Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Hey!I haven't finished reading this yet, as I will do so offline. Just wanted to say I'm loving it, though I was nervous at first when I realised that you were including bits of the real books and working around the original HP plot. But you have done an amazing job of it, and I havent felt the tedium of repitition once!! So Yay for you and this story! ^___^ Thanks heaps for writing it, I'm off to read the other half now!!

Hi,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
,I hope you enjoyed it! I was nervous too about exactly what you describe--the tedium of repetition--and I'm happy to hear that you felt it was new again. Thank you!xxooLariope
This is the first story i have read on this website and im amazed. The level and complexity of your writing is amazing. J K cant do much better. I loved your spin on the horcruxes and the deah of Albus, making all your extra scenes skillfully fit in with the original plot. I think i found your story through the rating, yours being on top. I can see why! i mainly read on fanfiction as i find it easy to use, doing what you know. Im terrible at finding my way round here. You have set such a high standard with this fic that it will be hard for others to compete. I want to thank you for an amazing read and scorn you as ive got very little of my own uni work done. Lol, is my own fault. I didnt even stop to review your other chapters to tell you what i specifically liked, which was wrong of me, sorry. But i can tell you, that every second i loved this story, never once bored and never once having an early night when i read it. The relationship between Severus and Hermione is the best ive ever read, and ive probablr read about 100 on fanfiction alone. Im not just saying it eitherm you are truely talented. Thanks again and again and again,Happy New Year

Thank you so much, Lotus Elise! I'm so flattered by your praise, and so glad that you enjoyed the story. That means a lot to me. And forgive me for taking so very long to respond. Happy New Year, belatedly. :)xoxo
I'm always sorry to see a great story end and truly yours was a story that I could have kept on reading forever. I suppose I'll just have to console myself with the next great thing you write! Thank you very much for such an enjoyable ride, I look forward to anything you write.

Wonderful chapter, very restrained writing but emotion pouring out of every sentence. They will save each other, that's what love does. I have no tears this time...thank you, just a great deal of hope. Manys thanks as always

This story has been such an amazing journey! I was struck early on by your devotion to the source material--it was really wonderful reliving the plot of DH with this extra layer of complication and emotion that you gave it. And now that we've gotten through the most frightening dramas, we get to see how Hermione and Severus move forward and try to get past these totally damaging events. You've constructed their relationship so carefully--it is so believable and fragile. I'm eager to see how the dust will settle... Thanks for writing such a great story!

I was surprised by Severus joking before they left for the verdict. At first I thought it was out of character but then I thought it was more likely he was relieved to be at the end. I had cried when Severus and Hermione embraced after the verdict. My romantic heart beat wildly for them. Having SS brew for St. Mungo as his community service is a great idea. I am tickled that he is over doing it and Mungos is accepting it and approving the expense associated with it. It’s a win-win situation.
Its ironic how their roles have reversed. Snape is “getting the job done” so to speak and Hermione is falling apart. Clearly the woman needs direction. I am surprised she never made plans for after Voldy. Oh I would be crawling the walls too if I were her. They could go out for a movie. People cant stare at him in the dark. What is he going to give her in January? Spill it sister!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I think that Snape, being such a fatalist, was able to step back a bit right before the end in a way that Hermione couldn't. And I think he saw she was struggling and tried to help, in his crazy-ass way. :)I'm really happy that you saw this chapter as a role-reversal, as I kind of see the whole story as a series of role-reversals. And you shall know the answer to your question soon, my dear! xoxoxo

Ok. I think that Hermione is wery lost in time and spays . After great relase of all charges for Severus minus comuniti work for St Mungo and that hart breathaking hught betwine them in the coartroom she lodt her self. He wont go out , he do his work rapydly, and she must have the filing like I do that nothing is change in better. I think that she will soon explode and have a breakdown . I hope that Severus will be there for her. Great work , great chapter , in next I hope it will be a litle more body conection for happy anding.

I agree with you, Lora. I think she's searching for a direction--her job was to get through the trial, and now that the trail is over, she has to sort herself out and decide what she wants. But I have faith in them. :)Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

Yay!!!My favorite line, I think, was, "Briefly he wondered if this was what marriage was, just saving each other over and over again." It's amazing that Hermione didn't have a complete breakdown at Spinner's End after the verdict was given, considering that at that moment her main task in life was to help Harry and Snape and now it's accomplished. I also wonder if she's been worrying that now that she has served her purpose, Snape will find he doesn't love her. But I'm so happy they're together and playing! *contented sigh*

Lovely chapter! One of my favorites! A Severus Snape I could quite possibly fall in love with -- not to mention, he has a magical toaster.
What more could I ask for?
And Barney? Just because it was a boy owl, I suppose, and you couldn't name it Becky?
LOL!!!! Fantastic, I loved every bit of it, and I even cried when they hugged after the verdict. That was pretty powerful. Actually, as a writer, I wiped away the tears and said, "Okay, now HOW did she do that?" Great work!
Today, I'll give you 4 stars, I think. Lack of smut, you know. *shakes head*
Author's Response: Indeed. I love him mostly for the toaster. :)
(Would you believe me if I told you that it took you pointing it out for me to realize where the toaster came from?)
Thank you, Becky. Next time, I'll name all the owls after you. :)
There are simply too many great things in this chapter to comment on them all. I love every detail, they make the reader look out upon the world as Hermione or Severus are at that moment, feel everything they are feeling, experience life as them. I feel like they are slowly coming back to each other, but need a push. The void that the end of the war has left is hard to get past, to find normal in, but the fact that they are together will be the prevailing factor. They can do it, together. Love it, Lariope. You are my hero. :)

Some very important realisations in here: marriage is, indeed, to save each other and to get to know each other over and over again and never ever give up.

I love that you're keeping this story real and keep resisting the temptation of falling off the realistic and painful into some kind of artificial happy ever after. You're doing a fabulous job of keeping the characters threedimensional, and an even better one at keeping the relationship threedimensional, through depression, duty, pressure, companionship and communication problems. And I love how well they communicate without talking, how well they understand each other, even when they don't know what to do to make things better. It's profoundly touching and for sure a type of marriage that beats Operah-inspired-dravel-teamed-with-fluffy-ponies any day of the week. :-)Keep your head up, darling. You're doing fantastic.

Oh, it's heart-breaking to see them like this. I'd like to shout at them, "Why don't you talk to each other?"
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
They will. I think they are both so interior in some ways, and so independant. I see them both as people who like to work things out on their own, though they will learn (probably over a great deal of time) to come to each other first. Thank you so much for reviewing!

'he would give her what he could': since it's related to traveling (which he'll be allowed to do after the 900 hrs), I sincerely hope that it means retrieving her parents for her, not running away to free her of his presence or something noble Gryffindorish stuff like that. What she needs, is HIM. But it's quite convincing that a man, and especially a man like Severus, doesn't know how to do that - yet. Pls keep up updating!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, he would never leave her, I don't think. I don't think he could, even if he thought it was The Best Thing To Do (tm). :) And as I said after chapter 40, she's find him if he hid on the moon. More very soon! Thank you so much for reviewing!

There it is the step towards a new and not yet thought about life for two peöple. Purpose fullfilled but what then? Severus gets help, even happyness but Hermione doesn't dare to do anything without a move from him. Time to start talks about their future, their dreams, their hopes this is just a state of uncertainty for such a long time. Blessed they have the potionmaking as something to hold up the connection. As well as I dread the end of the story I am waiting for it to continue soon*Hugs*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Oneira. Yes, I think you've nailed it. Their purpose has been fulfilled, and now they have to stand down, which is hard. It's amusing to me that Severus is both having an easier and harder time with this than Hermione is. He has found something to do, which I think gives him a level of stability and purpose, but still, I think his desire to have A Plan (tm), is both very male, and an indicator of the fact that he doesn't know how to structure his world without one. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! More very soon. *hugs*

I began this story at the beginning and stayed with it forever, but then my mother was diagnosed with cancer, twice and all that goes with that. I just read the last chapter written (without reading the in between) and maybe it is just me, but the angst apparently will be wiith us forever. I was sort of hoping for two people who had learned enough about themselves and each other to finally be at peace, well, some sort of peace, but they seem even more at odds than they were in the beginning. I was just hoping for a more settled story by now. Is it ever going to be that way? Thanks for listening. Obviously, loved the story or wouldn't have followed it all of this time.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear Morganbythesea,Thank you for reviewing so honestly. I appreciate that very much. It's hard for me to answer your question about whether the story will be "settled" or not, because to me, that feels like a matter of opinion. I'm not going to tie it up tight. I'll leave them in the state they are in, and trust you to know in your heart what happens. I know why you read sadness or 'angst' into this chapter. The story has been very tainted by pain, and I think the end of a war is a horrible thing. I truly believe that no victory is ever really a victory, that all war has a cost. At the same time, I still see a great deal of hope in this chapter, for two people who have been badly hurt, and yet have not given up on each other, who are still seeking life, and taking the collateral joy that comes along.I'm glad that you've loved the story, and sorry that it didn't turn out to be what you had hoped for. I do hope you'll read the last chapter when it comes, and I hope only the best for you and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.xxoxoLariope

I am sitting here crying. Not as a bad thing, but as a response to my life and your being kind enough to put up with my response to your story, which is actually all good. I appreciate your response so much, and of course understand everything you have described about your story.I just had left my computer for quite a while with all of the updates from TPP and friends, news stations etc. anyway, I still have 489 unread emails and most of them are from TPP. I chose your story to be the first one I read and maybe expected too much. As always, you are a brilliant writer, I am just a sad reader. Thanks for understanding that and of course I will read not only the last chapter, but all of it again. War sucks, I was just hoping for something to bring me out of this funk and that is certainly not your job. Your job is to write a wonderful story with what ever outcome is yours. Thanks again for responding and caring,Morgana

I really enjoyed this chapter. Their roles have reversed, I think. Hermione's now in the kind of state Severus was in before/during the trial, and it's his turn to support her.Their lack of communication over the important stuff is believable, too, I think. They both feel completely responsible for each other, and are, subsequently, both terrified of upsetting each other by raising any issues. It's always interesting when you write from Snape's perspective. Although he is a clever man, he is not quite as good at decoding Hermione's moods as she is at decoding his, so she sometimes comes across as difficult to read. It's frustrating, but the perspective is very Snape. Brilliant as always

.It's funny, I prefer to write as Snape--or at least that was the case through 3/4 of the story. Here, Hermione feels more natural to me, although I enjoy seeing the world as he sees it. I'm so happy that you saw this chapter as a role reversal, as that was absolutely what I intended. Hurrah!Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!

First of all, I am trilled to see the update to my favourite story! Seccond, I am overjoyed that Severus is a free man, though I, like Hermione, would have liked to see him 100% free (I would have liked an Order of Merlin, first class too:-)). I do see some of what Severus realised; The brewing not only gave him something to do, it also established him, once again, as an superiour Potions Master, and should make it easier for him to get a job afterwards. I just loved the "potion-ingridients-figth", they really needed to reveal some of the tention between them. I would have liked them to talk with eachother though. I miss the magical love they had before the war ended, it is almost as the victory came with a price of their love, and I think I would have prefered them to keep their love in stead. Oh, for the better of everyone else I should say that no price were to high, but somehow I feel it was just that when the magic between them is lost, I feel cheated somehow. Their love for eachother made this story one of the most magical I have ever read, and I am so selfish that I want that back! So please, kick their asses and make them "kiss and make up", there are readers here (I am sure I am not alone:-)) that want to bask in the glow of their love for eachother!!!!

. I'm so sorry that it feels that way to you. To me, their love is the heartbeat of this story, and it has never left my mind for a moment, so I'm sorry you didn't feel it made it onto the page. I really appreciate what you said about the war having a cost, because I think that's been a big theme in SL, but I don't see that cost being their love. I hope that you will be satisfied with the end, and I thank you so much, as always, for reading and reviewing! xoxoxox

That's was a really sweet moment between the two! And the fact that they are both trying in a sense helps so much!! I hope sev can just come out of his shell and ignore the looks and everything and just go outside because hermione is at his side no matter what!! How awesome it is to have a chappie like this to read when I finally get internet back up after Ike knocked out my electricity!! Though my house and family are fine!

He wondered if this was what marriage was, just saving each other over and over again. That is simply exquisite.Slowly, inch by inch, they edge back toward one another, toward normalcy, toward life after war, toward peace. You took them about as far over the precipice as they could go and still survive, and now you are bringing them back, and the journey is agonizing and amazing and heartbreaking and very, very real. The point at which he lobs a beetle eye at her, just that single second right before he actually does it, is an incredible moment of healing. And his understanding of what she is going through, his ability to place it within the context of his own experience, is quite remarkable.I never want this to end, but if it must, this is even better than I would have imagined. You are giving them back to each other. How could I object to such a miracle?

Happy Belated Birthday, my friend!!And thank you so much for this. I'm so glad you liked that line--it was my favorite in this chapter, and it means a lot to me that you liked it too. I'm so glad that you see them coming back to each other. I think it is living that thwarts them, not loving each other, if that makes any sense.xooxoxox

As Noel Coward wrote in his most heartbreaking song, "If love were all, I should be happy."Living can get the best of even the best people. But it sure beats the alternative.
