Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
I think this story is so well done. Its always so disapointing to come to the end of the chapter and know there is no more to read for awhile. How soon do you think more will be done?

Hi,

. Thank you for reading! I'm really glad you're enjoying the story. I know, WIPs are brutal, aren't they? Well, the honest answer is that I'm not sure. It usually takes me a week to write a chapter, and I'm already almost 2000 words in, but I haven't hit the really hard parts yet. I've been slower lately due to real life problems and all the research that the trial has taken to write. But I assume this one will be in about a week. We only have a couple more to go now!

Great, emotional chapter. It's palpable how hard it is for Snape to go through this and equally emotive how strong Hermione is being for him. She's truly an 'avenging angel', I have faith that everything will be ok in the end. It's hard to read until then, but of course I read it breathlessly over and over to find the nuances. Snape will be vindicated, I know it!! Thank you for such a great story, once again!! When I receive that update email, it really does make my day! I wish I could reread the chapter again now.. but unfortunately I am off to (another) OB app. I live there these day.. lol. Ta!

That was painful, that. I was sad, then angry, and then how you ended it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Our Hermione is some witch, yeah?I trust that Shacklebolt knows what he is doing, because if not, I'll be taking him down, and I imagine I'll have a few helpers! Those questions were brutal, but I know Snape won't lie - because if he does, it's over. He's put himself out there and they'll dig up everything, causing so many people pain, but it just HAS to end alright for him, doesn't it?And how long can he go without magic? It's an integral part of who he is! Poor Snape. And I love how Hermione isn't using magic before him or on him without asking.Oh, excellent chapter! Just love it!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
She is some witch. It would be hard for me to love her more, or to have more faith in her than I do. I like the image of you with a posse, hunting Kingsley down!!Snape would never lie. Remember, even back at the beginning, he said, "you always lie with the truth"? Which is not to say that he's lying with the truth, just that I consider him a man who is deeply committed to the truth.Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, my friend!

I still haven't catched up all the chapters I missed during being first too busy, then on holiday, but I simply coudn't wait to read this chapter. It's so well done... Excellent study of someone in both their situations, and such a wonderful, heart-breaking tale of so abysmally dire straits they both have to go trough. I know I said it already several times - but I really can't await reading on, the supsense is really tough. And I really regret that my English doesn't suffice to say all I would like to say about your wonderful tale.
Author's Response: Thank you so much, Alcina! I'm really glad you're still enjoying the story, and very flattered that you're catching up after time away. I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Please, stop this torturing! I hate the reporters. Imbeciles. I pity Hermione, and I can't imagine what Severus id going through. I just wish this trial would end already so they could get on with their lives, start the healing they so desperately need. The love they have for each other, it's so beautiful, the way you show it in the backround the whole time.Thank you so much for another chapter in this amazingly beautiful story!~

. I've taken care of it. And I wish that I could tell you that I'm going to stop the torturing right this instant! But I'm not. I expect two more chapters of torturing. I'm sorry! But there will be other things besides the trial in those chapters. It won't be all torture all the time. Thank you for your lovely review. I'm glad you can still see their love. :)

My dear, I didn’t expect this chapter to be so heartbreaking, as it tells us only (mostly) what we already know. But the way you tell it gives the whole story a twist, a deeper meaning, and allows us an insight into Snape that is very rarely found. I do love your Hermione. She is strong, she loves him, and she stands beside him without being considered too young to do so. You captured her character perfectly, and you added facets that make her… complete. I don not find another word. Her and him - a perfect couple, and not because of sex, but because they are equals. Wonder when he will realise it ;-) As always, hugs from Germany. As always, I’m eagerly awaiting your next chapter.

Oh, Chivalric. That makes me so happy. And yes, we haven't been given much new information here; I agree. And it's weird, early on in the notes for these chapters, I expected to write more about Snape's early life that we hadn't seen, but as I wrote it, it seemed to me that this is really about Snape, in that Snape's whole life has been about presenting the same information so that it looks different to different people. And so I decided to try to do that.I'm so glad you still love Hermione. I think she is just as tough as nails, and so intuitive about handling Severus while he is in this kind of pain. And I'm glad you are seeing them as equals. That was my greatest hope for this section of the story. *hugs you tight* more soon!

I like courtroom reports from Snape trials very much. I expect you will continue this torture for a while longer and I plead guilty to looking forward to it. I do hope, however, that at least some of the torturers will have their comeupance before the end of the story.

I know there's a general outcry for the death/imprisonment of Skeeter, but I don't know if I can get it in there. Perhaps we'll just have to be assured in our own minds that Hermione would never rest until she had taken care of that heartless beetle?I'm very glad that you are looking forward to the trial. Thank you!!

I think Kingsley is doing this all very clever. it feels like slicing poor severus up in pieces, but the aim is, that he can lead a normal life after this procedure. and that can only happen when the public really understands all of his motives. Even if it looks and must feel like a soul-strip-tease to him, but I agree with Kingsley, there is no other way. And besides, people like voyeurism, we all know that. partly their kind of revenge, too. painfull, but well done.they have to stand a lot these days. If they only found out, that they can sand it the better, the closer they work together and soak in the good they can give to each other, these poor two genious! Well, that needs time, too, I fear.salva

are you sure by setting the date of the trial in may?when was this famous final battle then? I never cared to count anything or trace it down.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear Salva,Yes, I spend a LOT of time with the timelines of book 7. Although I disagreed at first, I've come to accept that the official date of the final battle is May 2, 1998. So we're seeing the hearing a little over two weeks later (as Kingsley promised). But I'm glad you were thinking about it!I am glad that you have faith in Kingsley, too. He has some strategy up his sleeve, even though it looks bleak at first. I agree that this would be easier if they would give in to each other--but I think they are coming to that realization. Whether he would ever admit it or not, I think he's glad she's with him on the couch.Thank you so much for your review!

Well, this is going much as I would have expected Severus's trial to go. It appears that he is making some effort to exert himself finally. I'll be anxious to see how it turns out. Well written chapter, as always!

I feel horrible for never having left a review the whole time I've been following Second Life! I always intend to, I really do, but I always end up either forgetting or realizing that I don't have time...poor excuses.
It’s touching how clearly you can see the love between Severus and Hermione in this chapter. They don’t speak of it, or express it in traditional ways, but it’s there, strong and solid and real. I especially loved the scene in the kitchen, when we (and Severus) get to see how her every act is a subtle gift to him -- and that that subtlety itself is a gift. But I loved most of all the moment as they entered the courtroom; the slight pause before Severus closed his hand around Hermione’s made the gesture more meaningful, because it wasn’t just reflex -- he meant it, as a gesture of love and...one-ness, I guess.
I’ve got to say, I was thrilled when I pulled up the chapter and saw how long it was -- and not two seconds later, I was finished! You’ve made an addict out of me; I might even have to go back and reread the earlier chapters (or reread again, I should say) just to get my fix.
I’m not sure if any of that (especially the convoluted second paragraph) made complete sense, as it’s the middle of the night and I should be in bed and not reading your magnificent fiction, but that’s what I get for religiously checking for an update every evening. I can’t wait for the next chapter, painful as I know it is going to be! Severus and Hermione have a heart-wrenching time ahead of them, I’m sure.
Aaand that was supposed to be the end of my review, but I have just one last comment: I’m so impressed by the growth that both Severus and Hermione have experienced as characters. It’s rare in SS/HG fiction for the two of them to grow so believably over the course of a story, rather than gravitating toward the cliche end-of-fanfic-Hermione/Severus-personalities which don’t vary much at all from one story to another. (“I’m Severus Snape, and I’m so much more tender and loving than I used to be, although I’ve retained my familiar snarkiness!” “I’m Hermione Snape, and I’ve learned to abandon my naiveté and emulate Severus’s tough sarcasm to a degree, but I will always be compassionate and self-sacrificing!”...or variations on similar themes) Does that make sense? Haha...I hope so...in Second Life, they seem more like real people, facing life in very real ways, more than in any fanfic I’ve ever read. No, I’m not exaggerating.
But I digress. I loved it!

Lydials, I feel certain you've reviewed at least once before. I know I've typed your name! But listen: if you never reviewed before and never did again, it would be perfectly ok. This beautiful review that you have left me--I'm speechless with joy. It's as if you looked inside me and saw all my best intentions, and that... well, I don't have words for that. Thank you.

Another lovely, beautifully-crafted chapter. Well done, toots, well done indeed. Writing lawyer-y stuff is a lot harder than watching a few episodes of Ally McBeal.Keeping us chomping at the bit! Brilliantly. CheersCB!

Another wonderful chapter as always. You certainly feel for the characters here. Hermione is trying to be so strong, but for how long? You have to wonder if Kingsley is doing the right thing and fear what will happen when Severus is forced to speak about his marriage to Hermione in front of the court. I'm assuming that will come. I hope there will be a happy ending for this couple. They both certainly deserve it.

Poor Hermione. It's like she's living with an automaton rather than her husband. He seems to have made at least minimal improvement though, speaking to her a little and at least changing his clothes for the hearing... Hopefully when the trial is finally over he will be able to return to himself again. Really hate Dumbledore. Even with all that he's done, He seems all smug and to think that he's above reproach. Would love it if someone sets fire to his portrait! ...after the trial is over and Severus is set free, of course (since, even if he didn't want Severus to live, his testimony is necessary)... Adore this fic! Your characters seem so real. Looking forward to the next!

This is exquisitely agonizing (or maybe agonizingly exquisite). Kingsley is absolutely right that this all must become part of the public record, that the community as a whole must be made to understand exactly what he did (even the awful things, perhaps even especially the awful things) and why.Yet for as deeply private a man as this, these revelations are deeply painful, and you have helped us feel every wound. Hermione's understanding is remarkable. Knowing that he values the truth above everything else, especially since he is now past the need for lies, is truly insightful, and I absolutely adore the ability you have given her to know what she must and must not do.The scene in the kitchen between them is so tender and devastating. "No one but him would ever see that girl again" had me in tears. I love that they each value the gifts they have given to each other.I am also happy so far (though still tremendously fearful!) that he seems to be getting a fair hearing, even if he does not want to tell them anything at all. They may get him through this despite himself, and I take some small measure of hope from the fact that he allows her to hold his hand. There is distant possibility in that gesture.I look forward to hearing from those who have some reason to respect him for his actions and care about him at least because she does. I hope he will be able to hear their testimony. There aren't enough stars to rate this properly.

I know that sounds dumb, because I write her, but she is truly an astoundingly strong woman with extremely good instincts, and I'm very happy that you are liking her here. And possibility. Yes. :)We'll hear a lot more testimony from those we've been waiting for in the coming chapters. Thank you so much, my friend.

This trial seems like it is going to be a fiasco. Why is Kingsley going to rehash Severus's entire life? Severus is not the only one who will be a wreck, Hermione is being put through the wringer as well. She will hear in open court (picked to death) how much Severus loved Lily. Does he still is the question in my mind--I mean more than his wife? Oh gosh, now I am crying.

! *hold you tight*It's ok, I swear! Severus loves Hermione so much more deeply than he could have ever loved Lily--because she loves him back, and they've built something on that. Hermione knows all about this. She's seen the Pensieve, and we've known that she's known about the Patronus for so long. This is bad, yes. It will hurt, just as it would hurt me to sit and listen to my husband be asked all about the woman he loved before me, but it will not break their relationship. My Hermione has always been very pragmatic about Lily. The trial... well, it's a fiasco. But a controlled one. Remember that the man in charge believes. And where he's going, he's going for a reason. *hugs you again for good measure*Thank you for reading and reviewing, my dear! xoxoxoxo

That was a really strange chapter, kind of intense, but kind of numb at the same time. Very fitting for Sev at the moment. Poor guy's not even in the same time zone as his happy place at moment. Glad to see Hermione's still keeping close watch over him. He's seeming a little twitchy the the mo.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Heh, a strange chapter yes. And intense and numb are good words for it. But I do think he's cracking a bit. That he's speaking at all seems somewhat... oh, I suppose I'll give in and admit that maybe hopeful isn't the word, but it's something. I think you're right--this is his chapter, even when we're not in his head, and it makes it very charged with his odd perspective. Thank you for reviewing!
Response from helshez (Reviewer)
The cracks are what I meant by twitchy. A crack can either let stuff trickle through and gradually erode the wall, or it can create an unstable fault line that could bring the whole thing crashing down on you. He's in a dangerous place at the moment.

Poor Severus. He's going to relive a lot of bad memories during this trial. I wonder if he's distancing himself from Hermione so that she won't think less of him when everything comes out. That would make the most sense. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

! Yes, poor Severus. I think he's the kind of man who never stops reliving his bad memories. It's admitting to other people what might hurt him that is the worst. He might be willing to let Hermione see under the armour, but having to let other people is akin to torture. More soon!

Gracious, that's almost asking the impossible of him. But, yes. Thank you for reviewing,

I am cringing on Snape's behalf. He has never had much, but what he had was important to him. To have his inner life exposed to the world to see is probably worse torture than the blood whip. You made me feel like I was there, in that courtroom.

. I was very worried about the courtroom. I had to use Snape for eyes in there, and he didn't want to look around! :)I am absolutely thrilled at your reaction, even though that seems odd. But that's how I see him too--such a private man, almost covetous of his secrets. This is like slow death.Thank you!

Thank you for another fantastic chapter to a most fantastic story! The trial is so far brilliantly written, I sat on the egde of my seat while reading. I am not especially trilled with Severus, he is still pouting because he culdn't have his honorable death I assume. Being a dead hero, romanticised to the world as one who loved Lily Evans so much that he sacrificed everything for her is so much better than being exposed as the slave to Voldemort and Dumbledores whims I guess. I must admit that I want "my" Severus back, the one who loved Hermione so much it hurts, who used his brains, who manage to see the faults in Dumbledores plans and daring to correct them. Is he ashamed of being married to Hermione? He should be ashamed, but not for being married to her, but for being an idiot. Hermione deserves better, she stands by him, keeps his secrets, loves him and risk loosing everything for him. What does he think will happen to her if he is convicted? She won't have any future in the wizarding world thats for sure. Why doesn't he grow a spine and tell them that while their scratched their arses, bending over backwards to suck up to Voldemort, he risked everything to save their ungrateful arses and then they dare look down on him and Hermione? While I hardly expect, or want, a Severus who pours his hart out to the court, I would have liked to see a man who knows that he did what had to be done, and what he was forced to do and at the same time was lucky enough to find someone special who is worth his and the rest of the worlds complete respect. Do update soon, I want more:-)) (and as I have said before, 5 stars are way to few for this story, please make it 25 stars in your mind:-))

.Hermione does deserve better. Though I always have more sympathy for poor Snape than you do! *grins* There's so much in his head, in his heart, and I think he is so afraid to let any of it out for fear that he would be somehow so impossibly diminished. But I don't think he can keep her out. Both because she would not let him and because he simply could not stand it for long. Their lives are so deeply entwined at this point that isolating them from each other is like cutting themselves off at the knees. He's hobbling himself with what he's doing. I don't think he would ever, ever admit that, but I think he knows it. I'm very hopeful for what's up next, and shall set out to work immediately. Thank you so much, as always. xoxox

Oh dear. The angst levels are going off the charts! I do hope you won't put us through the wringer much longer. You know, as bad as I feel for Severus, Hermione's situation is tugging at my heartstrings more. She has gone through so much, and Severus has just got to realise how young she still is. As strong-willed and determined as she seems, she is very vulnerable and needs some sort of sign from him that he does indeed care for her and wants to fight for a future with her.

It's that damned broken angstometer again!!No, I think it's perfectly logical to feel worse for Hermione, much as I often felt worse for Severus during the war itself. But I agree that she needs him to crack, if only for her, now. Thank you for reading and reviewing, pythia! xoxo
