Seventh-year student Hermione Granger decides to marry the one eligible wizard who did not ask for her--the horrid but powerful Severus Snape. All is not sweetness and light. Be careful what you ask for. Or, as has been said by many a wise witch, "Marry in haste; repent in leisure." MLC

Care of Magical Creatures recently received two awards on "Secrets of the Dark Vaults," a Russian fanfic site. Best NC-17 and Best Maxi Translation. The Nine-Year Plan was awarded Best Mini-Fic! I'm delighted to be in translation and to please the readers in Russia!

With the completion of Care of Magical Creatures my fanfic output is going to slow way down, but if you want to be sure to know when new fics post, please follow me on twitter. I don't tweet much, but I'll surely tweet that kind of thing.
About Mia
I came to the world of Harry Potter relatively early, after first resisting it because it just seemed too trendy. But when the first book came out in paperback in the US I picked it up at the airport when I was about to catch a flight, and two chapters in knew I would be ordering the original from amazon.co.uk in hardcover as soon as I landed.
I came to fanfic late, waiting until after I'd read DH. That means I've been totally obsessed with the fanfic world of Harry Potter, and most specifically the SS/HG ship, since August of '07.
I'm helplessly and hopelessly hooked.

"I am not attending some ridiculous Muggle ritual to celebrate the birth of someone who has been dead for two thousand years"*dies laughing*

Well, I mean really. I see his point. (LOL)
Response from cmwinters (Reviewer)
I do too! And it was a very Snapey line!
Weirdly, I found myself kind of relieved by the conversation with Hooch. I had figured I was supposed to like and trust her, and be happy that Hermione has an adult friend who is NOT Snape, but as enjoyable as her energy has been, sometimes, she'd just make me kind of uncomfortable. This is actually a compliment to you, since it is the realistic sort of discomfort I would be feeling about the Hermione/Snape relationship if applied to real life. You know what I mean? Hooch is Hermione's adult friend, but before this chapter, I don't think Hooch really appreciated that. She considered herself too much the knowledgeable adult for true friendship. And this made all her dire warnings about Hermione's dynamic with Snape slightly disquieting for me, however honest and realistic they were, for I was applying them to her as well, despite the lack of sexual overtones.Basically, I enjoy the fact that the Hooch relationship is advancing as well as the Snape one.Great chapter, as always.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I adore Hooch and have from the first scene I wrote with her, but as they continue I find myself fascinated by the fact her relationship with Snape as much as anything else. He trusts her implicitly which makes me trust her, but I was kind of relieved to see that she doesn't know him quite as well as she thought. (And no, I didn't really know until that scene played itself out.) I'm happy that "knowing Snape" is still Hermione's domain.
Something does indeed happen: "Miss Granger, if we are to totally explore the power of the vows we took, I must tell you that over the past three weeks, you have become all that is beautiful to me." What an exquisite concept, and so perfectly put!A beautiful end to a near-perfect birthday, and how nice to dream of having an ordinary life. I do so hope that they get to put a plan or two into action, despite (and beyond) the Hallowe'en that is to come....
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you. Part of what I'm hoping is coming through is that she's still not this raving beauty, despite the fact that her entrance into the Great Hall was well-noted. But she's beautiful to him, which is what love (even unacknowledged) does.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Reviewer)
I just re-read this, as you've posted a new chapter (yahoo!!), and I felt I needed to go back two to get up to speed, and I found another line that I love even more this time around:He "wondered at which point he'd landed himself so firmly in the handbasket to hell that he took pleasure in making a teenaged git jealous."You are just a delicious writer!!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
LOL! Well, it really did feel a bit ludicrous that he was hyper-aware of a teenager's attention to his wife (just another reminder that she's a teenager, too, of course)!
Thank you!
I think I enjoyed this second part of her birthday even more than the first. There was something so wonderfully heartfelt about it. And I'm really enjoying your Hooch - she's so refreshingly blunt. And Hermione does need someone there for support - someone who is neutral (but rather disposed to be "on her side", at least to an extent) and adult.I also appreciate the reminders now and then of how short a time they've actually been married! When one has been reading a story for months, it's easy to forget (or not consider) that it's only been three weeks for them - and that everything is still so very new, so very raw, so very scary.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I do think Hooch is on her side, and has been from the very beginning--but maybe not emotionally as a friend. I see Hooch as rather feminist (of course) and despite earlier disdain for Hermione (and vice versa) she felt compelled to issue the kinds of warnings she has to Hermione about protecting herself.
So sad - planning on her birthday - trying to be an oridinary couple while he thinks that it all comes to ahead on Halloween. That got me - It was heartbreaking. Good chapter.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you. There are so many emotions in this chapter it's interesting to see which ones people respond to in their reviews. I'll admit, but the time I finished the chapter I was feeling the same way you do.
Very sweet! I am continuing to enjoy this story enormously.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much!
Another amazing chapter Mia!I love the second part of the birthday everything was perfect I'm glad Severus was able to give Hermione that one moment of feeling above all others. And also, the way Hermione reacted to that.I'm really sad for Hooch; even though I've never liked her much; to be dismissed like that because she has an unusual gift and it must be horrible to be betrayed like that by someone you care about.I found the discussion at the end hillarious! It really is what a normal couple would quarrel about; and I'm glad Hermione could have at least a little bit of that. And I really do understand why she feels it will make the marriage seem more "real".So umm... my birthday is this Friday so i was thinking... can I have Severus for just that day? Please pretty please? :)Or maybe just another chapter? *hint, hint*Amazing chapter yet again, Mia.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I found it amusing that not only did Hermione want that moment of quarreling at the end, but she even knew exactly what kinds of things married people quarrel about, or at least what would get on Sev's nerves. LOL!And yes, I feel sorry for Hooch. It must be a lonely life up there, unless there's somebody else in the neighborhood for her that we don't know about. And I'll try to have the next chapter up before Friday!
Response from thegoodshipper (Reviewer)
Yay! if you do you will totally make my birthday! Oh and don't think I didn't notice how you avoided giving me an answer about Severus. But yeah I agree with you I wonder how exactly does she know what married people argue about. I guess probably her parents because the only other married couple she has been around has been the Weasleys. And yeah I really though Severus would kind of want to rise above arguing with Hermione and yet Hermione found the absolute perfect thing to get Severus in a bit of a snit. LOL.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I think Severus is at such a total loss as to how to behave in a relationship that the idea of quarreling on demand as yet another birthday activity left him frozen in the headlights. I mean, quarreling, snarking, etc? No prob. But while he's actually attempting to give her something special? Um, no clue. LOL! But she got around him, anyway.
If you can find a way to get Sev that day--well, you could get rich if you share it with the rest of us!
Response from thegoodshipper (Reviewer)
Well if I got him I probably wouldn't want to share him anyway LOL ;)
I must say....I love your story. I've read it all in one sitting and it's wonderful. I can't wait for the next chapters... you need to write them a happy ending.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so very much! I'm happy you're enjoying the story, and perhaps I shouldn't admit it, but I couldn't survive the experience myself if I couldn't find a happy ending for them!
Terrific.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you! I'm glad you're still enjoying it!
I'm glad Hermione got her wonderful day. I really have to disagree. 'Ordinary' people don't have such wonderfully magical and beautiful days. Only a person as lovely and wonderful as Hermione could have such a perfect day with a person like Severus, at least the way you depict him (which, might I add, is extremely convincing. He is a very believeable Severus). (By the way, I am aware that I blatantly overused the word 'wonderful,' but I really cannot think of another way to describe it.)I really liked how Hermione didn't want to be looked at. She didn't like feeling on display, and she only wanted to purposly make herself look nice for Severus.I'm glad she truly understands how beautiful Severus thinks she is. I'm not saying she's not beautiful. . . it's just that Severus obviously loves her, and love can do strange things to your emotions. . . and visual percepters. (wink wink)Thank you so much for updating! Squeee! I can't wait until the next chapter is up!~Katie
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I think you understand totally. Hermione isn't gorgeous/beautiful. But she's developing the aura of a very confident, much-loved (physically and emotionall) woman and it's the aura that is catching people's attention. We've all known people who aren't classically beautiful yet whose presence can overwhelm a room, and that's what I see happening. On the other hand, to Severus, she's as beautiful as the moon and the stars and the sun and the sea.:)
I am glad that Hermione thoroughly enjoyed her birthday. She's now finally convinced that Severus finds her beautiful. Hopefully the following day is not incredibly worse.I still am not sure what Severus plans for Halloween. He doesn't want to think about it, which makes me think that he has something bad planned. But, could he really poison Hermione. I have a feeling that he won't, but I don't yet know if he plans to or not.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Severus definitely has plans. That doesn't mean they'll come to fruition. And that's all I'm saying about that!
I really hope they both make it to christmas! How long are you planning on making this story anyway?
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I don't know how long it will be, but we're in the last third of the story, anyway! Thank you!
To start, I must begin with an apology. I've been writing like a madwoman of late and came down with a cold, which means I needed a break. I'd seen your story mentioned out and about, so I decided to try it.The first few chapters, I found myself wondering what the fuss was about. It starts with Hermione, desperately asking the Potions Master to marry her. It will save her from the Malfoys, but the whole thing? It's been done before. So, I tell myself, read a few more chapters to be fair and if I don't find something different, something unique, I can go read Objects of Desire for the 400th time.Wow. Did I ever find something different. You've added such dimension to the whole MLC theme. This Hermione is not the shallow panicked girl she seemed at the beginning. She is screwed up and totally three-dimensional. Your Snape is extraordinary. Your Voldemort is nothing less than remarkable in a unique interpretation. I applaud your story, your characterizations, and the vividness of your writing. I eagerly await the rest of your story. My only regret is that there isn't a rating higher than 5 stars to offer. Thank you!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Your review overwhelms me on several levels, most especially because I've been reading and adoring your MIP (masterpiece in progress) since I started reading fanfic immediately after DH. My original intention was for this to be fun spin down the MLC lane; I had no idea how it would turn into something a little more, and I'm very grateful that you gave it a chance. Thank you for your wonderful review!
I really enjoyed this chapter and I enjoy in general the attention you bring to the magic that exists in "ordinary" love. I am also highly intrigued and impressed with your combination of "muggle" religion into this piece. I don't think I've read another fic that does so and in adds to the poignancy of the story. When you write about what you know, and don't contrive, you bring reality inot your creation and therefore bring it to life. Your chapters flow eloquently and its always a joy to see when your fic is updated (and how often it is updated!!). Keep up the great work!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I certainly never intended to bring religion into it, for sure. Therein lies the path to a big ugly mess, potentially. But one thing led to another in the story until that's where I went with it, and I'm glad it's working for you. I'm sure there are some people who are probably annoyed or offended by it. Thank you so much!
Awesome!! I love the ending of the chapter. I also love your characterization of Hooch. Great!!!!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you, thank you! I adore Hooch!
I'm thankful not only for this story, but also for the fact that I don't have to drive to Barnes and Nobel and buy a paperback copy of it for $10, because there isn't a doubt in my mind that you have the potential to publish your work and sell it for an indecent sum of money, as most authors have the luxury to do these days.In other words: this is wonderful, and thank you for it.I look foward to these chapters more than I have any other fic. I would blather on and get sappy about it but you get it, I'm sure.Have a good one,Sue.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
You overwhelm me! Thank you so very much for your wonderful review!
How they could call that an ordinary day for ordinary people is beyond me. It was simply magical. Beautifully written and executed, but definately not ordinary. That is a day that all women dream of and lucky Hermione got to experience it. Irish
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thanks. You're right, of course, when you put it that way, there was nothing ordinary about it!
The most successful lie can be when you tell somebody something that they already believe to be true. They will accept it without question, even if it's a blatant lie.I love the way he went about telling her she's beautiful to him. And I love her insistence on being ordinary right up to the last minute of her birthday. Wonderful!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you! She didn't waste a minute of it, did she? LOL!
Good chapter, I liked the warning Madam Hootch gave Hermione.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thanks. I had no idea when I started this that Hooch would be so big in the story or in it at all--and I'm loving her so much!
That was an absolutely lovely day.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much. It was a joy to write for those two.
Okay, now I know what I want for my next birthday! Wow! And the artses are lovely as well!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you! I love the artses, too!
"Even when compelled by magic—and he was obviously Confunded—Father Gadbury knew not to have me take vows I couldn't keep. His eyes positively twinkled when he got to that word, and substituted 'cherish' instead." LOL! That's awesome! "Our souls were waiting for us to kiss."And I absolutely love this to pieces.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I'm glad. I cringed as I typed the words!
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
But that's the best part! That it's exactly the sort of thing Hermione would mock mercilessly coming out of anyone else's mouth, but yet she's convinced of it anyway. :-)
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
You're exactly right. I cringed on her behalf. LOL!
This is a conversation that I imagine will not be an easy one! *clicks eagerly onward*
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
LOL! Yes, it has its moments!
And couldn't shake the uncomfortable thought that six years of putting up with the most ungrateful and undeserving Potter and Weasley were what he had to thank for the fact that she was here, in his arms, after all that he had said and done to drive her away.I absolutely loved watching him realize this!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I know. It was quite the revelation.
And now you have me back to wondering what he's up to! *clicks next*
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
People are always so suspicious!
