I live in Virginia with my husband and 2 children. I make pottery, but, thanks to Harry Potter, I have rediscovered a passion for writing.
Reviews for The Potion Master's Assistant
Excellent! And intense. You did a really good job with Voldy. Despite his inhuman-ness, you made him very believable, and that's not an easy thing to do. How can SS recover from blood loss? Does that mean that Winky will be a bad house elf and bring Sienna back?I enjoyed this, as always.
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
So glad to see that you are sticking with me to the bitter end,
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
. Thanks so much for your vote of confidence.I can't take all the credit for my Voldy rendition. Much of the dialog came directly from book 7. But I appreciate your words of approval just the same.Winky is most definitely Severus' house-elf, but that means that she cares about him also... I can't say more without giving it away. :)
So will he let her take part in the battle? Or will he convince her that her healing abilities will be needed too much for her to risk fighting?
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
Only time and the next chapter will tell. Sorry, but if I say anything I will give it away.
Now that was an interesting image you conjured here... thank you!

One of my long-time fantasies...Glad you enjoyed it.
Sounds like a lovely cove. :)

Especially with Severus in such a lovely mood! ; )
Lily coming back as a child. That would be interesting! :)
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
She's a bigger brat than Harry! And a troublemaker, too. LOL.
What an interesting turn of events... Thank you for this chapter!

You're welcome!Happy New Year.
How embarrassing, liking Harry! LOL :)
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
I imagine that the situation embarrasses both of them!
Excellent! I hadn't thought of reincarnation, which was rather stupid of me given the spirituality of Sienna and your story. Loved it! What a wonderful explanation for Sienna's and DD's connection, and a great interpretation of the value of Ariana's death. While Ariana's death was the final breaking point between DD and Grindelwald, I hadn't really thought of DD fully following Grindelwald's path, even if Grindelwald hadn't killed her. Somehow, I always thought that DD was capable of turning himself around all on his own (granted, it would have taken him longer if Ariana hadn't been killed). Still, your point definitely has a lot of merit. You're right in that it leaves the fascinating questions of what would DD have done, and turned into, if Ariana hadn't died.
As for the soul-mate issue, can a person have more than one? If Lily's death saved SS's soul, and Ariana's saved DD's, and DD's death saved Draco's, whose soul did Sienna's death save? Assuming that a person can have more than one soul-mate and, indeed, Sienna's death saved SS's soul, again, it poses the same questions: What would SS have done, or turned into, if Sienna hadn't died?
Were soul mates, Albus, and, more often than not, we dont actually end up married to each other. But, lifetime after lifetime, our main mission is to help each other advance spiritually." Wow! I never really thought about the purpose of soul-mates (again, stupid me), or that soul love and romantic love are discrete from each other. All of the stories I've read that involve soul-mates have been that if you have soul love with a person, that automatically includes romantic love. I definitely prefer your take on it, but I wonder if SS will acknowledge the difference. While he can probably accept that a person can have multiple soul-mates, can SS accept that it's possible for him to romantically love a non-soul-mate (Sienna) more than a soul-mate (Lily)? Wonder what Babaji's take is on all this.
This story is definitely great food for thought, which is just one of the things that makes it so good. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Update soon, and have a wonderful new year.

Hi
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
. As you may have guessed, I have read a lot of books concerning eastern philosophy. Both Buddhist and Hindu religions revolve around the notion of reincarnation. What many Christians don't know is that Jesus alluded to it in the Bible as well when he first met John the Baptist. He knew John from their previous life together. The twist of soul mates being responsible for each other's spiritual growth is simply my own theory based on the books I've read. I think the romantic version is more popular because most people can't relate to the other aspects like I do. But to me, spiritual growth is much more important than romantic love, so it makes more sense. Thanks so much for your in-depth comments. I enjoy it when a reader digs beneath the surface and comes up with a deeper meaning to this story. That was my goal in the first place. And if you ever get a chance to read Dr. Michael Newton's two books "Journey of Souls" and "Destiney of Souls", you will find that his case studies show that people do have more than one soul mate. They usually come from a small cluster of soul mates with one that they are closer to than the others. He is a hypnothearapist who regresses people back through their previous lives to find out what happens between incarnations. Fascinating stuff if you have the time.

I've always been stumped as to why some holidays that honor people's lives are celebrated on those people's death days rather than on their birth days. After reading my earlier comments, I realize that I've fallen into the same trap. After thinking more on this latest chapter, it occurred to me that Sienna's death might actually have been to save Harry's soul, while her life and birth are to help develop (rather than save) SS's soul. Hum. I'll have to think more on that.
Thanks for the book references. I've got a few waiting on my to-read shelf, but I'll definitely add them to the list.
It fits, perfectly.
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
Thanks so much. :)
Smashing!! The reincarnation angle is very inventive. I love the way you put the thoughts into Harry's dreams. intricate and brilliant!
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
The dream thing seemed logical to me. He would have been too pig headed to listen to her because of his hatret for Snape if she had come to him directly. But as a dream, he had no choice but to go along with it all the way to the end before making any judgements.
Yay! All power to the House Elf!

The part about Snape's summer is great, although I suspect the timeline may be compressed. Others knowing about Snapes' loyalty fits with my image of Dumbledore "not putting all his eggs in one basket", so I'm glad that you included Aberforth. His brother probably trusted him as much as anyone. The same with Sienna. Although her role may be much bigger.
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
You will find as the story progresses, that Severus doesn't tell Aberforth much, and vice-versa. But they trust each other, and that is the important thing. DD knew that he needed to leave behind a few "tools" for both Harry and Severus to find, and Aberforth is one of them. JKR made him very useful to Harry, so it seemed logical to me that he would turn out to be useful to Severus as well. Thanks so much for your comments,

The good-bye scene between DD and Sienna was absolutely lovely and heartbreaking. Seeing DD display his affections like that, so openly and genuinely, was extremely touching.Severus is a dear, but sometimes I want to drop-kick him. You pegged him with his insecurities and self-hatred, along with his King Kong-sized ego. As amazingly capable and talented as he is, he over-estimates his power and influence when he assumes responsiblility for all the harm that befalls others. Severus, the all-powerful god of the magical world. For someone who's so sharp in so many ways, he's equally clueless in others. Definitely a case of putting too many eggs in one basket. Still, we love him.Incredible chapter!
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
Severus is far from perfect, just as you said. You see him as I do. And IMO DD is not quite as bad as many make him out to be. I have always loved Dumbledore, in spite of his many faults. But I always try to see the good in people. Thanks,

Wonderful! Once again, you covered scenes that other writers only mention in passing. These scenes are not only interesting, they provide good pace and authenticity to your story. As always, I greatly enjoyed this chapter and can't wait to see what Sienna's new role will be. Does she go back to Hogwarts as an apprentice or adjunct, or will she apprentice at St. Mungo's? You certainly baited the hook.
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
You are on the right track with Sienna's future, but if I say any more I will be giving away a major plot line. Thanks so much for patiently waiting and sticking with me. I had a lot of trouble getting this chapter ready.

Hum. It looks like she's got his number. So, when will Severus crumble and go crawling back?
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
Severus never crumbles or crawls. Things get even more complicated before they calm down. But you're right, she does have his number. Don't worry. Thanks for reading. I love the comments.
Response from color (Reviewer)
LOL. You're right. Severus is definitely not a crumbly crawler. IMO, what makes him so sexy is his intelligence, power, skill, and wit, combined with spectacular intensity/passion. It's not that he's a bad boy, because he really isn't, at least not since he left the Death Eaters. It's that if he ever did let go, the detonation would be deafening. For such a tightly wound/self-controlling person, he really is a bit of a hot-head in some ways. Guess it goes hand in hand with the passion.

Here's an example in chapter 2 that demonstrates what I was talking about in my comments in chapter 3.Severus accuses Sienna of letting Potter steal ingredients from SS's storeroom. Her response: "You’re wrong about me. I just hope that when you realize it, you won’t let your pride stand in the way of asking me back.” After that, she leaves and no longer approaches him or looks at him in class. In short, she throws the ball into his court and waits patiently. She doesn't force the issue. After several months, Severus realizes he was mistaken, and *he* initiates amends. Here's that scene. At the end of the following class, Severus walked up to Sienna and stood silently, but she didn’t look up. "I require your assistance for a while after class today, if you don’t mind," he said, trying to sound authoritative."Why don’t you ask one of your trustworthy Slytherins?" she replied sarcastically, still not bothering to look him in the eye."Because it requires your… unique talents," he admitted softly, trying not to sound too anxious, just in case she refused to cooperate. Finally, her eyes met his. They were sparkling again, like moonlight on water. She seemed to know that this was as close to an apology as he would ever give her. "Are you sure?" she asked, her expression full of hope.“Yes,” he said softly, nodding. They stood staring at each other. He wondered what she was thinking, if she would hold a grudge or treat him differently now, but he needn’t have worried. When the last student walked out the door, Sienna flung her arms around Severus’ chest. This time he was relieved instead of offended, and he lightly patted her back.***Severus willingly grows as a person when he receives gentle support and treatment from others. He's a skiddish person who requires soft handling. Dumbledore knows this, and it just so happens that Dumbledore is naturally that way when given the choice. Sienna is the same way. Both DD and Sienna are powerful individuals with strong senses of self (no push-overs, they'll make their own decisions). They *could* force others to their will if they wanted to, but they always choose not to do that unless it's absolutely necessary. Again, they're gentle with people, AND they truly forgive with graciousness.Compare Sienna and DD with Hermione. She decides what's best for someone or what someone should do, strongly voices her opinions, expects them to comply with her wishes immediately, and gets pissed as Hell when they don't. Consider the kind of jockey she would make. Poor horse! Severus can't stand her and refuses to comply with her demands, even when she's right!

Sienna and Dumbledore are linked in more ways than you can imagine. You'll find out much more as the story progresses.I am really enjoying your insight into Sienna and Severus. I knew a man once who (on the surface) seemed quite stubborn and even mean. But I always treated him with kindness, even when he was mean to me, and I eventually won him over. So Sienna's way of handling Severus came directly from my own experience. I have found over the years that diplomacy goes a long way. Also, people are much more willing to do something if they "think" it's their own idea. Thanks again for your insightful reviews.

Exactly! But you said it in much fewer words than I did.Hum. Now you've got me curious about those additional connections between Sienna and DD. When's your next update?

I like that you have made Dumbledore a good guy for a change. So many times he is portrayed as a manipulative old sod!
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
I know that Dumbledore did his share of manipulating, and he put both Harry and Severus in horrible spots, knowing that he would not be around to suffer their wrath or witness their suffering. But I also know that he did it for the "greater good." It reminds me of the movie "Casablanca," where Rick finally realized at the end that the lives of 3 little people don't mean a hill of beans in this world, when faced with the bigger picture of WWII. Dumbledore made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause, so it's not like he asked anything of anyone that he was not willing to do himself. Thanks for sticking with me,

Hum. I can't help but wonder what Sienna's power is. She can obviously sense magic and influence it, such as sensing Severus's Dark Mark and calming it. She can also sense auras/life force, so explaining why she recognized Cedric's death before anyone else. She can even influence emotions, yet for all this, you've made no mention of her as being a "seer". No matter how you explain it later on, you've obviously made her an unusually powerful witch with a rare talent, and it's no wonder that Dumbledore is so intrigued by her. I can't wait to find out!
Response from ClayPotter (Author of The Potion Master's Assistant)
You'll find out more about her gift in her 7th year. It is deep, but not that complicated. Most of her magical power comes from the fact that she learned to meditate at an early age, so she can really concentrate and focus her energies. Thanks so much for reading, and especially for taking the time to review.

You're welcome. In the past, I've been very lax about giving feedback, but this story shows different situations and approaches than the usual, and it's gotten me to think. That and I've really enjoyed just flat-out reading it.It's refreshing to see Severus reach his potential willingly rather than by stumbling into it by accident or because he's forced.Your story shows a woman who can inspire and encourage Severus to reach his potential in a positive way. It's believable. So many stories depict women whose actions/personalities/situations force him, and most often in very negative ways. Given Severus's nature, does he respond well to people who force his hand, or to people who show him kindness and caring? Canon gives the answer to that in his relationship with Dumbledore.Canon portrays his relationship with Dumbledore as a mix. Yes, Dumbledore forces his hand when DD finds it critical to do for the war, but DD also gives SS genuine concern, caring and friendship. SS responds to that. So there's the question: How would SS respond to a female equivalent of DD? What would that relationship entail? You're answering those questions, and that's what makes this story unique and worth comment. Good job!

One of the things I really like about this story is how you portray Sienna. She's not a doormat in the slightest, but she also doesn't impose herself upon others either. She has true grace. I can't help but compare her to Hermione Granger. I admit to finding HG quite annoying, controlling, self-righteous, intollerant, insecure, and absolutely clueless as to others' personal boundaries and just how overbearing she is. Whew! With that said, it's refreshing to see a mature, though young, woman interact with Severus and provide him with the stability and calmness that he desperately needs, along with genuine acceptance, which he needs in equal measure. As for Severus, you hit the nail on the head. He will sooner assume the worst in others, and let his emotions/insecurities cloud his judgment. Combine that with an overabundance of pride... well, it's nice that you have Lily in the story to help him admit his mistakes and keep his humanity. In so many ways, he's the little boy who responds beautifully to kindness, once he realizes that he can trust that kindness.Great job!

Snape using Legilimency on Harry in Umbridge's office makes a lot of sense.

It was obvious from Harry's eye piercing stare that that was his hope. Snape is many things, but stupid is not one of them. :)Glad to see I didn't lose you because this took so long to post. I was out of town for a week, then there was a glitch with the management that was ultimately my fault. Hopefully the next chapter will happen more quickly.

This story is one of my absolute favorite WIPs. I am truly enjoying your characters, the groundedness of Sienna, and how she brings out Severus's softer side. I also appreciate how you delve into the development of their relationship without using angst or standard conventions. A wonderful read. I can't wait for the next chapter!
