Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
He's not going to make it any easier on her, is he? It's starting to concern me a bit, because even if he eventually is granted aquital, he may end up doing more damage to Hermione and their relationship than faceless vultures that are the public-at-large.Someone needs to get through to him that his actions are doing the young woman harm. I can understand his not wanting to provide a false sense of hope, but she still needs love to sustain her. Not shaking her off or taking his hand back is a start, but he needs to get it that she can't continue to thrive on such tiny morsels.Once again, you've managed to express everything quite vividly. Nice work. Looking forward to more.*stands in a corner, jumps up and down**pouts**WANTS MORE*Ignore me, I can be a bit juvenile at times. *grins*

I agree that she needs to crack him. It's time. And I think she's willing to begin telling him what she needs him to do. Asking him not to be cruel to Arthur Weasley was a start--to my mind, it was the first time she's directly asked him for anything since the end of the war. *sees you jumping**returns to writing**grins*

Stubborn man! Again, he needs to let Hermione love him. Self punishment is one thing, but sometimes I feel like he would quite happily kill himself, if there was a way to bring himself back just to do it again.I'm glad Hermione can be just as stubborn.I look forward to your next update!

Thank you! Yes, I know what you mean about Snape. I think he hates the situation more than he hates himself now, but it's a close call. And yes, Hermione is such a stubbon Gryffindor!Thank you for reviewing, my dear! xoxox

This is incredibly painful.
I can't believe how you have maintained such an extraordinarily high standard in this story. Such consistency is breathtaking.
Brilliant work.

I love these little glimpses of intimacy between Snape and Hermione. It seems each time they become ever-so-slightly closer. Or maybe Hermione is just being relentless in her attempts to chip away at his armor and eventually the poor man just has to give her another inch. LOLI love the suspense of the trial and Snape's stoic form during questioning. The way you describe his attempts at 'blankness' makes the reader (or at least me) almost able to feel that attempt to block everything out. Very well written. And I especially like that you don't feel the need to over-describe the 'sensation' to make the point, it comes naturally from the words you've chosen without feeling like: 'yeah, yeah... yada, yada... I got it.' - if you know what I mean by that. lolExcellent as always.

! And I'm very glad that you don't think I'm overdoing the description through the trial. It's very bare, but he doesn't want to take in much, that's certain. And I completely agree with (both aspects of) your characterization of the ss/hg relationship right now! She's relentless and he has to give in, but they both feel so much better when that happens that I think there is a tiny bit of healing between them each time.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

What a tough situation for them to be in. There don't seem to be any easy answers. I love your story and can't wait to read more.

As usual, Lariope, you have exhibited a rare talent for cutting straight to the heart of the matter with a few carefully selected words. There were so many poignant lines in this story, but I wanted to point out the following three sentences:She had given him something no one else could have, and no one else could take away. Hermione took Snape’s left arm and Shacklebolt his right, and between them, they did for him what he had done for himself since he was seventeen years old. Watching this was like watching them cut him open and hold his heart up to the light. You write with the precision of a surgeon. Your prose is an absolute joy to read.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You have brought a huge smile to my face, Emmeline. Thank you. I love when you pick out lines that felt good to write. It's like pitching, and finding the ball expertly caught. You rule. xoxoxox

Goodness! This trial is already heartwrenching, and I think Rita Skeeter should be permanently muted. Fair punishment I think.

Lovely continuation. You are handling the court proceeding, which has been seen in all too many fanfics of this type/ place in the timeline, quite well. I really like how you're exploring how each of them views the giving up of privacy, and how they see the effect not only on themselves but on each other. As always, well done, and thanks for sharing this.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, god, I'm so glad I haven't been reading any trial!fic. When this is over, you'll have to point me. Thank you for your thoughtful reading about privacy--I think this is a very specific kind of torture for Snape, but deeply affecting to them both.Thank you!

I was steeled for this, because I knew you would have to wade through all the bitter ugliness to get vindication and redemption for Severus. But it's enough to give me shivers at the emptiness that's in his heart right now. I think he is doing this more for Hermione than for himself, also. I don't think he would care if he lived or died if not for her. Please, please get through this trial quickly, Severus and Hermione have suffered enough:)Magnificently written, though:){{hugs}}Fizzabella

As fast as I can, I promise. :) I don't want to write it anymore than you want to read it. It's like cutting out my own heart to hurt them so much. He's in there... he's just become much too good, over time, at squashing who he is to get through what he needs to do, and there's never been anyone who demanded that he stay present before. Thank you so much for reading, my dear. *hugs*

Wow. What truly amazing courtroom scenes! Poor Severus - things are not looking the best for him now, but I'd assume Kingsley would want to deal with the worst evidence to start with and then dedicate the rest of the trial to anything more positive, winning the Wizengamot (and the public opinion - although that would be hard) over gradually? We'll see, in any case, I expect!Hermione continues being wonderfully strong. I do hope that Severus will realise it at some point and respond as I can't imagine even Hermione managing to keep up the spirit and the strength for the two of them indefinitely. But obviously it would be too much to ask of him at this point - all this must be incredibly hard for him. I'm just glad he is fighting, instead of choosing what would perhaps be the easier way, just giving in to the guilt and opt for Azkaban for life.~Kribu

Oh, I so want to tell you all about how I've structured the trial! But I shall be quiet. No spoiling, Lariope!I agree that it is time for Severus to crack, if only for her, if only a little bit. And I'm glad you see some fight in him. I do, too. Thank you, Kribu! xoxox

LOL! No spoiling needed, I just like to hypothesize "out loud" sometimes! I might be totally off with everything - that's half the fun really. I will have patience to see what's coming up. ;-)

They sure are skinning him alive. But the good thing is that he is actually responsive to Hermione. I held my breath when she had caught his hand, and it was limp. Somehow, I believe that he will come out of his post-death shell in this trial. Maybe, just maybe, having his innermost secrets exposed would awaken his will to live. And share his life with a wife.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
yes, that's exactly what they're doing. I couldn't have said it better. But the man with the knife in his hand knows where he's going, and like Hermione, I just have to keep believing that. And it's true, you're right. Maybe being forced to give up a little of what eats him on the inside will be a good thing.Thank you for reading and reviewing,

That was again such a beautiful chapter!!!! I had been checking every day since Tuesday whether the next chapter had already gone into the queue, of course it went up while I was busy working....You portray everybody so well, I'm constantly thinking "Yes, that's exactly what s/he would do in that situation!". I can't wait for more dateils from the trial, but if we get such a positively huge chapter again, I'd be willing to wait a few more days again. You just made my day!!gab
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I know. I'm going to have to stop promising Tuesdays, because with Summer school, I can't keep my promises. I will just say that I'm going as fast as I can. :) And I do think the chapters will be longish, as I don't want to keep us in this part of the story for too long.I'm so glad that my characterization is still working for you! Thank you so much, Gab!

Dear frickin' god. I do not think I breathed during any moment of the courtroom scenes. Rendered impossibly vivid using mostly dialogue, I was as stunned and taut as Hermione.
I know, broken record, but I have to believe that you live in Snape's head, know what he is thinking. Why he does each thing, how he will react to each thing.
And he's a stubborn damned git. But it's all getting to be too much. I sense the pressure of the ocean behind that wall of his. I wonder what will tip the balance. He must break. It would be unhuman not to.
Author's Response: Oh, yes, I do think the break is coming. At least in a different way than he already has.
Thank you, Lulabelle. I'm glad you are still on board with the way my Snape thinks. It's awfully strange to share your head with a bitter, snarky dude. lol!
I'm glad you thought the dialogue worked. I was scared!

That was the best thing she could have done. She needed to listen to the silence of her husband. For a man like Snape, her silence and presence at his side, refusing to leave him when he felt as you said so disgusting, was very important. I hope this will be a life-changing event in his mind.Wonderful courtroom scene!Livvy

I agree! I read this incredible LJ post by drinkingcocoa the other day about how Hermione and Snape work because Hermione is this young radical who knows what she thinks is right and will not hear any objections and ploughs ahead despite red tape--and it made me think of her here--that she will not listen to what he says he wants, she simply knows what she thinks he needs and is determined to give it to him. Thank you, Livvy!

Wow, they're going through so much more pain, even though the war is ended. Thank you for continuing to post - I really want to find out that they come out the other side. Great court room drama combined with domestic drama.

Kind of a sad chapter, the trial doesn't look as good for Severus as I had hoped, but it is still early in the game.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You're right; it's very early in the game.I've been very careful in outlining the trial, and each day has a goal--certain charges and certain defenses. Kingsley will get his feet under him. Just you wait. :)But just so you're not too worried that I'll drag this out forever, the outline shows two more chapters of trial. Then we're done with that part. Thank you for reading,

Mia! You have no idea how happy that makes me. Thank you! Some chapters are easier than others. I'm pretty excited about the next one, but sometimes the ones that seem like they're going to be the most fun turn out to be hard. We'll see. Thank you!

"Future Chapters"---with an "s"---concerning the Wizengamot and trial law? So this trial will go on through _several_ chapters? I may die before this is over. My heart is aching right along with Hermione's and Severus'. And the most poignant line of all was Hermione's anguished thought, "Watching this was like watching them cut him open and hold his heart up to the light. She had never hated herself more in her life."It's magnificent, Lariope, as per your usual, but please have mercy and either combine the trial chapters or give us some glimmers of hope! I am so longing to see them come out the other side of this, with enough left intact of their hearts, their souls, and their marriage, to have indeed some true hope of a "second life" together!

, I know my poor readers are jumping ship left and right here. I know this is hard to read. But there will be at least two more chapters with the trial in them. I can't change that, much as I might like to. We've come this far and I can't back out now! Hopefully there will be something good to balance it against in the next one, but I'm not going to say too much about that. I know it hurts! When SL is over, I plan to do one of those post fic reflections on LJ, and you can hear all about the nervous breakdown I had when I realized exactly how horrible this section of the story would be. And maybe I am weird, but I thought this was such a hopeful chapter! I was so proud of myself! Look! Hope! They're talking and touching each other again! Hermione's beginning to fight back!Oh, well. :) I have my orders: less angst, more porn. lol.I promise that you will see them come out on the other side. I promise, promise, promise. Thank you for reviewing!
Response from countrymouse (Reviewer)
Oh please don't ever think I'd jump ship! I'm with you all the way through this storm! It's just that I don't handle seasickness well---some dramamine would be great (maybe not 'exactly' in the form of porn, but of _something_ that speaks to Severus' perhaps thinking that he _may_ actually have a chance, for a life, and for love with Hermione.) I realize he thinks he will lose both his life and her, and is having to face the ultimate humiliation of having his heart pulled out into the open and examined under a microscope--gods forbid! I agree with Hermione that that would destroy him. I see Hermione having hope--she's never given up hope and won't---but I wish Severus could show some spark of dawning afraid-to-be-but-there-anyway joy that he may actually HAVE a chance. But don't worry---I'll be here, even if I have to go on copious amounts of "something" to bring me up out of the pits of angst after every chapter till we come out into the light again.Keep writing---hurry with the next! :-)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dramamine sounds way too much like Dramione. I don't know why I'm feeling so silly today :)And I was joking about the porn, of course, just more evidence of my silly mood. AnnieTalbot signed a postcard to me from Terminus and that's what she wrote, and I've been giggling over it for days. Now I will be serious: I know what you're saying, and I hope that I'm able to give it to you something like it in the next chapter. I can do a show of fireworks, but it will take longer for the reality to set in for a man like Snape, I think. Hermione can make the point, and he can even bring himself to accept it, but I think it will take time for him to believe in it--do you know what I mean? Back to the writing! xoxox

This is a wonderful story and a very, very well-written chapter. But it was painful to read.

I think there's some broken angstometer inside me. :) I'm sorry that you found it painful. This is a painful part of the story, and I know that. I hope you will find the ending worth the pain of getting there. As I wrote this, it was the hope that stood out to me the most clearly. I've carried the image of her hand in his as that door opened for 40 chapters. That's what I see in my heart when I write this. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxox

Wow. Well, I know this isn't quite finished, but at this point, it seems ... well, not convincing enough to acquit? I'm sure more is coming, and his later actions will come to light that he truly was working for the side of the Light.Hermione's strength is inspriring ... let's hope Severus sees it that way. He was there for her, and now their roles are reversed, and I hope he recognises that. One other thing:"I knew that [Lily Potter] would not allow her husband and son to die with a fight.”Shouldn't that be "... would not allow her husband and son to die without a fight"?Brilliant, as usual!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Lyn_f. I'm always amazed at what can slip through. I'm going after it now. :)And you're right--we're far, far from any defense structured enough to bring an acquittal... but bear with me. Kingsley and Hermione are tough cookies. :)I'm glad you see role reversal here--that's what's in my mind too. Thank you for reading and reviewing!

I feel for both our protagonists in this story. They are in a battle against the world and most of the time they feel as if they are fighting alone yet, they are battling the same enemy. Severus is afraid of relying too readily or heavily on Hermione's love because I think he is afraid that once she hears all he has done he will be abandoned. Likewise Hermione does not feel able to communicate her fears to Severus because he has so much of a burden already. My heart sings when we witness the little things that show they are still linked holding hands as they enter and exit the courtroom and her falling asleep on his shoulder. I have faith you will see them through all of this.

I do so love it when you're first. ;)Thank you, Irish. I worry for them both--they have lived under such strain for so long. And yet, I do think that underneath is such a solid foundation that it can't be subsumed for long. But maybe I'm just a terrible romantic! xoxox
