Apart from it being an artefact of considerable antiquity, no one at the Department Of Mysteries could determine what it was. It was taken from the body of a slain Death Eater at the first fall of Voldemort and was, undeniably, of magical origin. Unable to extract its secrets, and unwilling to risk further experiments, the Unspeakables consigned it to the vaults. Or so they thought. Only one wizard may provide the answer, but he has no idea of his connection to it.

"Transfigure something into a bridge and get over it.” That made me LOL.And kisses! And Harry being Harry.Great read.
Response from Phyllidia (Reviewer)
Oh yeah I also forgot to add that I liked Harry's reaction to Papa Snape when he took a traditionaly Severus pose.

Minerva can be quite direct when she has the inclination, bless her. Thanks for reading and reviewing :0)
Lots of great detail in this history. I far prefer SS/HG stories that have other people in them and are more than just a romance. Thanks for making this one.

Best give it a stir, then - we don't want lumps! Hope you got everything done...
Ooh excellent chapter. Lots of info here. Really liked the line "The Half-Blood Prince himself, talking through one of his ideas."

Yes, it was something that he needed to hear after so many years of private angst. Thanks for reading and reviewing!
Good beginning. Severus' uncle seemed interesting. Too bad he's off to be killed. Off to the next chapter! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks mick. I've been so busy my replies have been neglected (sorry!) so the next chapter is up by now :oP and you can find out!
I love your description of the Standing People as "lignacious sentinels" and the yew as resembling "frayed hawsers of corded shadow." It immediately created the mood and seriousness of the occasion for me.
The formality of the Centaurs' gathering also informed me of the gravity of the situation. I like that Röthvar, the young thane, is learning that with responsibility comes the obligation of service.
Being able to see the destruction of the city (Pripyat?) through Sister Clarise gave me chills. But knowing that the warmth of spearhead gave her courage also gave me hope that somehow the coming darkness will be overcome.
The friendship that is developing between Master Tobias and Tocky is wonderful. I was touched by the story Toby shared about how he had met Mistress Eileen. I very much like that Toby has faced up to his past, regretted his behavior, and learned from it. Perhaps the apple hasn't fallen very far from the tree after all, eh?
Severus' meeting with Charity via the Resurrection Stone had to be a very good thing for him. When she told him that "if wizards did it for me, Veil or not, I’d make a move on you" made me grin . I'm glad it was Charity who wanted to speak to him and not Lily... and I'm glad he threw the Stone to the Whomping Willow so that it could never be used again.
Kingsley's conversation with Valentin confirmed his worst fears. “They are a mixture of Muggles and wizards—” What a terrible thing to contemplate! And they are teamed up and led by Dementors!
"In a narrow lane snaking its grimy way into Knockturn Alley, a Dementor waited unseen. In its bony, clawed hand was a scroll – sealed with spell and ward – addressed to Severus Snape."
What in the world kind of message can scroll contain, and why is a Dementor hiding in Knockturn Alley to deliver it to Severus?????
Thanks for another fabulous update.
Beth

Thank you! It's taken me ages to reply - apologies! I've been so crazily busy lately that if a real centaur showed up at work and asked where the conference room was, I'd have showed him/her without thinking it was at all unusual. Glad you liked the small insight into centaur culture - human historical accounts have painted a shadow of savagery around them. 'Perhaps the apple hasn't fallen very far from the tree...' LOL! True! Remember in Canon, when young Severus tells Lily that his father 'doesn't like anything, much'? The same could have been said of him after life had gone in a dark and dangerous direction. I thought Severus deserved some closure with Charity - to imagine what it would be like to watch one of the few people you could be friends with die a brutal death and pretend you didn't care... talk about gutted! I really do hope she gives old Albus what-for! The next chapter shouldn't be too far off - I did the Admin-corrections yesterday. Thanks again for reading and reviewing :o)
Uh oh. I don't like the idea of a dementor waiting for Severus! I wonder what the scroll says... Also Petrus and Toby seem to be fast friends. :)
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi Wyndnfyr! Sorry I took so long to reply - RL has been keeping me on the run :oP The next chapter is in the Admin phase, so finding out what's in the scroll isn't too far off. Thanks for rrading and reviewing :o)
Oh I am captivated! I hope you continue this riviting story.

Thank you! Yes I fully intend to complete the story. So often, I've seen some of my favourite stories abandoned on various sites. When I started writing this one, I made a silent promise to finish it. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

WOW!!! First off, before I forget, will Diesel be okay now that Tobias is being transported to St Mungo's? Second, I am excited that Petrus may become free; he'd be easy to hide at Hogwarts and could help look after the students.Crookshanks is so sweet, giving Severus a bit of dinner. Tobias continues to impress with his skills, holding off more Aurors. Ron and his Bezoar - good for him to have it handy. Lucius isn't going to become Dementor-food when Arawn figures things out? That Arawn is one nasty wizard!Thank you for the new chapter. Very exciting!

Hi June! Yes, Diesel will be fine - he's Eddie's dog but he knows Toby pretty well. BTW he is based on a real dog with a reputation for 'sixth-sensing' a bad egg - so much so that an arrest was made (yep, the local police trusted the dog's opinion). Sure enough, the bloke was wanted for robbery with violence. There's plans for Petrus - Severus has something in mind. Ah, the sweetness of felines - when they want to. The next chapters are coming... Thank you for reading and enjoying!

I can't wait to find out what the Prince family has been protecting all of these years. And to see how Severus finds out what's really going on since his Mother and Uncle(?) seem to have left him no clues. Or are they both alive too? You still have me intrigued! Please give us more soon.

This is simply an amazing story. Your attention to detail is wonderful, it makes the characters so much richer. As much as I love JKR, I am endlessly facinated by the elaborate backstories that the fanfic world creates. I found this by using the "random" link, and I am so glad that I did! It took me some time to read, but it was wholey satisfying to finish the final chapter. If there is one thing that disappoints me, it is the fact that you only have two other stories for me to read! I hope that you continue to write, and that I will be able to stumble upon another work soon. Thanks so much for a great time!

Hi
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
! Thank you very much for the review :o) Reading fanfiction, I often wondered if characters were channeled through from another universe by their original authors and then, once 'let loose', they go looking for other (unsuspecting?) people to write more adventures for them. Once I started writing this story, I became convinced that the characters are real entities! Who knows when one of them will barge into my mindscape, drop an idea on my desk and say 'write about this one!' while helping themselves to tea and biscuits.
I've only just joined this ride, and I'm very happy to have done so. I really enjoy the plot and the charachters. And I like how you give Severus the opportunity to make peace with his father and mother. It may take him some time yet, but I think he'll arrive there in the end. Looking forward to next chapter :)

Stunning! I'm stunned. I fell in love with this fic - there is so much to say but I'm still reeling from it. What a success, congratulations. You crafted a gorgeous world. Giving character to Severus' parents was genius, and the attention to the blurry line between creature and being was just perfect. This is a great response to the HP series, frankly. The fleshing-out of different magical beings was very well done. I am particularly partial to Petrus, my goodness. At a certain point I was more interested in Oriens, Petrus, Toby and Tocky, than I was Hermione or Severus. I'm often less interested in fics that put great emphasis on original characters but this is the absolute exception. This is the history of Severus that does justice to his character and his struggle. I finished this fic late last night and have been thinking about it all day, still puzzling it over. Thank you so, so much. This is a treasure. I'm certain I will reread it sometime.
