Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
And so you tighten the wires another notch, and the suspense grows more heavy. This story is so finely crafted, it takes my breath away:)The tension is a living thing in this chapter, and I can imagine Hermione wanting to just start screaming and not stop. She's being strong and getting done what needs to be done. Severus just needs to come to a place where he can see that, and where he realizes he still has reasons to live. More now than ever before, if he could see that. I have faith that he will. I have faith that you will write it properly:){{hugs}}Fizzabella

Thank you, Fizzabella. There are days when your faith is what sustains me in writing this. I'm so grateful for your support. I think you are right about Hermione, that she cannot stop, or else the tension would eat her alive. The trial begins in the next chapter. We're almost there!Thank you so much. All my love. xoxox

Awesome review numbers, and this chapter sets the perfect pretrial mood!

It's hard to read all this despair. I think I can understand why Severus is reacting in this way, but this doesn't help much! I still feel sorry for the poor guy :(Fortunately, Hermione appears to be more combactive than in the precedent chapter: let's hope Severus will find his strenght as well!Oh! And while I definitely prefer him when he's detached or sneering or whatever else (provided that he's master of the situation), I love that you made him so truly human to show weakness. You depict a Severus that rings true, and this is the most important thing :)Good chapter, I'll wait eagerly for the next one!

, I know that it is hard to read. Hope is hard to come by for Snape and Hermione right now, but we're on the way somewhere and getting closer all the time. I promise not to drag on and on in this section. Thank you for seeing Snape as human and (therefore necessarily sometimes) weak. To me, Snape as a man is what is paramount, not Snape as Super!Spy, and I'm glad you like him here, despite his weakness and his despair. I hope to get back to sneering soon!Thank you so much for reviewing!

Such love and devotion she shows him. She could have walked away. Surely he can see that. But the possibility of Azkaban looms large in the distance, and he's afraid to let her invest any more emotion in him than she has to, because he knows how much it will hurt her to lose him. This is such a beautifully written story. Maybe I'm just an old sap, but I love it. I can hardly wait to see how it turns out.

, you've touched on something that I've been afraid to articulate too clearly in the story--the idea that in some way he thinks he's sparing her. Snape is nothing if not distressingly singleminded at times, and now that he has fixed on what he considers to be the inevitable outcome, yes, I think there is a way in which he is trying to prepare her, trying not to crush her. I'm so glad you're an old sap if you are still liking the story! More soon. We're on the way to the trial now. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! xoxo

I find it hard to express how much I like this chapter. It walks perilously close to things that have happened to me in RL. The memory of keeping going and waiting, half hoping for and half dreading some sort of explosion surfaced as I was reading your description of Hermione and Severus.

, Thank you. For me, these sections walk dangerously close to my own past, and they have been both dreadful and in some ways cathartic to write. I'm both glad and sorry that it touches on real things for you, too. I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you.

That was a beautiful chapter. Hermione is so strong, but it's that kind of strong where you don't let yourself acknowledge your feelings or your exhaustion and you just keep doing what you need to do, because if you stop, you'll break. And every action and setting and conversation is so fantastically vivid. I love it.

This was so amazingly written. The tension was palatable (sp?). The characterization amazing.I can't wait to read more, and will be so very sorry when the story is done.

Ouch. Poor Hermione - she's being dreadfully strong (and stubborn) here, isn't she? I suppose she does know Severus well enough by now to know that one has to be stubborn with him sometimes, and has reason to hope that it will all come out for the best... but even so, not envying her too much right now!Poor Severus, too - all this seems to have overwhelmed him completely. I just hope that he'll come out of this deep hole eventually; he deserves that and so does Hermione.I loved all the little bits in this - Hermione's outing with Minerva and Phineas Nigellus getting told off in particular. And if they didn't need Dumbledore's testimony, I'd be all for ... doing something, unnice, to his portrait. Grrr. That man is infuriating!~Kribu
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, stubborn! That's Hermione to a tee, in my mind. Strong and stubborn. Much like her husband. Snape, to me, is so much the same, just moving in an opposite direction right now, but equally determined. But I have faith in Hermione. Yes, Dumbledore. Gah. What an unmitigated bastard.Thank you, Kribu!!

I took a few moments to read the other reviews and your right I'm not the only one having a problem with Severus' behavior. Ironically the way your wrote this chapter has me feeling some empathy towards him. He is overwhelmed, being someone who is consistently in control he is now out of control, denied his magic and has no contingency plan because he never thought he would need it. However, this is not a sad chapter. The forces are rallying and I think that Severus will be very suprised at his trial (at least I hope I will be).I only hope that when this is all over he will be there when Hermione crashes, because she will. No one is infinitely strong, everyone at one time or another needs to be carried. And after this Hermione should be carried on a litter by six handsome burly men and worshiped as a Goddess.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Of course you're not alone in feeling that way,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. He's infuriating. Selfish and infuriating and stubborn. But I think he, too, deserves to be carried sometimes. He bore a lot (and a lot for her) during the war, and if she has to step up to the plate here... I don't think their relationship will be worse for it in the end. And I'm glad you felt a little empathy for him here. He is very lost right now, I think. Now I have an image of Hermione on a litter, being borne through the streets by strong, lovely men. hehehe. Thank you for reading and reviewing!

As always, a great chapter. I've spent the last week rereading HBP to see where this story fits in relationship to the book. I don't know which amazes me more, how perfectly your story fits into the frame of the original or the fact that SL isn't actually part of HBP. I kept reading and thinking, the chapter can't be over or that is where... Each chapter provides new insight into a character that in so consistent with my reading of the story (and I read the first 4 books aloud as chapter books to my daughter-- so there was a lot of comment when a supporting character like Kingsley or the twins entered the story.) I loved that McGonagall took control of the conversation and hushed Dumbledore. I wonder if anyone else (other than Alberforth) has ever done that to him. But I was stunned when you had Kingsley offer to send aurors to her parents, but ,of course, he would do that.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Makaem, I'm really honored that you feel SL fit well inside canon. I write this world because I love this world so much, because JKR wrote books that captured my heart and set my mind on fire. And to know that you've blended them in your mind is the greatest compliment you could ever pay me. Thank you so much. Yes, I loved writing Minerva shushing DD! She is truly a Gryffindor. :)

The portrait scene is loads better. Good work, you!I really like the journalist (not to mention his name!). Any chance of him reappearing in furture chapters?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I didn't make up his name--it's canon! Or not really canon, but from those issues of the Daily Prophet that got made somewhere along the line, maybe for JKR's website or something. But I'm glad you liked it! And I suspect you will see him again.Thank you, as always. I couldn't write this story without you.

I understand him, but he's still an idiot. Fighting tooth and nail against everything that offers even a glimmer of good or hope or comfort. Of course he's telling himself that it's easier that way. But it really isn't.I hope you'll give your poor readers a sign of hope soonish.

I do so love the way you describe Snape. It just delights me. I know. I know he's being dreadful and difficult to read and that it took to long to get to the trial, but we're there now, and you'll see the first part of it in the next chapter. I thought this was a bit more hopeful, but perhaps I am so mired in angst that anything would seem more hopeful! More hope coming up. :)Thank you for reading and reviewing! xoxo

"That night, he slept like the dead."That is the best line in the chapter; it says so much! And I loved McGonagall wrestling with Phineas, and I loved her telling Dumbledore to stuff it. And I loved Hermione saying "that's Madam Snape, NOT Miss Granger."I love Kingsley going "oh shit" and I love McGonagall immediately taking Hermione's side.Severus' fear, anguish, depression, desolation and hopelessness are really palpable. But "That night, he slept like the dead," is sheer brilliance. :)

I don't want to make any flippant remarks. There is a saying about medicine that I came across once, "The bitterer the betterer." We all just want Severus and Hermione to be happy and for Snape to be vindicated. The price of that is so very high it would give any thinking being nightmares. Praise be that Snape has Hermione but the one thing she can't do is dig him out of the Slough of Dispond, that he has to do for himself.I don't envy you the task you have set yourself. I think I'll follow along. However, Dumbledore is an entirely different matter. I'm so furious about his manipulating cruelty, if he wasn't already dead I'd strangle him myself. Heck, If I knew he could feel anything in his present state, I'd burn his portraits, all of them! As you can tell, I'm somewhat emotionally invested in this story.

Oh, le Chatelaine, I know. I know what everyone wants and I want it too. It pains me in a way to have to go here, but at the same time... I can't say it's all ok until it is. It really and truly will not be very much longer. I'm glad you're willing to follow along, but I will understand no matter what. Thank you for being invested in the story. That is the greatest gift you could give me.

I like the way you are showing how 'abnormal' everything is now that the war is over and things are going back to 'normal' life, I like that Hermione is not coddling Severus, or forcing herself upon him, but still making her presence known, and I really like that subtle shift at the end of the chapter where she climbed into his bed and they both slept. It was beautifully written and exectuted.

The desolation in Severus's manner is nearly tangible. Hermione is so strong to be able to deal with that day after day. Going into his bedroom and into his bed was a smart move.

Thank you so much for the great update! I am feeling both sad and anger towards Severus at the moment. Sad because I feel for the despair he must be feeling (at least I hope that is one of his reasons for the way he acts), but also angry that he rather wallow in his own selfpity and feeling sorrow for him self that he didn't die as he had planned to do. I want to smack his head and tell him to get a grip and to see that he actually have someone in his life that will stick by him, that loves him and who has no ulterior motive than her love for him. I also want to hold him, stroke his hair and tell him that he can relax, it is over and that things will be better because I won't allow them to be anything else.
Severus is allowed to be in a limbo for a while, but at the same time I am angry at him for punishing Hermione for saving him, in a way it like he tells her that her love for him aint enough for him to go on, that he never intended it to be a "happy ever after" for the two of them, that he rather be dead than living with and loving her. Thank godness she is a Gryffindor, only stupid bravery and stubbornness would have kept someone go out there each and every day, figthing for a love that has given up on you. He better get a grip before the trial is over. If he intends to hold a potential freedom as a condition for telling her he loves her, she should whish him well and walk away from him, taking it as a proof that he migth have had feelings for her, but not feelings of the debt and strength she has for him and that she needs from the man she loves. He migth not have much to offer her at the moment, but the only thing she wants is his love. If he cant love her enough to see that what she needs to go on is to know that he still loves her, no matter the outcome of the trial, he doesn't deserve her!

. You have a knack for saying exactly the right thing at the right time. I never meant in ANY way for Severus's love for Hermione (or willingness to stop acting like an ass) to read as being predicated on the outcome of the trial. EVER. But I will be extremely careful not to let those things too near each other. That's really enormously helpful. And yes, thank God she's a Gryffindor, indeed. :) And I'm glad, too, that they've had almost two years together now. I think she understands him better than she realizes. We'll be off to the trial in the next chapter. Thank you so much for reading and for your wonderful reviews. xoxoxox

I have tears in my eyes... She is so strong, so amazingly strong and courageous, he is very lucky to have her! So is the trial up next? Or are there any more hurdles we have to jump before that?I can't wait for the update, I so desperately want them to be happy again!!Great chapter, I hated DD!!!gab

How can words on a screen impart such melancholy pain? In canon, everything was suddenly fine once Voldemort was dead. That seems so incredibly shallow and unbelievable now, as I read your words and see the world you posit, because yours seems so much more the way things would have been. Your world makes me weep, but that is because the end of darkness is not automatically nothing but light. I believe your world, and it makes me incredibly sad. (That is a compliment, by the way.)I am thrilled that there are those who would come to Severus' defense, who would take Hermione's word and accept what she says. I love that Minerva (she's incredible) and Harry (who is as complex as he should be) are standing by her, that Luna will be coming soon, that Ollivander (great first name for him, by the way!) will help, and even Phineas feels he owes her something.I love that she has quoted Dumbeldore's words back to him and that he seems startled to hear how his carefully-laid plans actually turned out. I ache for both Severus and Hermione--you have made me ache for them both. He is lost and has no expectation of rescue yet, cannot see that he has the right to fight, while she (who does see it) is, in your marvelous words, "a guest in some portion of his life that she could never touch." They still have so far to travel to get through the end of the darkness. They are taking baby steps, though, but it is still a long and difficult journey. This continues to be amazing, each chapter better and richer than the one before. I am utterly in awe.

Hermione is so brave---so brave! How can she not cry, when this chapter left me with an aching throat and a heart burning with tears? You have captured the absolute silently screaming heart of Despair. So perfectly--so perfectly.So. Severus has given up? He has no hope? And he is taking it all out on Hermione---as if it were she, and not actually Dumbledore (if we go with recent history, and not Severus' own from 20 years prior), who put him where he is now.I hope Dumbledore (via his portrait) is ready to chow down on quite a large dinner of crow, soon. Most likely at the trial. And what was Phineas Black thinking?!?And poor Hermione, in that silent house, with the silently staring Severus, who apparently is terrified that if he lets himself FEEL again he'll start screaming and won't be able to stop. And my throat is still aching.Bravo!

. I don't think he means to punish her so much as that he cares so little how anyone is feeling right now. It seems to me that he's flipped the caring switch on purpose--that nothing is registering because he won't allow it to. His despair is like a living thing in that house, something she has to step around to cross the room, and I feel terrible for both of them--it's a cold and frightening way to live. But ultimately, they are two of the most vibrant characters I've ever known, and I trust them not to stay this way forever. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! xoxoxo

Depression is awful in reality and annoying in literature. Yet, the way you portray their fight for their sanity makes me nod in appreciation. I loved the way she accepted his tossing her aside, and the way she wormed her way back. I loved that he did not drive her away. All the way hating his depression, I loved the way you showed glimmers of hope. Loved it.

Nata, thank you. I'm glad that there were things in it that you could love despite the kind of bleak monotony of depression. They are so alike in some ways, in their stubborness, in their complete intractability, and also in their fierceness. And I think they love each other fiercely. She won't let him slip away. That was....depressing. Well written, but depressing.Maybe next time we can get something more cheerful. Perhaps something along the lines of 'the Wizengamot finds the accused not guilty of any of the charges'.. please?Still enjoying the story,Faith

You have portrayed Snape's anomy with such heart-breaking detail. I can't imagine it would've been any other way in the immediate aftermath of the war (had JKR allowed him to survive). It evokes such a visceral response. Amazing work, Lariope, just amazing.

Thank you, Emmeline33. I'm very glad we share a vision of what the world, post war, would have been like. *hugs you*
