Seven years after the final battle: Severus is neither here nor there - and is apparently unwanted, dead or alive, until a small black kitten pins his cloak to a cobblestone. Hermione learns that now and then life rests on the flip of a friendly coin. Does love have the power to cancel time? Only the cats know for sure, and they can't talk.

Reviews for In Spirit
The doubling is troubling. And soooo complicated! Crooks and MiMi and now!Severus and then!Severus and poor both Hermiones!
~brain-flail~
~agonizes~
Mean!Ari is making things crazy!
Wait. Why does that surprise me?
~agonizes anyway~
This uncertainty is exquisitely painful, you know. Evil Author.
is equal to the square root of -1 over two cats to the power of the written word.
Exactly my point.
Joy. ~sniffles~ God, that's bittersweet.
Demetrios' historical re-stagings (with accompanying orchestration) are a romp through your unfettered imagination. Did I say esoteric? Ari-teric?
And they both have the most deliciously disturbing thoughts on opposite sides of that door ...
Well, I'm glad I stopped last night to savor their kiss! Because this was a blow, to me, to Severus, to Hermione, and to Ron. MiMi's constant interpolations and cereal comments are simply priceless.
Oh, he was NOT happy with her - mostly because she made him feel confuzzled about a 12 year old. Well, can't entirely blame him. But what are you dooooooooooing??? ~rushes to next chapter~
Crooks seems to go a bit beserk-o when Hermione has close interaction with the Professor. Interesting. The doubling of the memories is fascinating, and how appalling for 26 year old Hermione in the body of her 12 year old self ...
It was ... primal. Oh yes, Author, you made me feel that, right down to the tips of my toes.
And it just got better from there.
Your use of language is symphonic in its power and lyrical in its beauty. This chapter was so glorious that I won't read another tonight. I'll savor this one properly.
... picking up where I left off, very nearly a year ago.
somehow inflecting the pause with an entire treatise on the question of Demetrios’s sanity. How Very Severus!
And bouncing about, as only Ariadne can, from Pythagoras to Aristotle to the Curies, with Severus and MiMi chiming in for punctuation - simply delightful stuff!
The best part of course, apart from the kitty, being that Severus will not rest until Hermione tries to undo his death.
Squee!
LOVED the disappearing tea mug, and her thought that her purported individuality might not have been too pronounced when they kissed.
The ant "forcing" the bud into bloom was whimsical, indeed, as was Hermione's determined adoption of it.
~grins~
So happy to see the return of this complex and fascinating piece. I've been missing your versions of Severus and Hermione, as well as your creations of Demetrious and Mimi.
Must be disconcerting having those memories suddenly flooding in, and interesting that it still occurs when he is supposedly dead. :)
Thank you for this chapter! It's a bit short, but I've been waiting for a while and I'm happy you didn't drop it. Please don't take much time to update!
Ah, soooo long... But well worth the wait.
I know I keep repeating myself, but this is one of the most amazing and imaginative tales that I have read in the realm of Fan Fiction. I love that she can go back, but not have to worry about changing the time line. I love that people can't hear what they are not supposed to, but she can change their opinions just the same.
And I love that she is somehow managing to change Snape in the past, hopefully for the better, so he can survive and live to tell her what a special person she is to him.
I hope that whatever has kept you from this story is no longer in the way. I hope that nothing bad has complicated your life. I know first hand how life can get in the way of writing. But I do love this story and will anxiously await the next chapter, no matter how long it take for you to post it. :)
Yay, an update! I understand real life, but this is truly a fascinating story. Update again soon. I loved his little discussion with Demetrios.
Marvelous! I must say, teaching full time and also being a student? I don't know whether to be impressed by your chutspa or your insanity! Either way, I can hardly blame you for being slow on the update, much as I may begrudge you every minute, hour, or day that the waiting drags on. Good parts? Watching the memories return. In this alternate history that Hermione is creating, will Snape fall in love with her? It seems like that's what Demetrios is saying- that he falls for her, and somehow this will result in him not dying (or un-dying) in their present world and... Ta-dah! We get our big happy ending? Well, maybe. Far be it from me to dictate your plot. But I look forward to seeing how you unfold this origami cactus of a story line!
Now, how does he get Hermione back?
"Spare me your sparkling"--ooh, could that have been a Twilight dig? If so, I heartily approve! Another fabulous chapter, keeping me on the edge of my seat...how do you manage to simultaneously tell us more and yet still keep us in the dark wondering what's going to happen? It's a gift! Demetrious' assessment of Dumbledore was sharp and to the point, and his admittance of having been to Hogwarts before opens up even more questions--did he use Athena's owl to "vet" Hermione before offering her the job by looking in on her at key points in her emotional/psychological development, especially after finding out that he would in the future be working with her? How much does Demetrious know, anyway? As usual, can't wait until the next one!
LOLcats! Brilliant!
I just want you to know that I love this story and it just keeps getting better and better. I'm glad you were able to update after such a long time. I really missed it!
I love this story. It is the first story in a long time that I have really had any interest in reading. It is compelling, clever, creative, well written, emotional and a little bit sad without being maudlin. I have just finished all the chapters and am a bit disappointed that there is not more, which again, has not happened for me in potter fan fiction in a very long time. A wonderful tale. I await more.
Great story, but please don't leave us hanging!
Where are you? Poor Severus needs to know what's going on and so do I.
EEEEEEEK!! I check for an update every day and the wait is KILLING me. Please update soon.
I wonder if it would be possible for Hermione to write out what she has to say instead of verbally saying it. Would it "take" or not?
