Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
I am so excited to read the update! Snape is acting a fright. Hermione on the other hand impressed me just as she has throughout the entire story. I re-read the earlier chapters recently and it is just amazing how she progressed from mature student to a woman in such a short period of time, and thankfully so, since Severus is playing the mute. :/ Real! Severus, where are you?! I am anxiously awaiting the next chapter!

I agree that Snape is dreadful right now, though honestly, I have a hard time blaming him. The world must look pretty bleak. I think the war ages people, and that Snape has aged Hermione significantly also--the person that she trusts most and confides in is not a 17 year old boy anymore. But I'm glad you like seeing woman!Hermione, as I like writing her. Real Snape will hopefully emerge soon. Thank you for reviewing!

OMG, this is wonderful. I am crying tears of joy. Arthur Weasley must be the wisest wizard on Earth. Thanks for giving me both sadness and happiness in the same chapter.

KyriaofDelphi! *hugs you very tightly* I'm so glad that you found this chapter moving, particularly Arthur Weasley, whom I obviously flat-out adore. This made me so happy. Thank you!

Very much better than the original. This I could have lived with . It beats the pants off DH. Thanks for making it all better.

I admit it. I am a coward. I held off reading this chapter because I simply could not bear to read those words again. But after enough mead the liquid courage got me through it. The chapter was wonderful. It was just so simply perfect the way her reactions were written and his reaction was so truly in character that you should have written DH. Thanks for making him live again.

I understand your fears. It's an extremely difficult scene no matter which way it goes, and I admit to crying as I wrote it. Thank you so much for sticking with me,

Lariope,Sorry to have not reviewed for the last few chapters. I was without internet for 10 days mid July and since then have been swamped with RL. Thus I haven't been able to read or review much at all.Rest assured though, that I still think you're doing a wonderful job with SL. These last chapters have been so painful to read -- but they are very realistic. As nice as reading fics in which everything is hunky dory once Voldemort is dead -- Severus is cleared and the sun shines -- that's not really consistent with what's come before. Severus has to come to terms with his past, his present (being alive), and the possibilty of a future. And the wizarding world needs to know the truth -- but it's a subtle truth that's hard to convey and that topples Dumbledore off the pedestal. Public opinion is a chancy thing and manuevering must be done. I totally see Kingsley's POV -- though I'm glad he believed in Hermione and Severus right after the pensieve (and that nothing had happend to those memories).I just want to shake Severus (and Hermione too). They need each other so badly and they are estranged and doing nothing about it. But it's easy to say that Severus should pull up his socks and get on with things, but he has no hope at all, does he? Expecting to die, he can't really live. Are there wizarding antidepressants? Seems like he could use some. But perhaps things are looking up, thanks to Hermione in this last scene. Anyway, great work! I hope your own RL calms down.Red Roo
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear RedRoo,Believe me, I understand all about RL, and I hope yours calms down some too! I have at least one more week before any kind of respite is in sight. To be honest, I'm pretty sure the new chapter will be at least two days late, and I can't believe it's taken me so long to respond to reviews. I'm very sorry. But I'm really glad I haven't driven you away from the story. Hurrah!Wizarding antidepressants! I love that. Yes, this is a bleak section of the story for both of them. They are both allowing themselves not to feel anything for fear of the things they would feel if they did, I think, though they manifest that in different ways. But I think Hermione knows Severus well now, and I think she is biding her time and taking her inches slowly. She is a tough girl, and I admire her very much. In some ways, I think I see her as even tougher than he is. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! LoveLariope

I'm not sure what to make of Severus here. I don't know whether to feel sorry for him or to be terribly angry with him. It's good to see Hermione having a bit more control over things again. I'm glad that Kingsley understands what is going on. Is the trial during the next chapter? This... waiting is uncomfortable. I imagine it must feel almost unbearable to Severus and Hermione, which is probably the emotional effect you were going for here.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
The waiting is uncomfortable, and I sense your growing impatience with this. :) It's ok, I understand and I agree in some ways. But yes, the trial is next.I understand your conflict about Severus too, and it reminds me of something I often tell myself as I cut people way too much slack: just because I understand why you're doing what you're doing doesn't mean that it's ok. We'll be moving along quickly now, I promise. Thank you for reading!

Female DEs. Thank you for bring up the topic. Its strangely sexist that only the guys are routinely mentioned outside of Bella. There would have to be more than just woman. Her room? HER ROOM? They are married and he cannot even unbend enough to sleep aside one another? I realize Snape is depressed or maybe I need a word that means much more than depressed, without hope? I wish he could spark just a tad bit of faith or hope. Has he never heard of the Barenaked Ladies? "kick at the dark until it bleeds day light" Thank goodness for Minerva. Thank goodness for Hermione doing her public appearences. Hermione is far more patient that I am. I could never sit for days and days and allow Severus to wallow. Clearly he needs her, he cannot relax enough to sleep without her. Tell me the next chapter is the trial?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
First off, I hope you're having a splendid time at Terminus!Second, yes, the trial begins in the next chapter. :)Yes, he is dreadful putting her in her own room, and we all know, and he knows, I think, that he is just being childish and petulant. And I agree that Hermione's patience is formidable, but honestly, I think you would need the patience of a saint to be married to Snape on the best of days. I love the man, but jeez.

It is up to her to make all the motions right now, but I rather think she understands why he is so... catatonic. I think she knows that her own time will come, and as long as she can believe that, she can survive this dark period. I wish more couples would believe the same thing. There would be less divorce.

, your review meant a LOT to me. Thank you. I agree with you. Marriage is an endless wheel, and you aren't always in the same place in the circle at the same time. I agree with everyone that Severus is behaving abominably, but I do think it can be worked out and that it's worth working out.And I'm glad you think Hermione understands what's going on. I agree. I think she knows him very well and that she had learned that the way to fight Severus is with patience and a complete refusal to be thrown of course by his senseless baiting!Thank you so much for this. xoxox

Kingsley was as flabbergasted as I could wish - good show, that. I also liked the way he finally got Hermione to understand what needed to be done in the end. Spin control.I appreciated the moments with McGonnagal and especially Hermione's dressing down of the Headmasters Black and Dumbledore. They both needed to be put in their place and she did it with style.Oh, and did I mention - Go Harry! Eventhough we don't see him physically in this chapter, his presence as a positive force is definitely felt. The most moving part for me was the portrayal of Severus' absolute refusal to live, his attempts to put himself in stasis as it were, until the trial. His attempts to pretend that Hermione didn't exist, eventhough his whole existance revolved around her goings and comings. Especially the comings, which he always seemed to doubt. I loved Hermione's steadfast refusal to give in to his wish for oblivion, the purposeful things that she did to make him aware that she wasn't going to give up or give in. Her finally going and joining him in bed made me smile.Thank you again for such a thoughtful update. Happy writing! Sorry if you get this twice, but I think the site ate the first posting!

Thank you so much, Aeron! What a wonderful review. You've really brightened my day!I'm so happy that you mentioned Harry, who I think is still working valiantly behind the scenes. Putting himself in stasis is an excellent way of putting that. I'm going to keep that in mind. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

Poor Severus - it's almost as if he's given up. Hermione's really strong to carry on despite Severus' ... depression? hopelessness? And I'm glad that Hermione is gathering allies for Severus' case. I really liked how you ended this chapter - hopefully that should let Severus know that Hermione still has hope in him and in them.Nicely done, and worth the wait!

Such love and devotion she shows him. She could have walked away. Surely he can see that. But the possibility of Azkaban looms large in the distance, and he's afraid to let her invest any more emotion in him than she has to, because he knows how much it will hurt her to lose him. This is such a beautifully written story. Maybe I'm just an old sap, but I love it. I can hardly wait to see how it turns out.
Well, it still seems to me they are still barely hanging in there. At least they are in the same bed. He seems to be hanging on her words and her keeping her word is what keeps him going. He doesn't believe in himself or anything, but he believes in her and her ability to be his strength. I am glad he slept so well :)Looking forward to happier times for our couple. They so deserve it!Livvy

Beautifully depicted. He resents her and loves her in the same breath. He resents life and wishes to embrace it with every flick of his eyes. He is a man in turmoil and he is afraid to trust. Afraid to love. Yet, the ending says it all... as their brething meshes into one sleep visits for the first time in a week. "That night, he slept like the dead." What you leave us to imagine is why? Is it because he has finally found peace? I think it is. At least, his subconscious has found peace in the love that will always be his. Now he must learn to trust. Beautiful, my dear. Irish

Riveting and almost unbearable at the same time -- how can that be? You ache for both of them. Poor Hermione, fighting on but burdened with knowing that whatever the outcome, there's no guarantee of a real life with Severus. Poor Severus, trying his best to be the dead man he was counting on being. Heck, even poor Kingsley, trying to get this mess to come out in some sort of justice. At least Hermione has some allies again; she's certainly going to need them!

Thank you, Merlin, for making Kingsley Shacklebolt comprehend what has happened. Likewise, for Minerva and all the others who have some understanding of what has transpired.Thank you, Lariope, for letting Severus and Hermione begin to find each other again at some level.I feel ever so much more hopeful, now.

I know it hurts, but he is behaving so badly. Poor Severus, and Hermione has so much strength, but you know, I want to set Dumbledore's portrait on fire.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree--in some ways he is like a petulant child, in other ways like a robot. Both things are totally unconcerned about how their behavior affects others. Yes, let's burn the portrait. I am absolutely for that. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

Argh! Poor Hermione! She is in over her head, and nothing goes like she hopes, and she still didn't shower! And Severus... makes me want to cry. I don't like Kingsley here, and I simply loathe Skeeter and Black, not to mention Dumbledore, that seems to me is in no rush to help Severus and Hermione. Again, your writing is wonderful, amazing, and so, so intriguiding. Can't wait to the next chapter!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Wait! Wait! Yes, she did! She definitely showered before she saw Minerva! :) I'm glad you don't like Kingsley here, because I like that people have such different perspectives on what he's doing--which I think is true of most politicians. Thank you so much for your lovely review,

Gaaahhh!!! I hate that Skeeter woman! She is worse than a dozen Dark Lords! I still believe in Hermione though, the girl can do it, I have total faith in her. Hopefully Sev will soon come to realise how formidable she is. She just needs to catch her breath and get into her stride, then heaven help anyone in her way.
