An annoying event causes Hermione to choose to spend the Christmas break in seventh year away from her best friends, but Dumbledore feels she needs someone to watch over her. How will Hermione react to the appearance of the Potions master on her doorstep -- and how will they interact when cooped up alone together for days on end? This story was written for the SS/HG Winter Exchange on Live Journal, for the prompt: A weekend alone for Hermione in the Granger's residence. Suddenly the Potions master turns up on her door step. For whom the bell rings, it rings for you.

Reviews for Send Not to Know
Ron, Ron, Ron. Will he ever learn? At least the boy was smart enough to know Harry should do the talking.
Seeing so much of Snape's POV in this chapter was fantastic. I love how pleased he was about Hermione choosing to stay with him rather than return to the Burrow. I also love how he stayed on the stairs to listen to their conversation What kind of spy, or Slytherin for that matter, would he be if he passed up an opportunity to eavesdrop?
And of course, once again you have driven me to tears. And yet, when my emotions were at their peak, you threw something like the following line in to jerk me out of it: " The twisting feeling beneath and slightly to the left of his sternum was undoubtedly some form of indigestion." :) I love that line. And again, comes his decision to forego thoughts of the outside world and concentrate on Hermione. *sigh*
Oh, the dancing. I love the dancing. And then you practically kill us all with the almost kiss. Loved the yawn, though. :)
A wonderful chapter. I'll take a page from Hermione's book and say I'm having such a lovely time reading this story again.

It is so much fun writing from inside Severus' head. No man could fail to feel triumphant to have a woman choose him over her two very best friends. When I was writing that bit, I didn't know he was on the stairs, listening, until I got to the end of the scene - and then I was like, Of COURSE he's listening - he's a SLYTHERIN!It pleases me to engage your emotions, love - that means I'm doing my job correctly. Were you one of the ones who identified my story as mine, out of the exchange? Thanks for the lengthy review. It makes me happy!

Remember, I "sent" you a dozen roses after the reveal? Oh, yes, I knew it this was yours. How could I not? After all, I do fangirl Subversa!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Honey, you fangurl Subversa so excellently that you spotted that plagiarist - only someone intimately acquainted with my work could have done so. you ROCK!
Response from sshg316 (Reviewer)
Now you have me blushing! If you weren't so rockin', then I wouldn't have read MoE over and over!
Okay, enough of the mushy stuff! I'm off to read chapter 6 of Send Not to Know!
I am going to be breathless until your next update.....please don't keep me on tenterhooks. I do have an increadiblly stupid question to ask? What do Brits watch for the holidays?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Aurora! As I'm a Yank, I'm afraid I couldn't tell you what the Brits watch for the holidays. I would imagine they watch quite a bit of Dickens' though, wouldn't you? Scrooge, Scrooge, and MORE Scrooge! More to come soon, my dear; thanks for the note!
But... But... They were sooo close. That was an evil thing to do to loyal readers. I am really enjoying this story and just had to drop a note to say I can't wait to see what comes next. Maybe they can stay alone together through the New Year holiday. Thanks for sharing, JoAnne
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, JoAnne! At this point, I think they're both wishing that their time alone will never end. I'm so happy to know that you're enjoying the story so much. Stick with me; we about four more chapters to the end. Cheers!
what the??? They were so close, all I can say is hurry up with the next chapter, I can hardly wait. Love it, as always.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
*evil grin*I'm (in)famous for such tactics, Wilder, I'm warning you now!More to come soon, love - I'm so glad you like it!
ooh frustration.Do update soon.Elen
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Elen! I think Severus would agree with you! More to come soon, I promise. Thanks for the note!
awwwwww... Sooooo close and jet sooooo far.you are so evil.... *LOL*Just leave us hanging and let us starve to death of suppressed emotions. Well, you have done it again. A very nice piece of work. Hugs Carmille
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Carmille! Love the little rain guy, LOL!Yes, I'm a very, very mean author. Will suppressed emotions kill you if not expressed?Well, let's not experiment with that! I'll update again very soon. In the meanwhile, thank you for your encouragement and support of this story!
Another very nice chapter!
I loved Harry and Ron's unexpected arrival at Hermione's house . . . Snape's baiting was priceless!
Nice touch with the addition of Hermione's angry crying as well. I suffer from the same thing, and hate it just as much as she does!!
“Hermione, don’t,” he murmured.
*Looks stern while secretly trying to hide her giggles* I have to let you know that I'm just a little upset right now that Hermione had to choose the moment she did to yawn. They were so close, and Severus was letting himself go for it!!
Of course, it is all about the tension
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
*g* I love it when Snape is snarky - except when it's pointed at Hermione. It's SO much fun for him to get his own back with Harry and Ron.I, too, suffer from angry crying. It actually holds me back from applying for a promotion where I would have to deal with angry clients! GRRR.Oh, you liked Severus' moment of tenderness as he watches her through the window. Poor Severus, always watching from the outside! As an author, you know exactly why she had to yawn! Exactly.You----Ess---TEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my goodness the UST is sooooo THICK!!!!!!!!!!! But at least I'm seeing some cracks in it! I giggled at how Severus got his digs in at the boys. And of course, they reacted to the situation with their usual "grace" HA! It was nice to see Hermione choose Severus over them without any "fuss". She already had her major revenge on Ron so she didn't need to hex him again. Altho he probably could have used it. And Harry just needs time for his brain to catch up with him, as he showed by calmly wishing her Happy Christmas and kissing her cheek as they left. The evening was so sweet. Just beautiful. My favorite line is "and her body flowed with his as if two streams were joined to flow together to the great ocean". It's just one of the lovliest descriptions I've ever read. You continue to amaze me. Happily so, of course.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
*pat self on back*I excel at UST. I'm so glad you enjoyed Severus baiting the boys. Harry is definitely the more sane of the two when it comes to Hermione. Snape, on the other hand ...I'm glad you liked that line. I was rather proud of it. You continue to delight me with your reviews. Good reader!*offers you a Reader Treat: Chocolate-Dipped Severus*
Hi hun.I simply must say that you a brilliant writer. The slow and easy steps towards 'friendship' is so fine balanced that you keep your readers wanting for more and still you have not once crossed the line of non relevant nonsense. ( In my opinion, though *LOL* )Very well written indeed. I really do like the 'tumbling in the snow' scene. It makes me wonder if Severus ever had a moment like this when he was a child. I know I'm a bit emotional. Please bear with me!Kep it up.Hugs Carmille.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, Carmille! Wow, thank you for the lovely compliment. I'm glad to know I haven't crossed the "nonsense" line - though, if you'd care to respond, I would be fascinated to know the types of things that might be irrelevant at this point.
I adored them tumbling in the snow as well. I hope he had some fun like that when he was young, but I don't imagine his childhood as having been a happy one, I'm sad to say.
I appreciate the emotional reaction - if I wring emotion from you, I'm getting the job done properly.
Hugs back!
Response from carmille (Reviewer)
Hello Hun,I sorry to say that I don't have much time to spare.Though I would love to point out things that might be considered 'irrelevant nonsense' from this point on when I have the opportunity.Hugs Carmille.
aw, dammit. that was the perfect opportunity for MORE lemons. . . . hawt. I want more.
glad she sent the boyz a 'packin. Who wouldn't want to be alone with the tall, dark and dashing PM?!? Where's the mistletoe for those two???
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
LOL! More lemons than what was needed for the punch? Wicked girl!
I can't imagine anyone who would not wish to be alone with the enigmatic Potions master - but he scorns the idea that he needs mistletoe ...
Another good chapter, and I loved Harry/Ron in it. The way he treated them, and their reactions seemed perfect. Ron's such a dumbass. LOL Ah, the almost-kiss! Nicely done.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I'm really, really being mean to Ron in this story. I'll try to be nice to him another time and make up for it! I do adore some Severus-derision, when it's not pointed at Hermione. Thanks so much, SW!
Always a delight to read one of your stories! I can't believe I missed this at the exchange.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi, doll! Oh, I don't want you to miss it, for sure! I can't believe *I* missed your review! Welcome to the party!
Restraint was what was now required.
NOOO!! Snape can't clam up now!
I hope, by the way their last conversation went, that he will let himself see her as he wants to but won't allow - that Hermione's a little more grown up than he wants to admit! *L*
I absolutely adored the cocoa conversation, by the by. The entire thing was crystal clear in my mind, right down to:
“Cheek,” he murmured and was oddly pleased with her soft, easy laughter.
That made my insides swirl nicely
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Inside whirling! WHOOT! Isn't that the hoped-for response in all of our romantic storytelling endeavours??You know how disagreeable Snape can be. If he's determined to clam up, he can certainly try - whether he will succeed is another question altogether! I do think he's torn regarding her level of maturity. There will be some more about that conflict in upcoming chapters. Thanks for the review, doll!
oh boy, this is a delicious new year's treat! tobogganing, homebaked biscuits, etc.--it's soooo cozy--and romantic. . . . dumbledore is the world's worst secret slytherin, he he!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Do you think he had this outcome in mind when he sent Severus there? That seems to be the general consensus! I'm glad you find it delicious, my dear. Thank you!
I am enjoying this story a lot; It really draws me in every time I read.? I love a good bit of tension between these two!?
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
! Sorry I missed your review, before. I, too adore unresolved sexual tension in this 'ship; it's probably my favourite thing. Thanks so much for stopping by to say "hey"!
This is a FANTASTIC story! I can't wait for more!~ j
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
I'm so glad you're enjoying it! More to come soon!
I am enjoying this story so much. I love the relationship you're developing between Hermione and Severus. I can't wait for the next chapter!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Hi,
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
. I'm so pleased to know that you're enjoying the story. I liked the slow, easy development of the relationship between them, as well. Thanks for the note!
Wonderful. They really are in their own private world. But can it last? I hate to think of the outside world imposing on them, but it's bound to happen sooner or later...I look forward to the next installment.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
You are right there with me on this one, Orm Irian. They are living completely detached from reality, in their own little cocoon, and you are absolutely correct that it cannot go on forever. It's always sad when Eden comes to an end. Thank you for the insightful note!
Loving this story. Don't know if it's me, or the story, but it seems to move along at a nice unhurried pace but covering plenty of ground as it goes. Though the title is a bit of a tangle to spit out!
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
The title is a bit of a bug-a-bear. The person for whom I wrote the story gave the prompt referring to "for whom the bell tolls," and "Send Not to Know" comes from the poem. Okay, I'm a pretentious twit! Seriously, though, I'm glad you like the pace. I like it, as well -- it really builds a foundation for the relationship, and I have had experiences similar, where short, intense acquaintances became lifelong friends. Thanks for the note!
I was giggling madly at Snape sledding. So unbelievably adorable in a strange sort of way. I found it touching that he decided it's okay to take this time for himself. After all, this story is all about that, isn't? He's anchoring himself at a safe harbor, away from the reality of his life, if only for a little while. He's given himself permission, at least to a certain extent, to enjoy himself.
Oh my gosh, the hair washing! *giggles* Is that a fantasy for all Snape fanatics?
Taking the tree from the park is one of my favorite parts of this whole story - it just seems so Snape-ish.
And now, they're talking and building a friendship. *sighs* I love that. We don't often get to see that in fanfiction. We're too busy getting to the romance. I know we'll get to that, but I really enjoyed that you took the time to show the foundation for such a relationship. And the last two sections were so bittersweet. The juxtaposition of their feelings on their budding friendship was perfect. Such a lovely combination of hope and melancholy. Only you, my dear, seem to generate such emotion for me.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Well, my pet, not everyone reads as carefully as you do - and truly *loving* Severus helps. I can tell you do, because you plug into *my* feelings so adroitly.
This is meant to be a sanctuary for him from his frantic, frightening life as the double agent; their isolation gives them permission to "go there" in a way they would never do if in the middle of their regular lives. At this point, Hermione considers him to be her dear, close, new friend - she does not yet recognize the feelings as attraction. Snape knows it's a bittersweet combination.
When I first read Snape's reaction to Hermione "nuking" her porridge, I almost spit out my oatmeal, I laughed so hard. Excellent! Next time my kids give me trouble about leftovers, I'm going to tell them to eat their electromagnetically radiated food.
They're making cookies together. *sigh* Wish Snape would make cookies with me. *grumbles*
"If wishes were Thestrals, then beggars would ride." I love it when you do stuff like that! It always makes me smile.
White Christmas is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies. I adore Bing Crosby. So I had to laugh when Snape's response was "The man actually wanted bad weather."
I love how's she's taking care of him at night unbeknownst to him. Gives me the warm fuzzies. :)
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
The "nuking" deal was one of my very favourite things in this chapter - I could not resist, and was SO relieved when MagicAlly said it was a known phrase in Britain. Whew! He's probably a bossy kitchen helper, you think?
Thank you for liking my Thestral phrase! *preens*
I feel the same way about WC and old Bing - it was, of course, my Slytherin who gave me Snape's response to the movie.
The warm fuzzies are exactly where you're supposed to be right now - just where Hermione is!
Oh my, this is definitely a Winter Wonderland as the chapter title proclaims. They're both so funny in that they think so much alike but don't put those feelings into words. Pretty stupid for two such verbose people. =)I'm hard pressed to pick one favorite part of this but if I had to choose I think I'd go with Hermione washing Severus' hair. How domestic and sweet, but once again all those hidden feelings and wants just not aired. Can't wait to see what the next chapter brings. In answer to you question. I'm a Texas girl at the moment, but grew up an Air Force Brat and actually spent the best years of my unmarried life over in England. I'd love to go back some day. I know the base we were at is no longer there, but all of the "local" places would be a blast to see again. One of the places we would go to was actually called Snape Maltings if you can believe it. Guess I was destined for this ship years ago! ^.^
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Ok, now this is getting spooky. I am a Texas girl as well. North Central, to be exact. I know it's tough to be an Air Force brat and have to move all the time, but I do envy you the travel. I've never been out of the US.
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. It may just be my favourite, because I think I'm ever so much better at UST than t'other thing
It may take a little longer for chapter the next, as I go back to work tonight.
If you'd be interested in chatting e-mail, sent me a note from the contact author link on my page and I'll write you back!

! Thanks go much for the e-mail, as well, regarding the use of the word "block." I appreciate alert readers!
I'm pleased to know that you're enjoying this little jaunt; the next update should be within the next day or two. Cheers!
What a fun chapter. I like their closeness and then denial of it. :) Looking forward to more.
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
Yeh, I figured he, at least, would fight it every step of the way, and she would deceive herself that her feelings are about friendship rather than attraction. Thanks, Southern!
are we going to see some hermione and severus lemons soon
Response from Subversa (Author of Send Not to Know)
The rating is for later in the story - but it is complete in 9 chapters and will all be posted within a week, I imagine.
Response from harrypotterfan2005 (Reviewer)
cool i love your hermione and severus stories
