Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
You've have taken the "marriage law" concept and reworked it beautifully. I really liked DH (for what it was; a book about Harry Potter) but you have done our potion master a much needed reprieve. Looking forward to his not untimely death and a "happily ever after".

Thank you! Really, I've just always liked the idea of writing a romance backward--of beginning with the wedding and ending with the falling in love. More soon! Thank you for reviewing! :)

Thankyou for another splendid chapter. Everyday when I get a notification of an update I hope it will be your story. I love this so much that I am thinking of printing, binding and placing it next to the other HP books - all 5 1/2. Well book 6 was OK, but I like your version better and the original book 7 - an abomination...scarred by THAT Epilogue I am. Keep up the wonderful writing.Cheers.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Hi Reets! Thank you! I'm so glad you're still enjoying it. But printing it? Seriously, it's long. :) But that you could even imagine it next to the others... that's the loveliest compliment I could recieve. Thank you. And I understand your scarring. It was not a good epilogue. (They often aren't). Stating for the record now that SL will have no epilogue. Thank you for reviewing!
Response from reets67 (Reviewer)
Yeah...Long...BUT with satisfying characterisations rather than caricatures (esp. Snape), an improved and shiny plot and NO Epilogue (Yay! *Jumps for joy*). Plus I gather from your fantastic writing so far we will not get an Epilogue-esque last chapter that only really reinforces the old predjudices (Ron re. Draco) and does not offer ANY insight into their lives apart from their kids. I mean Hermione...we all would have loved to know what career she settled on, in canon rather than JKRs musings in interviews. The plus on printing is that I do not need the internet to read it, and it is PAPER! Something so satisfying in one's hands that a computer screen cannot truly replace, just like the promise of new books at the start of a school year. Blimey I'm channelling Hermione now!Cheers.

Wonderful exciting chapter but you still made me cry when Snape was setting affairs in order and Dumbledore reminded him of his duty. Snape telling the old....... to give him peace was when the tears came. Please let Snape live and be happy, he deserves it. When I think you can't get any better , you do. 5 stars are to low to rate these latter chapters, you deserve at least 10 and by the end of this story it will be a galaxy of them. Many, many thanks again.( i know i keep ending with thanks which is not very orginal but it comes from my heart).
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear Portugal Faro, I'm sorry I made you cry. It makes me cry too, to think of him so determined and alone. I want only the best for him. What a lovely image, a little galaxy of stars for my brief time with these characters. That makes me cry a bit too.Thank you.And Thanks is the currency of the heart--that's why I end my responses with it too. Thank you, my friend, for such lovely reviews.

I really hope you let Snape live or else I might not talk to you any more . . .Actually, if you're not going to, contact me privately and let me know. I nearly lost my job last year I was so completely hysterical over how Snape had died. I do not think I can live through that twice.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
It was gut-wrenching, wasn't it? My husband likes to tell about me reading DH, curled around my book and sobbing over and over, "I'm sorry Professor Snape."Hrm. Thanks for reviewing!
Response from cmwinters (Reviewer)
It took me until the last page of the epilogue before I *really* realised he was dead and if anything I dislike it even more now than I did then. And given my six thousand plus word ranting of whangst and woe, that's saying quite a lot.The entire thing makes me physically ill, really. (look for a rant about this coming to a LiveJournal near you *cough*)

I like this chapter more and more. Than you for redeeming Ginny. Good to see her as something more than a submissive little thing with no will of her own. :-) And I can't wait for the next chapter! Loved your idea for the RoR!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
See, I've never understood the whole "leaving Ginny out of the final battle" thing. What? This is Ginny Weasley! Seventh magical child--supposed to have great power, plus tough enough to endure 6 brothers. I love Ginny. She's a fighter, for sure, and would never have stood for staying in the RoR!!/end rant. I'm glad you liked it! Thank you for reviewing!

I got the email that there was new chapter, opened it and found there were no reviews yet, went back to the previous chapter as I always to do to "read my way into" it, returned to this new one and there were 8 reviews, suddenly had to run out for the evening, and came back to, what is it now, 37 reviews? and find myself jealous of everyone who got to read it and react to it before me, but i also feel like I'm part of this very special group of readers who are being blessed with seeing greatness being born right in front of us.Another incredible, wonderful chapter, filled with marvelous details and blanks filled in gracefully that I didn't even realize were there. To find out how Severus learned to fly unaided (and at what cost?!), to hear much more of Aberforth's views of his brother (such great additions to that little piece of the saga!), to have Severus finally tell Dumbledore where to stick everything . . . .And to have him preparing so meticulously for the end just makes me weep. Your writing just gets better and better--so many lovely passages, including: You can’t trick people into loving each other---write that one out on a banner and smear it across Dumbeldore's portrait, because you also can't keep them from loving each other, even if it doesn't suit your nasty little plan. And the sequence where Severus flies out of Hogwarts, bidding each place a final farewell . . . just breathtaking. On the one hand, I am wildly excited to hear there are two more to go to finish DH (and you will finish it right this time!) and five more after that (and in your hands, five is a lot of wonderfulness to look forward, as you pack each chapter full!). On the other hand, my heart is breaking that this will ever end, and the descriptions from this chapter in particular seem to characterize my own conflicted feelings brilliantly. This is astonishing stuff. I don't know how you are managing it, but I simply have to believe that it is, as Severus says, magic.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
*HUGS*I'm really glad you liked this one. Yeah, the chapters do seem to be getting longer. Goodness. I'm a little worried about that :) But you're right, 5 chapters at this point is like 40,000 words! And I'm glad that's how you associated Ron's lin about tricking people, because, of course, that's how I meant it. And I'm happy for Ron that he knows that, that our bumbling Ron Weasley knows what love is better than Dumbledore. I'm glad you liked Aberforth. I was very struck by him in canon. It was my intention to leave him out entirely, but then circumstances kind of dragged him back in, and I was glad, because his was a voice I enjoyed using. *does the happy dance*Thank you so much for reviewing!

Loved Snape's POV when Voldemort is flying - both his terror and his awe. You have such a beautiful way of pulling us fully into the story. I really hate that we are drawing to the climax of the tale, because I don't want it to end.

I just love how you have explained Snape's ability to fly like Voldemort seemingly without a spell. Having a piece of Voldemort transferred inside him would be way cringe-worthy, but Voldemort's words were just as ominous.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, he was very ominous, wasn't he? I can't help but think he knew exactly why he was bestowing this particular 'gift' on Snape. Voldy is so gross to write. One of my favorite Voldy parts, actually, is in this chapter, where he admires Snape's Mark--I love writing this sort of deranged lunatic who insists on a particular set of manners...Anyway, sorry for rambling. I'm glad you liked it!
Response from CharmedForce (Reviewer)
Whenever I think of Voldemort, I can't help but think of "Honor among Thieves". Obviously, he doesn't have honor, but he relies on such specific manners and traditions and protocols that you can't help but draw that parallel. It's one of the reasons why I love Slytherin House: every one may be out for just themselves, but they also realize that every other Slytherin is thinking the same thing, so they can respect and understand that.

I can't wait for the next chapter! I have to say that I love how you've been through Severus's memories, and I LOVE Ron's "love and friendship" speech. It was so heartbreaking to see these final scenes from Deathly Hallows through Severus's eyes... looking forward to more!

ARGH! NOoooooo.... evil, evil cliffie! Can it be called a cliffie if I know what is happening!? "Waiting waiting... endless waiting for things (we can) not stop or control. It was maddening." Yes. Yes, it is maddening! Minerva kicks some serious booty here. Love that woman. Love you, too. Dang, It's like McDonalds. I'm lovin' it. Ok, that was bad. Really, really bad. Obliviate! Seriously though... I do love it! Can't wait for more. Yada yada.

Another excellent spin on canon! I loved Snape's speech to DD, and Im glad he had a bit of fun before the dreaded battle.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! Telling off DD (something that I've been talking about with my betas for almost 15 chapters now) was incredibly satisfying to write. :) I hope it was equally satisfying for Snape. :)Thank you so much for reviewing! xoxo

no no don't stop now!!!!!!!!! You have gotten way to good at leaving the story open. Please say that was not a piece of his soul that was placed in Severus's arm.
LOVED the chapter and very excited about the next ones to come.

Great chapter, Lariope. My heart was pounding again. I love that you let McGonagall in on the secret. She has earned the right to know as far as I'm concerned.Even though I know what is going to happen, when I read your version I am still on the edge of my seat.Keep 'em coming.

OMG!!! You have over 2000 reviews!!! What can I say that hasn't been said over and over??!!!This was a fabulous chapter. Your description of Severus flying over the grounds of Hogwarts was so beautiful and touching.I never thought I would say this, being a Dumbledore lover and all, but I absolutely loved how Snape finally told DD off! You're an amazing writer and I'm so very lucky to have 'met' you! xo

I reread your story from chapter one last week and I am glad I did as all my emotions are simmering on a low boil, now you turned the heat up! OK, I know the end is coming just please don't rush it. Happy that Snape got the opprotunity to tell off Dumbledore and Minerva knows his secret.
