Seventh-year student Hermione Granger decides to marry the one eligible wizard who did not ask for her--the horrid but powerful Severus Snape. All is not sweetness and light. Be careful what you ask for. Or, as has been said by many a wise witch, "Marry in haste; repent in leisure." MLC

Care of Magical Creatures recently received two awards on "Secrets of the Dark Vaults," a Russian fanfic site. Best NC-17 and Best Maxi Translation. The Nine-Year Plan was awarded Best Mini-Fic! I'm delighted to be in translation and to please the readers in Russia!

With the completion of Care of Magical Creatures my fanfic output is going to slow way down, but if you want to be sure to know when new fics post, please follow me on twitter. I don't tweet much, but I'll surely tweet that kind of thing.
About Mia
I came to the world of Harry Potter relatively early, after first resisting it because it just seemed too trendy. But when the first book came out in paperback in the US I picked it up at the airport when I was about to catch a flight, and two chapters in knew I would be ordering the original from amazon.co.uk in hardcover as soon as I landed.
I came to fanfic late, waiting until after I'd read DH. That means I've been totally obsessed with the fanfic world of Harry Potter, and most specifically the SS/HG ship, since August of '07.
I'm helplessly and hopelessly hooked.
Reviews for Care of Magical Creatures
Ah, that vow is fabulous. I love that they use their names. If I were a Dark Lord, I'd certainly want an oath like that. It's good to see the innate romanticism of Slytherin sensibilities actually portrayed. Loved that Voldemort was all giddy about pulling off a good show for his minions.
Also, when Snape had to pick a deputy, I thought, Oh no, he'll have to pick Lucius! A Dark Lord and his son, they just have all these stresses, you know? Great job, have fun with the rest, and don't worry anymore about letting us down. Not gonna happen.

Bless your heart! *squish*Juno_Magic gets ALL the credit on the Latin vows. I gave her the gist of them but she wrote them, so I will be sure she knows your reaction to them. And yes, I do think the Slytherins appreciate a good show. LOL!

Thanks for sharing the entomology of the vows. I haven't left an overly emotional review of these last few chapters because I have confidence you will take us somewhere satisfactory (I mean that as Sev would say it, not as it appears on a report card :P). I'm not as positive as I was a few chapters ago, when you started us on this slippery road to the end, that it will all work out as it's "supposed to" (harry lives, voldemort dies, hermione and sev make sweet sweet love). That doesn't mean I'm not rooting for "supposed to", which this leaves me curious if harrycrux will take a part in this. If so then I'm not so worried about Sev's plan, if not then gah HOW COULD HE! Luscious was a good choice, I was a little skeptical at first but then If Sev dies Voldy says okay I'm killing your wife and your son for good measure, oh and goody goody I've just knocked out the black and the malfoy lineage because you know he will also kill Luscius and Bella.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I can't honestly say Lucius was a good choice, but I don't see a better one in the room! (Although... It did occur to me that maybe he should send the Dark Lord, ahem. I didn't think he would cooperate, though.)Thank you!!!

I had a thought after I went back to re-read CHapter 27. Severus told Hermione that the Dark Lord entices people to serve him by letting them serve in the way that would bring them the most satisfaction. I thought, Hermione would serve Voldemort through Severus, if she took that vow. It was just a thought. I wonder if Lucius will come back alive?Again, another meaty, thought-provoking chapter!

Well, and you may have noticed, Severus didn't exactly dislike the power....Ahem.Thank you so much!

This was an incredible chapter. The pacing and tension was just sublime. Severus' reactions were perfect. And what the hell did he say in his sleep?! An outstanding chapter, m'dear.

And by "was," I mean "were." Just woke up, checked email, saw this, came over, and Happy Sunday to everyone! Lordy. Oh -- and Bellatrix is *brilliant* here. All the details were just spot on and beautifully woven together.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much! Poor Bella, nobody listens to her. Such a sweet girl, too!

Genius, as always. I love this story beyond words. I've said in earlier reviews - I love the way you write Voldemort. This was probably one of my favorite chapters - their interaction and the dynamic between them is always so fascinating, and V passing some of his power on to Severus....handing him his wand - wow. I can't remember ever reading a fic that explored a relationship between the two of them on such a personal level. Absolutely brilliantly done. I also adore the entire Bella/Severus backstory (another of my very favorite past chapters) and the way you wrote her actions and reactions in this chapter was perfect.I don't know how you do it - the end of every single chapter leaves me breathless. Thank you so much for this amazing story.

Thank you for your fabulous review. I'm so happy that you saw all those things because they were certainly in my head, but sometimes everything doesn't make it onto the page....Severus's relationship with the Dark Lord has been a revelation to me from the beginning, and now it just gets more complicated. I'm as caught up in watching it unfold as you are, believe me.And Bella... I just named my new dog Bellatrix. What can I say?Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I forgot to add: “Snape, you talk in your sleep!”Best, most chilling line ever.

Poor Hermione! I hope Serverus didn't inadvertently give her location away. Perhaps with Severus' growing power, Hermione will be able to recover her magic and finish off Bellatrix? I'm relieved with the quick update, but now anxious for the next! The anticipation is killing me...I miss the joyful days of red sheets and cuddling. Can we have some of that soon? My heart is breaking for these two. Severus' faith in Hermione seems to be flagging. Does he realise that the stronger he is the stronger she gets in return?
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Oh gads, how I want to go back to red sheets and cuddling!!!This is killing me. So thank you for your wonderful review. We'll get through this together, I promise!

Not much to say about this one. I hate that Sev is 'Dark Lord II' but I know I will be able to ultimately forgive him most anything - forgive them both should it come to that. Looking forward to when our couple come together again.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much for speaking up anyway! I think I could forgive Sev anything at this point. I'm just not sure how much we'll have to forgive him for...Hermione has a big heart. I'm counting on that. Gulp.

Uhoh. What has Severus revealed in his sleep? The Grange.... I hope not. He is spiralling so deep down into darkness that I have no idea how he will manage to escape before this abyss can swallow him whole. And I am still completely clueless if his agenda only includes Hermione's rescue or the destruction of Voldemort on the way as well... because I don't believe that Hermione would be happy to have one without the other... questions over questions, Mia. And I am horrified by Voldemort's dynasty dreams *shudders* Thanks for another amazing chapter.

It's brilliant, Mia. Stunning. The Death Eaters are forced to vow fealty to Snape, whom they hate - and only the divinely insane Bellatrix possesses the unique loyalty to Voldemort to refuse the vow.*breathless*

Oh, thank you so much! You'd think after the last chapter (Severus, I am your father, spoken in James Earl Jones's voice) I wouldn't wibble any more, but this time I wibbled because I didn't have another bombshell to drop and was afraid this chapter would be a huge letdown. THANK YOU.(Um, you can return to writing TLYT now. I believe you muttered the word "smut" last time you wandered away from your LJ in a daze?)

Absolutely exquisite chapter. You have taken JKR's characters and given them the depth and breadth they needed to perform in the ever-changing place called Potterverse. Thank you for a continually fantastic read.

Wow. I can't believe that's Voldemort's solution! And I can't help wonder, despite his despair over it, how Severus is going to twist this to his advantage. Once again, you've blown me away.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)

Don't tell anyone I was here ... I'm supposed to be writing ... but when I received the email notification, I had to come read right away!Goodness, Mia. It just gets better and better. Severus becoming a "Dark Lord" in order to protect Hermione -- fabulous! And really scary. My stomach is knots over this and what Hermione might do when she finds out what all he's been up to, all to protect her. My mind is still wrapping itself around the idea that he would sacrifice everything for her safety -- that soul bond is something else!Bellatrix was perfect here -- absolutely perfect! -- and I can't wait to see what the Malfoys have up their sleeves.Wonderful, as always!!

Can this get darker? How will Severus extricate himself from the darkness? What will Hermione think of this? And will Lucius prevent Bella from finding and killing Hermione? Because if Hermione dies, Severus's "sacrifice" will be for naught.

Ah, the social life of the Dark Lord and his followers. Good wine, playing chess ... who would have thought?
Iwas glad about the light ending to an otherwise darker chapter.
...that witch can out-Dark Lord the Dark Lord at his darkest...This line really make me laugh out loud.

I wouldn't be surprised if the woman he was thinking of at the beginning of that chapter would be Bella. On the other hand, it is always Bella ... so probably you went for the normally as "nicer" depicted Narcissa? I'm rather sure you will come back to that later in the story.Oh, and part of his accepting her proposal was that it served in preventing Draco from getting his Dark Mark?LOLed when she told him that he was attentive and caring ... with his potions.Hermione really must have quite an abiltiy for suffering, to go through this every month without medical help. Poor girl.

Interesting medical procedure. I swear I won't try to repeat at home :-)Yes, the Sorting issue. It's not that they sort too early, the problem is that they sort at all - I've read this somewhere, I just forgot where (canon? meta? story?) and can only wholeheartedly agree. You bring up lines that makes me wonder about thing in the most unexpected places. I surely wouldn't have thought that they'd discuss their Sorting while he is treating her in delicate places. Well, sometimes the patient has to be diverted.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I definitely think he was trying to divert her attention, because she was WATCHING him. LOL! I'd find that disconcerting, myself. (But I'm sure she'd be wanting to give advice if she could.)

I just wonder...In many women their mothers had "programmed" this need to please and the accepting of pain and ability to suffer through their education. (Me being one of them.)The background you gave Hermione, doesn't fit into that. Her mother doesn't see to be the type for suffering, hence I don't think she would teach Hermione that she should do so. Furthermore Hermione has not spent much time at home over the last years, so I wonder where she would have developed into the character you write her as.Poor thing. That her deflowering was not a romantic one was clear, but that she had to suffer that much! And again, she wants to protect him, does not trust a professional mediwitch to keep her mouth shut about her patients and so refuses treatment.I wonder where this is leading us.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Actually, I honestly wrote it the way I believed she saw it. She knew it was supposed to hurt. It hurt. She simply has too much else to deal with and is too matter of fact for her own good, and dealt with it to the best of her ability (cushioning charms and hot baths) and assumed it would get better.
Poor Hermione!

You captured the insecurities of a girl perfectly. Obsessing over what assets she has (or not has, as she thinks). Then her bold act of setting the first step! Very unusual - but Hermione is not the usual nextdoor-witch, methinks.Well, Severus' lashing out was necessary; the anger he took with him from the last chapter simply had to find a release. I was thinking that the release Hermione brought him simply wouldn't do.But man, was this comment low.
