Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Wonderful, moving chapter. Very deep insight in Snape's despair. Enjoyed that one a lot, dear!

I'm so glad. Thank you, Chivalric. That means the world to me!

I actually like that Hermione is getting a chance to speak to Kingsley herself since taking Harry just seemed to muck things up. I'm hoping it will give her the opportunity to say all she needs to say without interruption and without being side-tracked - although I won't hold my breath that Kingsley won't just lock her up right next to Snape. :)

I think now that she's prepared to tell the whole story, things might go a bit better! His and Hers cells in Azkaban? heheehThank you so much for reviewing!

Oh my gods! I want to read the next chapter, but I can't cause everyone wants to go to dinner... oh... oh... I'd have to say this is the first moment that I've regretted being at Portus!!!!!!!

Let me pause for a moment to say how great it was to meet you, and how hilarious I found the whole no-cell-phone thing. I can't believe you were reading SL at Portus!! *squees*

I was taking a quick look at what some of the other readers had commented on and one thing that Sarabi said made me wonder; with all the pain that Hermione has suffered [and mostly not expressed], how is she going to eventually react when she finds out the Snape isn't dead, that he didn't let her know right away, that he let her move on without him, that he apparently has gone somewhere and not taken her with him ... This could be very dangerous waters for them still.I don't suppose we can put the tissues away just yet!

--I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. I think that Hermione and Severus are still in rather murky waters--when he left her in the Shack, she didn't know (or at least conciously know) where he went, and so yes, there is that element of disconnect between them right now, which is so hard to write given all they've been through. So, yes, keep the tissues on hand for the next 8 chapters or so... but we're on the way somewhere, and I hope you'll stick with me. xoxox

This is the first time since the very beginning when they were both getting married to do their duty that they have been so far apart emotionally. They are both completely empty without the other, and this is the time when they will need each other the most. I do hope you find a brilliant way to fix this little problem!

, you're absolutely right--and honestly, I completely freaked out over writing it. For me, the grounding force of SL is this feeling between them that you just cannot shake, that gives them strength to be brave. And to crack that, even just for a little while, is very painful to me.But trust, my dear. :)

While the victory of the Light over the Dark at this final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort should elicit feelings of great joy, I am left feeling "what next?"He scanned the crowd for Hermione, but he did not see her. She had proceeded into this new world without him, gone where he could not go. It was her future now, and he tried to be grateful for that, but found that he could not. Victory stung differently than defeat, but they both carried with them the promise of worlds in which he could take no part, and as the stragglers reconvened to make their plans, he spun away to the only place left that would receive him. My heart is still broken for Severus because he cannot see his way back to Hermione, and she has no idea where he is, or if he is....... she really has been left "open-ended," with no clear path before her.I teared up when you described Severus' first impulse upon realizing that the Dark Mark on his arm had disappeared. It was gone. It was gone at last. For a moment, he badly wished that he could run into the clearing and show her, that he could feel her small, soft hands running over skin that would never burn again, would never call him to witness or perform unspeakable things. Please fix this... I need for you to fix this.My God, Lariope! What a wonderful writer you are!Ever your faithful servant,Beth

Great chapter - I cannot wait to see what happens with Severus - he sounded like he was resigned to her moving on without him - I wonder if he will just leave and she will have to find him?
Cannot wait for more.

I'm sorry that the posting (and responding!) schedule has been so messed up lately! Portus kind of subsumed everything there for a bit. I hope to have the next chapter up for Tuesday and then be back on track. I'm glad you're looking forward to it and wondering... soon you'll know! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

I have been immersed in your stark, fierce world for the past few days, reading as much as I could, as I couldn't get enough. When I wasn't able to read, I wished I was. Your sheer genius boggles my mind, and I want to genuflect at your feet in gratitude for this exquisitely crafted, immensely powerful story of what it means to be unbreakable, to fight, to despair, to hope, to love. The meticulous way your story fits within the framework of the last two books is pure brilliance, and I found myself wrenching my mind out of the story at times to regard it (and you) in awe, appreciating your devotion to canon and detail while managing to build a haunting, painfully REAL connection between SS and HG. I want to take this story and shove it in JKR's face and tell her, "THIS. This is what you refused to see. You as much as robbed us of this. Thank all the gods that be that Lariope gave us what you either couldn't or wouldn't in your narrow, biased portrayal of Severus Snape--the deepest, most engaging character of your world, whether you meant him to be or not." I have posted this in my LJ and all but challenge anyone who sees the post with this: If you have not read this fic yet, even if you're not a SS/HG shipper, you should. The magnitude of this masterpiece cannot be overstated. It is complete, and if you manage to get through it without shedding a tear, you have no soul.Thank you for sharing this magnificent, soul-changing story with us. Thank you.

The screen for a review response is more daunting to me than any other empty page, because I always come to it so moved, and so humbled. You and I met at Snapefest years ago; I sat next to you at dinner, and I remember being so in awe of you. I listened to you talk about fic, about what you were working on, and the ideas you had, and I wondered if I would ever be capable of living up to the standards of the authors around me. I was about 2/3 of the way through Second Life that night. That you could read the story I was writing then and be moved by it is more than I could have ever hoped for. Thank you for this, and for bringing me such joy in the middle of a Tuesday. xoxoxo
Response from Good_Witch (Reviewer)
Then we'll just have to agree to be in awe of each other and form a mutual admiration society. ;) I remember that dinner at Snapefest, and I've been looking forward to reading Second Life since then. It was more than worth the wait. I'm glad to have brightened your day. You deserve it for brightening the fandom, darlin! *hugs*
OMG for a moment I really believed he was dead for good. But I remembered what you said to me :"Have faith". So I'll keep this in mind and won't hope that he forgives her because it WILL happen.

My God, Lariope! I read this chapter more than a week ago, and have just gotten to the point where I can post a review. I was so heart broken with Severus' sense of betrayal and Hermione's hurt bewilderment that I could not organize my thoughts enough... no, I couldn't write a review because it was just too damn painful. It is the mark of a good writer, you see, to have your readers so invested in your tale as to stop them in their tracks. Powerful writing -- you break our hearts and yet we come back for more. The panic you described in Hermione's flight to the Shrieking Shack was palpable. I could feel her fear and frustration at every hindrance. I understood perfectly when she cast the Sectumsempra at Lucius Malfoy. I understood why she refused to stop for anything or anyone as she sped through the castle. I understood. And I understood why Severus felt betrayed. I understood that his only hope for any kind of happiness lay in the hope of being able to be with Hermione on the other side, whether it was when she died in this battle or died of old age. Everything, every hope he had rested with being with her after his death had earned his salvation. And I understood. You made me cry again. I'm crying now. Damn you. Your writing is simply amazing. Such a gift.Beth
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Beth, nothing could make me happier than this, because the way you described it... I know that you do understand, perfectly, what I was trying to say. Words can't always do that, and I'm always so grateful when they do. Stephen King once described writing as telepathy--the passing of a mental image across time and space, and I'm so happy to know mine was recieved. Thank you for the incredible gift of that. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. It means the world to me. More soon. xoxox

Thank you so much! I'm going to hijack your review space to announce that because of Portus, there will be no Tuesday update until I return. 41 is in progress, but as I have no laptop, I can't compose while I'm in Dallas. I can't wait to see those of you who are going, and for everyone who is reading SL but not attending, I promise to update as soon as possible. Love, love, love, Lariope

Oh my goodness, this might easily be the best first chapter I've EVER read. So canon-y, yet so much promise of twists to come...I LOVE IT!!! yes, the capslock was entirely necessary. I'm just passing through because of the NLA readings, but I'm definitely coming back after voting's over, because this is excellent and I MUST find out what happens. I am already on the edge of my seat, and if this is just the first chapter...*spazzes out* Oh, and your Snape is fantastic; I love the way you've written him, and his and Dumbledore's dialog... This killed me: “And how do you intend to woo her on my behalf?” he sneered. “Miss Granger, happy birthday! How lovely to see you. Professor Snape here is going to kill me. Do marry him and prove he was for the Order all along, won’t you?” LOL!! Yay for dark, sarcastic humor. There were too many things that I loved to mention individually...but I'll be back! *bookmarks story*

I think you could have written twenty pages of story and I would still want more!! You are truely a wonderful writer! I absolutly LOVE this story!!!!!Poor Hermione is so lost in this chapter, she is like a walking ghost. Her heart can not take any more pain so please make it a little easier on her. Scared that she may lose it all if this keeps up. She needs him more than ever just to help her come back to her sences.I loved how you added what Snape was feeling as he watched. It really showed how much he truely cares for Hermione. EX. him want to run to her and show her his arm, to feel her hand on the spot!!What do you have in store for them in that very brilliant mind of yours? How long will it take for Severus to realize that he can not live without her?? Can not wait for more.HUGS for the most excellent story!!!!!

Coming out of lurkdom for a bit of fresh air and to further profess my love of you and your story I don't even know where to start! The emotions and imagery of the last two chapters were...incredibly powerful. My heart broke several times between 39 and 40 and I fear only more angst is ahead! My poor heart will be in tatters, I just know it! I'll have to tough it out I suppose, ha!Now the healing process begins...will the woe of aftermath exceed the pain of war? I'm really looking forward to how you're going to portray the result of it all, instead of magically (or conveniently) skipping 19 years into the future. I can't help but wonder what will be in store for our Severus. I don't blame him for feeling completely lost, the future must look so bleak and foreign to him. It's been years since the world has been without the threat of Voldemort, and I don't think he quite knows what to do with himself...He's been in 'spy-mode' his whole life, I fear he doesn't exactly comprehend how to turn it off either! However, I do hope he doesn't push Hermione away and realizes what a blessing she is to him. Gah, my heart is breaking all over again just thinking about it! I trust you will do everyone and everything justice, m'lady. And here we depart from the (somewhat) dreadful Book 7 and journey into Lariope-Land! A place of superb, magical fiction, no doubt! What an exciting ride it will be :) I just hope the wait in line isn't too killer... P.S. For some reason, I think it's really neat you share your writing process with your husband. I wish I had someone to share my obession with as well!

,Your review completely made my day. I'm so glad you've liked the final battle chapters, but even gladder that you're looking forward to the future of the story, as I am. Lariope-land, indeed! (as our dear professor would say). :)I'm sorry for the slight wait before part III, but I will be attending Portus and meeting all the amazing authors and readers our little corner of the fandom holds. I was really glad to get to finish DH before I left. I am really lucky to get to share this with my husband. Seriously, I don't think it would be possible without someone so patient. Thank you for everything!! Hugs!Lariope

I chose not to burden you with 48 more reviews, but wanted to let you know that I finished this wonderful story for the third time. How fitting that this time I finish on Independence Day.
What a fantastic breath-taking chapter. I liked that they were all present in the clearing and the fight of the order after Harry's resurrection.
Hermione's reactions to all that happens around her were very palpable, and I feel so sorry for Severus. I hope he finds a way back to life and to Hermione.

Thank you SO much, Dreamy Dragon! I'm so glad that you liked it--and glad you liked my choice to have everyone present. This battle belonged to all of them, and I wanted them to be able to take part. Thank you for such a beautiful; review, and I hope I'm able to fufill your wishes! xoxox

Walking is nothing but controlled falling, her mind offered nonsensically. Where had she read that? What a great way to describe her mental state. Her poor mind/heart can't take any more shocks to the system, so she goes into this mode of having tiny, irrelevant thoughts, just to get by without dying. So great, Lariope.Wow. I'm a bit breathless and wet-faced sitting here just absorbing this last chapter. Sorry about the lateness of review--my computer died again and I finally have a new one now, so it's going to be better from here out. :DI like that the final confrontation had everyone there. It made it less of an All. About. Harry. Thing. And that Hermione got to kill Nagini--sweet revenge. I'm really feeling pain for Severus though....now that Voldy's dead why can't he let himself be happy and take a chance that his life will turn out for the good, with Hermione by his side? Makes me want to cry....but I know you are going to fix things up nice and tasty for us, so no worries. :P

omg... Snape, you bloody FOOL, you better not leave her!! So, you say that is it for DH? I certainly hope that means that you won't be paying any mind to that ridiculous excuse for an epilogue! She's still married to Severus right? Or did it end when he died the first time??? Oi!! Oh man.... I can hardly stand it!!!!!!! Excellent excellent excellent!!! <---The Order... hee hee!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!! Okay, the only good thing about the end of this chapter is that there's already an update there so I can see what happens! EEEKKK!!! Seriously though, I have been away for 2 weeks and was only able to check my email once... and I saw that the story had been updated... and I Couldn't Read It!!!!! It has been taunting me till now and then .... oh the agony!!!!! I was so worried something like this was going to happen. Oh nOES!!! I have to say, however, that your description of the battle from her view point was incredible! So descriptive!! Perfect, really. And believable!! Oh man. Okay okay, I have to go read the next chapter!!!!....

Aha! the potion would never have worked after the "Avada kevavra" - curse. So what does he pout for?*kickintheback*someday he will learn that he is not for ever meant to atone. no, not even him. Even if he would have to end up in Ascaban, this coward. He has someone who loves him, and this nobody can take away from him. so he shall be sodding quiet.I feel so sorry for Hermione. She can't let go of Harry, even now that it's done. I wished for her to be able to breath at last. but no. She feels even more responsible, if that is possible. And she is the one who knows that her husband is still alive, but it doesn't help her. because he is further out of reach than ever. And she doesn't know what do do with /or without him, or even how to get to him. besides, he has to find his way to HER. Period.Quite a dead point for her, I would say.But hey, the war is won. And that counts, I dare say not just a little.lets see how you solve all theses tragic problems.salva

I think for those of us writing epics, the approach of the final battle is one of the most daunting things. I dreaded it, too. But I know you're going to blow me out of the water, Mia.
