Apart from it being an artefact of considerable antiquity, no one at the Department Of Mysteries could determine what it was. It was taken from the body of a slain Death Eater at the first fall of Voldemort and was, undeniably, of magical origin. Unable to extract its secrets, and unwilling to risk further experiments, the Unspeakables consigned it to the vaults. Or so they thought. Only one wizard may provide the answer, but he has no idea of his connection to it.

Reviews for A Place in the World
I've gotta tell you how great your story is! It's very entertaining and the way you weave history and geography into the mix is fabulous. Any story that makes me google people, places, or things will capture and hold my attention... and you've done that in spades! Well done.Beth

Thank you so much! I hope you had fun on your google-travels and found some interesting things. I must admit, I love historical and geographical 'anchor points' in fiction - seeing Notre-Dame de Paris for real almost had me in tears because I kept remembering Victor Hugo's story.

Well, isn't Papa Snape a pleasant surprise?! Or is Harry just completely inept? I suppose it's a little of both. While I'm still not sure what to make of everything happening here, I'm really enjoying every word. You've really taken a fresh detour from the usual here so you have me anxiously awaiting more. Please make it soon.

LOL! A pleasant surprise... hmm. Harry just fell into the trap of being a little too confident in his own abilities. I had a work colleague once who was very proficient in a martial arts discipline. He told me that even the most experienced fighter can be caught off-guard by a resourceful opponent if their mind is not right there in the moment - and the biggest imediment to presence of mind is an inflated ego. Big 'N.B.' for Mr Potter. Thank you for the review, next chapter is in the queue.

Ahhhh, Harry, you reckless Gryffindor! And props to Toby, for being so resourceful!

! Yes, recklessness leads to all sorts of unexpected trouble, a lesson Harry hasn't really picked up on, yet. I'm sure he will, though. Well, Toby is from t'North - they make 'em canny and tough up there ;o)

Wow. I'm impressed with how Tobias took on two wizards and came out ahead; looks like he is a Slytherin (cunning, resourceful, finds a way to survive) even though he is Muggle. Good traits to pass on to his son. Here's hoping that father and son work together, 'cos I don't like what Lucius just did - and what Lucius may have forgotten by Obliviation? Thanks for updating!

Hi June! It was a bit of a perfect storm, really. Harry was all recklessness and half-baked ideas, and Proudfoot was reluctant to rein him in because of who he is (you'll see that in the next chapter). Add to the mix a street-wise, opportunistic survivor with assorted fighting/brawling experience... Lucius wangled his way out of getting Obliviated - slippery devil! He's doing his best to guard Severus' back, but his resources are rather linited just now :oP Thank you for reviewng!
Response from June W (Reviewer)
As long as Lucius tries to guard Severus, I won't holler for his head!

I am enjoying this story very much. Your characterizations of Snape and Hermione are spot on (at least in my Wizard-World view). Looking forward to the next chapters.

Thanks Stella! I like the Wizard-World view - some would say a bit too much. Cheers and thank you for reading and reviewing.

I love how intricately and vividly you write, and the way this story is unfolding only draws me in deeper and deeper... I'm trying to keep myself from demanding that you update this (please, now, hurry!!) And will instead politely and (somewhat) patiently await the next update.

Loving this story! Your characterizations and use of historical/modern details are very well done indeed. Overall, the plot feels familiar, but entirely new and interesting. I look forward to reading more.

Splendid story - original and well-told. It is going down fantastically well in this household of a north-westerner and an Australian. My uncle used to take me to Salford Docks when I was a kid the same age as Severus and Lily (more-or-less literally - I was born in 1958) - I was enthralled. He remembered seeing day-labourers fighting with fists and clogs over dock work. How different it is now. Looking forward to the next chapter!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
I cannot tell you how chuffed I am that a genuine north-westerner can verify - for real - what I put together from remembered bits of film, documentary, and assorted written works. Thank you so much for the feedback and good health to your household!

I was touched by your brief reference to Toby Snape - it's always disturbed me to see him portrayed as nothing but a loutish brute. Your depiction seems far more telling - and I'd wonder whether Severus ever credited his father for the innate skill he has with his hands.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Thank you! I figured there would be a bit more to Toby, mainly because of Severus' childhood memory of crying in a corner while his parents argued. Because it upset him so deeply, I wondered if this was an indication that things had not always been so bad. If Severus does actually credit his dad with any positive influences, I think he's buried it pretty deep behind a Fort Knox of Occlumency.
Response from moiramountain (Reviewer)
I've no doubt he recognized Toby in himself - he's far too intelligent not to - and I wonder if, sitting there in Spinners End of a wintery night, if some of those child's memories did not visit far more often than he'd like. To love and despise a parent, all in the same breath - a very bitter realization to reach.
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi again! I didn't realise you'd answered my reply - I wasn't ignoring you. Your response put a lump in my throat. 'Spinner's End on a wintery night', every room with its own memories just waiting to be summoned in an unguarded moment. I can see Severus studiously ignoring them with a book and a Firewhisky. But every now and then...

Glad that Oriens and Petrus are watching things. Arawn or anyone who worked with Dementors is likely to be mentally unbalanced by the exposure to such dark creatures. No idea about the guy with the Clydesdales, but glad Severus is able to walk around. I hope he eats better than the rations Hermione has stored. Did Eileen ever tell Severus about her family's legacy with that that thingie? Thanks for the new chapter!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
They certainly are watching! Unfortunately, the Fudge Administration only considered the advantages of having Dementors drifting around the place. They never gave a thought to the disadvantages.LOL the rations aren't too bad, better than his childhood staples of porridge and bread and drippin'. As to how much he was told about the artifact, that shall be revealed as the chapters progress.

I'm so glad severus was able to hear Lily and James (and Sirius, second-hand) tell off Dumbledore. Thank you!

Thanks June, I suspect Severus needed some sort of closure - and Albus needed a good telling-off!

I've just read this from the beginning and find it utterly intriguing, with so many layers and so much detail. I read and adored Mary Stewart's books when I was a teenager, so am fascinated to know how the Arthurian legend is going to be woven in. From this chapter I was particularly impressed with how you used the 70's industrial decline and made that relevant to how Severus chose to live his life - something that had never even occurred to me. In summary, I love it and can't wait for more!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Hi
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
! Thank you for reading and reviewing. There was a real coincidence in Ms Stewart's books which prompted the whole story - I can't reveal what it is just yet, though. The industrial decline fit in with JKR's canon setting, and I can imagine that a child of a working class family would have felt the fallout in any number of ways. I get the impression that the people of the industrial north (in those days) were a hard, pragmatic people living hard lives. When the industries collapsed, they had next to nothing left except the dole and the feeling of being surplus to requirements - and it hit a whole section of society :o(
The Severe One... how appropriate.I think her dream is a wonderful concept. When she's heading towards a relationship with Ron and Severus is "past tense", things are unchanged and bleak. Well, Severus isn't past tense (unless he chooses to disappear) and (hopefully) she won't choose Ron in the end. Thanks for the update. I hate to say this, but I wish I hadn't found this story yet... I'm too intrigued to wait for updates. ;)
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
Indeed! One thing that struck me about the Epilogue was that Hermione did not seem to be herself. I read somewhere that JKR wanted to create a "dreamlike" feel to the Epilogue - and that's where the idea came from! Thanks for the Review, next chapter is being Modded :o)

Wow! Th imagery in this chapter -- and story -- are so vivid! I loved the glimpses into Snape's childhood, and the memory of Mr. Evans. It struck me as so very kind that he'd not only take his daughter to a place that traditionally shunned women, but also the sulky neighbor boy that was her best friend. I can only imagine how different Severus' life would have been had he had Mr. Evans as a father, or even just a consistent father figure. I can't wait for the next update!

True! The Minsitry has their hands full and are busy checking Portkey links into Europe.
Snape's at least somewhat grateful, how generous of him. I wonder how long it will last. Hehe, he'd know the plantlife wherever you'd drop him, wouldn't he? Good he wasn't transported to a place even further away, as that would have meant leaving the earth's atmoshpere. I enjoyed the start; now let the chapters come in!
Response from noodle (Author of A Place in the World)
LOL! He can be quite decent if he puts his mind to it. As to how long it will last... well, how long is a piece of string? There is one place further away and still within Earth's atmosphere, but I think Antarctica would have challenged even Hermione's capabilities ;o) Thanks for the R&R
Oh, my! I'm already hooked!! I really enjoyed the scene at the veil. Lovely!! The last line was wonderful! More, please. :D
