Severus has been running from himself for years. What happens when his pain catches up with him in the form of the new Potions teacher, Hermione Granger? My response to the 8th Prompt of Potter Place's Winter Challenge.

I'm 22, happily unmarried and happily enrolled in the University of my somewhat limited choice... I read constantly and write whenever I have the chance to do so. I sing, I work, I sleep, and I enjoy bickering with my awesome family. That is all.
PS: DMHP. Always.

Not only can Severus breathe, so can readers like me! Whew, the fumes were sooo thick I swear they could be cut with a knife. One week--surely Severus is up to the challenge?

I shall, thanks! :D
Nice realism in having Severus fail in his attempts. I can't wait to see how he does during the 1 week that Hermione set, although I can definitely see him needing more time for himself- I guess it all depends on the fic timeline and chapters you plan to do.
I would think Minerva would have a talk with either Hermione or Severus sometime in this story- I realize that it's a fanfic cliche, but nonetheless...I'm speculating that Minerva has tried to talk to Severus at least once a year since he came back- no?
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
You know, I thought about Minerva as I was writing the first chapter. Surely she would have said something to Severus. But then I thought, maybe she didn't know. Hermione doesn't seem to be the type to complain about it, and Severus is just manipulative enough to try to make sure his attacks toward her aren't obvious to everyone. But you're right, I'm sure Minerva will intervene at some point, for some reason or another. I'm sure she's tried to talk to Severus, but I think we can all imagine how that went... "Severus, I'm worried about you.""I'm fine, Headmistress. Leave me in peace." (mind your own business)lolThanks!
You rock! Your dialog for both of them seems spot on. I think you have quite a grasp of these characters. Hope springs eternal that not only will he go back to the tower, and face his demons and himself, he will do something in memorial of his true mentor Albus. Maybe I know it sounds corny but a wreath, sort of like (unsinkable)Molly Brown (Titanic survivor) made a wreath for every head stone erected for the victims of that wreck. Your a super writer and I am going to search for more of your stories to tide me over, till next update.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
That's a wonderful thought. I'll keep that idea in mind as the story goes on. Thanks!
I love how you covered Hermione's view of Snape. It's very thorough and well thought out. It really lays out the depth of her concern and understanding.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
I'm happy that it worked for you! :D
Just do it, you coward.Wow...just wow. What powerful words at that moment. You know this reminded me of when Severus freaked at the time Harry called him a coward. I remember thinking 'Methinks thou doth protest too loudy' when I read that passage. Your turn of phrase there really puts things so much more in perspective. Severus can hold up under self depreciation but not when someone else is dishing it.Hermione's letter was brilliant, especially the second half. I like that she called him to the carpet. Unfortunately I cannot see him reaching out just yet, not until he completely bottoms out, makes a true attempt to give and receive forgiveness (no matter how small the gesture) and stops mollycoddling with his pride.Your story is powerful and well written. I await a small moment of redemption *hopes* and the next chapter. Great job!!

It's interesting that you mention that because it's exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote it.You're exactly right - It's funny how we know what are weak points are, but when someone points them out it hurts so much more than just knowing it inside ourselves. As far as Severus reaching out, I don't think he's even close to ready for that yet. I think Hermione has thrown him a lifeline and he's ready to take that tiny step, but any more than that would be too much to begin with.I appreciate your comments, thank you! :)
Hey, a very promising start to a probably long (I would like that) story.
I liked how his first feeble attempts failed - it makes it feel realistic - how could it be easy to brave his demons after hiding from them for years and years?
And I like Hermione's reaction - making him prove he's capable of changing. It might be hard for him, but I think it might be easier for him at this point than having an open conversation with her, and give her a real apology.
Thank you!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
I'm thinking it will be fairly long, yes. I love long stories. I hope I have the stamina to keep it going. lol And you're right. It's definitely more doable for him to back off on the animosity than it would be to sit and down and have a heart-to-heart with her immediately. Even simply behaving himself will be hard enough.
Thanks!
You know how I feel about this chapter, but I just wanted to say again: Good work. :)
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
That I do. I love having your support. Makes me feel special. Teeheehee. :Dlol
The pace of this chapter is great. You covered both of their feelings about the night before wonderfully. I think Sev's first attempt at an apology is very typically "him". And Hermione's reaction to it was also spot on in my opinion. I like her request that he treat her as a human before she truly believes his sincerity. After all that he's done to her it's very reasonable of her to ask that.Just a wonderful read. Keep it coming!!!! ^.^
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
I just couldn't see her forgiving and forgetting too easily. I'm glad you agree. And thanks for the review! :D
Something tells me the week will be rather interesting...a lot harder than Sev imagines it will be, I'm sure.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Definitely. Although, at this point I'm not sure that Severus has any expectations. The man's been completely gutted. Thanks for reviewing!
I love this chapter. It is very cool how you make Hermione a healing presence in Severus' life even though he has a hatred of sorts for her! Nicely done! can't wait for more!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Thanks for the kind review. It's alwasy nice to know I'm supported. :)
This is lovely!!! I really like how you wrote Severus's apology, it makes sense that it would be extremely difficult for him to even try to do. And I especially like that Hermione doesn't just accept it and they immediately become friends... she's smart to be cautious but still generous to consider that it's sincere. I'm really looking forward to reading more!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Thank you! I'm glad it worked for you. You took from it exactly what I was trying to get across. :D
I'm really enjoying the set-up for this story. You've already built in a very nice bit of tension between the two, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

! Your good opinion means a lot to me. You know how much I adore your stories. :D
Response from Bambu (Reviewer)
You're most welcome. Believe me, it's a pleasure.
Ha! Poor Severus. Did he really think she'd buy that first apology? Glad she put him in his place, and also glad that they're both trying to make amends. Of course, the one week of politeness will probably kill him...And the part on the Astronomy Tower was excellent. Wish I'd thought to include something about that in my own fic, but then I'd have to find an excuse for Snape to go to Hogwarts. Good work!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Severus has so many issues. He probably thought she would buy it... *shakes head* She definitely needed to tell him what was up. Couldn't have her turning into a doormat. There's comassionate... and there's spineless. The week is defintely going to be interesting. lolI'm glad that the astronomy tower worked for you. I thought it was very important, and symbolic. I'm sure he'll try to brave the tower again before this is over. Thanks for the support!
When I read the first half of the chapter I thought: Wow it will take her a long time (and many chapters) to get them anywhere near friendship or romance (or even just civilized conversation). But then - abra cadabra - you made it possible for them to get confident in no time. Don't make it too easy for him though. He has got a lot of history and she was his student...
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
You know, you have a point. Still, trust me when I say it won't be easy for them. There are sooo many problems to work through before they can even have a normal friendship, let alone a healthy romantic relationship. I considered dragging on the sniping and the angst, but as I was writing the second chapter, I realised that I want this story to be a positve journey for them both, so there was no point in dragging out the negativity. I thought it was important to take the first steps toward healing. But again, it won't be easy. When it comes to these two, particularly with Sev, how could it ever be easy? lol
Well at least he FINALLY came to his senses...more soon please....
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Your wish is my command. Thanks!
This chapter made me cry. Looking forward to the next part.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Oh wow, thanks! :D
LOL, boy that was a pretty pathetic apology. And he really only did it to make himself feel better, not really because he thought he'd made her feel bad.
But he's at least taking the first step.
Thanks for updating so quickly.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
It was pretty abysmal... I won't lie. And you're definitely right; it was more for him than for her. He still has a looong way to go. I couldn't just turn him into something he's not. It will take time and hard work before he can gain a healthy perspective on his life and the people around him.
Thanks for reviewing, my dear!
Their reactions were very believable, from the beginning to the end.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
I'm glad you think so!
