Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
You write action amazingly well. I've always loved the angst/emotional scenes, of course, but this one was edge-of-the-seat all the way. And oh, that Patronus! Will the boys really figure out the truth of Hermione and Snape before the final battle? It would be so amazing to read the last scenes of DH through that particular viewfinder!

! That means a lot to me, as I always fear the action scenes the most--that's where I feel most out of my depth. And I'm so happy that you liked the Patronus! I can't say about the boys... but I hope you will be happy with my decisions. :)Thank you so much for reviewing! xoxo

Wow! That was so intense and action packed. Definately prefere this version to JK's one. I liked how the goblin did not just run off with the sword, but stayed to hlp them get out. I wonder what debt he will require of Harry?

! I'm really glad you liked it. I think Griphook is kind of fascinating--he's so different from almost every character in the Potterverse, so I was glad to spend some time with him.At this point, I'm not sure that Griphook will call in his debt--I just thought it was illustrious of the mindset of the goblins, that everything is based on oweing and owning. Thank you so much for reviewing!

you made the Gringotts-experience and what is more - the escape a much more interesting story than JKR managed to write. A dragon, my foot. In your story they really had to fight their way through. And you made the grumpy Gringott a bit more understandable. Not to forget your philosophy about "life debt"!Yes, we toss these words around, you are right.Where ends loyalty and where starts magic...Why does she fear the boys know about her story just because they saw her new patronus. they are not that quick are they? you onyl see what you expect to see, or what you know. but they would very much have to jump to conclusions from their actuall point of information, wouldn't they?looking forward to the next chapters. they are in a hurry I dare say. things will happen very quick now. so don't keep us waiting to long *g*salva

Hi Salva!I think she's afraid that if the boys hear her call for Snape in the portrait, that they'll put it together with her new Patronus, but you are right--I don't think they would. You know when something is so obvious to you that you think everyone else will see it too? That's what I think she's feeling there.Yes, things are in a hurry now... and I'm glad you liked the chapter. Thank you so much!

This is getting frantic! I´m specially eager to read your version of the DH from now on. The end is aproaching and I can´t help but have mixed feelings about it... I was surprised about Hermione asking for Snape´s help in front of the boys. It wouldn´t have ocurred to me that the first thing your Hermione would think about entering Hogwarts would be doing it throught Snape -consequences be damned- though it all makes sense. It´s also interesting her change of Patronus. I take from Snape´s explanation in the previous chapter that you consider the change of the Patronus form is due to a moment of realization, a moment of reflection and life-altering conclusions, not plain love -if love can be called "plain". I´m just curious, which moment would you place this change into? I have to admit the Patronuses truly interest me, I find fascinating the idea of a spell who show -translated into an animal form, that is- the true self of the characters.I´ve read others fic which speculate about what Snape´s original Patronus would have been and I have to say I agree with you. I´ve always thought the best animal for Snape is the falcon, not the snake nor the raven -which are quite commonly used. The falcon for me means inteligence, sharpness, danger, elegance and loyalty, all of them qualities I would apply to Snape.I´ve write more than I´ve acostumed to do. Sorry about the extension and the grammar mistakes! Thank you for such a wonderful fic!

!Regarding Hermione's Patronus--yes, you've got my theory in one. I think Hermione's Patronus changed when she and Snape erased her parents' memories and destroyed her house. Actually--at the point just after that, when he gives her the parchment with the address of Spinner's End on it. Because I think that was her tangible transition into both adulthood--to have to destroy your own past to protect what you love is such an unfathomable decision, which she makes with grace and strength--and she essentially, I think, ends her childhood there. And for a moment, she is homeless; she has destroyed her own home... and then Snape steps into the breach with that parchment, which I think is partly a deeper act of marriage even than they've already experienced--that he essentially becomes her only family and his home is the only home she has... but is also a very deep commitment of trust. So yeah... sorry for the long-windedness. That's where I think it is. :)I'm glad you agree with me on the animal choice! I admit to sweating a little over that, although to me, it is the most fitting. I agree with all you said about intelligence and sharpness... ferocity, elegance.... but, too, I see him as she saw him during the battle of seven Potters... like a bird of prey. Ok, I have gone on way too long. Thank you for such a lovely review!! xoxo

The Goblins were scary. They would rather destroy their entire building rather than let them escape. It is difficult to understand those who take the neutrality stance in a war. The race is now on as to who will find the Horcrux placed at Hogwarts first. Yikes.

I'm glad you found the goblins scary. I was a little scared of them myself! And yes, I think they are very hard to understand. Thank you so much for reviewing!

Oh my, you had me sitting on the egde of my chair almost not daring to continue reading in fear of what horror they had to go through to get out of Gringotts. Throughout the story I have complimented you for your twist and rewriting of DH, every word has been well deserved and this chapter once again proves what a brilliant writer you are. My honest opinion; if JKR had wrote DH half as good as you have written "Second Life", "Deathly Hallows" would have been a worthy ending to the Harry Potter series. I can not say just as good, since there is no hope that JKR would ever see reason and see that Hermione and Severus belong together and that Ron can never be anything else than a brother-like friend (though I am still mad at him for abonding them in the woods and for all those times he has turned his back on them for some dumb reason or another; Triwizard tournament, thinking Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers, etc etc etc). Therefore, your story is the very best and everyone who dares argue with me over that will loose 250 points and serve detention with Filch in the deepest, darkest doungeons of Hogwarths for the next 3 years.....I wonder how long it will take the boys to realise why Hermiones patronous have changed? Needless to say, I am soooo looking forward for the next update!!!!

!I'm glad you liked this chapter. I dreaded writing it, and then I found that I liked Griphook quite a lot better than I thought I did. :)I understand your feelings about Ron; I do. Even though I tried to give him more of a reason for being there in this chapter. So long as he stays away from Hermione, I'm good with it. :)As for the boys figuring out Hermione's Patronus... it can't be too much longer, can it? :) I hope you continue to enjoy it, my dear. Thank you so much for reviewing!

I really like the changes to this one, especially tying it together with GoF for the dragon. Good job. And the Patronus is lovely. Very good job on getting into the characters in this chapter as well. At the end, I felt as though I practically was Hermione. And yes, more Snape. There needs to be more Snape with Hermione. :-)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes! More Snape! I agree, of course. It's always hard to write an all-trio or all-Snape chapter. But more Snape is on the way! Thanks for reviewing,

Oooh, amazing! I love how that escape from Gringotts was done -- very nice, and I have to say that I actually prefer it to canon! I can't wait to see the next chapter, although I have to say that I'm somewhat dreading it. I know, I know, I've been saying over and over that I'm dreading the end of this story, and I'm really not because I can't wait to see the rest of the story through Hermione's eyes.Fantastic job, yet again!

Oh, dear lord! This is more suspenseful and agonizing than the original, in part because you give a clearer sense of whatthefuckisgoingon? than JKR did. And such interesting deviations you are introducing now!I love that Griphook plays out his life debt (and that they now owe him!), and, for some reason, I find it much more intriguing that they did not fly back to Hogwarts on the back of a dragon. I am sure there are other substantial reworkings here, but I am so much more intrigued to be seeing this all from Hermione's perspective that I am abandoning trying to figure out what's canon and what's Lariope---I have long since decided that I like your version so much better (love it, in fact)! So much wonderful writing throughout (as there always is). This might be my favorite in this chapter:Hermione reached down into herself, below the shields she had put in place to take on the persona of Bellatrix Lestrange, below the pain and the darkness of the tunnel, down to where she kept the few hard truths that anchored her to the world. And what a magnificent Patronus she now has! How utterly perfect for the woman she has become! In coming to this chapter, I did what I have been doing throughout and re-read the chapter before to get a running start. And it made me weep once more. You are amazing.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, you are amazing. And I am always in your debt. I'm still so glad you liked 36. *grins happily*I'm glad you liked this, and that you weren't disappointed by the lack of dragon ride. And also happy that it felt suspenseful and a little scary. Hurrah!!And I'm terribly pleased that you liked her Patronus. So glad that it came through that it's just as much for her as it is for him. As usual, you have made me a very happy girl. Thank you so much! *hugs tightly*

They are going to be soo tired when this is over! First all that climbing, then the near disasterous escape, and now they're off to Hogwarts which will lead them almost immediately into the 'Final Battle' of the War... Unless you choose to mess with the time-line here a little bit too... Love this fic! Looking forward to the next!!!

Once again another excellent chapter. I don't think I reviewed the last chapter, but that was also excellent. I loved the calm and bittersweet serene ending, which is a sharp contrast to this chapter's action and adventure.
