to deeper intimacy. (Although I must beg a little here for a quick update.<g>)I'm still swooning for Malcolm, too. He's hilarious and interesting and very sexy!Wonderful, wonderful chapter!
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
I'm glad you're swooning for Malcolm. Gertrude also finds him hilarious (well, she would call him "amusing"), interesting, and sexy!
Glad you're enjoying the process of growing intimacy.
Don't know yet when the next update will be. This week is a very busy one. But hopefully it will be within the week!
Thanks very much for the review! (I'm sleepy, so forgive me if I rambled.)

That line that Albus spoke to Minerva about her being his sun and stars put tears in my eyes. You are such a talented writer, and I'm so glad that you've consistently updated this story so that I never feel like I have to read 8 chapters back to remember what in the world is going on! I'm very glad Minerva talked Albus out of most of his self-consciousness...hopefully she'll get a chance to truly put those fears to rest soon! ;)
Response from MMADfan (Author of Resolving a Misunderstanding)
Thank you! I appreciate knowing that! :)
I try not to post a chapter unless I have at least one more in reserve, so that way I don't update and then have a long dry spell (unless I plan for it, like over the holidays). I know what it's like to have to reread large chunks of a story in order to remember what's going on! So I try to write a lot when I have the time, knowing that I will have weeks when I can't write at all.
With every day, Minerva and Albus will become closer, and Minerva will certainly bring him completely beyond his fears. That night, though, he actually just wanted to savour the experience he had just had with Minerva, cherish the moment -- not that he still doesn't have some insecurities, but that wasn't his primary motivation for stopping there. :)
Thanks again for the review!

I am so loving this part of the story, as they finally open up to each other and share their love!Sweet Albus, and his insecurities. I undersand them more fully now, and it's very believable, as always. I am looking forward to Minerva helping him to get beyond this misconception he has about his virility. Chocolate-covered cherries could be a very useful tool for that! I'm also interested in hearing what Gertrude has to say now, both in her letter, and in conversation with Minerva.I love how you have them reveal little things to one another, how they both relive moments from the past few months now that they can speak freely. It is so natural, and gives such depth to the characters. Wonderful work! Can't wait for the next chapter!

Yes, my large box of tissue came in very handy.*sigh* Words fail me, except to say how uttterly happy I am that they are together at last, and know (and believe!) of their mutual love.I was trying to decide if they would fall on each other and come up for air a few days later, or if they would savor the moment a bit more. Now I know<g> and it is pefect.About ever other word I did keep saying--"Does he STILL not get it?" Isn't Minerva going to have fun convincing him?!I loved her sweet teasing of him, especially her remark "I doubt you could be fast enough."They are so beautiful, so perfect for each other. Thank you for creating such a wonderful story! I wish you a joyous holiday, and a very happy 2008! P.S. From the previous chapter, "Tru-love"--ah, Malcolm! Swoon!

Yup, when the unsentimental ones fall, they fall HARD! lol! Malcolm definitely has it bad!
Glad you liked Minerva's teasing of Albus. She will get him comfy with the idea of moving a bit faster, shall we say?
Thank you very much for the review! I'm very happy you enjoyed the chapter, box of tissues at the ready!
