An annoying event causes Hermione to choose to spend the Christmas break in seventh year away from her best friends, but Dumbledore feels she needs someone to watch over her. How will Hermione react to the appearance of the Potions master on her doorstep -- and how will they interact when cooped up alone together for days on end? This story was written for the SS/HG Winter Exchange on Live Journal, for the prompt: A weekend alone for Hermione in the Granger's residence. Suddenly the Potions master turns up on her door step. For whom the bell rings, it rings for you.

Reviews for Send Not to Know
I am utterly speachless! Wow! Just re-read SSGH316's review because she says it just beautifully. We need more!!!!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I am happy to know that I rendered you speechless. One bottle of wine, five to six hours, and Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy on repeat will work every time, LOL! One more chapter, with plenty more lemons, and our journey will be done. Thank you for the lovely encouragement, my dear.
*squees like a happy fangirl* Yes, yes, yes! I love this chapter! It's all I could have hoped for and more. Some of my favorite lines of this entire story are in this chapter.
"The one I procured for you was much nicer." "But you haven't been here to denude the local parks."
...she couldn’t tell Severus that she went with Viktor because he was a black-haired hook-nosed grump, could she?
And my favorite of the entire story ...
Her chin came up a fraction. “I was in the courtroom today.” Now he did smile, a miraculous lightening of his features that was gone in an instant. “Yes, I saw you.” “No one wished to speak with Hermione Granger,” she said flatly. A strange expression of gratification touched his eyes. “Did that rankle?”
Again, I am blown away by the emotion your words evoke. Hermione's confusion, nervousness, insecurity ... all are palpable. Severus is nearly unreadable, as he should be, with just the right amount of hinting at his true emotions until he lays it all on the line with "Let's test that theory." Gah!
What I love so much about this chapter, and indeed all of your stories, is that as I am reading, I am feeling what Hermione is feeling. I am just as confused, nervous, and insecure about what is going on as she is! Severus is an unreadable to me as is to her! This, my dear author, is what makes you a master at your craft.
Oh, yes! Severus Snape may be the Master of Enchantment, but YOU are the Mistress of Enchantment, as you leave me wonderfully enchanted every time I read your work. Lovely, lovely chapter.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I'm glad you were able to *feel* it, doll. That's what I'm aiming for and I'm thankful that it works.
Mistress of Enchantment? Do I get a tiara? I'll take almost any title, if it comes with a tiara.
Seriously, though, that is a lovely, lovely compliment. Posting this story and having you and the other ladies review has been worth so much to me - it will give me some "fuel" to go on with my next project.
*hugs*

That's the best I can do!
Man, I'm all gooey now!!! What an absolutely WONDERFUL reunion!!!! Just WOW!I love how she didn't think it was truly him at first. ADORED the "Oh no you don't!" bit when she was going to faint. Too funny! That he took over when it came time to getting comfortable for explanations was sweet. And the teasing of her box of memories was too cute. But OH MY the lovemaking!!!!! You may be the Queen of UST, but you have another crown when it comes to beautifully done, HOT, sexy scenes. I swear I'm going to have flashes of that going through my mind for the rest of the day!!! WOOHOO!!!! Until next time..... *hugs*
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Gooey is good! I'm glad you liked the reunion. It ... rather wrote itself. Awww, do I get to be the Queen of UST? Too, too cool, thank you! I fear that there are many others who write circles around me when it comes to erotica, but I will say that when I *do* write lovemaking, I try to do it from the heart - if that makes any sense at all, LOL!
Thank you for your lovely, thoughtful comments, my dear!
That chapter was HOT! They sure don't believe in wasting anymore time do they. I can't wait to see what's next.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Thanks,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
! One more chatper to go. I think they believe they've wasted enough time.
Oh, you and those nasty evil cliffies need to stop attempting to induce a fangirl heartattack in me! *L* WHY did you have to stop the chapter there??!! The mob won't rest until we get some action!! *LOL*
In all seriousness though, I enjoyed this chapter, despite it's Snape-lessness Well, almost Snape-lessness anyway . . . the scene with Remus on the battlefield was heart-wrenching, even despite it's short description. I also enjoyed how you had Hermione trying (and failing) to rid herself of Severus's lingering hold on her through work and Viktor.
The scene in the courtroom I have only a small little itsy-bitsy squabble with, and that's only that I would imagine she'd get in a bit more trouble than the verbal reprimand Dumbledore metes out. But hey, it's your story and I realize you were under a deadline, so it's not that big of a deal.
Now if you'll excuse me, I must get back to being part of the angry mob of fanfic readers waiting to see how this ends!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Fangirl heart attacks are my speciality, you know. As an author, you know precisely why I stopped where I did!
I did get weepy when I wrote the bit about her searching the dead bodies for him. Glad to know it touched a chord in you.
*hugs* thanks for the enthusiasm, babe.
Ok, can I stop crying now? It's showing signs of a happy ending, though I didn't think that you'd really be that evil!Amazing chapter, great to get all the history of what happened, and was Snape in the courtroom when she snuck in there?I hope there's a update soon, I can't bear to wait for long, now I'd better get up of my lazy arse as I've just spent the whole morning here, real life calls, and I'm now way behind! But it was so worth it, you rock!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
It's been fun watching your reviews come in all morning and seeing you progress through the story, though I apologize in advance to your household for detaining you for so long!I'm glad you're enjoying it so much, and I hope to update sometime today. You rock, too!
Why oh why did she have to go and yawn then? You are a tease!Fab chapter, what can I say about Ron, will he ever learn?!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I AM a tease, LOL! But you know that about me, now! Poor Ron. He'll eventually grow up and act right.
I'm all warm and fuzzy after that chapter, it was so lovely!I just love the idea of Snape sledging, just thinking about it makes me laugh, such a great picture in my minds eye!And the hair washing, well, that just makes your insides go funny *swoon*But I am already starting to worry about what's going to happen once the holidays are over, when they are back at school and are teacher and student again, because it can't carry on as it is now can it, but they'll both have the memories of what did happen. Please tell me it's going to be a happy ending?!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Umm, sledging and hair washing - something about those things with that man is just delicious to contemplate.Life can't go on the same once they're back at school - you know it has to change. Don't make me tell you the ending! Argh! You'll know soon enough!
Wow! I'm really impressed at how quickly this story is being updated. I'm so in love with this story--but then, I love all of your stories. I just finished up re-reading the Master of Enchantment series. Any chance of another story in that saga? Again, wonderful, wonderful story.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
! I'm so pleased to know that you are enjoying this story - and to know that you liked the Master of Enchantment stories well enough to re-read them. I think there will be another story for MoE, yes. I very much appreciate you taking the time to drop me a note.
This is getting better by the chapter! I love the way they're getting along now, he kind of can't help but be drawn to the warmth of Hermione and her home can he?Several bits I really loved, the "nuked" bit was great, something he didn't know? Surely not! And "you cannot apparate with a fir tree!" followed by the foot stamping, for some reason really tickled me!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I agree that he is irresistibly drawn to Hermione and her home - comfort is alien but compelling. You liked my favourite bits! ;)
I do love it when they're snarky with each other! That first part was great, but now they're being quite nice, which is unexpected so early but then they have got to spend the hols together haven't they?He was very good when he was caring for her and I loved the menstrual cycle bit, 2 bottles of cognac, that made me giggle!I haven't had chance to check for updates for nearly a week, so am now off to read several chapters (such a lovely treat) instead of doing the housework!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Oh, no, naughty girl! Reading instead of housework!;) good job, actually!Yes, the caring for her when she was sick broke the ice rather quickly. Thanks for the note, my dear!
well, I didn't expect you to jump so far in the future, so I had to go back to the last chapter and make sure I hadn't missed one, lol. This was a fantastic chapter though, and lucky for you snape showed up before you ended it or I might be flaming right now.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
You're scaring me, now - please don't flame me!! *is scared*Sorry for the confusion, doll - and I'm glad you figured me out. I'll see what I can do to make that more clear - you're not the only one who mentioned being confused. Thanks so MUCH for the support.
Response from wilder0511 (Reviewer)
aaw, I would never seriously flame at you, I love your stories too much for that, and there are so few real quality writers in fanfiction when you consider all the writers out there, that I cherish everyone who keeps me looking out for their updates and any new stories like you do. As for my confusion, it was easy enough to figure out what was going on, so I wouldn't change a thing if I were you, besides I walk around with my head in a fog so much (probably from sleep deprivation cause I'm always here reading) that it was probably just me anyway, lol
This is such a gorgeous story.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Thank you so much, Jenonymous!
*smiles*So the man is back, eh? Muahahaha
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Did you doubt me? *grins* Now the fun begins ...
Oh you mean mean mean person!!! I finally get the time to read past the first chapter.... and here I am waiting for more... after that (and also suffering a good five minutes at the end of Part one, where the site decided to come up with a list of errors, and refused to show anything other than my profile page!!!)The next chapter simply must be up soon! Like asap... like now... *smile* I'm impatient... I'm sure you can tell *grin*I'm literally sitting on the age of my seat, and just moments ago I had my hands over my mouth in... well, nailed down glee (it is 2.37am and my parents and brother are asleep... lol) *Whimpers at being left hanging*
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
LOL! Well, I know exactly what you mean about "nailed down glee" so that you don't wake the family - and I take it as an enormous compliment!Next chapter should be up on Friday, sometime - that's USA time. Your enthusiasm makes me smile. Thanks for the note.
Ack! Don't stop there! She IS going to let him in, isn't she?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Ah, you gave me a big grin, there. Next chapter will be up on Friday, so you will see!
Oh god. First I'm sobbing my eyes out (yay, headache), and now I'm pulling my hair out! Which, if you know me yet, means that I loved it and I can't wait for more.
I'm glad that you acknowledge that behaving in such a way for ten whole years would not leave Hermione in a pale and lovely state, like a fine porcelain doll awaiting the return of her loved one. You paint quite a picture of reality ;)
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Well, I'm sorry for the headache - I get them too, when I cry - but I'm happy that you're feeling what I felt when I wrote it. That means we're communicating!Just as a note, it's been three years since their first Christmas together, rather than ten. And I agree that living in such misery for so long would not be conducive to health OR beauty! Thanks so much for your heartfelt note!
Ok I think I am changing my mind -- I don't want this story to go on forever. It is just too heart-breaking. I feel like Hermione can't breathe. You are one of those talented writers who can actually make your readers "feel" their characters. I know Hermions wants to open the door as well as she doesn't want to open it. And of course you leave us readers right there on the edge once again. Now I can't breathe. I know there are just a few more chapters and I plan to savor each one. Thanks for your time, JoAnne
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Joanne! I'm sorry for the heartbreak - but you know, it does my heart good to know that you are feeling what I feel as I write. I have a happy glow, from that. You're right about Hermione; she is quite torn in this moment, to know whether or not she should open the door. Two more chapters to go, my dear. Let's be brave and we can finish together.
My heart so totally broke on her behalf. I totally 'got your back,' Hermione Granger, Junior Spinster. As for THIS cliffie-- Evil! Evil! Evil!!!!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
LOL, YLang! Love the icon and the evil's!It does my heart good to know that your heart broke for her; so did mine. thanks for letting me know that! Some rain, for the fire-breathing icon! Next chapter will post sometime on Friday!
Ahh, now we're getting there. Maybe this is my favorite chapter. :) I swear, I could feel Hermione's melancholy and the scene with her searching for him on the battlefield is gut-wrenching. And, yes, I once again burst into tears when she begs Remus to tell her where he is. Oh my. I could feel her desperation and her growing frustration at hearing rumors but being given no details. Then she's running to the courtroom only to hear that no one wishes to speak to her. My heart broke for her.
But, now, now he is once again at her door and my heart is beating as fast I as imagine Hermione's to be.
I especially love this line: "She placed her eye back to the peephole and the tip of a wand ignited, becoming steadily brighter until it lit from below, in chiaroscuro, the gaunt planes and sharp angles of the unlovely countenance of Severus Snape." *sigh* Have I mentioned lately that this is why I fangirl Subversa? Because it is. It really is.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
And have I mentioned lately that this is why Subversa spends her weekends writing stories? Because of the deep satisfaction of receiving feedback from readers as attentive to nuance and detail as you are?Oh, GAH, it is so thrilling to me to read over and again from those of you wonderful readers who give me feedback that you felt Hermione's despair - it makes me want to punch the air and shout, "Yes!" Because we are communicating on a gut-level in those moments and it is utterly satisfying to me.Thank you, dearest.
need more updated soon please. love the story
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
! More to come very soon. Thanks for the note!
Whoa! I'm emotionally wrung out now. Poor Hermione. I'm sure poor Severus is a reasonable statement too tho. I'm so glad he's there. I feel like I should say more, but I'm simply sitting here gaping. That's such an ordeal. You presented it wonderfully though. It's just so much sadness. =( I think I need chocolate. hee!Now just don't keep us waiting for "next"! ^.^
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
*pets you and offers chocolate*Sitting here gaping from the ordeal is a reasonable response, I think. You know I won't keep you waiting!...long.
Thank you for bringing him back at the end if this chapter. I have sobbed through most of it. It started out at the begining with just moist eyes then by Krum was deep gut wrenching sobs. Then relief crying. Thanks for not leaving me on a downer. It is much easier to find a release while reading your elegant writing than to just be bummed out about my own life. Go get yourself a cookie. Your better than a therapist, and cheaper!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Dear Aurora, I am so pleased that you find my work to be useful to you. I am happy to provide a catharsis. Thanks for letting me know that the story has this effect on you. *hugs*
