Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

You've done it Lariope! I now sympathize with his aloof distance. He is justified in wanting the entire wizarding world to know what he as gone through. The best paragraph for me was the one that started "Because he wanted them to have to know." Two thumbs up!

You can't imagine how thrilled I am to hear that. I'm so, so glad. Because I so much want you to feel where he is. Thank you so much!

I still want to see Hermione carried through the streets like a goddess! Its the least she deserves.

oh, honey. They are tearing him apart, piece by piece. How he must hate it! He must wish he were dead, rather than illuminated for all to see. It's so awful! And not just for him. Hermione feels every blow delivered to his body as if it were her own. How can he ever forgive her for witnessing him in such infamy and despair?*hugs you and whispers*I know it's tearing you apart, too.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
This made me cry a little. *whispers back*I don't want to hurt them. But it will be ok. I will just keep on knowing that.

He refuses to acknowledge her unless she forces it, but he clings to her presence anyway. He is so damn stubborn - you write him perfectly. Severus without his magic eviscerates me, because I know it eviscerates him. It's a physical pain to even think of it.You know I love the part where sleeps because she climbs into bed with him.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree--it's absolutely an abomination to imagine Severus without his magic.I am very honored by your review. I wish I could say it better, so that you would know.

Just read Elisabeth's review, which reminded me that I also really liked Severus' reasoning for pleading not guilty. It fits perfectly with his desire for Truth.BTW ... if there is to be a happy ending, will you please give us a chapter or two of them being happy together? Even an epilogue would be nice; I trust you not to write one like the one at the end of DH. I just want to see these two happy and enjoying life and each other. I'm not asking for an icky sugar fix -- which you couldn't do anyway, too much skill and taste. Something as subtle as the two of them sitting on the shore watching the stars as they did at the end of a chapter, only more prolonged. I want to read about their new life (which I hope you're going to give them). Finally, loved Severus' realization of what Hermione gave him. Now that's a relationship insight generalizeable to RL, that is.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I am frightened of your request, but I am keeping it in my heart to live with for a while. I would never leave you without some glimpse of what the after would be like, but I am wary of epilogues or epiloguey things. I have not had great success writing them. On the other hand, what is already in the notes may be what you are asking for. I am not sure, but your words are with me.
Response from RedRoo45 (Reviewer)
Oh Lariope, after I posted the review I realized I had violated my personal rule of not asking authors for specific plots (I figure authors have to do what their muse tells them to do and it's not fair to ask them to deviate). I'm so sorry I frigthened you! Believe me, it came out of a desire to see your versions of Severus and Hermione happy. They are such rich characters that I feel for them and yearn for their peace in a way I don't usually for fictional characters. Also I like their relationship and want to see what happens with it -- how do they deal with each other when the pressure is off (as I'm hoping it will be).Really, all I meant was that I hope the ending you have planned lets us see what their life is like After. I don't mean 19 years after (heh heh); I just mean that I hope you don't fade to black the instant the trial is over. But if that's the arc you have in mind, go for it: it's YOUR story! I also have more than a suspicion that I'm dreading the story being over and was simply hoping for it to go on ...I am awed that you manage to write so quickly, so well and so much while leading a RL. I've been struggling with a short essay (around 1500 words) all day (that is a part of my RL). Of course, part of the problem is that I have no idea what I'm saying; I usually do before I write. Ugh. got to go finish it; I'm expecting hate mail from the editor any minute.

Yow! This just get worse and worse! Wait a minute, let me rephrase that ... the ways in which Severus, Hermione and the wizarding world in general are dealing with the aftermath of the war and in particular Snape's trial are believable, well developed, and beautifully told, but are simply excruciating to read. I can't imagine how it must be to write ... but at least you know where it's all going. I hope that this is all works as a painful but necessary catharsis for Severus, enabling to move on with his life (perhaps in Australia or Thahiti or Bolivia or the North Pole) with Hermione by his side, their relationship out of the current tense and frozen estrangement and their love even stronger. I must say I'm a tad annoyed at Severus though. I am emphathizing with him like mad -- you convey his POV so clearly. But a teeny part of me says that if he really loved Hermione, he would be more generous to her. But I think he has to be true to who he is and to deal with all this almost has to put her aside. I do hope that he realizes at some point what she is doing for him out of love -- knowing it could backfire terribly. Yes, she's doing it for herself, but also for him -- she knows it could all go pear shaped (a British expression I've grown to like from reading fan fic).I loved what you wrote about Severus loving truth. I like it as a characterization of him and as a statement in general.I didn't realize you'd be giving us so very much after canon was over with!Great work.RedRooPS Wizengamot stuff was very well done (charges, procedures and so on). No worries there.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you about the Wizengamot, first off. JKR's Wizengamot had few rules, and that makes it almost harder to work with. And I know what you mean about Severus. He takes his time, that's for certain. And 'going pear shaped' is one of my favorite British expressions as well. :)Ah, Snape and Hermione in the North Pole... perhaps my next endeavor. :)Thank you for your thoughtful review, RedRoo. xoxoxo Lariope

Positively heart-wrenching! You amaze me with every chapter, Lariope. I cannot possibly say any more to describe what this story has caused me to feel, or how much I love this story.I'm all caught up now, and once again anxiously waiting for more!

He is so damned stubborn! But he wouldn't be Severus without that stubborn streak. How you ended this chapter couldn't have been any more perfect!

CHRIST this is worse than the OJ trials! All the sensationalism and people's twisty little private lives being judged by the general public. I am torn between who I feel more sympathy for Snape or Hermione? Hermione because she has to put him through this for his own damn good/freedom or Snape because Mr. Private has to tell all his secrets. At the very least thank you for letting them walk hand in hand into the court room. PS: Is Snape steal cars a not to BCOF's Seven Preposterous Things?

Heartbreaking and moving! I would need a thesaurus to come up with all of the wonderful adjectives I could attribute to this fic! Severus' grief was positively palpable; Mr. Weasley's advice was very touching; Hermione's numbness very believable. Excellent job... And now, the next chapter!

*sniffles* Well, I certainly hadn't expected Severus to be pleased with Hermione using the potion on him. Gah! I hadn't expected to be so completely moved, though I should have! I love how Harry and Ron found about about Hermione and Snape, and how they accepted it and helped her get to him. I loved every little bit of it!Moving on to the next chapter now!

Wow! I'm baaaack! Sorry for taking an unapproved hiatus from reading ;-)This chapter showcased your brilliance just as stunningly, if not more so, as your usual brilliance. I absolutely loved the changes you made to the events in Gringotts, while still incorporating the same characters/creatures. I absolutely loved this chapter!Sorry this is so short, I'm anxious to get on the the next chapters!

This trial is what it must feel like to have Dementors about ... like every good feeling, every happy memory has been sucked out and they'll never be happy again. This was just that depressing. Poor Severus. Poor Hermione. And Lucius - revenge is more important than good hair! That's determination.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I am cracking up about your comments about Lucius. Is it obvious how much I HATE HIM??? Have I demeaned him enough yet? LOLYes, the trial is horrible. But we'll see more strategy from Kingsley as it goes on, and I hope that makes it feel a bit more purposeful and a bit less like the Dementor's kiss.xoxox
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
I was thinking that yours was probably a more realistic depiction of what Lucius would be like. -- The epitome of the self serving, sneaky, slippery Slytherin that he is. This is a man who lied his way out of trouble before and Kingsley should know not to trust him. -- Which leaves the door open for much more demeaning.

It's interesting how the trial is unfolding the way a lot of real-life trials do -- with a lot of patient fact-finding as a case is built up bit by bit. But I liked Snape's rationale -- that by pleading not guilty, he would force a tally of what the war and the spying actually cost him, and his fellow Order members would get the full picture. That's another bit of canon I wish I could have seen onstage!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm glad it makes sense to you and feels realish. The Wizengamot is hard to work with because so much of what they do is just whoever happens to be in charge's opinion. (What a clunky sentence!) And I'm glad you liked Snape's reasoning. Thank you!

This is heartbreaking and so very intense. It must be so hard for Severus to be going through all this and to have so much of his life exposed to the public. I feel sorry for him, but in a way I feel equally or even more sorry for Hermione. She shows such an incredible strength that it is very easy to forget how young and, despite the war and everything, vulnerable she still is. I very much look forward to the next chapter.

. I agree with you on both counts: for a man as private as Snape is and has had to be, this must feel like death. And for Hermione, this is just one more unbearable thing that she has been asked to bear. More soon, and thank you for reading and reviewing!

OMG... My heart is bleeding. This is beyond gut-wrencingly sad. I am so glad he has Hermione. I just hope he realizes how lucky he is to have her. If she did not love him so much he would probably have pled guilty and starved himself to death in Azkaban.I love that she holds his hand before they enter the court room. That tiny gesture speaks volumes.Great job as always, Lariope. I anxiously await the next chapter. :)
