Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Brilliant battle scene - tension and pathos perfectly balanced. As for Snape and Hermione, I think it might have to be Harry or Ron who does something to bring them together. Snape's been through a lot, but I still want to give him just the tiniest kick in the backside - Hermione's in shock and has no reason to think that he wants anything to do with her after he left her in the Shrieking Shack.

Meant to add - does Hermione know about Lily yet, or was that not in the pensieve memories in this parallel version?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I know what you mean about kicking Snape in the backside... I hope you'll understand more about where he was coming from as the story progresses. :)Hermione knows about Lily--it was in the Pensieve, and of course, she knew about the Patronus and all. Thank you so much for reading,

You did it. You made it right. You took what was a poorly written, unrealistic scene and turned it into a true battle.Unlike that Other Author, you acknowledged that even the innocent have to kill when backed into a corner and the lives of everyone they love are on the line. You wrote so vividly, I felt like I was there with them. I saw what they did and felt their pain.Love what you did with Luna's blue sparkle spell. I hope she set Greyback's fur on fire. I chortled with delight when Harry pointed out to Voldemort that he might not be right about owning the Death Stick. I suspect Tom Riddle was shot into the afterlife in a state of total surprise. Arsehole.I felt Hermione's heart breaking and her numbness after.Thank you, Madam Author. You have done your job and done it well. If you look closely at your computer monitor, you will see your fans offering you a standing ovation!

. This one was one of the hardest I've written, for a myriad of reasons, but mostly for the fact that ending a book with a battle is often so very anticlimactic. Not that it's the end of SL, but you know what I mean. I'm very glad that you felt the things that the characters experienced, and so glad you liked Luna's sparkles! And I'm glad you weren't disappointed that I had them use more...erm...deadly spells. I don't think it's dishonorable to fight for your life or for what's right.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!!

Oh Magnificent! No amount of superlatives could express my admiration and thanks for yet another well-written chapter. I also like that you 'blooded' your characters - seemed truer. From memory JKR did not write them using a truly harmful spell knowingly ie. Sectumsempra or an Unforgiveable (mainly AK), Plus the only real killing in Canon by the DA (apart from MouldyVort) was done by Neville using the sword (not magic) on an animal. I think by you having them fight as you did it stripped away the last vestiges of childhood innocence, which seems to be a normal phenomonem in times of war.Speaking of Nagini and swords - Yay! So so fitting the Hermione should do the deed. considering that if Nagini hadn't almost killed Snape she would not have had to use the Vita Secundus on him and they would not have fought. Re. Bellatrix. Interesting choice, but I have no doubt there is a reason why you didn't leave Molly to do it or brought Neville in after losing his shining moment to Hermione. I will be interested to see the next few chapters. if my assumption is correct. Now for the finale. He he! Oh and the 'OMG you (Hermione) and Snape moments...Ah so much to look forward toCheers.

Thank you so much, Reets! I'm so glad you liked it! And I'm very happy that you were pleased with my decision to "blood" my characters--I think there is a time and a place for manners, and in the middle of battle, when you life is on the line... when the lives of those you love are on the line.... well...(And I'm a Quaker!)I'm glad you felt I made the right choice with Hermione and Nagini. I did hate to take it from Neville--such a badass moment in DH--but that Snake bit her husband! And I have a feeling that if Neville had tried to do it, she'd have elbowed him out of the way! :)And yes, much left to look forward to! I'm so glad you're reading. Thanks!

You finished with the parallel canon bit, and very well done I must say! However, your next chapter had better not start "Nineteen years later..." That's all I've got to say about that! Hermione seems to be in shock ever since Severus left her in the shack. It's half-way surprising that she didn't get herself killed in that final fight. If Snape hadn't made her feel like she was (solely) responsible for Harry's life, because she used the potion that had been meant for him, I doubt she would have kept it together as long or as well as she did.Wonder where Severus is going... It's sad that he was so sure of his death that he never considered what he should do if he survived the war. Hope someone knocks some sense into him soon, I mean Minerva, Hermione, Dumbledore's portrait, and now Harry know what side he was really on: it's not like they'd let him get thrown into prision to rot with all the other Death Eaters (well, it's a toss-up with Albus since this wasn't according to his all-mighty-plan).Anxiously awaiting your next update! Seriously, if this were a printed book, it would be the kind that would get read all in one night because you just can't put it down!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, no, no! No "nineteen years later."How about, "Fifteen minutes later...." :)I agree that she was in shock AND that she is lucky that she didn't get herself killed. I'm so glad you liked it--thank you! And you will soon know more about Snape and his fate. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! That little smiley who waggles his finger is very threatening! :)

Oh how I have looked forward to, and dreaded, this chapter! There is no doubt that you did a marvellous job as usual, no matter who died, you wrote a magnificient chapter as usual. I will be the first to admit that I had hoped that you would "save" more than Severus, that maybe Fred, Remus and Tonks would have survived, one, two or all three of them. But, I also find that even though they will alwyas be placed on top of my list over people who should have survived, I find it more acceptable in your story than in JKR's. Not only because you let the most important one, Severus, survive, but because you didn't treat their deaths as casual and unimportant as I felt JKR did. I must also say that "your" final battle was much more impressive than the one in DH. The way you had all of them going to the forrest to make sure that Voldidork would not have an easy victory, was worthy of those who have spent a lifetime figthing him! I loved how you made Ron finally grow up and show him self as a real warrior; when Hermione told him Harry was a Horcrux, how instead of immature, rash and ranting behaviour, Ron stod as a man and a friend, set on not letting his friends sacrifice be for naugth, wanting to show Harry that no matter what, they would continue the figth. I loved how you let Hermione, Ginny and Luna take down the likes of Greyback and Dolohov, I loved that you let Hermione, Harrys "mudblood" friend, and Severus wife, kill Nagini, Voldidorks pet and the snake who killed her husband. That was poetic justice!!! Now I will look forward for the aftermath, secure in my knowlegde that you can almost write anything you like and it will still be thousands times better and more dignified than that badly written epilogue "19 years after". I look forward for you reuniting our beloved Hermione and Severus, though I am still a bit mad at Severus for hurting Hermione as he did in the Shrieking Shack, and I am pretty sure that it won't be in the next two or three chapters:-) As the rest of your story have given us the pieces JKR forgot to write in DH, I hope you will give us the aftermath worthy of the rest of the story! You can't imagine how much I look forward for you next update:-)))

, you don't know how much I wanted to save them. For me, the loss of Fred Weasley was a nearly crushing blow--I can't say exactly why except that it has something to do with his being a twin. I think JKR thought it made him more expendable, in a "Hey, we've still got George!" kind of way... but thinking about George alone rips my heart out. If I could have saved them, I would have. Please believe me. Unfortunately, I felt I was allotted only one miraculous save--that somehow, the war loses weight if no one we love is taken, and so I tried to take them honorably.I'm glad you trust me as we head out into part three of SL. I will do my very best.Thank you for reading, from the bottom of my heart. xoxox

I love how Snape's first thought was to show Hermione that his Dark Mark had disappeared. To me it doesn't just symbolize that he still cares for Hermione, but also that he finally feels free from a life he had come to regret so much. I'm so glad that I held onto my faith. I knew all along you'd let Snape live, I just knew it.I can't wait to see more, to see the parts that have no boundaries, that will probably even be even more brilliant than the rest of this story, if that is even possible :)

'The last of DH', you say. So that may mean there's more to come from YOU (and the story is still marked as a work in progress, thankfully). Pls let us know what happens next. But take your time after this breathtaking chapter. It's not the kind of thing one can write every day. Thank you.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
The last of DH, yes. But definitely not the last of SL. My husband and I sat down (after about a pint of tears on my part) and reviewed the outline for the end of the story, and where I originally said five more chapters, I think realistically looks closer to ten. But either way, there's more to come. Thank you, especially, for the breathing room. This one took a lot out of me, emotionally.thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

"The Last of DH", but NOT the last of your story, I trust? I am SO looking forward, now, to some sunlight of hope to burn through the thick smothering mists of angst, and to move on to the "Epilogue? What Epilogue?" portion of your tale.Bravo!

Wow. That was incredible. There was the climax that was missing in DH and it was wonderful to read and experience (well, via imagination of course :) ) . I'm heartbroken for Snape. Where did he go? What is he doing? There is obviously feeling left there - and more than just betrayal - as his first thought was to rush to Hermione and 'show her'. I feel like these last two chapters we have gotten to see the full potential of your story-telling ability. No longer bound by DH, or at least to a lesser extent, your talent is really shining brightly. Thank you for this wonderful story and the thrill of the ride. :)

Wonderfully written. And I'm glad Hermione got the chance to deal with Nagini - it was fitting, after what Nagini did to Severus.I just hope, for the sake of both of them, that it will not take forever for them to find each other again.

Well there's a fine kettle of fish. Now that everyone (our heroes at least) gets the victory they have been working so hard for -- their lives are so shattered (our lovers at least) that it does not look like there is much hope of working it all out. But I trust that whatever happens next you will once again provide in a highly entertaining manner as you have done all along with this story. Thanks for sharing, JoAnne
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, JoAnne, for your trust. Yes, things are bleak, as I felt they were in DH. Honestly, it was so wrenching for me to read the book and leap forward from the destruction of the war to a happy ending, when we'd left our heroes in such pain. I hope you enjoy the next section! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

... Lupin, who had had no chance to imagine a world in which he might not be hated, but who had fought for one, all the same.Snape felt the curse whip through him as well, and the sensation was oddly akin to pain, although perhaps it was more accurately the shock of pain ending, the lifting of a pain so familiar that he had begun to mistake it for the feeling of being alive.I loved these passages, because they are some of the best examples of what makes you such an excellent writer: you find the bare essence of a character and his experiences, and give it to your reader in such a sublimely powerful and concise package. This story has never just been a love story or an adventure--it has been an existential journey.

*stands up, cheering and whistling loudly*That was FANTASTIC! I like how you finally turned away from a retelling of canon and made things turn out just slightly differently. It was amazing. I have goosebumps! Now - to sort out our married lovers - how many more chapters do you expect there will be?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You know, there were supposed to be 5 more. But realistically, I think there will be somewhere between 5 and 10--no more than that, I don't think, but that's what the current outline is showing. I'm so glad you liked the end of DH! I'm so glad! Thank you so much. :)

Though you know I'm not a DH-basher, this is a much, much, much, much more satisfactory Final Battle. Ooooh, what's next????Cheers! Wonderful, wonderful. Gah, isn't school out yet where you live? Lariope,Very powerful chapter. LB72 is right ... you've made what would often be written as a triumphant chapter harrowing, painful and complex. But I would think that it's more true to life (though I personally do not have battle experience). These people have had a painful and exhausting night physically and emotionally; they have ricocheted from loss to win to realization of loss. How could they be anything but exhausted, confused, dazed, numb and so on? And, many of them, the trio especially, have focused their lives around the war, although not quite to the extent that Severus has. No wonder Hermione feels empty. I too, liked the line "Victory was not sweet, but thick and tangy as blood, sharp as a sword". Sums it all up beautifully. Hermione's reaction to Mr Weasley's face is a profound comment on grief. And you conveyed her numbness through the chapter very well -- I felt it. Liked Severus' POV for the battle.I do hope that S&H find each other again.RedRoo

Dear RedRoo, (my birthday twin)Thank you. To me, even in DH, the last battle was a very bittersweet thing, and very harrowing thing. I'm glad that came through here. And yes, for everyone, most especially Snape, it must be hard to envision how life goes on from here. Besides the grief and the pain, how strange to live in a house again, to go out for food, to see people.I'm glad you could feel Hermione. Thank you so much. And yes, we'll see more of our couple in the coming chapters. LoveLariope
