Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Heartbreaking, soul shattering epiphany for Severus. How terrifying. Hermione appears so supportive even though she is angry and afraid herself. A powerful chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you. Yes, I was proud of Hermione in this chapter. It helped me to remember that she is becoming a wife, that she has learned that sometimes you swallow your fear to take care of the other guy, that there is a kind of ebb and flow to these things.Thank you so much for reviewing!
Love it, love it, love it. The last part is really good, and it makes sense for Snape to take some time to recover instead of bouncing right back into plotting. Hermione is wonderful in this as well. So much compassion and strength, but in a way that's still human. Great work you!

Hurrah! Thank you,

What an exceedingly well written chapter. You capture the manic urgency of the battle, the chaos and uncertainty of the Order, caught by surprise. And Snape, as usual you've captured a sense of him that I find to be most true, very real to his character. The memories he calls upon are great, fitting. Very well done.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you very much. Thank you in particular for your support of Snape here--I was quite worried about how to give him the... intent... to wield an Unforgivable against Dumbledore, and I'm glad that what I chose made sense to you. Thank you for reviewing! xoxox
Yes! Perfect! I have always tried to imagine what was going through Snape's mind as the last days ticked by, and you've captured everything I thought of, and then some, just magnificently. You are an extraordinary writer, and this story has been wrenching and affirming at once the entire way through.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm so happy to hear that we share a vision of Snape. I'm so glad that these chapters have made sense to you. Thank you so much, Emmeline!
doddy truely is a very special elf. this chapter really makes Severus seem human, breakable. this story makes it hard to imagen Severus going through these things on his own, without Hermione's support.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
You know, I think JKR really did have the right idea with Dobby. Is it weird that I'm more fond of him now that I've written him?I agree with you that Snape seems very breakable here, and I'm so glad, actually, that it seems that way to you, even though I hate it for him. Because I prefer him human, not some robo-spy, not like Dumbledore, some removed machine of spying and winning. I like to see him as a man who chose to do the right thing and who did it despite his own suffering. But yes, how he did it alone, I will never understand.Thank you so much for reviewing!!
I love how you started with Severus dwelling on his desire to live and reexamine things. It was truly a powerful and emotional moment. Thank you for brilliantly explaining away Dumbledore's possible reasoning behind the Elder Wand, and really just everything else. I can't thank you enough for doing justice to Dumbledore's character. Last but not least, another excellent writing of Hermione.

After reading some of the reviews I have to say it's interesting how we all react to Dumbledore's character. I completely think your Dumbledore is canon, but I still have a lot of respect for the character. His means are manipulative, but his end is sure as hell better than Voldy's.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Don't be shaken from your opinion by the onslaught of DD-hatred. I see where you are coming from, absolutely. And until I had to write DD for SL, I would have shared your opinion, in most ways.Because really, what he says is true. Someone has to look beyond who is in love with whom, and the fact that we all feel sorry for this person or that person and say, hey, this is war. And here is the best way for us to win. The Order was notorious for under-responding, I think. They went to war as if everyone would go home for tea or if it was raining, and the DEs were in it to win. DD was a very wise person. And he went to his own death willingly, which counts for something--he put his money where his mouth was. If there's a place where I break with DD and his methods, it has to do with his manipulation. Because I don't mind a ruthless general giving direct and terrible orders. But I do kind of mind one who tells you that you owe him, who reminds you of your mistakes and your shortcomings to make you believe that you have to do what he says. My goodness, I have rambled. All this to say, I'm glad that the Dumbledore I've written is close enough to canon to bring out everyone's canon response. I think he can be read many different ways. Thank you so much for reviewing! I really appreciate it. *hugs you*

You've of course explained it better than I could. There's manipulation and then there's manipulation. He's sort of that nagging and guilt-tripping mother we hear about who has good intentions and wishes you well, but the tactics leave much to be desired. I wouldn't call it evil, but it does harm nonetheless- maybe even a lifetime of therapy. I guess the same unnameable things that make me overlook Severus' faults also goes for DD.
I have only one word for this:AWESOME
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yeep! Thank you!
Poor Severus already in defeat before it is even finished. Way to go Hermione for her to do what she needs to bring him back and give him hope - good chapter and great writing.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you very much! I'm glad that you liked the chapter despite the darkness...
This is absolutely brilliant. I loved this chapter, and I'm already working myself up into a panic over wondering how the story is going to end. I love how you write the both of them -- how there is such raw emotion in the words that I can really feel what they are feeling and react to the situations myself. I applaud you!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! We're still a ways a way from the ending, so don't panic yet! :) I'm so glad that you like the story and that you are making this journey along with them. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Brilliant chapter. This story feels so "real" to me - moreso with each passing chapter. I wish I had better words to espress what I mean by that but "real" is all I can come up with. I think the real-ness comes from how authentic the characters and their actions feel to me. I really can't thank you enough for writing this. Please give us more soon.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I think I know what you mean, and I'm incredibly touched. I don't think there's a greater compliment to give an author. I just teared up, honestly.Thank you so much.
Ouch, Snape knows exactly how to slice to the bone. But Hermione told herself she shouldn't be doing what she was doing. Draco is a frightening boy, at this point. I thought his development in HBP was most intriguing, even though in the end he failed his mission, he did go though a lot building himself up, and that's always interested me. You've portrayed his fierce determination in this chapter very well.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree--Draco determined to complete the mission was very interesting. If I liked Draco, I'd write something about it, but secretly, I hate him. Don't tell. :)And yes, I think Snape hit Hermione where he knew it would hurt. Old habits die hard.Thank you so much for reviewing!
This chapter was very well written - I think it shows the best insight into how Severus Snape might truly actually despair. It was so realistic, my heart was panicking along with his...Truly intense and wonderfully written...
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much. I'm very glad that you saw it as realistically Snape, and though I'm sorry for the panicky feelings, I'm glad you could share his emotions. I really appreciate your review; Thank you!
Very powerful chapter! The intensity of Snape's decision to finally subvert Dumbledore... to the reader, it seems the obvious thing to do, but for Snape to change the habits of half a lifetime... once again, kudos to you for relaying the emotions so well!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! That's exactly how I see him--as fighting the habits of a lifetime. I'm glad you saw it that way too. Thank you for reviewing; I really appreciate it. :)
Brilliant, start to finish.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much, Mia. :)
I was worried about Severus there for a moment. I'm so glad Hermione showed up to keep him from sinking into despair. Great chapter, as always!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Honestly, I was too. Thank you so much for reviewing!

Beautiful.
Author's Response: *hugs you tight*
Thank you.
Exquisite. This is only getting better. I am so astounded by your talent. Thank you so much.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm undone by your praise. Thank you so much.
Awesome scene. Awesome review numbers. You must be very proud to get this response. I hope you have more stories after this
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm thrilled and terrified by the response. Thank you so much. More than anything, I'm just glad you like it.
Man, this is getting dark. Fortunately I am queen of the geeks and always carry a maglite in my belt, so I'm prepared. Seems the happy couple are less ready. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you handle the next couple of chapters, particularly your take on chapter 24. Keep 'em coming!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
It was a very dark section. It troubled me a lot, and for the first time, I think I'll be glad to be back in motion, for an action scene in which to do something and let their fears be pushed aside out of necessity. I'm awfully glad you have your maglite. Thanks for reading and reviewing!
You have done it---you have spelled out with piercing clarity, exactly what a MONSTER the so-called 'heroic' character JKR created in Dumbledore, truly is. And she still lauds him, though 'flawed', as she puts it, as 'heroic'! The woman doesn't know the meaning of the term. In Severus Snape is the very best of the highest qualities of the four Houses and their Founders: the brilliant intelligence of Ravenclaw, the steely courage of Griffindor, the sly but honorable cunning of Slytherin, and even the abiding loyalty of Hufflepuff. And yet, JKR cannot recognize her own creation---she calls Dumbledore a hero, and Snape a "deeply horrible person". Thank you, for doing what JKR apaprently could not pull off her own 'blinders' long enough to do---for seeing things as they ARE, and showing us how book 7 SHOULD have been written.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I could not agree with you more about Snape and Dumbledore. Shellsnapeluver is sitting with me right now and she says that she vehemently agrees. I cannot understand how JKR created such characters and seems to be as blinded to their natures as Harry himself. I'm glad you see those qualities in my Snape. It warms my heart considerably. Thank you for such a lovely review.
Didn't even make it half-way through this chapter before I was ready to kill Dumbledore myself! I don't think I've ever been so angry at a fictional character. So glad Dobby took it upon himself to fetch her.Wonderful fic!Looking forward to the next!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I agree--I would have slashed the portrait myself. Thank you so much. I'm so glad you are enjoying it.
This is SO much better than book 7. It actually gives meaning to the storyline and "into the forest, again..." isn't such a frustrating device.Thank you so much for salvaging the original story and making the characters live up to their potential!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm very flattered by your praise. Thank you! I'm glad that the story is satisfying to you. I hope you continue to enjoy it!
So does this mean that Snape is accepting going against DD? The last of DH is a bit foggy as it is the only book that I didn't read more than once. I mean, I know the outcome, and you said this is not Epilogue compliant, but I'm jsut trying to figure it all out. :)Can't wait to read the next installement.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, I don't think it will happen all at once, but I think that, at least in this round of the battle, he will agree to go against DD. Thank you for reviewing! More soon...
'He felt such a rush of affection for this silly, impossible girl; this lovely, insufferable girl; his brave, Gryffindor girl, that he reached out and used both hands to tuck her hair behind her ears. And then, cupping her jaw in both palms, he bent and kissed her.'And what a sweet and lovely kiss it was, too! In spite of thier wedding night, they really haven't shared much intimacy. This is a small step in the right direction. This story continues to amaze and entertain.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. I know I sound like a broken record, but I really, really do appreciate your thoughtful reviews. They touch me very much.
