Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Wonderful as always. I love the way you mixed the melancholy of the sentencing with the playfulness. Who would picture Severus being playful, but it seems to be working on pulling Hermione out of her shell. More touching. One thing “I haven’t done exasperating yet today.” shouldn't there be the word "anything" between done and exasperating?HugsIrish

I so enjoyed this chapter. It was refreshing to see Severus unwinding a bit, and his playfulness with Hermione was wonderful. It's sad that he can't tell her why he works so hard, and that she can't tell him why she's unhappy. As always, beautiful prose and perfect plot development.

Oh thank you for having Hermione finally grabbing him by the balls (metaphorically speaking, of course!) and giving it to him (you know what I mean!). I wanted her to slap him, honestly, his pity-party was infuriating me no end. And Kingley is one clever guy :-)

I love the line, "whatever it was that had brought them here abruptly changed into something else..." So good!Favorite, though, is, " Enough time to know that it did not matter whether if she could live with it or not, that she would not leave him."I'm so glad Snape let down his guard enough to let Hermione back in. That was a beautiful piece of writing there, and I particularly enjoyed his magic making an appearance! :)LOL@ Black's portrait complaining about traveling in the handbag. Just what I'd expect of him!Your portrayal of Luna was brilliant, as well. This story just keeps getting better and better!

Whew! I was worried that Severus would succeed at pushing Hermione away. Although I can see how hard it is for him being totally out of control and relient on Hermione for everything. That typically doesn't bode well thr the fragile male ego. To go from being one of the masterminds planning the destruction of the Dark Lord to to sitting chained and helpless before the Wizengamot explaining every action must be really humiliating. No wonder he wanted it all to end in the shack. Maybe he's not as powerless as he thinks if the night before is any indication, curious as to what that "power surge" was.I am not sure what Kingsley is doing, I worry that he will get caught up in the politics. However I keep reminding myself that throughout the dialogue he keeps telling Hermione to trust him. Great update.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Goodness, I was too! I know that sounds crazy, but he was very obstinate for me in this chapter! But I agree--and I've always seen their role-reversal in this section of the story as both terrible for him--because for him the world is all about control--and necessary, that they come together finally as equals, that they both shoulder the whole burden from time to time. I think as far as the "power surge" goes, that his own magic is very much still present, that the bracelet just masks it somehow. And I also think that there has been some level of magical exchange between them during the act of sex throughout the story. I will not say too much about Kingsley so as not to spoil, but I hope you will be satisfied. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing,

!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got back from a road trip, tucked those kids in bed, and hit the computer to get The Latest. !!!!!!!!!! I don't have the words anymore to tell you how much I'm enjoying your intricately-woven tale. "I'm enjoying it more than any other story I've ever read for free" seems like too much of a candle, when what's really appropriate is a firework. So, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're all well and it seems you are, too - cheers and hugs and thank you, so terribly, terribly much, for sharing this with us.Best,CB

Malcolm Yaxley, like Lucius Malfoy before him, was so proud of his loyalty to Voldemort and his cause, that his demeanor during questioning proclaimed that he was intent on making Severus Snape out to be an untrustworthy wizard whose roll as a spy should condemn him rather than exonerate him. Kingsley's questioning of Yaxley was brilliant. When Kingsley questioned Severus about the death of Charity Burbage, Severus was able to tell how his saving the Muggles Studies Professor would not have been possible under any circumstances, and would have eliminated his ability to spy on Voldemort for Dumbledore. When Kingsley appeared to accuse Severus of doing nothing to save Professor Burbage in order to save his own life, Dumbledore's portrait sprang to life with a vengeance, defending Severus with all his power! Dumbledore's questioning of Kingsley made it very clear that Severus could not have betrayed the Order's secrets because the Order had not shared the true date of Harry’s move with Snape! It came to light that it was Severus' idea to have seven Harry Potters that allowed Harry to escape unharmed.Next Kingsley's questioning of Severus about the information he had furnished to Voldemort led to the revelation that Severus had actually given the the Dark Lord erroneous information about the "deaths" of Hermione's parents. He had saved their lives instead of killing them as Voldemort had ordered him to do.We clearly see that Kingsley is building the case to exonerate Severus! And Hermione's presenting him with the official Ministry record of her marriage to Severus was the coup de gras! ---When our hero and heroine arrived home after a long day of questions and testimony, they experienced the most painful part of their journey so far. Severus would not allow himself to make love to Hermione because he would not tie her to himself. He felt that to do so would cause her irreparable harm.I think that Hermione's Gryffindor heart carried her through that painful night and led to Severus' finally giving into his need for his wife. He saw, without a doubt, that she was not pitying him, nor trying to control him. He came to understand that their love for each other was the only thing that mattered to her. And in giving into his passion for her, in making love to her, he discovered that his own magic was so powerful that the best and strongest deterrent that the Ministry could come up with could not stem his ability to do magic.Suffice it to say that the testimony of the portrait of Phineas Black and of Luna Lovegood made it plain that neither Hermione nor Severus had been forced into the marriage, and that Severus had cared deeply for her. For herself, Hermione made it perfectly clear to the court that she had no desire to have her marriage to Severus Snape "dissolved."And we are left with Tiberius Ogden demanding that Kingsley get on with questioning Severus about the murder of Albus Dumbledore.I have to tell you that what passed between Hermione and Severus in their home that night was so painful to read, but I was deliriously happy that Severus discovered that his love for Hermione made it impossible for anyone to take away his magic. In the middle of their love making he had told her “...Hermione, don’t let go,” he said. “Don’t let me go.”And then the light literally came on! Beautiful! Deep and abiding love is the strongest magic there is. Lovely chapter! You write so beautifully it brings tears to my eyes.Beth

It is a truly amazing thing to get to witness someone else's reading of your work. You give me the greatest gift every time, Beth. I wish I could let you into my brain to read this. It's like winning the lottery.Yes, you've nailed what I was aiming for in their dark night. You can't stop magic like that. It cannot be done. It's kind of a mirror of the Horcrux-locket chapters in my mind. You can't twist it; you can't break it, and whatever lies you tell will fall away in the light. Thank you, Beth. (Now we're both crying.) Love, Meg

Our snarky boy isn't quite back, but there's starting to be a resemblance to the Snape we know and love.So good to see that our very neurotic couple has allies. Shacklebolt, Luna, Nigellus, Dumbledore (who is finally doing something right), Harry, and I hope we'll see Minerva testify, too. This is such a wonderful story, I hate to see it come to an end.

Our snarky boy. That's so lovely. :) (He'd be so pissed!)And I'm very glad you see parts of him coming back, waking up. My husband actually said to me before I started writing this chapter that he wanted to see him "shield his face before he threw any punches," and that really stuck with me as I wrote this. Oh, yes, we'll see Minerva. :)Thank you,

Dun dun dun... lolI really enjoyed seeing the intense passion between Hermione and Severus. from the fight in the bathroom to him watching her in the courtroom it is obvious there has finally been a shift between them and he sees her as a person - probably the only person - on his side. I think knowing that she will defend him, or at least finally realizing such, has flared his intense passion for his wife. I mean that as in all his passion - not just in a bedroom way. It's nice to see.

Mr. Ogden is quite finished with all of the Ministers “setting of the stage” isn’t he? I realize Kingsley is setting things up, but I cannot help but thinking the longer he takes the more suffering Hermione & Snape have to go through. I am so ready for the happily ever after Lariope really I am. Heart, plants in flower, birds singing the whole deal.
Please explain the significance of Snape’s magic breaking through the bracelet. I hope after listening to Hermione’s testimony he can have faith in her faith. You leave me anxious for the next part as usual.

, you have no idea how ready I am for the happy ending either. Sometimes I feel as if I am nine months pregnant during the hottest month of summer. Get. It. Out.Don't worry; we're almost there. And I don't know if you were prepared to unlease the Lariope-verbosity, but here it goes. Regarding the significance of Snape's magic breaking through the bracelet: There has always been a kind of minor theme running through SL about the magic/power of sex, and it has tinged almost every encounter they've had in the bedroom, from bonding their marriage, to creating unintended Legilimancy, to saving him from that horrible catatonic state after Dumbledore's revelation. Here, I think, is just one more instance of that, but it's also meant to imply that the bracelet is just masking his magic somehow--that it's all still there, under the surface, much like the rest of him is. So there you go. Thank you for reading and reviewing, my friend! xoxox

Ooh, court room drama. It's like Perry Mason with a sexier cast and magic. I'm glad Sev hasn't exploded yet. It's kind of interesting to watch Kingsley's little game. I think he's using his inexperience as a cover to drag things out and make sure the jury hears what Sev needs for his defence. Of course, I could be wrong, the only way to be sure is more updates. Please. Awesome chappy.

Another beautifully written chapter. This one was less painful =) but the tension was so high that I think my blood pressure went up when I read it. Waiting on tenterhooks for the rest.

My God. You have no idea how hard it was for me to read this chapter, what with my eyes watering every second line. It is gut-wreching, it is. Finally, the long over-due confortation between Severus and Hermione, and it finally seems as if Hermione managed to breach some of the walls surrounding him. The love there! It is beautiful, truly amazing, and so very deep. And now I don't know whether to tell you to hurry up and get on with it, or to keep this going forever, it is so fabulous...
