Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

My eyes are literally drooping, begging me to close them and get some sleep. But I couldn't, not until I read this chapter. Beautiful as always and so very wonderful. I am speechless.

great chapter. Very sad, but great just the same. I can't wait to read more.

It's funny, I considered it almost fluffy compared to some of the others, and yet, I agree, it was sad. I'm glad you liked it, all the same. Thank you for reviewing!

Getting off easy aside, the rest of the chapter was rather sad. The desire to feel normal. What is normal? They really haven't had a chance to develop what would be a norm for them. Everything about their lives as a couple has not been 'normal' and until they come to an amenable understanding about each other; about how they feel, and accept it, they won't have 'normal'.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, it's often struck me since the end of DH that they have no "normal" baseline to fall back on, either in terms of each other, or just what "everyday life" might mean. They really both grew up during wartime, Snape during the first war, and Hermione during the second, and they've both been so instrumental, that it seems that neither one of them has given a great deal of thought to what would come after. War blinders, I guess. And yes, I agree that there's an element of sadness to this. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxo

Lariope, as always, this is beautiful. Haunting and magical in its rhythms and heartbreaking in its insights. Too many precious lines here for me to name, but... wow. *wipes tear

Hi, Lariope,
Sorry for reviewing so late – I read the chapter a few days ago, but didn’t manage to get back to you before today. Sometimes, RL sucks ;-)
Now then – you are nearly finished with this masterpiece, aren’t you? I can feel the end lingering round the next corner, and I don’t know yet how to survive a week without an update from you. But well… I prefer a damn good end to a story that goes on and on endlessly. No worries for that with you. This story has the perfect length, as it accompanied me for many months, gave me smiles and laughs and tears and a lot of explanations, and left me even speechless every now and then simply because of its brilliance.
This chapter was not as easy to read as I had anticipated. Of course I expected the “Not guilty”, but still, the words stung because of the way Hermione felt when they were spoken. The twist of the 900 hours potion brewing was nicely done, proving that Snape’s potions are good and won’t poison anyone.
Hermione – now what’s wrong with her? Took me by surprise, her depression and her need of reassurance. Now that everything is good, she is close to a breakdown. Makes her human once more, shows that she is, after all, still a very young woman.
Will stop babbling now. Hugs from Germany, dear, as usual. And btw – loved the beetle eyes, loved his smile, loved her laughter *g*

RL can suck, but never apologize to me for late reviews! I'm just happy you liked it! Yes, I've written a first draft of the final chapter. The end is just as you say, right around the next corner. But it's time. And I'm very happy that you've enjoyed it, Chivalric. Thank you so much for all your support.xoxoxox

The chapter was simply delightful. Although it is true that our favorite couple is creeping towards happiness, there is still that hint of other emotions that need to be dealt with and I enjoy the mix of feelings. I especially enjoyed Severus' notion! It was giggle worthy!

Thank you! I'm so glad you saw the real, occasional joy between them. They do not have an easy road, but they know how to laugh together, and that is a good thing, I hope. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for reviewing!

When they read off the charges, I was actually cheering! YAY!!!"It was just that here, sometimes, some days, when they had been working so easily together, when dusk fell soft and heavy in the sitting room, and the fire crackled, and she laughed… sometimes he could forget how people looked at him outside, forget what it had felt like to sit chained to a chair with hundreds of eyes on him. Here, in the house, he had known the tentative stirrings of happiness, and he was afraid to push the boundaries of anything, for fear that he would upset some precarious balance and find it all destroyed."THE best part of the entire chapter. I really felt this spoke volumes about him, and you hit the nail on the head with exactly what I thought he was feeling.Brilliant, friend! Another fabulous update.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much, Dyno! I'm so glad you were cheering. Hurrah for Snape! And I'm happy that you liked his thoughts there. I always think that Snape would be rather baffled at finding himself content.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxox

Beautiful work as always Lariope. I am amazed at how you have developed these characters further. yet they remain true to their origins. I particularly liked Snape reflecting on the desperate times that were his first weeks at Hogwarts. Know you must be coming very close to the end of this tale. I will miss it. It is definitely my favourite, favourite

. Yes, we're almost there now. It's very hard for me to imagine. I have lived with these two in my head for so long, it will be weird to see the world without their comments. :) I'm very glad that you liked Snape's remembrances of his first weeks at Hogwarts. I cannot imagine, truly, what that must have been like for him. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, and for sticking with this story for so long!xoxoxo

This chapter was beautifully written and so realistic. When Severus told her “I did not marry your for your skills at housewifery,” the fact that he was teasing did not dawn on her. Instead, she thought only of her promise to him to win his acquittal and his freedom. This told eloquently of the emotional place each was in. Severus was glad, whatever the outcome, that his ungodly public trial would be over, and Hermione was so fearful of having failed her husband if the pronouncement were guilty-as-charged.I have been, at different points in my life, in the same emotional space as each of our protagonists, and I understand each of their responses to the trial and the acquittal.Kingsley did a masterful job throughout the trial, and your plot and telling of his part in the story was superb. He truly did Severus a favor, and I think the fact that Severus was convicted of very minor violations having to do with saving Hermione's parents made it easier for the populace to get past whatever they may have thought if he had "gotten completely away." The "sentence" of 900 hours of brewing potions for St. Mungo's will insure that Severus will be able to pursue his chosen field in the future and will insure that his brewing will be trusted, and he will be able to take care of his wife.It would have been nice for Hermione if Severus had felt he could go to Flourish and Blotts with her, but I can say without reservation that I understand how he felt. After being chained to that chair in the courtroom, I don't think I'd be too keen to be among the populace either. Maybe that's why I was sorted into Slytherin. But Hermione will continue to go out to see her friends from time to time, and Severus will work as hard as he can to complete his 900 hours of community service... and then he will take her to see her parents, perhaps to bring them home to Britain. The scene you wrote in the laboratory when she was helping Severus prepare potions ingredients was brilliant. Their "ingredients" fight was good for them both. They were able to laugh and cut the fool with each other for the first time since the end of the trial. They have been through rougher times than these, and I believe they will weather these last few weeks until Severus commitment to the court is over. This was a great chapter, and though I don't want your story to end, I know it must. I await the next (last?) chapter with hope for the future for Severus and Hermione, and with a profound gratitude for the gift you have given your readers.Very Well Done!!!!Beth
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Beth, this means the world to me. Having been in both their shoes vis-a-vis the trial, as well, I can only say that I'm gratified that you recognized something in there. And above all, I'm glad you have faith in them. As you say, they've been through worse. I'm often struck, although I've never found a way to work it into the text explicitly, by the fact that not only are they relearning how to live, but they are learning how to live together. Their very first night spent entirely together was post-war--they have no history (as far as living together) to fall back on. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, my friend!xoxox

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Three cheers for sweet justice!!!!!!!!!!!! I understand totally Kingsley's reasoning in the sentence Sev received, and I could kiss him. Sev is making good progress, but poor Hermione seems to be stuck in limbo at the moment. She'll snap out of it soon though, she's a toughie. What an amazing chapter, I really felt her numbness before the verdict, it was terrific! I would give you six stars, but the drop-down won't let me and my hacker skills aren't exactly up to much.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree that Hermione is as tough as they come, and it is her turn to fall apart. She's earned it. And I think Severus is kind of sweet in his bumbling attempts to "carry" her as she carried him.I'm so glad that you were happy with the verdict, and with Kingsley, who did, I believe, the best he could with what he had to work with. Hurrah for Kingsley! Thank you so much,

That was so great. I mean I hoped that he'd be free, but wow what a relief. I understand that he wants to be rid of his punishment as soon as possible, but it really looks like Hermione needs to get out of the house with him for a second. Oh and the ingredient fight in the basement...priceless. Thanks for a great chapter! Cheers! ~Brena

Oh, this was just wonderful. It's so good to see Severus taking his first steps on the path towards healing - but Hermione, poor Hermione. It's a long way to things being "back to normal" for her, isn't it?*sniffles*

God I was holding my breath when Kingsley was delivering the Wizengamot's decision. To every "not guilty" I felt so relieved. 900 hours of brewing simple potions is absolutely nothing for him, not even any sort of punishment. And when they "battle" in the lab it was so refreshing. A bout a laugh for them. Just tobelieve that life can be easy, joyful. I hope that his last thought are about her parents. That he wants to travel to go and find them and give her back what he can. I'm sad we're reaching the end but it can't be helped.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree--it is a punishment in name only. Which is still a punishment--as Hermione says--still a jab at him, but nothing he can't handle. But I think for him to be able to laugh with her is good, that he can sense (if nothing else) that laughter will help. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, my dear xoxox

"Briefly he wondered if this was what marriage was, just saving each other over and over again." Beautiful!Have you noticed the change in tone over the past few chapters. At first I thought you were gearing up for the trial to be the climax, yet now it seems like Severus is up to something. I think this is my favorite chapter yet.
