An annoying event causes Hermione to choose to spend the Christmas break in seventh year away from her best friends, but Dumbledore feels she needs someone to watch over her. How will Hermione react to the appearance of the Potions master on her doorstep -- and how will they interact when cooped up alone together for days on end? This story was written for the SS/HG Winter Exchange on Live Journal, for the prompt: A weekend alone for Hermione in the Granger's residence. Suddenly the Potions master turns up on her door step. For whom the bell rings, it rings for you.

More! I need to read more soon! I'm really enjoying this so far.

Thanks,

! I'm happy to know that you're liking it. More to come soon!
Another good chapter. And I'm really liking how Snape's portrayed in here. "No, you can't," but then it ends up being, "Shall I help?" LOL Looking forward to more. :)
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I think Snape is bemused by it all - she treats him with kindness and affection, in spite of himself. Thanks, Southern!
You realize you're only enabling my "insatiable-ness", right? 2 in 1 day?? I might be in love with you now. heheheThe days after the migraine day are so sweet. But of course since Severus is in them they have a nice bit of tang too. I love how he "permitted" the girl the put him to work mixing dough. And his fondness of those biscuits too. And the shopping trip foibles were too funny.I can't imagine anyone but Harry having dreams that could possibly match the ones that Severus might have. Poor man.I won't beg for more, but I'll applaud loudly for this extra helping you've placed before me.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Well, the reviews feed my insatiability (is that a word?), as well, my dear. Yes, I'm feeding the beast that is your Snape addiction! I can't remember - have you read Master of Enchantment?
I do think there is something bittersweet drawing him to her; he wants the comfort, but he doesn't know it. I agree about the dreams he must have.
More to come soon!
Response from Bentwaters (Reviewer)
Oh yes, Mistress of the Enchanment, I've most definitely read Master of Enchantment. It's one of the stories that MADE me a Snape addict. (That and notsosaintly's Soothing Hands) So, does this mean you're my dealer?? Or are we just each other's enablers? Whatever works, right? ^.~
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Whatever is precisely correct. I'm curious, which side of the pond is your home?
Oh, and, I'm off to load the next chapter.
I really do like this interaction.? I am enjoying this story tremendously.?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I am so pleased to know you are enjoying this. Thanks for the note!
LOL...I just love the way you make Snape 'human' ; The biscuits, nightmares and compasion towards Hermione when she had a migraine. I wonder how you will get Snape into a shower, though. Just love it hun.Hugs Carmille
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I do believe that we are tantalised by the possibility of his humanity. I'm glad that you are enjoying my version of Severus in this story.
Maybe we'll get him clean in the next chapter ...
Thanks, Carmille!
There's so much I like about this chapter that I don't know where to start!
“If wishes were Thestrals, then beggars would ride,” he said dismissively.
That I will have to remember, because it sounds like something JKR would have her characters say . . . and I just like the way it sounds :p
“You cannot Apparate with a fir tree!”
*ROTFLMAO*
I love the addition of the nightmares, as well as Snape's weakness with Christmas biscuits (*gasps* Severus is human under all those layers?? *G*)
I wonder though, is Severus going to learn anything from the movies Hermione is watching?? It's such a great way to unthaw the Ice King ;)
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I am happy to know that you're enjoying this story, love. I'm glad you like my Potterverse-aphorism; this Severus says it more than once. This Snape is rather human beneath his layers, I think.
More to come about his reactions to her traditions. Thanks for the note!
I love her reaction when Severus first arrives -> complete indifference (after the initial outrage wears off, anyway)!!!
And then how he takes care of her while she has the migraine . . . I would love to be watched over in such a way *G*
*Runs off to read next installment*
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
She is really reining it in, at that point - and you know she can never remain really angry for very long! Oh, your bf has probably looked after you when you were ill in much the same way - it's a rather detached, parental sort of looking -after, I think.
Thanks for the note, love!
What a wonderful Christmas tale! I love it so far, and I can't wait for the next installment!! GG
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I'm glad you like it, doll. More to come soon! Thanks for the note!
I love Hermione in this chapter. This is her home, dammit! :)
I also enjoyed the glimpse of Snape under the snark.
And did I mention how much I adore that the each chapter title is the name of a Christmas song? I love that. *sighs*
Note: I thought I had posted this earlier but it disappeared. So if two practically idential reviews show up from me, you'll nknow what happened!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Yes, I'll know that your Doppleganger posted a review as well!
He is such a Slytherin, isn't he? You just never know what his motivation is for doing what he does ...
Yes, I wrote this story in October; to put myself in the spirit, I began playing Christmas music two months early! I made CDs and listened in the car and at work ... So, I couldn't resist the temptation to name the chapters after the songs.
*hugs*
Response from sshg316 (Reviewer)
If you do see my doppelganger, could you please send her over so she can clean my house? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Good luck with that plan, babe! LOL!
Response from sshg316 (Reviewer)
Are you saying that you're going to keep her if you see her? Are you going to enslave my doppleganger and force her to clean your house instead of mine? Well ... that's just mean and so ... so ... so Slytherin of you. *eyes narrow suspiciously* I thought you were Ravenclaw. You've been spending too much time with Slytherins, haven't you?
After further consideration, however, you may keep her (for a while) if it will enable you to write more! But then I'll really need her back so I can read more.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes!
*nods*
'K.
Hmm.... quite innocuous for a first day together. The calm before the storm? Though I do sympathize with Hermione this time, migraines are a bitch to deal with.Severus being so helpful and self-effacing. Ok, where's the catch? Not one biting remark or sneer? Is Severus losing his touch? Can't be, can it? ;)Looking forward to the next chapter. Woohoo!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
My take on the matter is that Severus is a Head of House and probably has to look after sick students upon occasion. He's at the Grangers' for the long haul; he can't blow up and storm out. I think he'll take the path of least resistance and try to keep a low profile.
Unless, of course, she defies him. ;)
Response from mmesnape (Reviewer)
Oooooo! Quite a devious concept, I love it! Go Hermie, GOOOOOO! LOL
Here it is! I'm so happy to see your latest story here.
I must say, I loved your punishment for Ron and Romilda. I also like that you used Ms. Vane as Ron's paramour rather than the typical stand-bys of Lavender Brown or Susan Bones.
Ooohh, Snape is not happy. Which means he's gonna be snarky and you know I do so adore a snarky Snape!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Well, Hermione was not a happy camper, you know; her punishment for them was a la Marietta Edgecombe.
Snarky Snape! Snarky Snape!
"Perhaps she was beginning her menstrual cycle – in which circumstance Dumbledore would owe him two bottles of cognac, rather than one!" -- I literally fell off my chair from laughing so hard at this line. That was quite the first day to spend together. Especially after the "introduction" the night before.I'm ready for more! ^.^
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Insatiable wench!
I'm glad you liked that little bit. The man is a head of house for a school full of adolescents; he knows all about premenstrual tension!
More to come soon!
You have no idea how happy I was to hear the story is complete, I love frequent updates so I will be sure to check every day for a new chapter. The story is great so far.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Wilder! Yes, I'm enjoying posting this one and hearing what you all have to say about it, so I will post it all pretty quickly. Thanks so much for the encouragement!
WOW. I love it so far. Its amazing...makes me smile. I can't wait to read more.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Love the screen name, Gah Meep! Thanks for the note; I will update soon!
I like. Keep it coming.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Thanks,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
! I will!
Hehehe. When I saw that you'd updated right after I'd read that other chapter, it gave me a broad smile. I like that they are getting along at least. :) Thanks for posting.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I thought having him look after her would take some walls down immediately. Hermione is such a fair person, I think it would be hard for her to think ill of someone who is kind to her. Thanks, Southern!
Ah, I can't wait to see how this unfolds. Good start.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Squee! You reviewed me! Thanks for the note, Southern
I've never figured Ron and Hermione to be a good match.? I like this beginning.?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I have to agree about Ron and Hermione not being a good match. They have Harry and the war in common, but when the smoke has cleared, will it be enough to hold them together?
Thanks for the note, my dear!
Oh, a sneaky Dumbledore--I like him like that!Interesting start. I look forward to more of your captivating prose.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Everyone assumes that Dumbledore is up to something here ... okay, he probably is.
Thank you, Orm Irian - more to come, soon!
Ooooooh, such an interesting start!! I see you've taken the Prat!Ron approach too, with this story, and I love it! *L* What I wouldn't give to see him with "cheat" slashed into his bum!! Hermione did that, right?? *L*
I really like how you're getting Severus and Hermione together for this story :) Damn Albus and his omniscent ways!! *L* Well, actually, it's more fair to call them dubious, I suppose . . . but regardless, I'm interested to see where this goes!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Yes, poor Ron gets short shrift from me, I must admit. Others, including Amr and Bambu, have done so much with a well-developed Ronald Weasley in their stories.
Yes, Hermione was responsible for both the "cheat" and "slut" designations!
Albus must be a bit of a Seer himself ...
Thanks for the note, love!
Lovely to see a new story from you. I enjoyed Hermione's little revenge. How do you explain that in the shower?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Exactly! How is he going to explain that little detail? And she know, from what she did to the "Sneak" in OoTP, that she can make a scar that will last! She should have had it read, "Weasley is our Cheat."
Thanks for the note, love!
Oh that Ron can be quite the git. (he's just one of those boys that will take until his 30's to fully grow up)Albus always knows new and improved ways to "meddle". hehe! Severus seems to find himself involved in those plans more and more. Poor guy! HAHAHA!! I can't wait for more!!!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
You know, I quite agree with you about Ronald. He is one of those boys who fulfill an old dictum: Men are beasts until they're 30.
You know, I somtimes wonder if Albus does a bit of Divination of his own ...
More to come soon!
Oh my...This is looking so good. Keep it up.Hugs Carmille.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Thanks, Carmille! The story is completed and I will update regularly. Thanks for the note - and the vote of interest!
It's already complete?? Then there's no use in me trying to beg for a happy ending.? Sigh.? Anyway, I love your work and was very happy to see this new story.? ?You've set the stage nicely and now we all anxiously await the ringing of the doorbell. BTW, John Donne is my favorite poet (yeah, I know I'm a bit disturbed) so I was pleased to see a reference to him.? ?Thanks for your work!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Cerydden! It is already complete, but you are welcome to beg - the Potions master likes begging.
Just not from 18 year old girls.
I'm so pleased that you enjoy my stories. I'll be honest; I haven't read much Donne. I knew the "no man is an island" thing was his, and have often thought that kind of applied to Snape, but I had no idea until I Googled the reference that "for whom the bell tolls" was in the same piece! Awesome!
