Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

We're that much closer to the end. Voldemort's plan so far hasn't worked. I can't wait until the next chapter!!

I'm curious what you see Voldemort's plan as being? And yes, we're quite close to the end of DH now... I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for reviewing!

Another fabulous chapter, Lariope! There was a so much happening that I had to read it several times to try to wrap my mind around all of it.It was such a tender scene when you described how Severus had ensured "that Hermione would inherit Spinner’s End and the meager amount of gold in his vault at Gringotts." How he loves her!As I read, I found myself wondering what part the Vita Secundum will play as the rest of your story unfolds. In Chapter 15, Severus cautions Hermione to use it only if necessary, and only for Harry. But she is so in love with her husband, how could she make such a decision to choose between him and Harry? And we know that the potion will not work against the Killing Curse. Is there some possibility that Voldemort may try the Killing Curse against Harry again, allowing Hermione to save Severus' life with the Vita Secundum? I know, I'm grasping at straws here. I'm not wanting Harry to die, but maybe there would be a way for Harry to defend himself against the Killing Curse without the need for the Vita Secundum?Another thing I wonder about is whether Voldemort created ANOTHER Horcrux in Severus when he gave him the ability of flight..... and, if so, what does that mean for Severus' chances for survival? Would Voldemort be able to kill Severus without diminishing himself? You certainly have been a busy little witch!Your portrayal of Snape's controlled rage as he dismissed Dumbledore from his presence was pure brilliance:Snape finally looked up, fixing the portrait with a dead, black stare. “I have endured your insufferable chatter daily through this endless year. I have held my tongue as you belittled my wife, and I have followed your orders though you doomed me to death. I have stood for your betrayal, Dumbledore, for your schemes and your secrets, and now the time has come for me to play my final part. For the love of all that is holy, let me go in peace. I will bear your message to Potter, but I insist you get out of my sight.”“Where would you have me go?” Dumbledore was pale, but his eyes twinkled as if the two of them were sharing a long-agreed upon game. “Into any portrait fool enough to have you. If you hurry, perhaps you can get good seats for the battle,” Snape said bitterly. “Goodbye, Dumbledore.”I also like the way you wrote Aberforth in the story. He knows his brother well: “I knew my brother, Potter. He learned secrecy at our mother’s knee. Secrets and lies, that’s how we grew up, and Albus… he was a natural.” I could feel there was some bitterness between them. And Luna! What can I say about our Luna? She is always there with the right answer when it's really needed! So often she is thought of as "loony" and "not really there," but I always thought she had the pulse of whatever was going on.Thank you for allowing the reader to experience Severus' memories of Hogwarts as he flew away in answer to the Dark Lord's summons. We see through his own eyes the wonder he felt when he first learned to charm a feather to fly. We see him as a typical teenager playing pranks as he set off dung bombs in the Arithmancy corridor. And I have the feeling that he would have thought the three weeks of scrubbing floors was worth every minute of detention! We see his recalling Hermione sitting near the lake. And we witness his sadness at leaving the only real home he has ever known, certain that he would never return, never see his wife again. It is all so bittersweet. You made me cry ... again.1000 Points to Lariope! What a masterpiece you have written!Beth

Beth, I'm simply staggered by the depth and feeling of this review, and I thank you truly from the bottom of my heart.I can answer some of your questions but not all. ;)As for what Voldy put in Snape's arm, it is absolutely not a Horcrux, as that would have required him to kill and split his soul another time. I'm afraid that what he put in should simply be taken at face value: the gift of flight, however illbegotten. The story, for the most part, has tried to follow the main events of canon, and that will continue through the final chapters of DH--you will, as in Gringotts, see canon events, but twisted or changed either in their rendering or their outcomes. I'm glad you were pleased to see Snape tell off DD--you can't imagine the joy I took in writing it. ;)And I am glad that you liked Luna and Aberforth in this chapter--the minor characters are truly a pleasure to write, and I'm glad they ring accurately in the story. Thank you so much, Beth! Lots of love!

How exciting. I can't say that I cared much for the characters when I read these chapters in DH, but the spin you put on the story makes me feel for them and hope for the best.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Which characters? Our trio?I am glad to hear that you are feeling for them--thank you very much!
Response from veradee (Reviewer)
I should have been clearer. I meant all the characters - Snape and Hermione are a given, but also the many supporting ones, like Neville, Minerva McGonagall. etc.

I'm breathless, can't wait to read the next chapter, dear! Neville is my favorite character in this chapter, besides Severus of course. I love that he has come so far, from the bumbling, clumsy first year to this determined young man who has done so much for the resistance, tapped into his hidden stores of Gryffindor strength and courage. He rocks. I also found Minerva's part in this chapter to be very endearing. I'm so glad you let her ally herself to Severus, I think her help would mean so much to him, since he's known her since he was a child himself. Thank you for this chapter, and I check my email obsessively for the next update notifaction, hehe. :) *hugs*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I love Neville quite a bit, too, and I loved the change in him in DH. I'm glad you liked him here. And yes, the Snape/Minerva friendship, particularly the length of it and the different incarnations of it are fascinating to me. I could write pages and pages of dialogue between the two of them!I'm so glad you liked the chapter and are anticipating the next! I'm very much looking forward to the Shrieking Shack, though maybe I will be changing my tune by the end of this weekend. Often it is the chapters that I have huge outlines for that balk at being written. ;) I've been working all week, but I haven't gotten to that scene yet. More soon! Thank yo so much for reviewing!

One of the best fanfics I have ever read. You have woven a truly tragic tale (regardless of ending) - using Rowling's "simple" framework - creating meaning and inspiring pathos far beyond Rowling's original text. Particularily it is your way with words and characters that truly strengthen and give this story life. Ultimately, I've always been partial for reading a self-realized Snape, so perhaps my response is biased, but I could only hope to emmulate such a characterization, which you've wonderfully portrayed. I began reading this half-way-through (I shamefully admit); I am excited to return to the beginning and read this story as it was meant to be read, while awaiting the next update.

,Thank you so much. That really means a great deal to me. I can't imagine picking up the story half way through! But to be honest, I kind of dread your going back to the beginning. Many of my favorite scenes are there, but at the same time, my writing has changed enormously over the last six months, which, I guess, is what writing 1000 words a day for nearly 200 days will do to you. :)I'm very glad that you can relate to my characterization of Snape. Somehow, he has grown to be the emotional center of SL, and I'm very happy that you find him compelling. Thank you so much for such a lovely review!

I always wondered how Severus learned to fly. You have so often either written the scenes that needed to be in DH, or written the ones that were in a way that is more plausible and satisfying - thank you. Though both versions make me cry...
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, I've cried a great deal over both as well. Thank you so much,

. I'm really glad you liked the flying. It was something that just wouldn't get out of my head. I cut it from the outline, and then, once I had written, I could just feel the empty spot where it was supposed to be, so I put it back in. I'm happy that it worked for you.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

That chapter was as beautiful as anything I have ever read! Simply breathtaking! Again. The depth and life you have infused into this oh-so-familiar story vastly supercedes the original! You never fail to add dimension and a pounding pulse to every character you touch! Just incredible! I remain in awe.

Thank you so much. One of my greatest pleasures in writing SL has been getting to write so many secondary characters--you know, I think I've spent more time in some of their voices even than in Harry's or Ron's! And I love the feeling of entering someone else's mind, of trying to speak with their mouth. I'm so glad you are enjoying it. Thank you for reviewing!

Yay! Another great chapter. And you've given more believability and depth to Harry and Ginny's relationship.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
If I weren't an SS/HG shipper, I'd be a Harry/Ginny shipper. I know tons of sshg fans don't love the hp/gw relationship, but I do. To me, Harry and Ginny just belong together. So I'm delighted to hear that you believed in their relationship. Thank you!

I really hope you let Snape live or else I might not talk to you any more . . .Actually, if you're not going to, contact me privately and let me know. I nearly lost my job last year I was so completely hysterical over how Snape had died. I do not think I can live through that twice.

This is masterful. After your tale is finished, I may just have to read Deathly Hallows again. But this time I'll be inserting your dialogue and storyline at the appropriate spots.

This story has me hooked! It's so much better than DH (I hate that book)! It's interesting because you keep some things stright from canon, while you alter some others, but in the end everything feels smooth and real.I'm happy you hinted that some of the Slytherins will battle, and I'm happy that Minerva discovered the truth about Snape: in DH it pained me to see her so blind and spiteful. Instead I'm a bit disappointed that, against canon, you made the Malfoy bad to the core: the fact that they were, indeed, somehow decent human beings was one of the few things I liked from the book, but well, it's simply normal that we all have different points of view =)And the chapter were Sevberus and Hermione made love for the second time...well, that's one of the most beautiful things I've ever read in the fandom. It moved me a lot.I can't wait for the next chapter! Excellent job Lariope!

! I couldn't leave the Slytherins out of the battle. That was just pure discrimination on JKR's part, I thought. Besides, our hero, the bravest man we've ever known is a Slytherin!I'm sorry about the Malfoys. I'm really... not too fond of the Malfoys. Though some fanfic Draco has me warming to his character. :)And thank you so much about chapter 15. I'm glad you liked it. More soon, and thank you for reviewing!

So often during my reading of the books i'd think, "How'd they do that?" And so many times in Second Life, you've answered. I loved the flight scene: Severus' ambivalence about aquiring some of Voldemort's magic, the beauty of his flight, it was all so well-described. I also liked the shifts in perspective in this chapter. The way you slipped between Hermione and Severus really did justice to the action that was occurring. And I liked Severus and Minerva's grim collusion. Oh, hell, I liked it all. You have me on the absolute edge of my seat.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yay! I'm glad you liked it. I wish I could have written more Snape and Minerva--I really like the structured playfulness of their friendship. Thank you so much, Emmeline. You know how much I admire your work, so this means a lot to me. :)

A Snape who can fly hummmmm now there is some fancy pants magic. This (word the describes the build up to the climax in a story) is quite intense. I find myself cheering out loud at times as I read. Clearly I have gone a bit crazy. Please say the next chapter will be posted in seconds. I have to know what happens! I have to! PROMISE me you will not kill HG or SS? Can you?

I am more jazzed up to write than I have been in months; of course, I also have less free time. But I almost ALWAYS post by Wednesday night, so it won't be more than a week. Fancy Pants Magic. hehehehe. Thank you for reviewing. Answer to be in your mailbox. ;)

I absolutely adore this story. It constantly has me on the edge of my seat. The full exposure of Dumbledore's machinations just opens up every character, exposes their complexity, makes them so very human. My heart breaks for Severus.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you see them as human. Yes, poor Severus has been tortured beyond what most men could endure. I feel terrible for him as well.

Oh yes, the flying! I can understand Severus having pretty torn feelings about that ability - something so amazing, a real freedom, and yet at such a price... was handy for the escape though!Loved this whole chapter, as usual.
