Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Of course it is. I wish the world were that way. But I'll do as well as I can for him while being as honest as I can. I promise. :)Thank you for reviewing!

Madam, you are are one astounding writer. No tears this time just awe at how beautifully this chapter was written. The emotions were so powerfull ,I felt my gut twisting and my heart booming. I know you will have me crying again in next chapter as they still have so much to face, but for now I'm happy they are back together. Lariope forget the galaxy of stars, you deserve the whole big universe. Thank you so much for writing this wonderful story.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Portugal Faro, this means the world to me. I'm so glad that the emotions of the chapter came through and that you were able to feel everything along with Severus and Hermione. Thank you for everything, my dear--all your incredible support. You are such a giving person, and I'm so lucky to know you.

These walls, the fucking horrible walls with their stained and peeling paper, the cabbage roses his mother had chosen in some twisted, misguided attempt at homemaking--these walls were closing in on him again, and he was trapped here, hiding here, just like a child, like a fucking helpless child again. He had duped the Dark Lord and lived to tell the tale, but he was twelve years old again, hiding from the boys in the street who would find him and hurt him and beat him and throw him in Azkaban and say that what he had done was nothing, nothing.Rip my heart out why don't you? Fucking awesome, Lariope. The most amazingly poignant chapter you've ever written. My tears, they just pour down my face. I read it twice and cried more the second time. Mr. Weasley! The clock that points to Home except for Fred! Hermione's lioness roaring over her husband and daring others to try anything! I am so overwhelmed with the passion and heartbreak...essentially-the love-of it all.Can not wait to see what happens during the ensuing days and weeks for the wizarding world. And I just love that you included small details like Harry gently moving the dead elves out of the way, and of the way Hermione and Snape's bodies fit together on the couch....you are a brilliant artist.

, I'm so overwhelmed. This chapter was so hard to write, so painful to write, and I'm sorry it caused you pain, too, but it's good to know that we share it. *Puts

's heart gently back where it belongs*And I'm glad you liked Mr Weasley, who, to me, is such a good man. If I wrote the series, he would be the Dumbledore character. ;)I'm glad you're looking forward to the next. I'm hard at work on it. I can't bear to leave them here for very long. Thank you so much for such a lovely review. I'm so glad this chapter was moving for you. xoxoxo

The only problem with this chapter is that it's not nearly enough.Thank you, for bringing them back together! But I can't wait until he wakes up. I know they've a lot ahead of them, but somehow I can't think anything too bad can happen as long as they're together. And I would absolutely LOVE to see Hermione, Severus, or BOTH, present themselves before Dumbledore's portrait (to his everylasting shock) and give him what for!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I actually wrote a scene and had to discard it in which Hermione and Dumbledore face off! But I'm sure the idea will work its way in somewhere :)Don't worry; I'm hard at work on the next, and I know what you mean--the feeling that together they somehow have to be okay. I'm glad you feel that. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, Countrymouse! xoxox

My lord, woman. This is powerful stuff.I see now why we have quite a distance to go yet. I absolutely adore the way the people who truly love her rally to her side and take her word for what that they cannot verify independently. Arthur continues to be an unexpected rock, understanding what she could have done and why she did what she did instead, as well as reasoning through the possible scenarios they might face now. I want to hug that dear, smart man.I love that Harry made sure she saw the memories as soon as possible, recognizing that they were left as much for her as for him. I love that Ron is working so hard to support her and understand what happened. And I share her indignation that anyone could think Severus able to be tamed or guilty of anything worth putting him a cage for. You make us feel deeply for his despair and his need for her, even as he sees no future at all for himself.I very much look forward to the next morning, to the conversations to come, and to the battles they still have ahead of them. There is still a lot of pain and struggle ahead, but these two have come through the fire together. It will not be easy, but in your unbelievably capable hands it will, ultimately, be right.Magnificent.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Again, I love you. Just want to remind you of that. And not because you say lovely things to me that make me smile and sometimes weep a little, but because you see the best in Hermione and Severus, the way I do. Thank you.Love and loyalty were such enormous themes in canon that I think they cannot help but manifest here--that there will be those who will stand beside her no matter what--and he will gain them as allies simply for loving her. But there are dark times ahead. Thank you for your trust,

"hissed" is much better! It gets the mood across of what she is feeling. I hope somewhere in his subconscious he realizes she is there and she is going nowhere...not without him. I still think that as much as Hermione has been his rock she has been his. They are joined elementally. Well done as always, my dear. Now no more Portus or Droxy Drool until you finish this fic! Irish
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
That "hissed" is just for you, but you knew that, I bet. :)And now you're outing me about the Droxydrool? Not fair. I'm glad you feel their connection at such a basic level. It means I've been doing my job. Hurrah!!Thank you for such a lovely review, Irish. xoxox

"Devastation" should be the title of this chapter.
Perhaps I have a weakness for weak-Snape, but here he is more human, I think, than in the preceding 40 chapters. He did what he had to do, and now--he has to do nothing. Instead of limitless choices, he sees no choices, like some vacuum in space, some hole he's fallen into.
Thank you for Mr. Weasley. Really. I was waiting for everyone to start in on her, no one to understand. He does, and I hope you give Snape and Hermione others who do as well. They're gonna need it.
Author's Response: Of course it should be. If I titled the chapters, that would be it. And now do you see why I was so reluctant to write this?
Your weakness, I think, is not for weak!Snape, but for Human!Snape--one who is not some robotic spy who is simply able to do everything, bear everything, but just a man.
I'm really glad you liked Mr Weasley, who is (apart from Snape) my absolute favorite character to write.
"allowing himself to touch the skin that had been forbidden to him for twenty years, skin that was his own again."Now that's writting! It hard when plans don't go the way you thought they should. Hopefully Severus has worked through his pity party (I know I am the only one who seems a little perturbed with his attitude, but I am not unsympathic to the emotional shock he's going through). Glad Hermione is not giving up, after what happened in the Shack I thought she just might let him be. Again wonderful superb writing.

Like every chapter revisited, this is even better, more moving, more heartbreaking the second time around. Magnificent.

I appreciate that you had Arthur Weasley state the realities of the situation. I know that we all are looking for a happy ending here, but the public is fickle and they do love having one icon that they can adore or crucify. I am also glad that you had him explain to Hermione that she made the only decision that anyone that loved could and pointed out Severus' actions on her behalf. Arthur was great here.I like the way you wrote Severus here as well - I can really see this type of response from him and it is heart rendering.Poor Hermione, just when she should have a break, there is so much more placed upon her shoulders. At least Harry is being reasonable about all of this.Another great update - thank you!

This review means more to me than you know. Thank you so much, Aeron, for seeing the truth of the world in the same way that I do--that fair is not always (or even usually) what happens, and that people in pain will strike at anything. And I'm glad you liked Mr Weasley. He is one of my very, very favorite characters. Hermione, throughout this story, has been asked to bear the absolutely unbearable for two whole years--or really, from the moment she entered the magical world, if we take canon as the backstory here. My husband jokes with me that this story should be called "The Torture of Hermione Granger." But if there were ever any doubt why she is a Gryffindor, let it be laid to rest. There is no braver young woman anywhere. I would trust her with anything. Silly that I feel so strongly about a fictional character, but there it is. And now I have rambled.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxoxaeron's response: Feel free to ramble - I had to laugh at your husband's working title for you fic. I am glad that you feel so strongly because it means that your characters are something more than two demensional. Happy writing to you!~ Aeron aka Arynwy

Wonderful! He is going to wake up with her there, whether he wants to or not. Whether he admits he called for her, she still came when he needed her most.

Beautiful. There are such complex emotions in these scenes, in this time, and you're describing them beautifully. Awesome, as always, and my heart is aching for Hermione and Severus both, right now, as they have to navigate through what must feel like an entirely different world than the one they lived in before the fall of Voldemort. I salute you:){{hugs}}Fizzabella

I am so happy that I took onw final click on "newly submitted" before turning off the pc for the nigth. There it was, the story I have hoped for, wanted, longed for:-) I am so happy to see another chapter, you really made my day (or night since it is almost 0100...) How I begged for Hermione to go to Severus when he was looking for her, how grateful I was for the kind, smart and necessary words from Arthur, and how happy I was when she did go to him! Some of the magic (there are so many things that makes this story magical:-)) is how strong Hermione and Severus are together, their love for eachother is so well written, I have seldom seen anything like it!!! So, while I do know that there still are battles to be fougth before they can be truly free, as long as they are together they can take it all! I have to read the chapter over again now, I kind of rushed through the beginning, looking over Severus shoulder to see if Hermione would come. Now that I know shw will come, I can relax and read it in the tempo it deserves:-)))))

Powerful imagery in this chapter. It's haunting and sad and I only hope that Hermione will prove to be a lioness once more and protect Severus from the demons which will surely haunt him. Lovely fic. I really enjoyed Arthur in this chapter as well. He's just perfect.

Poor Severus. He was better off when he didn't think there was anything to live for.You gave the whole wand thing a new side! I hadn't realised that with ordering Snape to kill him, Dumbledore in the end tried to make sure that it would be Snape who had the wand, and who would ultimately be killed by Voldemort for it.Still disgusted by Snape, I assume. *grr*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You know, in some ways I agree. :)Yes, I was horrified when I read book 7 that Dumbledore had intended for Snape to take the wand. He admits it in King's Cross, though later Harry says that DD wanted to leave the wand masterless. I firmly believe that DD knew Snape would die over that wand one way or the other and did it anyway. I'm often quite distressed to think that Snape found out, really, that DD had betrayed him, in the Shrieking Shack, just before he died. But then, perhaps I care way too much for fictional characters. ---> This way to the Dumbledore bashing party!
Response from dream_labyrinth (Reviewer)
Well, Harry's words can't be taken for proof, because we know he never gets anything that's not spelled out for him in painstaking detail. ;-)I think DD didn't waste any more thought on what would happen to Severus than he would on a pawn in a chess game.Actually, I think if he had really wanted to, DD could have ended the war at a much earlier stage, maybe even before Voldemort's first fall, he was just too caught up in the idea of having a worthy opponent for all his strategy and cunning to do it.

Mr Weasley, do pay attention, for I’m about to take your little friend prisoner. Whatever will you do?*gigglesnort*Definitely! Harry is so often too blinded by his personal feelings to see that even somebody he might dislike might not be evil. It's a wonder he survived book 7, really.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I do love the gigglesnort. :)And your absolutely right that Harry thinks that if he dislikes someone that they must be evil. And yet, I've tried to be a tad kinder to Harry than canon was. I hope that will come through before too long. :)Thank you so much for reading, Dream_Labyrinth!

I love how you depict Severus' insecurity, Hermione's eagerness and Dumbledore's manipulativeness. He's letting everybody stumble helplessly in the dark, and I can't help thinking he enjoys being the one in control, with everybody else his puppets to move in whatever way he wants. It's like he's playing a giant chess game with Voldemort, and he enjoys it too much to end it quickly, too caught up with all his little plots and plans.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Of course, I agree about Dumbledore, and I read a really interesting article of RedHen's when I was writing the Elder Wand chapters about how the war could have ended much more simply, but that it seemed Dumbledore didn't just want to win, he wanted to win with style. Which is ultimately detrimental to everyone. Thank you for reviewing!
Response from dream_labyrinth (Reviewer)
Do you have a link to that article? Because that's my thought exactly, and I'd love to get somebody else's more scientific agreement. ;-)

*picks up chin from floor*That was gorgeous. The way they both overcame their insecurities, the way they both moved away from doing what Dumbledore told them to do to doing what they wanted.Sex as a result of a rational decision rather than a result of attraction and passion is so hard to get right in writing. You did a tremendous job!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so, so glad that you thought that went well. Sex is so hard to write to begin with, and I started in a difficult place. And the whole issue of "rational decision making" vs "emotional non-con" is such a sticky one. *dances*
