Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Hello Lariope,Reading your story is like discovering large, important pieces of a three dimensional puzzle. The puzzle is the entire DH story; JKR gave us the keystones and you give us other critical pieces. Thinking this way about it there are other pieces, perhaps small, perhaps large, left undiscoered (e.g. Minerva's story, Remus' story). They might not be as central to moving events along but they are part of the puzzle. I wonder if someone will tell them? This line was priceless: “Hello, Albus,” he said mildly as he crossed the room."I love the way you used Luna. She's just right ... so accepting of the offbeat that she doesn't baulk at Snape's role at all and intelligent and intuitive enough to see it in the first place. Snapes' grief over Dobby and Hermione is very well done. Seems like he might be on his way to a Life After (guess I can't say the Afterlife!) because of his love for Hermione. And .... "Dumbledore had left her there. He thought he saw, now, why the meddling old bastard had done it, for he had thought it impossible to feel more strongly about this girl than he had only an hour ago, and yet, as he tried to bring her relief from the pain, he felt his heart would burst from loving her. Whatever Dumbledore had said, he must have known what he was doing. He tried to feel angry, to feel manipulated and tricked, but he could not bring himself to feel anything but grateful in that moment. "That's very intriguing. I rememver speculating at some point that DD was tryingt o get them attached to each other, though I can't remeber why I thought he would hae odne so. Benignly, it gives Seerus a reason to live, but hard to imagine this DD that altruistic.Finally., poor Hermione saying she's like DD in sending Dobby to his death. Not the same at all -- Dobby had a choice, as there was no emoional blackmail He chose to do what he did in responmse to her (Snape's) requrest. Look forward to the next installment. "Someone is on our side" ... hopefully this paves the way for Ron, Harry et al. to acccept Severus' role. Very clever on your part, as one of the things that seems to make it hard in fanon for Harry to accept that Severus was on their side is the lack of this kind of unexplained help. How can he believe Severus did things if there wasn't anything that he could have done -- if everything appears to have been solely due to the Trio's efforts and Severus' eforts invisible?RedRooFedRoo

Sorry about all the typos, LOL! Was up late working and practically falling asleep as I wrote the above -- couldn't wait to leave a review, but I should have! Believe it or not, I proofread it, or at least I thought I did. FedRoo is who I am after dinner.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear RedRoo,Don't worry about the typos! I appreciate that you read and reviewed while you were that tired!I'm glad you liked Luna--she's one of my favorite canon characters. Unflappable, that's Luna. I adore her. And I agree with you that Snape is allowing more emotion through, even if he's unwilling to admit what that means for/to him. As I've said in reviews before, I have always believe that Chapter 6 (in which she heals Snape) is the pivotal chapter, that she could not have fallen in love with him when she did if not for that. And maybe what I think (because this has always been complicated in my mind) is that Dumbledore meant them to be good partners, to know early one the meaning of "having each other's lives in their hands," not anticipating that there would ever be anything deeper. I suspect he found Snape unlovable. I hadn't thought about the role of the helper in quite that way--that Harry finds it hard to accept Snape's help because he doesn't see that he's been helped at all... (except, of course, by Hermione). Interesting... wheels turning... ;) Thank you.And thank you so much for your review, as always.
Response from RedRoo45 (Reviewer)
The idea that DD found Snape unlovable rings very true. In canon, Harry is quite modest and many fics also portray him that way. So the not seeing the help isn't an ego thing, just that having an "ah ha" moment would help them accept Snape's role once they found out about it.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
And now you must excuse all the hideous typos I now see in my own response! No, I knew what you meant--I don't see Harry as ego driven, but if we accept the idea that Dumbledore set this all up as a sort of obstacle course for him that he successfully navigated, than it would be hard for him to see where other forces may have influenced what happened.
I'm so glad everything turned out right in the end, except for Dobby. Of course we already knew that, but this new perspective makes me forget that I've read the book.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, I'm so pleased to hear that! Thank you. And I am sorry about Dobby. I was terribly sad to do it again.
Oh my. Beautifully done, all the way around. The contrast between Dumbledore, who apparently felt no guit about his manipulations, and Hermione, who did when there was no need, is very nice. Dobby was indeed a free elf. And Snape's trying and failing to resent Dumbledore's manipulations early on, when he left Hermione to heal him, is also a very nice touch.Someone's on our side-- that's a departure from the original, isn't it? (Sorry, can't bear to bring myself to reread DH, especially with something this good to take its place.) Harry's realization that there's someone working behind the scenes to help bodes well for the future. Well done, as always. Look forward to more.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad that you liked it. And I'm happy that you saw a contrast between Dumbledore's actions and Hermione's, even if she can't right now. Well, in DH, I suppose Harry was aware that someone was helping him--but he sort of half-heartedly thought it was Dumbledore. I do hope my Harry is a little wiser than that... so we'll just have to see. :)Thank you so much for reviewing!
Thanks for another great chapter! This story is amazing!
I really liked your descriptions of Luna. In general her poised flakiness is so much fun, but here you really illustrated the strength behind it. And I absolutely loved her line: “I guess that’s what love looks like when you’re afraid.”
JadeResponse from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you very much, Jade. I'm very glad that you liked Luna here--I agree, part of what makes Luna fun is that dreamy attitude, but I'm always pleased to remember that she's a Ravenclaw, and one the bravest and truest members of the DA. Thank you for reviewing!
Excellent chapter...I like the way you intertwine the stories together. I mean it seems like this really could have happened. Great job and I look forward to more updates.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I couldn't be more delighted to hear that! Thank you so, so much. Thank you, and I hope you continue to enjoy it!
I am so impressed by how you're weaving your story so perfectly into what the book told! I'm really enjoying each and every update. Thanks!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you are enjoying Second Life and that it's still working with canon for you. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Dobby's death always made me feel sad, but I did enjoy this chapter because of all the detail that went in to it.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dobby's death is devastating; I agree. I didn't want to do it. But I'm glad you liked the chapter anyway. Thanks for reviewing!
I'm so glad you found a way for Snape to go to her, and I love the way you used Luna!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. Luna is the best; she's one of my very favorite canon characters.
You are spoiling us with all the updates!! Thank you! I love this story and cant wait to read more! I like how you stick so closely to the original story lines, but make it so much better!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it! Publishing has caught up to my stored up chapters finally, but I'm going to try to keep to one update a week. Not so long to go now... Thank you so much for reviewing! I really appreciate it.
I know this is AU, but I really am enjoying your take on all this. How fun to think that Snape was there helping. The way your wrote it, it seems quite possible.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
It's a weird kind of AU, isn't it? I mean, the whole premise is AU, and I rely on my AU tag for the changes that I'll make from here on out, but there's the canon element all the same. I'm glad that it's still working for you--and more than glad that it seems plausible. Thank you so much!!
I like the changes you made with Luna. 'Nest of Acromantulas'--good simile :-) And I really like what's going through Snape's head in the beginning. He's fascinating when he's slipping. Good work as always.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Somehow I've gotten quite attached to FreakingOut!Snape, haven't I? I'm really glad to hear that you liked the revised Luna. Thank you, my dear.
This was such a fantastic chapter. I loved his anger over the improper healing attempts on his wife. I loved that he toed off his shoes and hopped into bed, to soothe and comfort her while she slept.I loved that he walked through his office...said hello to Dumbledore and then was off to Shell Cottage! Take that Dumbledore! *L*I loved that Luna was so unfased by it all. Its so in character for Luna! It was a great chapter, and I can't wait for it all to be finished - so I can read it from start to finish!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
! I'm so happy to hear that you liked it. You've named most of my favorite parts of writing it. :) I'll tell you, there are days when I can't wait for it all to be finished too, and then I can hardly imagine my life without it anymore. I hope you continue to enjoy it.Thanks for reviewing!
Loved it. *Drying the tears* Does anyone have a tishu?Dobby! Poor, brave little house-elf- I loved the way he brings everyone together- how evet\ryone is weeping for him (the part when Snape was talking to his grave was so touching!).What can I say? I love your Luna, which is exactly how I see her (bravo!), and the way Hermione is calling for Snape while she is delirious, and Snape himself is amazing, his devotion... Wow. And the way you changed the perspectives! Yup, you got me following this story aroung like a good little puppy...
Response from Lupera (Reviewer)
Sorry about the spelling and mistakes- I'm not so good with writind during car-rides (edmittedly long ones)...
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm flattered that you reviewed while in the car--don't worry about typos!!I'm so glad you liked it,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. Thank you so much!
That is anather fabulous chapter , and I love it . I was so woried for Hermione , but the healing that Severus is perform is so increadible and thender and so similar to Hermiones healing of Severus . In here I see Sevsrus final acceptans his love and dedication for Hermione. I must confes that I did not read DH but I know the basic . I prefer for Severus to survive and finaly find hapynes .I also love relationship betwen Hermione and Severus because I find boath caracter great , quite similar in his wisdom , intelect and streinght. I am sory that Doby die , but I also am hapy that Hary finaly realize that somebody important is helping him. Best regard from Lora
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Wow--I'm always amazed when someone says they haven't read DH. I hope I do it justice! Obviously, I'm a huge Snape/Hermione fan myself, and I'm glad you're enjoying my take on their relationship. We have many of the same preferences, my dear! Thank you for reviewing! xoxo
Oh, Lariope. What to say? The way the story shifts POVs from Hermione's confusion and agony to Snape's sudden realization that Dobby isn't coming back -- so intense. And your Luna is pitch-perfect: "I guess that's what love looks like when you're afraid." Then there's the way the chapter wraps up -- what an amazing sense it gives that even as one Master Plan is unraveling, another pattern is rising up to take its place. This continues to be such a satisfying re-imagining of DH. Thank you for delivering so much so consistently.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
, thank you so much. I'm very taken with your reading of the story: that as one plan unravels, another rises to the surface. That's a truly lovely way to think about it. It will be at the top of my mind as I write the next few chapters. Thank you.
*cried again for Dobby*The devotion Severus showed as he laboured to Heal Hermione just tore my heart! It will be so horrible if they can't be together when this is all over.Don't tell me. I'll just rust in the title of the fic. *nods*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, I won't tell. I've been absolutely dreadful about spoiling the story in reviews. I'm sorry for the tears, but glad you could be with them emotionally. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Someone call for a brass band, Harry is finally getting a clue!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
This made me cackle out loud. :) Thank you for making my day!
." Who were these idiots caring for her?" Did you mean "how" maybe???:)I like your version very much, it is very close to the original but still you manage to make it a new story!Keep it up.I really like your Luna!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it, Luna in particular. I love Luna. Thank you for reviewing!
Once again, another fabulous chapter! And it's so plausible that Snape could have been there, now that you write it. I think JKR just forgot to tell us about that. You make this whole story so plausible with canon, only so much better than canon. Thank you, thank you for writing it!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
My dear, thank you for reading it! And I'm glad you find it plausible--very glad. *does happy dance*And she was always "forgetting" to tell us things, wasn't she? It seems crazy that she could have left their marriage out... but I guess she had a lot on her mind. lol!Thank you for reviewing!
I like how you have woven Severus into the melee at Malfoy Manor. It would have been *agony* for him to watch her be tortured like that.Ironically, you have stopped at the point where I began to cry in DH; I cried pretty much from here to the end.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you--and I agree that Severus would have been... well, I can't even think of a word strong enough for how he would have felt.Yes, excepting Gringotts, I think I pretty much cried from there on out as well.Oh, dear. Perhaps there are tears to follow here...Thank you for reviewing!
No, not too late! Ahhhh... update, please!!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Fear not--I shall update tomorrow or the next day! Not too much longer to wait! Thank you for reviewing!
i still can't believe the MANY ways that you find to twist Snape's influence into the story! :) I've said it before, and i'll keep saying it, because I don't know what else to say ... you are a genius!!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
*squishes you* Thank you so much! I'm so glad that you are still liking the story!
I just returned from a few days vacation and had this amazing chapter just waiting for me to read. Thanks for another great chapter. More soon please!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. More to come quite soon!
Evil, evil woman!! That was a brillant take on what happened at Malfoy Manner. Draco being confounded so that he did not know who they are...I wonder how Snape will cope not really knowing what happened after he left. I think it may tear him up inside until he knows Hermione is safe
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Why am I so pleased to be called evil? ;)I'm so glad you liked it--particularly the Draco bit. I'm a little rabid when it comes to the Malfoys. And I agree with you that Snape would not only have a very hard time leaving, but that he would be nearly beside himself waiting to hear what happened.Thank you for reviewing!
Whoa! Dramatic or what? I actually stopped breathing a couple of times! Poor Sev, his soul must look like the Somme thanks to the constant internal battles. I'm defiantely going to have a pack of hankies ready for the next chapter!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, no! No asphyxiation please!! I can't be held responsible! :)Thanks--and yes, bring the hankies. ;)
