Apart from it being an artefact of considerable antiquity, no one at the Department Of Mysteries could determine what it was. It was taken from the body of a slain Death Eater at the first fall of Voldemort and was, undeniably, of magical origin. Unable to extract its secrets, and unwilling to risk further experiments, the Unspeakables consigned it to the vaults. Or so they thought. Only one wizard may provide the answer, but he has no idea of his connection to it.

Reviews for A Place in the World
Severus’ eyes widened as he interpreted Petrus’ Latin. He knew that the stone Being didn’t have the authority to make any sort of binding pronouncement as such… but this unexpected rehearsal of a nuptial Mass set his stomach into what felt like a Celtic knot. He glanced at Hermione, who stared at Petrus with her mouth slightly open and her cheeks a beguiling shade of pink. Feeling unexpectedly coy, he took her hand and turned to face her. Well, I suppose we asked for it, standing side by side before the altar in a Parisian cathedral.***
After several demure attempts, Hermione raised her eyes to look at Severus, her lower lip caught firmly between her teeth. She faced him and took his free hand as Petrus recited an age old prayer with the soulful grace of a poet. She felt her wizard’s presence at her mind’s door and opened herself to hear what he might say: "Hermione… I will… I do."***
Now for The Portal of the Last Judgement... hummmm... If Severus is correct, this could be BIG! “Given Petrus’ observation that the power amplifies the resonance of the bourdon… Would I be correct to assume that this upwelling of power is focussed by the tolling of Emmanuel – similar to the focussing of magical power through a wand?” I can't wait to see what Firenze has to say about that.***
Who was in the upstairs master bedroom?
Toby sat forward. “Just before she told me to run for it… there was a dog barkin’ and… and…”
Severus recalled everything he could about the witnessed memory. “A floorboard creaked upstairs – in the master bedroom.”
“And that floorboard would only creak… When?”
Severus’ posture stiffened. “On a re-bound. I got to know it extremely well. It would only make a noise within several seconds of someone walking on it.” He locked eyes with Tobias. “If there was someone there who shouldn’t have been there, my mother would have known.”
“But what if someone was? Someone she knew about… Or some-bloody-thing.”
Father and son shared a simultaneous, unspoken exchange of the same breathtaking, skin-prickling suspicion—
Who on earth could have been in that bedroom? This chapter is chock full of clues!!!***I'm so glad Oriens got in touch with everyone. I was beginning to worry myself! And now we have a new element in the alliance– highly classified allies that Oriens cannot say anything about. I am wracking my brain to remember a clue or two... ***And last but not least, what is this plan that has Minerva so excited and just what constitutes a suitable gargoyle?Thank you for this totally marvelous update!!!

Thank you again! Hee! Answers are coming. There's a clue to the secret allies' identity in By Order of the Phoenic - Part One. But you've probably read the chapter where they are described more fully by now ;o) I think Minerva would consider all gargoyles suitable for her favourite spell! Who knows, it could turn out to be her retirement hobby.
Response from braye27 (Reviewer)
Ah-ha! I panned the relavent chapter and think I spotted a clue or two. I'm all for retirement hobbies since I may be retiring myself in a couple of years.
What a wonderful chapter. So much going on and so much information relayed. It was wonderful that he had closure with Charity. That was a scene that always lingered for me. To have to watch a co-worker, possible friend die in such a manner and not react. Sheesh. Anyhoo, I ramble. Wonderful story. Wonderful chapter. Enough meatiness that will certainly require a re-read at some point.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Thank you! I had to give Severus closure on that one. He really deserved to have it. I can't imagine what it would take out of a person to watch a friend die and pretend it didn't matter, but that's what he had to do else he really would have been killed (slowly) - and too much depended on him working in secret to bring Voldemort down.
I hope they have Toby under tight guard.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
I hope so, too!
OMG! There is so much information in this chapter that I can't wrap my mind around it. I'll have to make an outline of it and couple that with what I remember from earlier chapters and try to figure out all of what has taken place. You're a great story teller, m'dear, and I am so enthralled with this particular tale!!!Beth
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Oh dear! I've driven you to making outlines? Oops, sorry about that! I'm happy to see that you're enthralled - does that mean I'm forgiven?
Response from braye27 (Reviewer)
Yes, ma'am. I may have a questions or two, but it's fun. 8^)
I can't help but wonder if what happened when Severus acknowledged Merlin's shrine had anything to do with the return of Sister Clarise's memories that caused her soul to ache. What will the light of that single candle show her? Can it be that the priory and the Crystal Cave be connected in some way? Can Sister Clarise be descended from the Prince family as well? The scene in Pripyat gave me chills. I think Arawn will rue the day that he ever conceived of his idea to use the Dementors as his tool for taking power. While Arawn may be able to command the half-eaten wizards, witches, and Muggles, I believe the time will come when he will be taken over by the thousands of Dementors who have created their own city in Pripyat. Be careful what you wish for.I'm glad that everything went so well for Tobias, and it gave the Grangers a chance to come to terms with Hermione and Severus relationship. Thanks for such an involved chapter, and now I'm off to read the next one.Beth
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi Beth! Yes, I remember being told to be careful what I wished for... because if one's wish is granted, one must also accept what comes with it. Scary thought! Have you had a look at the photos of Pripyat online? It's so sad, but also very spooky. Former residents who've been allowed back in (under escort and for a very short time) say they feel like something is watching them or following them ~shiver~. Toby has stuff to do, he does, so getting him properly patched up is a necessity ;o) Thanks for reading and reviewing!
Response from braye27 (Reviewer)
I have seen the photos of Pripyat, and it's such a sad sight. One of the professors at the university where I live travels there every so often with a group who are documenting the plant and animal life that live in the area. He said that the bird life seems to be doing surprisingly well considering what happened.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
I think that birds will be the ones to inherit the Earth... They are certainly in charge of my garden! I read an article about the unexpectedy vigorous regeneration of native flora and fauna around Pripyat (but they had a few instances of poaching for bear and wild boar). While I feel sad for the poeple who lost so much and now fear every medical appointment, I can't help being fascinated by the idea of what biodiversity can come up with once people leave it alone. I hope they really do make the area a kind of sanctuary/study site with appropriate protections.
More, more! :D Great job thus far, gracious author! :P
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
More is coming... Thanks for reading and reviweing!
I've only read the first chapter (I see it's not completed, and I like to pretend I can patiently space out the reading...) but I just had to say that I am so excited--I love Mary Stewart, and her Merlin books, especially!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi! It was Mary Stewart's description of Merlin that set everything off (actually, I was visiting my old friend The Crystal Cave and Severus kind of intruded on my mind and said "Sound. Familiar?"). Thanks for reading and reviewing :o)
Toby had every reason to "take it right down to the wire," as Robards says. He was a muggle facing two wizards; he couldn’t allow them even a split second's advantage. When the other side has all the power, there's no such thing as playing fair.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
He did indeed. Welcome to Street-Fighting 1001a!
I can't see that making an illegal portkey (or an illegal anything) "goes against all that's Gryffindor." The defining characteristic of Gryffindor is courage, not respect for legalities. Indeed, many of the Gryffs we see in canon are joyous and flamboyant law-breakers: the Marauders, the Twins, the Golden Trio. They differ from Slytherin law-breakers mainly in the fact that they get away with it far more often. Indeed, they're admired and rewarded for it.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi!! Actually, it wasn't the making of a slightly illegal Portkey that strayed from Gryffindor principles... It was the fact that Hermione was sharing the knowledge (and results) of her secret creation with a Slytherin instead of another Gryffindor. That said, I'm sure Severus will be an honourable wizard and not tell a soul ;o)
Things are coming to a head. Which is good and bad. Good because it progresses the story, bad because it means the story will come to an end.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
I guess if it had no end, it would not progress - and if it didn't progress, it wouldn't end (don't blame me for that - it was the portrait of The Philosopher who told me to put it here).
Response from Phyllidia (Reviewer)
(LOL)
I meant to mention in earlier reviews that I think the destroyed/missing chapters are know my House Elves a la "Fahrenheit 451".I love that Petrus is emulating Severus. That's funny.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hmm we'll see... Well, Severus does have lots of experience in keeping order :oP and on-the-job experience should be shared.
I am really enjoying Petrus. He's such a great character. Enjoyed finding more history. Good that you are showing bits of post-war trauma. Too many fics glaze over that. Great chapter. Thanks for sharing.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Petrus thanks you, and I thank you for reading and reviewing.
Whew. Glad things worked out and people are on the move. But there are LOTS of Dementors and other nasties. A little calm before the storm. Thanks for sharing!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
LOL! Good to see you can have a rest after the last two parts of the previous chapter. Thanks for reading and reviewing.
Oh my <scurries off to read the next chapter>
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
:o)
’er son were a prince--ooh could that mean he was the beginning of the Prince line??? HmmmmmmGood chappie. Glad to see progress between Severus and Toby.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
;o) Thank you!
That last part gave me shivers. Hmm, hope Malfoy is safe. Not that he's a good guy but he is trying to help and I'd hate for him to get soul-sucked in payment.Really enjoying.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Yeah, I think Lucius would prefer the 'benefits' kind of payment. Thanks for reading and reviewing.
Hmm I think I might have read some patterns in the planets as well. Let's read on to see if I'm right! (great chapter)
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
The signs are there for those who are observant enough to read them.
Good chapter. Thanks for sharing.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Thanks for reading :o)
I'm beginning to like Toby. I am not supposed to. Hmph. On to the next chappie.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Don't worry - it's fiction - you can like/dislike whoever you want ;o)
Those dastardly Dementors! And two Snapes at Hogwarts! Sounds like a Penny Dreadful. YAY!!!!!!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
LOL!
Ooooh. Caves and stuff and Legilimens. On to the next chapter. Who needs dinner anyways?
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
But dinner is very important...
Response from Phyllidia (Reviewer)
That's why the have take out....
Great chapter. Glad things are looking up for Petrus.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Thank you! Yes, he'd waited long enough.
So much good to munch on. Delving further into Dementor ecology is quite interesting.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Every creature has its habitat - somehow I can't see Sir David Attenborough presenting a series on the BWBC (British Wizarding Broadcasting Corporation).
Response from Phyllidia (Reviewer)
No I suspect a show like that would have been done by someone like Steve Irwin or the guy who does "River Monsters".
