Lovely chapter, even with the ruthless cutaway to Hermione's flashback right when last chapter's cliffie was about to be resolved. But I put away my pitchfork, because (a) the flashback was so dark and mysteriously intriguing; and (b) you didn't leave us dangling over that cliff-edge. Your skill is upping my anxiety about whatever Hermione has forgotten. I assume that she's forgotten how *good* it was with Severus, but you've made this just that little smidge edgy enough that I'm a bit worried that she's been compelled to forget something bad. I don't THINK you'd do that...would you? See how good you are at this?

. I will try to return the favor just a wee bit: We'll see into Severus' POV in the next chapter. Just a taste, but we have to begin somewhere.

There is nothing romantic about a forced sexual encounter.
Response from Subversa (Author of Transcendent Quality of Remembrance)
I absolutely agree with you. There is nothing remotely romantic about what happened between them in this chapter.

Why does this chapter need to end so soon?! You did really really good once again, subversa! Now there is just this long week I need to survive somehow until the next chapter ;)Okay and now onto some (more or less) objective commentray. Honestly: I'm getting more and more confused about the relationship of Hermione and Severus with every sentence I read. Obviously both of them are attracted to the other one. And neither of them know how to deal with it. They kind of act like teenagers in my opinion.I don't think Dumbledore meddled with their memories though. If he had erased the "good" memories in their relationship he wouldn't have permitted them to stay in one room. Too much a risk for some thing to surface again. But something is definitely missing. The part about their past was very enlightening though. At least it explains why Hermione seems conviced that Snape doesn't find her attractive at all and believes he does not want anything to do with her. He can be quite a git sometimes, can't he?Oh and that second part...let's just agree that while he can be a git he sometimes comes quite close to being a god ;) I have a feeling that he wanted to ask something different from "Are you prepared to sleep now?" He seems far to uncomfortable for this simple question. I mean: He wasn't uncomfortable when he pinned her to the bed and told her he would be attending to her needs! So why for such a simple question? I would so love his version of this!So that's it. I'm just going to sit back and stare at the main page of the Petulant Poetess for the rest of the week whenever I switch on the PC and wait for more...At least there is only a little cliffhanger and not an evil cliffhanger of doom like last week... Find comfort in the small things or stuff like that.Keep on with the good work! And have some cookies *hands cookie jar*

Yay! Tiny lemons! I do wonder what was going through Severus' mind during this encounter. Can't wait to read the next chapter!

We'll see a wee bit of what he thinks in the next chapter. And your "tiny lemons" comment got the song "Tiny Bubbles" going through my mind. Hee.

Oh, you are devilish, cutting away like that. Positively cruel. The sexual tension in this story is unbelievable, and seems like it's close to bubbling over. Can't wait. ;)

AUGH EVIL CLIFFHANGER OF DOOOOOOOOOM!Hermione's behaviour is very "off". I'm surprised nobody (Harry/Ron/Ginny/Molly) have called her on it yet. Molly especially is experienced enough to know the difference between typical teenage flightiness and this near complete personality change of Hermione's. It's clear she has had some sort of memory altering something, whether it was "that thing with the Death Eaters", or something she did to herself because she was disturbed about her attraction to Severus, or something that someone else "on her side" did to her (most probably Dumbledore, but he may not be the one. AND, I'm beginning to think that Severus is wholly unaware of it. He can certainly be a bastard, but his bevahiour is of someone being shunned; I would think that if he had reason to believe or suspect her memory of "them" had been altered, in the first place he would SAY something to her about it, and in the second, he would do something to help her recover (or gain) her memory back, even if it is only sharing his memories of them together. I had a feeling Severus was going to tell Hermione he would "attend to" her sexual needs. As her husband, it is his job after all. But I am very worried about her upcoming reaction to this proclamation; I suspect she's going to resist and anger and/or upset him, or cry, which isn't likely to end well, or mentally talk herself out of enjoying anything he does to/for her to try to help her deal with her sexual frustration, or even (quite possibly worst of all), tell him, enjoy it, and STILL shun him in the morning (which would be particularly boneheaded and cruel on her part, but her behaviour is very erratic). The thing is, I don't suspect that, even if they are intimate "tonight" and she DOES enjoy it, that things are going to be resolved between them. But, she better get her stuff together. Everyone's noticing how standoffish she's being to him (he most CERTAINLY is), and if they're talking about it, anyone who hasn't noticed is certainly going to. If she acts affectionate in public and then standoffish in private (which appears to be at least temporarily beyond her abilities), I think that's only going to hurt Severus' feelings worse, and his strengths don't tend to lean toward reacting "well" to hurt feelings. I frankly kind of hope he knocks her socks off tonight, and either "forgets" to cast a silencing charm or doesn't cast a very strong one (for whatever reason) so that the others will A) hear and be slightly thrown off course and B) ask her why she's being so ridiculous toward him.I think what NEEDS to happen is that they're going to have to be alone in the same room at the same time, and that he's going to have to ask her what the hell her problem is. He's apparently not a morning person and in any case it'd be a little unreasonable, even for him, to confront her first thing in the morning (although if she doesn't leave him any choice, he certainly isn't above taking advantage of mental fog).He IS trying. Not only does she not see that, she's not trying at all, and that's unfair.

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed reading through your reflections on the chapter! I jumped right on the roller coaster and went with you. Bottom line, I agree with you about Severus: He's trying to be civil - maybe even caring - but we still don't know everything that Hermione knows that's coloring her interactions with and thoughts about him.

"Tell me what you need, and I will attend to it."... "I NEED A NEW CHAPTER!" she wailed, flinging herself away from the laptop in frustration. Oh, Subversa, you are completely playing me like a violin, and I have no complaints. I am very worried about what's going on with Hermione's memory, though.

'There is a bathroom outside this door that will vanish in half an hour. If you despise sharing with a horde of people, as I do, you will get up and make use of it.'Now that's rather an olive branch! He's being quite thoughtful.'I just found out,' she lied desperately. 'I … I haven't told him yet. Please don't mention it until I've had a chance to tell him.'And she, in return, is lying to him about her future plans.~Sighs.~'You're as pale as a ghost. Perhaps you should lie down,' he said, his concern palpable. 'Go to bed early and get some rest.'And she lets her chance pass her by! 'No wife of mine, Hermione Snape, is going to lie in my bed and pleasure herself as if I am not here.'Yep, with his spy instincts and that abnormally large nose, she should have guessed he would notice.'Now,' he continued in the same even tone, 'tell me what you need, and I will attend to it.'OMG!~Swoons dead away.~

He had kept her safe. That had been no idle promise on his part. And what had she done, beyond flouting and aggravating him?His bargains are not made lightly and he takes his duties very seriously. She can see that, but she doesn't seem to ba able to return the favor. But as she trembled beside him, he shifted in his sleep, turning towards her, and the sandalwood and musk of his signature scent wafted over her, like an incitement to riot.Oh, my! She does have it bad! She wants him so much, but his behaviour does anything but reassure her. She's found enough Gryffindor bravery to pleasure herself next to him. Perhaps she can find a wee bit more to actually let him know how she feels!

Ah, darlin', you love him the way I do. It's a bittersweet emotion, to see how much he gives of himself and how little he receives in return. ~hugs you~Yeah, she has it bad, but she really, really doesn't want to. And at this point in the story, I think she would rather die than have him know her feelings.

That did not, of course, mean that the professor was particularly graceful about it. And neither had she been, countering his snide nastiness with her shrill defensiveness.Ah, well, it worked! Just not an obvious happily ever after for them. However, she has a rather visceral response to him and he's obviously jealous and possesive of her. I don't blame him for wanting to keep up the image of a real marriage. He's done his duty and shouldn't have to look foolish, too! He must be in agony forced to stay in this small house with so many people he dislikes or feels dislike him.~Wishes Hermione would be a bit more sensitive.~

Oh, me too! It hurts my heart to love him as I do and to see him having to swallow the humiliation of having his wife behave as if she'd rather be anywhere, doing anything, than be with him. I don't blame him for wanting to keep up the image of a real marriage. He's done his duty and shouldn't have to look foolish, too! <== This is the crux of the matter than just wrings my heart for him.Thank you for commenting, sweetie.

Ron flushed. 'Not that you aren't sharing too,' he muttered.Oh, my! Hermione does seem rather perturbed. This is anything but Nirvana for her.'I would like to be alone with my wife.' It would appear that Albus has been his usual meddling self. Sure Remus isn't expected to sacrifice and the boys get a quidditch and chess holiday. Hermione? She's married, rather unwillingly it would seem, at least on one snarky person's part.I am fascinated by this retelling from Book 5!~Scurries onward.~

Oh, Subversa, you've outdone yourself this time. What I love most about your stories is that I get so sucked in that I forget that it's not about me. I felt like I was about to come out of my skin, being so cooped up with these nosy do-gooders. You can't blame her friends for being curious about her marriage, or marriage in general. And the Weasley women just want to help her. But she is the type who needs her solitude, and she isn't getting it any time soon. Why is she going to Salem? Is there a reason for this particular school, or is it just where she applied and was accepted? I hope she tells him soon and that he doesn't freak out. But, what was she thinking? Did she think it would be okay to leave him at some point? Did she think he would follow her? I suppose, actually, that she figured that once she was out of Hogwarts she no longer needed to stay married. She did say at one point her plans were put on hold. Was there any significance to Snape making Lupin come outside with him that morning?I, for one, am glad that he confronted her at the end. I mean, I was still torn between cheering and cringing, but the awkwardness couldn't go on forever. Its better that he spoke up. I think he is being totally sincere when he offers to "assist" her, but I fear how she will react. Will she be honest about her confused feelings? If they are going to have sex (or whatever he chooses to do for her) it would be really bad of her to not enjoy it, but just endure. Or to thoroughly enjoy it, but then run. I am feeling so bad for both of them. I get the feeling that there are memories she has lost, but he retains, but he doesn't let on that is the case. Did they have something great, and now he has to watch his wife act as if she doesn't know or like him? Or are memories missing because something bad happened? I think its the former but ... but ... I have so many questions! To be honest, while reading this, I feel almost like Hermione does. Like I am following along just fine, but there is something just out of reach that I am missing. But most of all, could they just please talk? I know that would ruin all of our fun, but I can't help thinking that it would do them both good to get some things out in the open. I think they could be good together if they could get on the same page. I'm not feeling terribly confident on that front.I should stop talking. You seem to give me diarrhea of the mouth. :)

There is so much about her recent life that Hermione doesn't seem to remember... either that or she has developed multiple personalities...
In Chapter 1, which incidentally (?) began with the quote "From the start we swore that we'd never involve the heart," we learned that for Christmas Harry had given Hermione a book she had very much wanted: Transcendent Quality of Remembrance by Professor Moneta Muninn. "She had particularly wanted this book because its author was the head of a project at a wizarding university, where the phenomenon of memory was under research. Hermione was fascinated by the subject..." And it was at that moment that the Headmaster entered the Gryffindor Common Room- an almost unheard of occurrance. The other ladies at Forest Haven have begun to notice that all is not all is as it should be between Hermione and her husband. 'She never touches him—not ever.' But she continues to find his scent is like Amortentia to her. She is drawn to him, becomes needy for his presence, and then she immediately finds herself horrified by the thoughts, "memories," and dreams she has about him. At breakfast that morning she let slip that she planned to go to Salem University, and then tried to get Molly and Fleur to mention nothing about it to Severus. Is possible that Professor Moneta Muninn, the author of Transcendent Quality of Remembrance is at Salem?Hermione seems to be experiencing some sort of transcendence in regard to her memories. I'm beginning to wonder if she hasn't been cursed by some kind of "avoidance spell" to counteract her natural attraction to Severus. Dumbledore could certainly have come up with this kind of "fail safe" to keep Hermione from remembering the truth, but to what purpose? Or has she been injured and is a coma? Is she just having dreams about everything going on at Forest Haven? Dumbledore again comes to mind. He is an accomplished enough Legilimens to have planted all these convoluted and conflicting "memories" in her mind. Certainly Severus doesn't seem to like it that she avoids being alone with him... 'No wife of mine, Hermione Snape, is going to lie in my bed and pleasure herself as if I am not here. 'Now,' he continued in the same even tone, 'tell me what you need, and I will attend to it.'Holy shite, Batman! What is going on here? Thank you for this really awesome chapter. It's brimming with clues, but I can't get a bearing on just what (and more importantly, why) all this is happening. I am so looking forward to the next chapter!!!BethPS- At the dinner table, what did Severus mean when he whispered in Hermione's ear 'Young witches inevitably fancy … someone,' he replied. 'I wonder who that might be ... for you.'

Hehe, what a beautiful threat - "No wife of mine, Hermione Snape, is going to lie in my bed and pleasure herself as though I'm not here." To be fair he has a point, with no possible come back, especially given his subsequent offer. "Tell me what you need and i will attend to it". So pitty and elegant. Also, love the description of Hermione listening to his breathing. Nice.
