Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
I had a feeling you were going to use the potion on Severus and not Harry. But he is so mad....I thought he would be happy about being alive. Hopefully every thing will work out.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
He is so mad. I think the Snape I've written equates fear and anger, which I think is natural in some way for a spy--to hate fear, to hate feeling it. Anger he can pretend he controls, but fear he cannot. But have faith. I do. :)Thank you for reviewing, Kimbee!

I can't blame her for saving him, but how heartbreaking... For him to hate her for it.I hope that sooner or later he will see the light.

I can't blame either of them, when it comes down to it. I don't think either was considering the other in that moment, and they've wounded each other. But there's a serious amount of history between them now and I don't think it will be undone so easily. Thank you for reviewing!

Take the easy out? Not you, no way :)And here I thought they were going to be looking for a nice cottage rental in Hogsmeade together <snerk>.Seriously, I love, love this twist. With your beautifully reasoned and eloquent depictions of their characters, it wasn't really a surprise to me. The way you had things set up, I couldn't imagine Severus being happy with Hermione for deploying Vita Secundus, any more than I could imagine her not using it.On another note, I love the way "Second Life" rescues Harry and Ron from the curse of being Big Dumb Boys. Actually I've been thinking that for some time now, but their loyalty and friendship shone so brightly here I finally remembered to mention it.

. Every time I tried to think of a way out of this (because this has been planned from the beginning--I've been watching it rush at me like a freight train) I couldn't think of any way to stop it, any way that the man I know and write would leap up, kiss her soundly as a thank you and run back out to battle. Or look for a vacation cottage, in the alternative. ;)I'm so happy to think that you find both their actions believable. I know there is nothing in the world that would have stopped her from doing what she did; I think even if she'd known... she might have done it anyway. She likely would have done it anyway. And thank you about Harry and Ron! I do love those two, and they are so much a part of Hermione to me--the trio lives inviolate in my heart. Thank you for reviewing!!

I was thinking about you today, and about this fic, and I was hoping you didn't take offense at my saying that if you were going to kill Snape I'd have to stop reading. I must admit I'd forgotten all about the Vita Secundus!I really loved how Harry ALMOST IMMEDIATELY told her what the Horcrux said. GO HARRY!!! And <3 Luna!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, no, I wasn't offended. Everyone has dealbreakers. You have to, I think, to keep your heart intact, and to limit how much you HAVE to read!!! I think everyone quickly develops them after finding fanfic, because otherwise we'd never do ANYTHING but read. :)I'm glad you liked Harry and Luna here. One of the things I most admired in canon was the steadfastness of those friendships. Thank you so much for reviewing!

Now that I'm coherent, this chapter was very beautifully written (as with the rest, but this one's a gem with it's emotive descriptions of character); I found his reaction quite fitting, related to his ongoing inner struggle. I'm hoping Harry never really needed the potion from the beginning, but we shall see....

Oh my, what a ride we're on. I knew he was not going to be pleased when Hermione used the Vita on him, especially as he's been so detailed and resigned in his preparation for his death. But I know Hermione couldn't have done anything differently. Very gripping chapter here, very lovely in many ways. Really can't wait to see how Hermione and Severus get through the battle, both between themselves and the external Battle of Hogwarts!! I see it was your birthday, Happy Belated!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm very, very happy to think that both of their reactions seemed inevitable. Thank you! One more chapter of DH, and then we are on their battlefield. :)And thank you for the birthday wishes!

*small animal-like cries of distress*Severus, you idiot! No real coherent thoughts right now...I just want more!Poor Hermione! She felt like she couldn't live without him, and now that he's living he's angry with her for it! Love this fic! Looking forward to the next!

God that was good!!! Loved the way you wove in parts of the writing of JK. Can not wait for the next chapter I want to read Hermione's response to his temper. Sometimes you just want to beat the crap out of men!! I could really feel all of Hermione's heartache and turmoil through this chapter.patently biting finger nails away!!! BIG HUGS FOR BEING AN EXCELLENT WRITER AND UPDATER!!!!!!!! TRULY WISHING FOR A HIGHER RATING THAN FIVE RIGHT NOW!!!!

Severus would have rather died and been with Lily, he thinks, than be with his living wife? How tragic. I cried through the whole chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, not Lily! Not Lily!I wasn't clear enough about this, my dear, I'm sorry. When he says before the battle, that he hopes she dies quickly and that they're able to find each other on the other side, THAT's what he's talking/thinking about in the Shack. I think the signal I meant to give was that he had put his feelings about Lily to rest, sort of said goodbye to them in Chapter 36 when he makes the memory chain. But I hope that more of Severus's feelings and motivations will be illuminated in time. Thank you so much for reviewing!

How fabulous can a birthday be? Your birthday, AND your story posted! This was beautifully written. She could no more stop herself from using the potion on him than he could stop himself from being enraged at her for doing it. Could he have stopped himself from doing the same if their positions were reversed? I think he *might* have done, but only because he has grown inured to the never having what he wants; grown inured to making enormous sacrifices for the "greater good."Beautifully done, darlin. You must be growing close to the end of your wonderful story..

Thank you so much. That these things BOTH seemed inevitable to you is all I could have hoped for. It's hard to think of the end of SL, as we have so much journey to make between them yet, but yes, the DH chapters are almost done. Thank you again for reading and reviewing,

What a great chapter on so many levels.Your plot was utterly captivating! I was sitting on the edge of my seat when that Horcrux started taunting Hermione. And OMG, what a time for Harry and Ron find out about Snape... right in the middle of the battle when there's no time to debrief and explain. Brilliant!I also loved Hermione's reaction to Snape's declaration of love...she screamed!! Sad, intense and suspenseful all rolled into one!Your characterization was dead on. I don't see any other reaction possible from Snape in the last scene.(Except, maybe, a nice box of chocolates?) Of course, he's going to be pissed off!!! Remember how he reacted when she sneaked into the room of requirements to get his textbook in chapter 16? Well, using the Vita Secundus was even worse than that, so he's going to react accordingly! Also, your attention to details took my breath away. I heard and saw buttons dance and roll on the floor...I saw figernails digging to lift the cork...I felt Lucius's hatred for Hermione vividly...You, my dear, are an amazing writer! Hope you had a good birthday my friend :)

! Your review means the world to me.It is VERY funny, when you put it like that, about Hermione and the declaration of love. :)There were so many threads between this chapter and 16, so I'm glad you mentioned it. It's funny when one calls back to another so strongly. And I'm so pleased you saw the details, my dearest. Thank you so much!

Oh, how wrenching! I feel so bad for both Hermione and Severus. Ron and Harry took the news better than I would have expected. Thanks for another incredible chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I think if they had found out in a different time (ie. NOT in the middle of the last battle), they would not have taken it as well. I think the battle threw things into relief: you can either trust your friend or not. I'm glad they chose to trust her.And I feel terrible for Hermione and Severus as well. :(Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

Hermione really did betray him, I guess. But he should have known that she would want to save him. That made me wince.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
It's wince-y, I agree. It hurt to write it, and hurts me still.

So Harry and Ron are actually more mature then Severus in this story, brilliant! Is it bad form to want to smack the newly risen in the back of the head?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, poor Snape. Cut him some slack! :) Though I am giggling hard at the notion of smacking the newly risen.Thank you for reviewing! :)

I already posted my review, then realized that today's a special day---It may be your birthday, dear lady, but you gave all of your faithful another amazing present! And since I'm back here, let me say two more things. First, bloody brilliant with the diadem! What a clever way to let Harry and Ron find out the truth (some of it, anyway---they still haven't seen that marriage certificate! That should be fun!!).Second, this is exactly how I would expect Severus to react. Hell, he's been planning to die for how long now? And it's not like you can just whip up another batch of that stuff in case they also need it for Harry---the whole bloody point of everything they've been doing all this time!So of course his first reaction is going to be exactly the one you gave him, brilliantly thought out and beautifully written (as always). *applauds**throws birthday kisses**waits (semi-)patiently for Tuesday*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You can't imagine how it relieves me to hear that! Thank you! And thank you for the birthday wishes. *hugs you*!

1. Scene in Room of Requirement, brilliant way for Harry and Ron to find out about Hermione and Snape's relationship2. Hermione's frantic rush to get to the Shrieking Shack with the battle raging around her, at once part of her flight and yet separate. Perfect.3. Harry and Ron getting a clue , enough said4. Severus' reaction to Hermione using the Vita Secundus on him, totally in character.Wonderful chapter! :)

Beautifully written--a bit of Orpheus ans Eurydice in this.I love these lines:"A witch? She fancied herself a witch? She waved her magic wand and things appeared out of the air? A teaspoon of liquid could call a man back from the dead? Was she really here at all, or was she five years old, asleep in the rocker on her parents’ back porch, dreaming fevered dreams in the sun?"

As long as he is still alive there is the chance to make it right again. I simply adore the way you are retelling, rewriting, remaking this. Thank you for letting both Hermione and Severus each get in one more confrontation with Lucius (though hadn't she wounded him before he met Severus? I expected him to tell Severus why he was bleeding!). Thank you for letting us see another way it could turn out---a lesson that Severus will need to learn in the next few chapters, I think! And thank you for giving us a Harry and Ron who realize that Hermione's judgment is worth everything. Thank you for giving us these words (and from the lovely Luna): “They don’t need telling, Hermione. They just need you to let them go with you.”I swear to God I'm going to have to get a waterproof keyboard to keep reading! And I am in exquisite agony: I don't want this ever to end, and I can't wait for more. Severus, come back---it may be a future you cannot imagine, but Hermione can. And that is thanks to Lariope. Now comes the chance at Snape's second life. Genius.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Actually, the reason her battle to reach the ground floor is so long was to give Lucius time to speak to Snape and then get back to the business of dueling. :) But those are strings I imagine you don't want/need to see. ;)I'm so happy that you mentioned Luna's line. I do love Luna. And you are right--Hermione has lived a Second Life, a double life for these two long years, but Snape's double life is ending now, and his true Second LIfe is just beginning. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, my dear.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Reviewer)
Ah, so Severus got to Lucius before Hermione did---I knew you'd have thought everything through! And I love it when the title iluminates and is illuminated by the story!

This is the most terrible cliffhanger ever!!! How could you!!This chapter was terrific, I loved each words of it. _That_ is the way Rowling should had wrote it.Please, please, don't make we wait too long for the next chapter! I suffered and screamed with Hermione, now I can't wait to see for what will follow...

I hope to stay on schedule--barring calamity, you'll see me again on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. ;)Thank you so much for reviewing!!

Wow, we knew all along what the Vita Secundus was for, but this turn of events I had not expected... I'm still hoping for a happy end for the two of them though. Please?? Great chapter, as usual.gab

Hi Lariope,I just read IrishRedLass' review ... is today (6/24) your birthday?! It's mine too! I was able to take today off to work in my garden as a birthday treat; when I saw the new chapter of SL this morning, I saved it to read as another treat when I came in. We're going to a baseball game tonight (my choice, though popular with the other members of the family).Whatever day it actually was, many happy returns, and I hope you had as pleasant a day as I am having.Oh, the chapter .... was amazing. You wove the realizations and events together beautifully. Severus' reaction to Hermione's use of the Vita Secundus is of course not what we wanted to see, but is exactly right plotwise/characterwise. His thoughts are so sad ... he wants life as he knows it to be over, and feels that the only way he can deserve Hermione is to make the sacrifce of dying. But what he doesn't see, of course, is that he DID make the sacrifice.RedRoo

Happy Birthday, RedRoo! I'm secretly really happy that we share a birthday, though I have no idea why that should be significant. ;)I wish I could have gardened today too, but alas, someone has to teach summer school. :) I'm glad that you liekd the chapter. No, it wasn't what people wanted, but I'm glad you thought it was right nonetheless. I've known this was coming from the very beginning, and it hurt to do it--I was hurt and scared for most of the weekend--but I still think it was the right choice, and I hope you will agree as the story plays itself out. Thank you so much for your review. xoxoxoLariope

I'm strangely happy that we share a birthday, too. I was amazed when I read IrishRedLass' birthday wishes to you!Too bad that you had to teach today ... I've spent many birthdays working too (and I'm going to be "paying" for my day off tomorrow). Nice to hear you garden, ... let me tell you about the planting I did in the front bed today ... *slaps head* ... no, RR, review page is *not* the place to discuss plants (or how INSANE it was for me to plant in late June here, even if only a few relatively heat loving plants to fill holes -- it was in the 90s today).I'm sorry to hear you spent the weekend hurt and scared. The hurt is natural -- you hurt for your characters -- but I hope the scared wasn't fear that you'd disappoint your readers. It's your story, after all, and you need to do what the story requires. My own reaction was certainly "oh NO!", but it made so much sense plot wise and Snape-wise that it felt right, even though it was awful to read about. And Severus really has to resolve/reach closure/let go of his First Life before he begins his Second Life. Having them fall into each others' arms at this point for a happily-ever-after ending would neither give Severus the growth he needs and deserves nor do justice to the rest of the story. Of course I'm writing this hoping fervently that a more-or-less-happily-ever-after ending happens eventually.oops! sorry to go on and on ... wishing you a great year, RR
