Severus has been running from himself for years. What happens when his pain catches up with him in the form of the new Potions teacher, Hermione Granger? My response to the 8th Prompt of Potter Place's Winter Challenge.

I'm 22, happily unmarried and happily enrolled in the University of my somewhat limited choice... I read constantly and write whenever I have the chance to do so. I sing, I work, I sleep, and I enjoy bickering with my awesome family. That is all.
PS: DMHP. Always.
Reviews for A Living Hell
I love how she turned the tables on herself and came to the conclusion that she did. Insightful for her. I am glad the trial period is off now too. Takes pressure off. This just keeps getting better!
Oh this was a great chapter! I enjoyed the tower scene especially! You're doing such a great job, SB!
I am so glad I started this story. It's very well written and realistic. Great start with his inner struggle and self loathing that he turns against Hermione!
That is one determined woman. I am glad he is trying.
Oh I enjoyed this SB! Very good chapter! I have a feeling that Hermione will be disappointed and upset in Snape's behalf during the Burrow party. The only question is: will it bring them closer together or further apart? Maybe she could offer her bigger lab and help him with some research! It just keeps getting better and better! More soon please!
A good chapter as always and I look forward to more...
I know Hermione thinks everyone should go along with her but this has Trouble (with a capital T) all over it. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next chapter brings.
Sir Cadd and I were thinking that even though this is a small step, any step in the right direction is worth it. We hope he stays on the right path. If he strays, Sir C has volunteered to dool Severus to whip him into shape.
I do like the concept that Snape is OK back at Hogwarts but not quite ready to ever face the demons in the tower.
Excellent chapter! The snappy/snarky dialog was great to read. Hermione may be well meaning, but once at the Burrow, I imagine that other people might be less forgiving or generous toward Snape. But knowing Hermione and her propensity to defend the underdog, whoever gets caught being less than genial with Severus... the gryffindor lioness will surely make an appearance.Great writing as per usual... hope to see more soon. Cheers!
Oh, dear, Severus at the Burrow... It has 'train wreck' written all over it. Hopefully there will be no bloodshed...
It's almost like Snape is picking at a scab - knowing it hurts a little, but enjoying the feeling (so to speak).I thought that Hermione's responses were a great showing of how her love of causes had grown up and matured - until he attacked her in a way that was just a bit below the belt. Her analysis of him was dead on and well written.
She is doing a very effective job of being a 'right pest'! I'm glad she got Severus to cave in. It will be interesting to see how this goes.
I think Hermione is very much in her character of the bossy know-it-all Gryffindor. That's just her nature, even as a student. I have no doubt she'll learn things eventually. She's usually very perceptive. I hope she has a nice time with Severus; they're off to a good start. I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter.

Snape: Bloody hell. Let a man eat.Hermione: No way! I wanna harass you!Snape: Blast. LOL Reminds me of the icon where Potter Pal Snape is sturring his cauldron and Hermione keeps wanting to "help" or "play" lol
Quite well done and entirely realistic. I don't think he'll get better without some setbacks...but you seem prepared for that! Keep going! Tx!
I love that last sentence! Looking forward to the next update.

Thanks! I appreciate the praise and the review! More is on the way... :)
Change often brings destruction with it. A change was needed in Severus thus... the destruction of walls. Walls of bitterness, hate and anger. Yes. Many times you must destroy the standing structure before you can rebuild. This is an excellent beginning! Change is often painful too. I understand. Been there, done that. I know this sounds fragmented but... it's my thoughts as I think them. Sorry. Now begins the slow progress of rebuilding. My question is will Severus continue to actively resist, actively participate or will he simply go with the flow? Ah, questions!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Those are all interesting, and valid, thoughts. "Many times you must destroy the standing structure before you can rebuild."
That was particularly poignant. Would you mind if I used that in a later chapter?
As far as your question goes, I think it will be a combination of participation and resistance. Nothing is ever straightforward or simple with Severus. He has a lot of demons. It won't be an overnight change.
Thanks!

By no means did I expect a snap of the fingers and he's all fixed. LOL Use whatever I say as you see fit. Glad I could be of assistance! I'm also great for ideas if you are ever at an impasse. You go girl!!
I have to be honest and say that I prefer story with a touch of romance. Having said that, I enjoyed this story. Particularly the very bitter, childish, petty Snape. I think is the way JKR sees him.
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
I definitely agree with you, and I promise you there will be romance later on. We just have to wade through the nasty stuff first. :)
Thanks for reviewing!
I really like where this story is going. I like the fact she wanted to help him but didn't want him to know it came from her. I always felt that to some degree Snape's bitter nature might stem from wanting to identify with the abuser(s), in his past, because it is a position of strength. I look forward to hearing what Hermione has to say to him next. Will it be 'What is wrong with you? You defective git?' or more like ignoring him completely, because I totally agree with you that he would hate to be completly ignored. The hate he feels toward himself leaks out of him and spills over to others.

<i>"I always felt that to some degree Snape's bitter nature might stem from wanting to identify with the abuser(s), in his past, because it is a position of strength."</i>
That is so true. I never thought of it in those word, but you have it exactly right, I think. He takes the 'cycle of abuse' to a new level.
I think Hermione is going to be at a complete loss at how how behave toward him. She feels compassion and yes, a bit of pity toward him. But that is ofset by her hurt feelings and her belief that people are responsible for the choices they make. I don't think she's going to hate him, or perposely ignore him, but I think she's going to feel the ball is in his court.
That's the benifit of waiting to write each chapter until I've had feedback about what's been posted so far. Reading reviews and the thoughts of others helps me to reflect on what I feel about my characters and how I want the story to proceed. This was a big help, so thank you.

You are so very welcome. If ever in need call on me because I lurv the character Snape, all aspects of him.
Whoa, how is Severus going to dig himself out of the emotional pit he is in? That man needs some serious help!
I'm looking forward to reading more of this tale!
Response from Soul Bound (Author of A Living Hell)
Good point. lol It's going to take quite a shovel, and some serious introspection. He does need help. *nods*
