A Non-HBP, Non-DH, AU DM/HG fanfic.
(Acronyms: The Next Parseltongue.)
Set in a world where HBP and DH never unfolded, this AU plot bunny leapt out and throttled me last night, after perusing some DM/HG "Head Boy and Girl" fics. I really hope to keep it short, and of course all my other fics are screaming for endings, but what's another unfinished project? :) Rated for future chapters.

Someone who really, REALLY ought to be doing something else, but just keeps on writing.
Wondering why my stories take forever? Have a look at My Other Time Devourer: www.willametteartcenter.com I'm both the webmaster and the president of the Friends of the Visual Arts, a 501-C3 nonprofit in Salem, Oregon. We Put The Fun Back In Art.
Having 2 sweet little boys tends to drag things out too.
And what the heck, as long as it's self-pimpage time: If you just can't wait for the next chapter of Fair Ex, you can always go buy my book. It's not HP or fanfic but it's got that Fawkesy snark (in spades) It's here: www.turondo.com Warning: there's a bad word in the title.

very interesting and enjoyable story

Thanks.
*scream*! Ohmigawd, I can't wait for the rest. :}
Great job as always!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Thanks! I've had some slowdowns lately but hope to work on it some more soon.
I like the way Snape didn't exactly give him advice, only emphasized the difference between living a life that meets the expectations of others and one that meets his own needs. And encouraged him to consider the consequences of BOTH before making decisions. And the last paragraph nicely capped the chapter, by showing us why Snape doesn't regret his own choices.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
*blush* Yay! I didn't see Snape as the type to steer Draco any one way, particularly since draco was talking about defying his parents. But I think Snape has a lot more depth and character than he lets on with certain other young wizards.
Snape's backstory at last! Very satisfying. I like the idea of him as a willing but half-hearted death eater, quitting Voldemort's service for almost entirely logical reasons. A good man by choice, rather than by inclination, is how this chapter reads for me.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
That's kinda how I perceive Snape in general. Glad it's coming through.
Draco's certainly come a long way now hasn't he?
For some odd reason, I thought it was Hermione in the end who came up to jump at Severus =p .. But then again, in the summary of the last chapter where it said: "draco has a little talk with a trusted friend," I also thought said trusted friend was the gargoyle. Hahaha!
I don't know where my head's at these days, but it'll be in a place much worse if you don't keep writing!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
He's been at it for a few months. Snort--maybe he'll have to have a heart-to-heart with the gargoyle sometime, but no HG/SS in this fic. Except maybe on the dance floor.
I just finished reading the chapters... and I love it!!!!... please don't even think of letting this unfinished... please... PLEASE!!! XD... I'm still grieving on Fair Exchanges... I promised myself I wouldn't read another unfinished fic... but what can I say... your fics are just too good to let them pass =P
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
awww... Well, I promise to get back to Fair Ex and Private Lessons as soon as "Heirs" is finished. And this one, too.
Still loving it.
Draco got some food-for-thought. Severus can probably be certain the girlisn't pure-blooded, but I wonder if he has any idea of Draco's interest in Hermione. I think Draco has decided that Hermione isn't the type of girl to 'play' with, and won't make any moves on her unless he's willing to make an effort at a serious relationship/commitment with her.
I love how Severus' wife greeted him at the end.
Looking forward to the next.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
I'm not sure if Snape knows specifically it's Hermione, but he probably has an inkling. Either way, he knows she's someone Lucius won't approve of, since Draco said so. And yeah, I hope Draco's getting enough of a clue to realize he'd better play smart in this case.Isn't Mrs. Snape a cutie?
awwww... love that ending - his wife coming to visit (or was she just hiding out til Draco left??)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
I imagine she was peeking through the fire periodically until her hunk o' burnin' Potions Mastery love was alone. :)
I've finally read all the story so far and I love it!I'm glad that you have decided to continue,I like how this story is different form most of the DM/HG fics outthere. It takes me back to before DH and we didn't know the lives of our favorite made-up people would turn out.I hope to see more Harry,he sure has changed,Rontoo but all the hermones and all will do that.Severus is my all time favorite and i'm glad that your writing him in a good way,he needs happiness and i'm glad you've at least let him find it in the fan fic world.Hope you can update soon!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Will try. I still haven't read DH so it will definitely have that flair...
That was an interesting chapter. I kind of like the idea of Snape's wife.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Eh, it's something a little different (I don't think I've read any other fics where Snape has been secretly married the whole time...)
Wow. Another fantastic update. I loved the Snape backstory...but I'm still dying to know what Harry did to Mrs. Snape. Thanks for updating again. :)
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
All in good time...
this is so lovely. I just read the first 19 parts in a row and I love it! A great example of the way things never turn out to be quite as happily ever after as in the fairy tales. I'm so glad that you didn't make Harry a complete tosser. And I love Snape's wife, she's an interesting character. cant wait for more
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
:) Glad you're enjoying it!
Ooooh very interesting chapter.
Can't wait to find out what Draco really wanted to talk about.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Yeah, that comes next, after the buttering-up phase.
Oh, wow. What an amazingly difficult story Sev just told.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Well, nothing in his life's ever simple, is it? ;)
That was certainly interesting... now if only the chapter went long enough to say Potter's involvement with Mrs Riddle-Snape...
Haha, maybe next chapter...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Well, maybe later... Draco's got something more pressing on his mind.
Wow. Interesting backgound story. Sad she never got to hear Severus speak, his voice is one of his best features!
Your Voldemort was quite disturbed.
*wonders* Was that really what Draco came to talk about, or at least was that all he came to talk about?
Looking forward to more!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Voices: Agreed. But there's a little more to come on that.Voldy: I like to think of him as 100% ruthless.Draco: He's working his way up to asking the REAL question.
Wow! The only Death Eater that wasn't her enemy - very interesting tale of Snape's wife.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Thanks! It's not over yet, either. But it's all Draco needs to know for the moment.
Oh boy has he got it bad! Love the gargoyle bit, should've known it was a "she" ... She doesn't say much, but it must be interesting being a silent spectator in the thick of such drama :D
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
No doubt! Especially after 1000 years of rooftops...
I love the fact that the gargoyle followed him home. And he really needs to apologize to Hermione. I love the way she is treating him. It really makes him look like a child.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Well, he's sure acting like one, in comparison.

"Mind the new gargoyle." *howls with laughter*
Your story is (as you probably know) absolutely wonderful- your humor and your accurate characterization, especially of Hermione, blend well. I really like that you've shown one of the possible splits between Hermione and the boys, and just how devastating it would be to her- this is one of the only D/H fics I've seen that gets right just how large a part of her world they are. I also like the fine balance of the relationship between Hermione and Snape. Very, very well done indeed.
Author's Response: right on! Thanks! Those were all things I was striving for--it's nice to know they're coming through!
The gargoyle followed him home! *snort* Yep! Definitely a girl. *smirks* He should have toned down the Malfoy Charm a bit.
I like what Hermione said to him:
"Maybe you need to go spend your evenings down in Slytherin again, so you'll have someone to spar with. Because these games, they don't interest me at all. It's hard for me to believe that anyone really enjoys it, luring and baiting all the time, then plunging in the knife, but maybe that's just the difference between Slytherin and Gryffindor."
and that she mentioned that she 'felt the magic' the most when dancing with him. It's like her to be able to get over the embarrasing bits and forgive the insults faster than others.
Now if Draco can just get over him pride...ususally that's a Gryffindor problem...
Looking forward to the next.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Oh, that gargoyle is SUCH a girl. As for Herms--that's how I've always perceived her. She knew Ron wanted to ask her to the Yule Ball in GoF, she giggled tolerantly at him all their 6th year as he fumbled and bumbled...she clues in. And I think now that she's faced so many terrible things, she's just all the more determined to be true to herself and not play Malfoy's stupid political games.
He's trying so hard to maintain some dignity, it's painfully funny. I hope Hermione isn't going to let him keep his distance.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Oh, I don't think she'd impose anything on him... it'll be his decision to pull his head out.
nonono!I lovelovelove this story, m'dear. Imagery is fantabulous and you actually managed to break all the stupid cliches about thesew two. I. LOVE. YOU.In a good way...
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
:) Thanks! I'll keep working on it, but it's gotta go on the back burner for a while.
So glad you are continuing with this.
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Yeah, it's too cute to drop in the middle. I hadda write that gargoyle climbing on the broom scene... ;)
I wonder if a love triangle is to be had in the near future?
Anyway, I'm enjoying the story so far! So I'll be fine with however it turns out just so long as you keep writing!
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Yay! Well, I hope to keep going. Dunno about the triangle thingee tho.
Response from myami (Reviewer)
No, no, you don't have to pay heed to my overly active (and wishful) imagination.. Besides in most Draco-Hermione-Severus love triangles, Severus wins Hermione almost all the time, and that would just ruin your story now wouldn't it?
And that'd be crazy, considering how solid you've made the DM/HG back-story already =p
Response from Fawkes_07 (Author of Looking and Seeing)
Hee hee hee, that'd make a more interesting read though, wouldn't it? Particularly since there was that bit about "her downfall." Hmmmm. Well, we'll see.
