I love you for bringing ancient Egypt, Pompei and Severus and Hermione together in one story. I can't even begin to guess what you are going to do but if you bring in the Goddess Ammut into the picture. There will be fangirl squeeing. LOTS.

...one hundred points to the House of your choice if you’ve worked out what is going on...
Oh, my aching brain! I don't know what's going on, but if I make a list maybe I'll gain enlightenment. LOL!=====
•Who built the original skeleton mosaic and why? I think Nasica built this as part of his personal shrine to seek the help of Isis and Thoth so he could acheive eternal life. There was a Temple of Isis in Pompeii, and it would be reasonable to assume that Nasica would be a member of the her cult. She was revered as a compassionate goddess who offered adherents eventual salvation and a relationship that lasted throughout life and even after death.
Thoth was seen as a god of wisdom and magic. He was responsible for writing, the measurement and regulation of events and of time, and played an important role in the judgment of the soul and whether someone who had died would be granted eternal life.
More than anything Nasica wanted eternal life, and was willing to do whatever it took to acheive it. He kept a huge snake and somehow learned to talk to it. When Marcus showed the house to Conviva and Restitutus, they found the remains of sacrificial animals, bones, and lots of blood. Everyone thought that Nasica had escaped the earlier earthquake and gone to Egypt. But I think he had already become Sabazios and left Pompeii.
•What is the meaning of the skeleton mosaic? We often think of the skeleton as an omen of death, but in the Thoth tarot deck it symbolizes change– that for every ending there may be a renewal and a new beginning. It could signal someone's physical death, but there are many kinds of "death." The scythe that is often pictured with the skeleton has been changed to a wand. Both of them are symbols of power, and I believe Nasica's interest in magic would have given him the notion to have wanted a wand instead.
•Why was the scrap of papyrus buried beneath the skeleton mosaic floor? The first thing that comes to mind is that Nasica wanted to have the Book of Thoth sealed in his shrine just like a Book of the Dead would have been written on the tomb walls or placed in the coffin of the deceased.
•What is the significance of the papyrus being from the Book of Thoth? This outlined a spell that determined whether or not the deceased's heart was pure enough to deserved to spend eternity with the gods. If he could "do everything just right," Isis would have compassion on him and Ma'at's feather would outweigh his heart. Thoth was the god who oversaw the judgment and recorded the result of the "weighing of the heart." =====
He thought of Dumbledore again. What now, old man?" he asked wryly. "Will love save me this time? As Hermione and Severus await their fate, I'm praying that love will save both of them.
Now that both of them know that the runes on the skeleton mosaic are similar to the ones around the mosaic of Severus that brought Hermione to him and to the runes around the portrait he'd had painted of her... and Harry has realized that the runes around the skeleton mosaic in the "painting" in the Headmaster's office are like the one's around the "painting " itself... well I hope like hell that they will all know what to do. I think that the blood in Severus' Horcrux has connected them to each other in mind and in spirit. I don't think it's because of Dark Magic but because she had loved him before the Shrieking Shack, and he has longed for her for the past eleven years in Pompeii. And I think that they can get back to their own place and time through the skeleton mosaic in Severus' bath.
I know that Hermione's mother has a snippet of her hair in the locket she always wears. I remember that some of Severus' blood entered the perfume phial cum Horcrux when Hermione went to shower after the Battle of Hogwarts. And although I am far from certain, I think that both of them are going to somehow have touch the skeleton mosaic at the same time and that their blood will figure into it.
Beyond these convoluted musings, I haven't a clue what is going on. But thank you for another thrilling chapter and lots to think about!!!

Dear Beth, first of all Happy Christmas! It's great to hear from you again! What an epic response --you've outdone yourself this time! I'm going to award you additional points for the thoughtfulness of your comments, regardless of their accuracy (I can't give away the answers just yet). I love your reviews... You give me as a fledgling writer just as much to think about as you say I give to you! Thank you once again for getting in touch. Next chapter is in production and should be up next week if Christmas doesn't get in the way too much!! Best wishes, Pxx (I will happily respond in more detail to the points you make once the cat is out of the bag in the next two chapters!!)

Well, I admit to a tiny feeling of relief that Sabazios and the Aedile have been dealt with, leaving just, you know, the volcano. I am glad they are alive and together at least. Biting my nails...
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
I feel so responsible for your nails. My grandmother used to glare balefully as me if I bit mine and say: "Don't stop until you get to your elbows." She was caring like that. And not at all terrifying. Mostly. Next chapter up soon, although Christmas stands between you and it, I'm afraid, so it may be a little longer than a week.... Will the nails survive???!!! Pxx

Gosh, I just don't know. So many mystical ideas floating around -- blood magic, the power of love, portals between universes ...and who gets to be the ferryman, anyway? As you see I am reduced to muttering aloud to myself over this one. So I'll just have to resume nail-biting until the next installment.

you're not making this easy for us or them! How about, - at Hogwarts they have to add Snape's blood--as they can only save both together? - S&H have to defend their case to Thoth, and call upon Harry to confirm it? If that's the case then I desperately hope that they do not need Ron. Do we enter Hades through a vulcano? - Justin will stumble over a mosaic of a sceleton?well, now there are so many options that itys hard to assign points even if one is close... but if you can spare some, then to Ravenclaw, please. Thanks again for this absolutely thrilling story!
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Ah-haaaaa.... Interesting ideas, very interesting... Love the idea of relying on Ron. I'm trying not to be a Ron badger in this, and he has actually given Harry an important clue in this chapter. Ravenclaw's getting plenty of recognition today...! Pxx

Alright, so it sounds as though they're both stuck in the Underworld - Thoth might have found it funny to use Pompeii as the testing grounds, as it seems? But Severus, would have been "mostly dead" to paraphrase Princess Bride movie - so Hermione just got dragged down with him, but how did she fall into the mosaic? Was there some kind of "gap" in his timeline that allowed her to fall through?

There's no way on earth I'm smart enough to work out what's going on. But I'm pretty sure it has to do with the skeleton. I'm just amazed that Hermione can even think clearly under this pressure - she's an amazing witch.
I'm enjoying this story immensely. Thank you!

. On a good day, when she hadn't been battling monsters, avoiding death by fiery volcano, dealing with drugged up psychos, saving her friends, and (generally speaking) having a very stressful visit to 1st century 'Pompeii', she'd have nailed it. Answers sooooon! Pxx

The mosaic tile floor should have the same capabilities as the portrait that Hermione came through. Harry noticed the change in the scene, which meant that either they could use their blood to pass through the portrait and retrieve Severus and Hermione, or Severus and Hermione could come to them through the floor. They just had to figure out how with the use of their blood. Now I can read the other reviews and see if I get any points for Ravenclaw (that's where Pottermore said I would end up after I took the test). If my answer is wrong, does that mean that Pottermore was wrong about me?You already know how much I love this story. I will be sad to see it end. I just hope the ending is happy.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Don't doubt Pottermore... That's like... shaking the foundations of reality.... *shudders in fear and alarm*. It put me in Ravenclaw too, even though I've never been able to do a cryptic crossword answer in my life and I hate Sudoku. But still, i belieeeeve. We'll see how accurate you are very soon, C! Thank you as always, for your review! Pxx

Oh, honey. I have my suspicions how this plays out, but my brain is too fried by pre-holiday preparations and performances to venture a coherent theory. I'm happily enjoying the ride, though, and look forward to your next installment. Thank you so much for posting!hm88

Hi heartmom! I don't want to fry your brains before Christmas -- and I'm not going to let on who is right and who might not be, until the story plays itself out! I am so pleased that you are still enjoying the mad tale. I'm hoping that the next one will be up next week (although Christmas may well get in the way of that ambition!!). Thank you for your review! I loved the tension built, Hermione's cleverness and fast thinking to convince Fiducius that the others must be included--loved how she remained behind:-) And her and Severus' dilemma, each taking into account the other and their lives, the poignancy of her by his side as they sit reclined and waiting for the inevitable is very moving... The sweetness of all of those back at Hogwarts contrasts the swelling dire situation of Hermione & Severus, mirrored in the portrait, as well as the Aurors being derailed continually- hehe! - lovely contrasts! (and no, I still haven't any idea what's going to happen and am waiting in *anticipation* ) Just wonderful dynamic work!xx

I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter, nag - I was trying to get the contrasts right between the different characters' scenes. Nearly there... nearly there...! Pxx

Ripping Yarn: n. 1. Colloquialism denoting an especially exciting or suspenseful story. 2. A fanfic called "Anima Mea" by Proulxes, replete with cliffies and designed to cause readers to be late to concerts because the latest chapter just won't wait.

Oh no! What a terrible cliffhanger. What was S thinking, releasing the wards, or was he just too exhausted to maintain them? Thanks for the comic relief via the aurors and the touching moment between Ron and Helen Granger. I'm happily (and anxiously) awaiting the next chappie!
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Hi snapify! Next one is written and on its way, promise! Releasing the wards could be because a) he's dying or dead and so the wards are breaking b)he is exhausted and knows that he needs a sneaky Slytherin plan to deal with Marcus and enable Hermione to escape with the Pompeiians... ;) I'm so glad you like the light relief -- I just feel the story needs it! THANK YOU so much for your review! Pxx
