Oh, poor Pertus. He was an excellent servant, and the parallels to Dobby were incredible. Severus's preparations for him were touching. The scene in the bath... hm. YUM. But... why did everything go black??? Yikes!

Another great chaper. Although I have to admit the names of the guests startled me a bit - especially the women's. In ancient Rome women usually only had the female version of the 'gens' name, what would be the middle name in the name of a male Roman citizen. So a woman called Julia would belong in to the family of the Julii like the daughter of Gaius Julius Caesar. I know there were differences with freed slaves and their descendants, but males usually took the first and middle name of their former master and used their old name as cognomen (the third name). And while you've chosen Latin Roman names like 'Tullius', which isn't a first name by the way but Cicero's gens-name (Marcus Tullius Cicero), it would be more authentic if you had given each male a typical Latin first name (there are only a few) that can be found in any Latin dictionary.Sorry for the ranting, but although it has been quite some time that I did ancient Roman history and Latin at uni, the odd names caught my eye immediately. Fantastic chapter in every other way. Great story.

Hello there,
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
, and thanks for your review. Thanks also for the tips on women's names. Most of the men's names are real - from the ruins of the city, but I used poetic licence to choose their wives' names. Tullia was a deliberate choice in honour of Cicero (one of my favourite historical figures) -- glad you picked up that reference! Best wishes, :Px
Response from RawenclawBabe (Reviewer)
Well, your references are half the fun! And maybe it was a good idea to use Cicero's gens-nomen as a first name. If you had used it as gens-nomen, I would have simply assumed that he was a distant relative, but wouldn't have mentioned it. Cicero's and Caesar's time is fascinating, although they didn't get along, but if I'm completely honest I wouldn't fancy translating one of Cicero's speeches right now...
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Ho Ho - know what you mean, but the Second Philippic...! Thanks for your comments - you always keep me on my toes! :Px

I knew that man was slimy!! Glad Severus put him in his place. Now the earthquake - a precurser to the eruption. How terrifying. But if Snape helped to put the wards on the city, can't he take them off so they can escape? It could buy them more time to try and figure out a way back through the mosaic portrait.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
But might the earthquake spook Sabazios and make him want to leave, which will mean they'll miss the chance to bury him beneath the eruption? So they need to keep him supplied with the potion to soothe him and keep him there. Things are hotting up next chapter! Thank you so much for reviewing. Best wishes :Px

Oh my, what a nasty point to leave us hanging! How much time do they still have? The streets were narrow and crammed already without the panic. Her position as Severus' "niece" isn't protecting Hermione well enough. Its so easy to take advantage of her. Whatever Severus did to the Aedile, I hope it hurts!
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
It hurts, but it isn't enough. Fiducius will be back. He needs the potion, like a junkie needs a fix... and the consequences will be fatal. More to come -- next chapter's in the queue! Thank you for reviewing! Best wishes, :Px

Oh my. I forgot that they reclined at table in those days. Must have been an interesting experience. I felt badly for Hermione, getting pinned as she did. Part of me wonders if Severus "did" anything to the Aedile in the midst of the fracas...

Oh, man, cliffhangers will be the death of me! The chapter started out a little slow; maybe because it's been a bit since I read the preceeding chapters. I had a hard time keeping track of who was saying things, and didn't really care much for their political discussions. The Aedile is a disgusting pig. Can't wait for the next update! Great job!

Hi,

... Yes, I was worried about the political stuff being too much, but I'm glad you stuck with the chapter till the end. Don't think we've seen the last of the Aedile... Best wishes, Px

I was super-excited to see her make a connection! Kind of disappointed that Severus isn't "getting it." I'm curious as to what sort of gathering "tonight" will be... and I'm wondering if Severus will try to save anyone from Pompeii. I liked Hermione's idea to try and break the wards, but I'm pretty sure Severus has tried to do so more than once. Great update!

Oooh! Hi
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
- lovely to hear from you again! Yes... she is trying to put it together and Severus is being rather grumpy, but I she flummoxes him. He's also still dealing with the shock of having her here, particularly as he had resolved to sacrifice himself for the greater good etc etc. The next two chapters are in the queue and moving up quickly! I hope you enjoy the party ^.^ Best wishes, :Px

still more mysteries than answers, oooh the suspense! Why then did Severus call Hermione if he plans on dying there?? He's not being all that earnestly determined, is he? Is this Deity the only magical being besides them in Pompeii? Otherwise there would be other wizards suddenly trapped and wondering about it..Thanks also for the insight into magic transportation.. nice warnings; funny bureaucracy, and yes to travelling issues with small kids. Yet, I think there should not be escalators since Arthur was once asking what "escarpators" could possibly be.

Curious, curious. Although some things have become clearer (e.g. why they can't leave the town and who is keeping them there), the story still remains mysterious. Hermione has got her Iphone? She is running it on magic, isn't she? Because I can't imagine the battery lasting that long and it might be a little difficult to charge it in ancient Pompeii. Severus idea of destroying that deity using the volcano somehow reminds me of the Doctor Who episode 'The Fires of Pomeii', but alas the detonation of that particular volcano and the pyroclastic flows should be able to hide a multitude of sins or destroy many different monsters.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Hello! The mystery is slowly coming out - although there's a way to go yet.... The iPhone's going to play an important role later on. Yup; it's running in magic of a sort - Hermione didn't fancy the standard contract rates...! Thanks for your review, as always! :Px

I love this story. And yet again you have an evil cliffhanger. You realize you're implying that Severus is going to do something stupid, don't you? Why can't that man focus on properly being happy with Hermione. Oh, of course I love his heroic side too, but he needs to keep himself out of harms way more. This martyrdom thing is so not cool; especially when he has a brilliant young witch enamored with him.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)

Curse you for the quicker updates over on Ashwinder, where they don't have bookmarks and I hardly ever review! Loooove this story and I even feel like I'm learning something when each new chapter has some new ancient vocabulary word. ;)

Apologies! My first beta had to drop out and there was such a delay as a result here that I posted on Ash in the interim. I will get back into line between the sites and the story will definitely continue here as well. Really pleased that you are enjoying the tale and thank you very much for your review. So he encourages the bad guys knowing they'll all be blown to Kingdom come anyway. Was he hoping to contain them in Pompeii until V-day?
