Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Poor Hermione. Albus should be brought back and tried for all the crap he pulled. And poor Severus. Can we use Raid on Rita?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I know--I wish I COULD put Albus on trial... but that, perhaps is another story....Hmmm....:)Thank you for reviewing!

Eeek. What now?I think the mess they're in is believable, though, there'd be so much chaos after a conflict of that size.Poor Snape and Hermione. They've got serious crossed wires at the moment. Hermione still thinks Snape resents her actions in the Shrieking Shack, and Snape thinks Hermione is only with him because she has nowhere else to go. I'm sure it'll all come right in the end, though. :)

Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
, both for your trust and for thinking that this scenario makes sense after the war. And yes, poor Snape and Hermione. I don't usually like to let them have crossed wires--to my mind, they're too close for that--but I think that that part of it, at least, will work itself out soon.Thank you for reviewing! xoxox

Ahh! Phineas!! Say it ain't so, you big poncey wanker! I'm so disappointed in you....<sigh> And Rita Skeeter needs to be accidentally squashed in a door or something, when in beetle form, of course.....<Hermione slams door--"oh OOPS!">One thing I really noticed in this chapter, and appreciated was that you don't remove the sense of menace and of feeling lost and afraid. Just because Moldy is gone and his followers are mostly rounded up, that does not mean that there is no longer any danger or anything to be afraid of. Hermione and Harry both have really turned into adults right before our eyes. I was so impressed with both of them in this chapter. But there are still things to be afraid of, to worry over, and that's life. There are no fairy tale endings, no happy-rainbows-and-ponies-and-sparkles glazing over the reality of a post-battle situation. People are people....it won't take much to upset this precarious balance once again. Whether it's dealing with other's perceptions (such as Mrs. Weasley's snubbing of Hermione at the Burrow) or dealing with the press at the Ministry, or having to, once again, dance that fine tightrope of political dealings, Hermione and Harry are realizing that life is not going to be perfect just because they won the war. And I think, in a way, you symbolized this with Hermione's appearance in this chapter. Sure she won, she defeated the greatest evil known to man, but look at her....she's dirty, she's bloody, she's tired and bruised and hurt. And it didn't magically all disappear when the evil was gone. Those hurts and pains are still there, still hurting.....I like that you haven't had her clean herself up yet. She could have scourgified herself in a minute, but i think maybe partly she doesn't want to, because it's like taking away some of the reality of what it truly cost them to win. And in a weird way, maybe she's even choosing not to clean up b/c of Fred...and Remus and Tonks and the rest. Not sure if any of this is making sense or not, and I could be way off with your intentions in writing her that way, but that's how i chose to interpret it anyway :P Other than the most obvious, literal reason: she's damn tired!! And much too cranky to care what she looks like at the moment! ;)Okay, so great job as usual. Really perfect cliffhanger...love that Kingsley looked almost "predatory." I've always pictured him a bit lion-like in my mind anyway! Can't wait for more.....mmmm more "Second Life"...hits the spot!! :)

Bwahahaha! You big poncey wanker! Oh, don't be too hard on Phineas, my dear. I think he was bragging about Slytherin contributions to the wrong person. Thank you so much for your comments about menace--I don't think that the end of Voldy brought the end of danger or the end of problems, either. I'm so glad you saw Harry as adult here. I thought, honestly, that he was kind of formidable--that he didn't just whinge and angst and take his ball home when Kingsley didn't immediately capitulate--he sat there as Harry Potter and demanded. I was kind of proud of him, to be honest. I'm so glad you liked it,

OMFG! I REALLY hate that Rita Skeeter! Ooh, I hope you have a very good plan for bringing her down!I cannot believe the evidence that exists from the Pensieve is in flux - who knows who has it, and who has seen it, or what will become of it?Surely, though, they'll be able to speak with Dumbledore at some point, or extract Hermione's (or even Snape's) memories to prove the truth? What an excellent update!!!

Yes, I'm pretty certain that both those things will happen in the next chapter--Dumbledore can't hide forever!Thank you so much,

Rita Skeeter, forever THE bitch. Lariope, I sincerely hope that somewhere along the line, Rita Skeeter gets what she so richly deserves — Azkaban perhaps? Among the Death Eaters imprisoned there? Or how about the rack? Finger nails torn out by the roots? Oh, lets just flay her alive and leave her to the ants.***Severus is so consumed with fear that he cannot allow one ounce of emotion to surface. He will not allow himself to voice any hope. He is still stung by the fact that he has survived and his plans for his own demise are in shambles. And, so, he adopts a smart-mouthed attitiude with the one person whom he loves, and who loves him, most in this world:“What is your plan?” he asked.“My plan?” “Your plan,” he said with exaggerated crispness. “You certainly seemed to have a plan for the end of the war. Now that things have sorted themselves out to your satisfaction, I assume there is some next step? Some further hoop the rest of us will be made to jump through?”I think he is so full of the fear of losing her through imprisonment, that he will not allow himself to feel close to her again:“Can I come back?”“I will set up a room for you.”Come on, Severus, what's all this s**t about? Surely he will come to his senses, let down his guard, and embrace her love.I can appreciate the difficult position in which all this has placed Kingsley, and I see that the offer he made to Severus and Hermione is the only one he could have made under the circumstances. But it sucks.Phineas Nigellus Black sucks, too!I wish I knew what has happened to the memories Severus left in the Pensieve; they may be critical in proving his innocence. Would one of the Aurors have destroyed them to prevent Snape's reputation from being cleared? And why did Arthur think that vanishing Severus' will would be a good idea? And what is Harry's plan? And where the hell is Dumbledore?I hope Kingsley will be able to accept Hermione's explanation about her marriage to Severus, that he will come to understand that they truly love one another.Great Lord, woman! This chapter has worn my a$$ out!!!Great writing, BTW. A thousand points to your House. This is seriously good stuff. And I write too much.Your faithful servant,Beth

Dear Beth,As usual, your review leaves me laughing and touched and excited. This makes me want to do a dance: I can appreciate the difficult position in which all this has placed Kingsley, and I see that the offer he made to Severus and Hermione is the only one he could have made under the circumstances. Oh, thank you! Thank you so much for thinking that! My betas were in total conflict about what Kingsley's deal meant, and I was very much hoping to see all points of view represented in the reviews. You will soon know about the Pensieve memories; I promise. And yes, to me, Severus and Hermione's relationship is very distressing. But I'm working on it!Thank you so much for your faithful and wonderful reading and reviewing! xoxox

No, dear Author... that's not very nice of you.Sigh. Reality strikes. I am very interested to see how you spin all of this.Kingsley will have to be very careful at this point once he understands all that has occured. Just as canon Harry realized that he couldn't expose Dumbledore for the things he'd done without exposing himself in the process - choosing to hold up the late Headmaster and Snape as icons, now Kingsley will have to choose. The wrong angle will blacken the Order and everyone affiliated with it in the end.Great update.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I think that's a very interesting parallel you draw between canon Harry and Kingsley. Snape, too, had to make that decision in SL when he left his memories for Harry--how much to reveal of DD's plans. And yes, tough choices, delicate choices for everyone involved. Thank you for reviewing! xoxo

Oh goodness what a kerfluffle. Hermione went in swords blazing but forgot to have a solid plan. Quite Gryffindor of her, really. I do hope everything gets sorted out for our heroes and quickly before Rita can muck up their public image any more. The pensive would indeed help clear things up, as would Albus poking his head out and telling everyone what's been going on. Ugh Headmaster Black was just chomping at the bit to tell someone what he knew, wasn't he?! I particularly like how steely you've written Kingsley, he's been written much softer in some stories and I just don't think that would fly in the days after the battle. Someone with a backbone of steel needs to be appointed Minister, and I think you've pegged him very well. Since this is the first review I've posted since you've gotten back to posting, (and for that I apologize, loved the chapter oodles but last week was crazy with baby stuff and just didn't get a chance to review) I want to say that I missed your story-telling a great deal and I'm very happy to see you return to a normal schedule. I do hope you had a great time at Portus, it would have been so cool to attend, even though I am not a writer, just a reader and reviewer! :) Anyhow, even though I'm a bit late, welcome back!

AH! Yes! Very Gryffindor, indeed! I'm glad you saw that in her!!And thank you for your praise of Kingsley who is in a truly unenviable position, I think. Not just to have to take over the Wizarding World moments after the demise of Voldemort--but because, essentially, she has backed him to the wall by not giving him all the information he needs. Thank you for hanging in despite the long wait while I was gone! I'm so happy to be back. xoxox

Darn! did you have to end it there?Going back, I think it's quite interesting what you've done. We never saw what happened in the days following the Battle but I suspect it was a real circus, as described. Rita, how I love to hate that trouble-maker, surely wouldn't have wasted any time writing up such 'juicy', complicating stories. Overall, the story continues to be believable and well-written which keeps me, and in turn my friends, happy and productive. See, you're doing a bunch of people a great favor.Yes, I am in a chatty mood today but I'll relieve you of my presence for now.Keep the updates coming, please.

Thank you, real life!! And yes, I had to end it there. muhahahahaha.Thank you for giving so much thought to what I'm doing here--one of my major quibbles with DH was the fact that we jumped from the end of the war to "all was well" without ever getting to see the rebuilding of the Wizarding World or really any kind of resolution for the people we had loved for so long. So I'm trying to do a little of that before we say goodbye. I'm really glad you're still enjoying it! Thank you so much. More on Tuesday!

But will he listen?Of course, in the reality of the world, we are more concerned with the story than why anyone allowed a member of the press to enter the Headmaster's office. Can't wait to see what happens next.(loved the way you wrote Snape today!)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Once Kingsley removed the Headmaster, the office was open--anyone could go in there. That's how Mr Weasley got in, too. Honestly, I've always imagined that most people fled Hogwarts after the battle. And you shall soon see about Kingsley. So glad you liked Snape!Thank you for reviewing!

Oh dear, your portrayal of things happening at the Ministry feels extremely realistic and ties in with how I think the wizarding community would behave.Still it makes me furious. I feel so sorry for Severus and Hermione. Will Kingsley listen to her? Can't wait to see how this will go on!

Oh, my goodness. I started out writing something along the lines of "this actually made me feel ill," when I realized that might not be the best way to start out a positive review. But you've made the situation so vivid and the sense of unease and uncertainty so strong that it really did make my stomach twist up at the end. Probably one reason it's so upsetting is that I've rarely seen a hostile, suspicious Kingsley -- NOT pretty. It's also disquieting to see Hermione so off her game, although that is also believable given the situation you've set her in -- it's all or nothing now, and she's barely been able to squeeze a nap in since Voldemort was killed. Thanks for letting Ginny believe in her -- although what else is going on at the Burrow?

--thank you so much for your review. I'm sorry it made you feel sick, but I know just what you mean. I'm glad you described Hermione as off her game. I think she just hasn't found her footing yet--these are her first steps with her grown up shoes, in a way. And I do think it would take some adjustment, but I have every faith in her abilities. Kingsley seems to read differently to everyone, so I'm not making any definitive statements about him and his behavior yet! We'll just have to wait and see. Thank you so much, as always. xoxox

Oops. Hermione does have some explaining to do! I'd assume that even if Kingsley comes around to seeing things her way, public opinion will be harder to sway, especially as Rita got there first.Damn Phineas Nigellus! Didn't expect him to do something like that, especially so soon. Ah well. I am certainly hoping everything will work out, eventually.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You know, I'm not sure that Phineas Nigellus meant things the way they turned out. Rita Skeeter does have a tendency to use things to her own purposes. But damn him all the same, I agree. And though Rita Skeeter is a loathsome beetle who certainly did not make things easier for Snape and Hermione, I'm not sure public opinion wouldn't have been pretty hard to sway anyway. But then, I am a terrible pessimist where government and the public at large are concerned!Thank you so much for reviewing! xoxo

Okay so we just print off the first 40 odd chapters and get Kingsley to read them and then we are good to go? Actually as much as I disliked this chapter* it feels so realistic to me, I just want to cry. There were so many secrets and plots going on during the war. It cannot miraculously unfold into a magical utopia because Voldy is dead and Harry says Snape is a hero. Once again Hermione and Snape are little tiny fish swimming the wrong way against the ocean of public opinion.
*I dislike that its Hermione struggling to save Snape against all odds. Again. I dislike that Snape is convinced his trial will be lost. I dislike that Rita has not been smacked with a libel suit to shut her the hell up. You have written a very realistic chapter I just wish their reality didn’t have to be so menacing. I am a frail romantic little fangirl at heart. I bruise easily.
PS: I am highly suspect of Arthur vanishing the will. That does not strike me as a sage thing to do.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I understand your dislike, Molly. I do want to remind you that only four people that we know of at this point know that Snape is alive--so no one has had a chance to support him or Hermione yet. It's hard to be her at this point and to feel so alone, though, I know. It's still pretty early on. But I know things look bleak. I'm glad you thought it was realistic. That makes me really happy--in a sad way! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! xoxox

If Severus is innocent of any wrong-doing, he deserves to have his name cleared, so he can wear it proudly, and so Hermione doesn't have to be ashamed to be Madam Snape, not that she is stupid and would be. Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
If I didn't hate the beetle/jar storyline so much, I'd put her there this instant! And I agree that power is dangerous and warping--right from the start--but also that I think it's possible that Kingsley is doing the best he can with a bad job. We'll see!Thank you for reading and reviewing,

Death to Skeeter! Poor Hermione! And it seems like Severus is too depressed/resigned to things to consider that there may be possibilities (whether there are any or not) so she's having to do what she can without even anyone (him) to advise her. Too bad you can't kill someone who is already dead! Really wish to inflict some pain on that former Headmaster right now! This puts Kingsley, and any deals she tries to make with him into an awkward position... Love this fic! Can't wait to read some more!

Death to Skeeter (and all those like her), indeed! I think Severus is just retreating now, as probably anyone would. I feel dreadful for him, and yes, even worse for Hermione who is left without him when she needs him most. And I agree--I still want to kill Dumbledore. When is MY chance???Thank you for seeing Kingsley's bad position. More soon! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

I guess I should have said 'former Headmasters' ...wanting to hurt Dumbledore goes without question after DH, but I was thinking of Headmaster Black... Yes, he's always been a git (to put it kindly) but if he hadn't spoken up to Skeeter, (in his oh, so charming manner) there would've been a lot less damage control for Kingsley to do in regards to Severus and Hermione.

You keep making me weep, this story is so good, and your writing of it is even better! This is, all too unfortunately, exactly what might have happened, knowing bureaucracies, knowing the media, knowing the way people react after the end of a long and terrifying war. So glad that Arthur got to the will before Rita Fucking Skeeter did--but who else saw it before he retrieved it? And damn and blast Phinneus Nigellus Black! And where, oh where is dear, sweet, treacherous, conniving Albus in all this? This is exactly how I can see Hermione reacting--feeling as though she has no plan, no guidance, and no way out. She is right in her realization that, if they do not face it and find a way to resolve it, she will never get him back. She saved his body, but his mind, his heart, his soul still need to be restored. And Snape's reaction seems spot on, too--that kind of bleak pragmatism, expecting nothing, even from the woman he loves. He is at greater risk than he ever was right now, and they have a long and dangerous road ahead.Which I am dreadfully anxious to travel with them, with you, Oh Astonishing One, as our guide!~screams~ ~weeps~ ~gnashes teeth~(All great and flattering reactions, by the way!)

I'm so glad that you see this as a real possiblity,

. Thank you! To me, this was the only possible outcome of a war that Snape survived, and while I hate to do it (really, honestly, I do hate it) it has been in the outline from absolutely day one. Albus to come, of course. Dear, dear Albus.I'm very happy that Snape seemed right to you. It's hard to be inside his bleak and blank mind right now.Thank you so much, my friend. xoxox

Thank you so much for the update. I guess it so far has gone as well as expected, though I have several issues (as usual:-)) First of all I am so dissepointed of Kingsley, I could cry. I have liked to think of him as a man of strength and integrity, a man who knows what is rigth and what is wrong. While I can understand that he has to give the press something, I find that he sells him self as cheap to the public as Fugde did in his time; Better placate the press than to stand up for what is rigth. It has been twentyfour hours, what he should have told the press is that it takes more than that to clean up the mess Voldidorks and his followers made, and that the press should show more respect for the people who actually fougth for what was rigth than this. Most of the press couldn't write fast enough in their attempt to satisfy Voldidork, if they did so because they were afraid of their own lifes or that of their family, they should rather stribe to expose the lies and crimes of the previous regime to atone for their actions than act like this. Rita Skeeter should be in cell awaiting transport to Azkaban, not getting headlines. What irked me most of all was his worry about the "prominent" familys that avaited trials. He should be a whole lot more worried about the guilty getting their punishment and the innocent set free than about how wealthy his "guest" are. Again, it remains me awfully much about Fugde, it looks like the Malfoys and the other croonies just have to take a little dip into their vaults and make some well placed donations towards the Ministry and Kingsley and their reputation well be "spotless" as usual, I admit to be very dissepointed. If this is the pattern and strength of the "new" gouvernment, I wonder what they fougth for? There will be no change, other than in the name of the Minister, and the next Dark Lord will have and even easier job than Voldibutt. All the deaths will be just meaningless, they died for nothing and Kingsley, along with Dumbledort are a disgrace against everyone who ever fougth for justice and freedom. Nigellus is a bastard too, but he is a Black so I guess one should not be surpriced. Did he forgot to mention, or did Rita forget to write, that it was Dumbledort who married Severus and Hermione? Update again soon, but please, could there be some justice, rigth now I want to throw Kingsley into a cell along with Rita and give the "outstanding" press a dressing down that would shake the fondation of the Wizarding World! (Ginny and Harry get top marks though, especially Ginny, I liked her!)

. I do love your reviews for they give me so much to think about.I think Kingsley's comment about "prominent" families is sinister in a different way. I don't think he's interested in bribes--I think he's interested in showing that they got "the REALLY bad guys." Most people who are in pain, I think, want someone to blame, want a face to put on that pain that they can attack. And I think he is wanting to give that to a grieving world, though I think it is in no one's real interest to do so. And I worry, of course, that Snape's will be a face attached to that idea. I think Kingsley is better than Fudge, but that it will take time for him to work out how to do this job properly. But honestly, in DH, I saw no indication that the world did change after the fall of Voldemort. In the infamous epilogue, we see that there are still house elves, that Wizards still underestimate and manipulate Muggles, that the house system (a deeply prejudiced and evil system IMHO) is still in place, and that people haven't really forgiven each other for much. There's still that focus on pureblood vs. muggleborn that we see in Ron's interaction with his kids. I hope for a slightly more hopeful world when SL is done. Or at least the glimmer of one, the hope that there might be one. I think we will hear more in the future about what Phineas Nigellus actually said... Sorry for this really long response. I'm glad you liked Ginny and Harry!! Thank you so much for reviewing! xxox

Grumpingly twisting in my chair, I will give Kingsley another chance... (In a perfect world there would be a tivoli in town where the visitors would win a big teddybear if they manage to hit Dumbledort, Voldidork, Skeeter or Umbrigde with 5 rotten tomatoes or 3 rotten eggs). And, I do agree with you, In DH's epilogue there was a sore lack of justice, but that is one of the reasons for why we hate it so much. You forget one important thing though; While JKR wrote DH with the worlds most rotten epilogue, we have you.....:-)) Lariope is writing SL, and has so far managed to do a job that should make JKR weep in envy. "Unluckely" for you, your magnificient job so far also raise expectations of you being able to fix absolutely everything:-)))
