Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Ooooooh my goodness girl, you've got me worked up with this one. What tenderness as Hermione watches her boys in their sleep. And thinking about them bursting into the loo to save her from the troll, how much the dynamic of their whole relationship is mirrored by those long ago events that cemented their friendship. And oh yes, how like Harry to jump into the nacient plan without thinking it through AT ALL, leaving Snape just frantic in his rooms wondering what in the world happened there. Snape once again displays strength of character I can't begin to imagine, watching his wife at Bella's mercy. Really great chapter, such intensity and feeling. Though agh what a cliffie!! My heart cries for Dobby, these next scenes were very sad in DH, the masochist in me can't wait to see your take on them.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Well, masochist or not, those scenes are coming, so look out. :)Thank you so much for such a lovely review. I'm glad that you were able to connect to the different emotional spaces of the chapter. *hugs you*
That was an amazing account of the trio's entrance to Malfoy Manor. I like that they broke the taboo premeditatively, and I liked that Snape was there to protect Hermione and Harry. The details of Hermione's struggle with Bellatrix and Harry and Ron's struggle with Draco and the Black sisters were terrifying and heart-wrenching. All in all, another astoundingly great chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Emmeline! I'm glad you liked it.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Ok, now that I got that out of my system... must gather my wits... as if I had any to begin with... bloody brilliant as always. Just finished watching V for Voldemo uh... Vendetta with my hubby and I totally saw this last scene in my mind in slow motion with the 1812 Overture playing in the background... Made it quite interesting actually. Seriously though, you go above and beyond the call of duty/good writing/pleasing your readers with this chappie, Love. Thank you thank you thank you. Oh, before I forget... I LOVED when she said about Ron, "I made him beautiful." Loved that. And in a way it sounded to me like when you described how he looked, he looked like Rupert! Broader nose, etc. Anyways, maybe it's just me but it still made me smile. (Goes off to grumble about having to wait for another chapter... Oh, but won't it be worth it!?! It always is.)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm very excited by your response and feeling all invigorated now! And I hadn't considered that he might look more like Rupert there... that's a wonderful thought. Thank you for reviewing! I'm so glad you liked it.
Hello Lariope,Another great chapter! I admire very much the way you weave "your" action around the action in DH. If not and Excel spreadsheet, maybe you do it with mirrors?I'm too sleepy to write much, but wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this chapter (and the re-read of Chapter 33 before I read 34).RedRoo
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, RedRoo! I'm glad you liked it. How would it work with mirrors? I admit, I don't really know how it would work in Excel, either. I'm not that organized. I don't think my notes and outlines make much sense to anyone but me. :)
Response from RedRoo45 (Reviewer)
Well, I don't know how it would work with mirrors or in Excel, either :), I'm just being silly, as I'm sure you know. And as long as you understand your notes, that's all that matters!
Another excellent chapter. A nice twist to one of the few scenes I really liked in DH. Also, I like Harry, but I'm glad that you had him under Snape's shield. Your story makes it more believable that three teenagers could do so well for themselves.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you--I'm glad you liked Snape's shield. I was attached to that for several reasons, one of which is definitely that I'm not sure they could have survived the Death Eater's headquarters without help.Thank you so much for reviewing! xoxo
Wonderful re-imagining of that particular chapter, completely chilling, especially Snape's helpless anguish at having to watch her suffer.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you!
I liked this better than DH - wow this was emotion packed and had me on the edge of my seat - good job and good chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much! That is a lovely compliment.
Wow, that was intense. Hanging on the edge of my seat for the update.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! More soon...
Darn now I need to check that scene out again as well.Very good story
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you!
Love this fic!!! I know I've said it before, but the way you've been able to mix canon with your story line is amazing. Liked Snape being there to try to help the trio, although it's so sad that he had to watch his wife be tortured and was unable to do anything without giving himself away. The fact that Hermione and Severus planned Dobby's role in their escape is going to add to the guilt that they both feel when (if) he dies like he did in DH, and probably be especially bad for Snape since Dobby actually believed in him before Minerva did and (by bringing Hermione to him last chapter) had pretty much chosen him over Dumbledore. He's going to feel even more alone than he did before... Looking forward to the next!!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I love all your emoticons! Thank you so much for such a lovely review. I don't want to say to much about the next chapter, so I will just say thank you and that there will be more soon!xoxo
Oh My Goodness! What an incredible chapter!!!I absolutely LOVED it...such a thrilling read!!!I know I say this all the time, but I find your portrayal of Hermione to be dead on (and inspiring). She was so brave "taking care of her boys "in this installment.Nice to see Snape back in action! I loved this..." Going now? Going NOW? What in the hell could she have been thinking of? This was not the time; the plan was little more than an idea--she was supposed to contact him with a date, not Going Fucking Now. "I was also very touched by his courage when he ordered Dobby to "Get Potter out", if things were not salvageable. How hard it must've been for him not to tell Dobby to save Hermione too.The richness, and depth, of your characters is amazing! They truly are admirable! (and so are you!)A thousand Bravos!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. I'm so flattered and pleased by your review!I'm so glad that Hermione and Snape still feel admirable to you, that they are still fully realized for you. Thank you so much for reviewing! I really appreciate it. xoxox
Oh my, what a blood-freezing chapter!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, no! Not frozen blood! I'm glad you liked it. THanks for reviewing!
Oh dear! I enjoyed seeing it from Snape's point of view, and as much as I would have liked for Snape to pull a stunt, grab Hermione, and be gone...it probably was a better choice to resist. Can't wait for the next!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Well, I'm glad you could sympathize with his position--torn between wanting to help her immediately, vs. keeping his cover and helping her in the long run. Thank you for reviewing! More soon!
Argh! Evil cliffy! I love this chapter though. I enjoy the whole "Hermione in peril" thing, twisted as I am :-) Character torture is fun, LOL. Please write more soon!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
It is an evil cliffie. I apologize for it. :)I think its important to the story (beyond the fact that it happened in DH) for Hermione to experience this; not just to have a taste of what Snape has suffered, although that's part of it, but just to be reminded, at this juncture in which she's kind of done her own Dumbledore-style manipulation, that this is not a game, that it's a war. So I can twistedly understand your enjoyment of it. :)Thanks for reviewing! More soon!
Okay so I was this close to sending you a desperate message, in the manner of an addict pleading with their drug dealer, pleading for more Second Life. Luckily your chapter showed up first! But I can't promise that much restraint next time. ;-) God I jones for this story more than anything else I've ever read. And what a chapter you gave me! Chock full of goodness. Starting with Hermione tenderly appraising "her boys", thinking of Harry's cross to bear, cleansing his face from dried tears. Who thinks of their own death at seventeen, indeed? Beautifully, achingly, poignant.I have been quite curious about this section and how it would play out. I love, and this may sound quite strange/sadistic, but I love that you didn't give Hermione an "easy" way out, i.e. having Severus put a protection shield around her and having her just "pretend" to be tortured. For some reason, I felt like that would be cheating some of the seriousness out of the original. Not that yours has to adhere to every circumstance of DH (quite the opposite!) but that was one thing I was hoping would be the same. It gives her struggle and bravery so much heft and importance, and the fact that Severus had to helplessly witness it gave the whole scene a disturbing yet hauntingly lovely symmetry. I'm thinking, of course, of when Dumbledore ordered Hermione to care for Sev after the cursed whip punishment. She couldn't do anything to stop the pain, and it tore her up to see him hurting so much. And now he knows that he would die before letting her experience that kind of pain again. I've gone on too long. Please be kind to your faithful addicts. How long must we endure until our next hit, I mean chapter? (I say in partial jest, of course, for I totally respect and understand that you have another life other than writing and that these things take time. Take my impatience as a compliment, kind of like if someone burps after they eat something you cooked. It's my literary burp.)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
My dearest faithful addict,I know completely what you mean about Hermione and am very excited to hear you compare it to Chapter 6--very excited. I'm hoping that the next chapter will come on schedule (Wednesday) though I will not make promises. I WILL try to promise that I'll never make you wait longer than a week (barring calamity/family emergency/dismemberment). ;)Thank you so much for reviewing! I loved your literary burp! LOL
Great, great chapter. I really like how much they are in control in your story, not just pawns in a game that is way to big for them.I'm already looking forward to the next update!gab
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! It's very important to me that they follow some sort of logical progression through the story--I think one of the things I was most frustrated with in DH was how random things sometimes seemed--and then we were supposed to see it as the great plan of Dumbledore--though how he could have planned for all that was beyond me. :)I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks for reviewing!
OH. MY. HEAVENS. A cliffhanger like that!!! I have to applaud you for playing out this scene so well, and I have to admit that I have been looking forward to this part since you began writing Hermione's point of view of Deathly Hallows.Once again, this was an amazing chapter, and I cannot wait for more!!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm so glad that you were looking forward to it, and that it lived up to your expectations! Thank you so much!
If all is lost, it said, go to the last house on Spinner’s End, Manchester. He had not left her homeless after all. It took all she had to burn it. Oh, man ... that just about undid me. More than anything he could have said or done -- this proves just how much he cares.Wonderful, as always.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much! I'm so glad that part was affecting to you--I cried when I wrote it!!
Another amazing interweaving of what was there, showing what else must've been there all along, too!I adore the way you started this chapter by reminding us what Hermione still feels for her two best friends, something that gets a little lost in all the fracas (in DH as much as in anything else). This was terribly touching, and it's also nice to see that Harry is able to figure a few things out on his own.Nice touch to have them thrust precipitously into the action because, once again and true to form, Harry can't wait to put together a sensible plan. I adore your making this whole incident Hermione and Severus' idea (and their ability to roll with the punches, so to speak, as the plan gets "Potterfyed"). It's also wonderful to see their recognition of what it means that Harry has wrested domination of Draco's wand. And, just as she pulled him back from the edge of the abyss last chapter, now he gets to find ways to help her live through this (a lovely touch to have him witness Bella's attack). You continue to blow me away! I don't know how you are accomplishing this so quickly, and yet still have time to answer your voluminous reviews, but however it's happening, keep it up! This continues to be an utterly astonishing accomplishment.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much. So, so, so much. I'm really glad that this one worked for you. I'm glad that the Potter-fication of the plan made sense to you. When I read this chapter to my husband, he said, now, wait. Why did Harry just charge ahead? And I had to explain that that's just something Harry does, and that if he thought somehow that it was what Dumbledore had wanted, he wouldn't have wanted to stick around letting Ron talk them out of it. ;)I'm glad you're seeing a mirror between Snape's care of Hermione and Hermione's care of Snape. Hurrah!Thank you so much for your amazingly lovely review. xoxo
Nice cliffie.I love how Severus was dealt a bad hand and is making the best of it. I think he had to make quick decisions in canon that were never brought to light and were totally glossed over. It is nice that we finally got to see his fast thinking and his improvising in a less than ideal situation.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I like writing both Severus and Hermione in improvisational situations. I think they both have a logical nature that doesn't crumble under pressure.Thank you for reviewing!
Wow! I'm usually much more verbose, but all I can say right now is I wish Rowling had written it your way. Much more exiciting!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you!
you are a inspired writer, please continue to keep me fascinated. this is only the third review i have left in three years of reading ss/hg as i am lazy but i feel this story is outstanding and i had to express my appreciation for all the time you and other authors spend giving me so much pleasure. many thanks
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, my goodness! I am very flattered! Thank you so much for reviewing. I'm very glad that you are enjoying Second Life. Thanks for reading!
You've done such an excellent job of weaving canon into your story -- it just meshes so beautifully. You give us all plausible explanations for all the things that JKR did without telling us WHY!I'm continually amazed by this!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much!!
Poor Doby :( Don't really have much to add as far as comments for this one. lol The shortened version of DH with a little Snape thrown in (yay! something that was sorely missing from the real DH) - so I'll just say that, as usual, I find your version of the tale a much better read than the original.Happy writing! :)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. And yes, poor Dobby. He was a very loyal friend.
