Reviews for Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P)
Oh, Miss Smith - all the trust in humanity has been stripped out of you! ;_; I'm looking forward to more of this subplot developing! ::hugs::
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I have such a soft spot for Jocelyn. :) She needs someone to take her interests to heart!!Thanks for the review.
I love, love, love how you've fleshed out Professor Vector and brought out a magic I've rarely seen used to this extent in a story. I'm looking forward to more of this thread!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! Arithmancy is Hermione's favourite subject, after all. And I do think that a magical/mathematical way of predicting future events could only be useful in the upcoming battles. :)
"It was late, it was dark, it was unseasonably cold. He was 36 years old and sitting alone in a children’s playground. He had just sworn an Unbreakable Vow to murder Albus Dumbledore in the inevitable circumstance that Draco Malfoy failed to do so."THOSE are the most powerful 44 words I have yet encountered in this story. IN ANY STORY I have read of late. In fact, this chapter was punctuated throughout with short and powerful scenes, one right after the other. I liked it! Kept me on my toes!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm so glad that you like it! Thanks for leaving such lovely reviews. :)Poor Snape, he deserves so much better than he got!
Run, Hermione, run! ^_^It's nice to see Hermione and Ron flirt....btw, you make me think slashy thoughts about Harry and Draco right in this chapter. That makes me happy, even if that's not where you're going with this... ^_^
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad that makes you happy! I do think that they make a rather convincing couple--though not necessarily a happy one, or at least not until years of therapy. :)Thanks for the review!
I really, really love stories that focus on parts of the WW where Harry is not around. It's not that I don't like Harry, but there is just so much interesting stuff going on when he isn't around...
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I agree. I find it fascinating to think about what he doesn't know. :)Thanks for the review.
Gosh, when I read this I couldn't get out of my mind how I kept imagining how Snape was reading/watching over Hermione like Col. Brandon read to and watching over Marianne in Sense and Sensibility. Was the film and novel part of your inspiration for this chapter or am I reading too much Jane Austen?
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I've read the novel, or course, but I haven't actaully seen the film (I know! I'm a philistein!). I didn't have it in mind, but hey, now that you point it out, I can see the resonances. Thanks for the review!
Voldemort is a little creepy here. Like "Creepy Uncle" creepy. But I like it. ^_^I like your handle of Dumbledore, I think you've got him pretty balanced. Some write him too cold and some write him too warm and fuzzy, but you've got him just right. IMHO.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I think that the two of them balance each other out quite well, actually ;)Thanks for the review, I'm glad that you like the story.
Okay, so, I made it all the way to chapter 7 before I realized I was being an asshole by not leaving a review. But I suppose that is a compliment in and of itself?I'm not sure where you are going with this, but I'm coming along for the ride.I do like how you've tapped into Snape's singing abilities - that's what hooked me and Hermione's response just nailed it for me.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad to hear that you're hooked! Thanks, particularly, for taking the time to go back and leave comments. I'm glad to hear that you liked it. :) I've always been fascinated by the use of music in the wizarding world.
This was exquisitely beautiful. Thank you so much for writing it.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you so much for reading it! And thank you once more for leaving a review. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it. :)
Interesting way to exchange Felix Felicis, I wonder if that sets up interesting happenings in the next part you are going to be writing...which I'm very happy to hear.Look forward to reading your future stories.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! Exchanging the Felix Felicis in such a manner was a rather Slytherin move on Severus' part--he got something out of it while acheiving his goal of making sure she took the lucky potion. The sequel is under way--6 chapters up, another poised to be vaildated, and a promise to update weekly. I hope you enjoy it. :) Thanks again for the review.
Wow, this story is just so painful. Of course it was painful from the POV of JKR. These little differences give it some hope but even more sadness in many ways. I'm glad Snape has Granger as someone who cares about him. The hardest thing about the book was that nobody ever really cared about him. He cared about other people in his own twisted way but nobody took care of him. It's no wonder he joined the death eaters. Anyway, it's all just fiction but still the tragedy of Snape pulls at my heart. So, of course, I will read the sequel and hope that he gets something good eventually.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad that you liked it, and I agree that it is a sad story. Snape is such a misunderstood man. :( At least Granger understands him ;pHave fun reading the sequel, and thank you for all of the reviews and feedback you have left while reading this one! :)
Am I interested. AGG, of course. I won't rest until I see how this plays out. LOL. Well, maybe I'll rest. I also have to get off my ass and cook dinner and clean. Still, I do want to keep reading.Poor Snape. HBP is so heartbreaking and Dumbledore's death is the part that hurts me the most.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
*grins* I think some rest would be a good idea!! Particuarly since I'm working as hard as I can to post the sequel, but still that only works out at one chapter a week ;)I'm really thrilled that you're enjoying the story so much. HBP really is heartbreaking, I do agree. Thanks for the review.
Oh no! This is getting really interesting.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I'm glad you think so! Thanks for the review. :)
Snape, silly man, is always his own worst enemy.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Very true! Thanks for the review. :)
I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter. Great so far!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! It's always nice to read a story knowing that it's finished. :)Thank you for the lovely review.
Oh my god! LOL. What is going on in that potions master's head. I can't wait to read the next bit. Cormac is just disgusting. Yep, this one is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, too!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Ha ha. Thanks! I'm glad to hear you're so caught up in the story. :)Thanks for the review.
There was so much humour in this chapter. I can tell you were really having fun. For example,
'Friends don’t look so goddamn smug when your girlfriend is yelling at you!'
Ahahahaha ... WIN!! Your Lavender rules. Not to mention Hermione's bed disappearing. That was a nice touch.
But the serious business was also well-executed. Hermione's notes on her logic puzzle were so IC, as was Snape's reaction to her assertions. You continually astonish me with the ways you've managed to bend canon to your will and the way you make it look so easy. *tips hat*
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
I have to say that enormous sections of the plot leapt fully formed into my head at the moment of its conception. And when I re-read through the HBP at the late stages of planning, I only had to tweak it in very minor fashion to find it fitting into the book events. Infact, I found lots of tiny details I hadn't clearly remembered that strengthened things.I did have have a lot of fun with this chapter, though. :) Obviously. :)
I got a bit sidetracked by RL (apologies), but wanted to let you know I'm still reading and enjoying. This?
'[E]ither the Order has a plan in place that, once completed, will seem so horrible that many people will lose faith and panic; or one of the people coded into our matrix is a traitor and the success of their particular plan will spell devastation for ours.'
Genius. How neatly you've reinterpreted events to give us a fresh perspective on Hermione's limited and yet painfully insightful awareness of the situation.
And further proof of your genius, as if anyone were in doubt, is that you've managed to take what I consider to be a ridiculously difficult type of magical maths and made it not just interesting but really compelling to someone like me, who barely made it through basic algebra and trigonometry. It's all in the practical application. *g* Brilliant, hon. Really.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Hey there, D. Don't apologise for RL, that stuff is beyond control. I'm glad to hear that you're still reading and enjoying though ;)I was really into maths for a long part of my childhood/early adulthood, and thus really fascinated by that side of Hermione's interests. I think the Arithmancy is something that doesn't get enough attention in fanfic (or in canon, for that matter--I mean, analytical, methodical methods of prediciting the future, that one of the three main characters professes to be her favourite subject??? How come that didn't factor into the story more?). ANYWAY . . . I like maths, and I wanted it to sound almost feasible as well as magical. :) I'm glad you liked it.
Response from diabolica (Reviewer)
I know! Arithmancy is one of those details that JKR dropped and then never picked up again; before HBP I was sure that at some point Arithmancy would become relevant to the ultimate plot resolution, but ... no.What you've done with it is amazing; it's more than just feasible and magical. It's really well anchored in your plot and the perfect way to convey Hermione's mounting suspicions. I've never read much fic where Arithmancy figured in, but here you've provided real food for thought and plot development through twisty predictions and number crunching. Basically, you made me like numbers (at least here; in RL I'm still sceptical) and thus I am in awe of your skill.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Success indeed *grins*
Perfect. The story ends well. You've tied together the things that needed to be, while leaving open the pathway to the next installment. For a SSHG fic, in which Hermione is still a student, the amount of attraction the two of them feel for each other, and their actions because of it, have remained at an appropriate level to their situation. The sharing of the Felix Felices was just right - kudos to that tiny touch of RST in the midst of so much UST!I reiterate my strong interest in the sequel. It's amazing to me that this is your first fic. Everything about it was so well done. Congratulations to you and to your betas, LAxo and WriterMerrin, and the others who've had a hand in its creation. Good jobs all around! Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful story!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Firstly, and most importantly, thanks for the praise for my marvellous betas. They more than deserve it and have been so incredibly helpful in making this story coherent.Secondly, I'm delighted that you enjoyed the story. Your reviews and the rec you gave me over at LJ were totally, mindblowingly lovely. The Felix Felicis kiss was part of my plan for this story from the very beginning; and I tried to make the path leading up to it age and situation appropriate.Thirdly, the sequel is very much in the works. In fact, I did some work on it yesterday when I was stuck on the train . . . Thanks again for the reviews and the encouragement. :)
I'm VERY interested in a SS-and-HG-go-camping sequel, when and if you have it ready for posting. This has been a fabulous story, and I hate to see it end. The Arithmancy scenes with Vector are absolutely wonderful. The two scenes where she brought everything to him and his teary reaction later were brilliant. All of the exchanges between them, the careful way both of them approach their relationship, trying to figure out just what that relationship should mean - again, brilliance. And now, her enlisting his help with her parents' memory modification is, again, a stroke of genius. I hate that the story must come to an end, and am running out of superlatives to uses to describe how fabuliciuosly, wondrilliancely, spendiferously, um, really, really great this story is! :)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you! *grins* Such a lovely range of adjectives you have come up with. There will definitely be a sequel, I promise. And it's not too far away.I'm glad you liked the teary scene. It took me a couple of goes to get that to work. It seemed appropriate, though, since from canon we do know that SS is both prickly on the outside and prone to tears. Poor Snape! :)Thanks again for the review.
I'm getting very nervous that the end of the fic is coming soon, and of how things will play out in that amount of time between Hermione and Snape. *shivers worriedly* Selfishly, I'm glad that the story's already complete, so no waiting for updates!Your characterizations of Hermione, Snape, Viktor, Harry and Ron are just so well done and seem absolutely true to canon. And the entire coffee shop scene was a wonderful bit of 'wizards in Muggle-land.' Great chapter!
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Hopefully you're feeling less nervous about the ending by now!! :)Now I'm wondering what coffee Ron might order in a Muggle coffee shop. Tea, maybe? Or just whatever Harry was having? Thanks for the review.
Turning this scene into Snape's POV was wonderfully done. Bravo, you! Very well written, and so poignant. Yes, I can see that he would take this moment, of any moment, to indulge.
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you. I'm glad that there was a use-value in seeing that scene from a different perspective. I would certainly need a drink after such a situation! :)
This is a very intriguing start to a story. It's so interesting to look at the events of HBP from Severus' point of view - especially to picture this meeting, which we sometimes think didn't take place. (Take that, Bella!)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thanks! :) It was in re-reading HBP *very closely* to write this story that I realised SS had to have known: he tells Bella that AD has recently been injured, thus this has to have happened after he saved AD's hand (the scene the reader doesn't see until the end of DH) and in the AD-desperately-injured-from-the-ring scene, AD and SS talk about Draco's task, thus, SS had to have known about it before Narcissa mentioned it to him QED! :) Which means, of course, that Voldemort trusts SS with a bit more info than we might otherwise have imagined.
what a wonderful rollercoaster ride of a story! i await semi-patiently for the next part. thanks so much
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much! :) I'm delighted that you enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the sequel myself--as it will mean this current mountain of work might dwindle to a more manageable molehill. :)
Oh what a wonderful story. In its sequel, could you please not make the crapilogue happen, and also change it up a little so Severus ends up with Hermione? Just asking :)Thanks darl for writing this fantastic tale.Love Sonia :)
Response from grangerous (Author of Phoenix Song (or, Hermione Granger and the H-B P))
Thank you very much :) I'm glad that you liked it.You wouldn't want me to give away the ending before even beginning the story, would you? ;)Thanks for the review.
