Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Oh man! Good job! I am loving this story so much! Thank you for updating so quickly! I feel even more emotionally involved in what they were going through than I did when I read the actual DH. Thank you so much for adding so much amazing depth to a story that I already love!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your enthusiasm (and you're little cheering smiley! She's very encouraging!) More very soon...

Great chapter. It is getting more and more dense, gripping and full of suspense. Can't wait to read on :o) ...
Author's Response: Thank you so much!
Rip my heart out why don't you? That was....jaw-dropping. You know, I'm starting to suspect you of having your own magical abilities--it's the only explanation for the incredible coolness of this story! I never want to stop reading it!I've actually gone back and started reading SL from the beginning, (it's the only cure when I'm jonesing for a new chapter) and I'm struck all over again by the sheer enormity of this task you've set before yourself. To, essentially, re-write two massively long novels, from completely different perspectives, all the while not diverting from the original plot, but still adding in rich layers of characterization, dramatic tension, romance, humor and, to be quite honest, upping the quality of the writing overall. You should really be proud of yourself. It's quite an amazing feat!
Response from Georgiana (Reviewer)
Oh I forgot to mention how much I liked the continuity of her looking for mushrooms (and reminding me of one of my favorite romantic moments from SL: the "mushroom kiss"!). Also, Harry and Hermione sharing the spagetti and kind of re-bonding was really sweet and genuine. I do love Harry, despite his stupidity and hotheaded attitude, so it was nice to see him and Hermione caring for one another. Ron, who's that? ;-)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
No, don't say that, because Ron's coming back! :) But I'm really glad that you liked the bonding between Harry and Hermione. I love Harry, in spite of it all, and it's important to me that we see why Hermione loves him. You know, SL is too long for me to read from the beginning every time I sit down to write, but I try to look over the whole thing fairly often to make sure that I'm on track. But yesterday, I reread from Ashwinder (I usually just reread my own master document) and it felt so different to look at it that way. But I'm glad you hear that you're rereading. Thank you! I know it's a monster. I lost half the day to just rereading yesterday! As always, your reviews keep me heartened. Thank you so much,

Well, I'm kind of fond of the red-headed doofus, so it's not all bad to have him back. I just wanna smack him half the time, that's all. :)
An amazing chapter! Couldn't stop reading for a moment! You know, I used to dislike Snape, but a while back (before DH, which, by the way, is my least favorite i think) I read an amazing FF with him. And i really really love yours! I feel so terrible for him- I don't think I would've coped with how everubody is treating him, from all sides (and I think Dumbledore should be drowned in a toilet!)..Can't wait till next chapter!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Drowned in a toilet! That's a new one, but I heartily agree. I'm very glad find my Snape sympathetic. That's very good to hear. Thank you for reading and reviewing!
It is so in character for Severus to actually be grateful for being punished--though what exactly he has done to warrant being Crucioed at this point is beyond me. Voldemort is just lashing out at the nearest subject, and it is so sad that Severus accepts punishment just because Hermione has escaped. This is a particularly dismal period in the story for our poor hero, isn't it? He plays his part so well at Hogwarts that he is friendless and despised, he can't talk to the woman he loves because there are too many people listening in everywhere, and he is forced to spend Christmas with the greater of two evils, only because those evils are better hosts!I continue to be enthralled by the way this all fits into canon (and I refuse to go back to the book to see what's coming next or whether you've manipulated anything to suit this story, because at this point I like yours better, and I simply don't care what you've needed to do!).And the silver doe is coming!! Yahoo!!!!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
He is bound by his circumstances, that is true, and there is no time that I feel worse for him than when he is at Hogwarts--I think a person can find it in himself to endure certain finite situations--a holiday with the Malfoys, for example. But to live like that day in, day out? I think that would be crushing, and I feel dreadful for him. I'm glad that the canon parts are still working for you. And I'm thankful that you're not reading along with canon right now. Not because that makes my job easier or because I can tweak more, but because it makes it more like a story and less like a puzzle or a game. I never meant to rewrite canon. I just meant to tell this story and somehow canon got all tangled up in it! :)Yes, the silver doe is on the way. Expect her Thursday!xoxox
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Reviewer)
One of the things that makes this a true classic, however, is the way you are playing with canon and creating something that seems always to have been there. That's part of the brilliance of what you are accomplishing. You may not have set out to do it, but by god you're are, and I am in awe!I so look forward to Thursday!!
apparating mid-air whilst in crisis situation, now that's keeping a cool head! exciting chapter!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thanks! Yeah, I don't think I could have got away with that if JKR hadn't already established it as true!
Great chapter - cannot wait for more. Poor Severus - he gets all these punishments and now thinks he is somehow destined for them??? So sad.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
He does have a very difficult time in this chapter. I feel very badly for him. Thank you for reviewing!
Terrific!!!!!! But I think you wanted to say, "..he being baited?" instead of "bated".Cheers!CB
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, I goofed that one. I'll fix it straight away. :) Thank you!
Refresh me please what is the "Taboo" Hermione speaks about at the start of the chapter. I have tried to block out all of my memory of reading DH. That last sentence was like WHOA! I am sitting here shaking my head because I dont have the words to explain the impact of it. wow sister! wow.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked the last line. I'm just so glad to hear it. The Taboo is the thing that Voldemort put on his name so that anyone who says it can be instantly tracked. :)
All I can think to say is...poor Severus! The chapter was wonderfully written and I am looking forward to the next (as usual)!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! And yes, poor Severus, indeed.
Egads that scene at the graveyard with Harry was just wrenching. Great job in pointing out Snape's frustrations at Hogwarts, and addressing the fact that Harry made a mistake in not taking up Occlumency again.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm glad that you were able to go there with Harry. That makes me very glad. Because it's not his fic, you know? He got seven books already. But it's important to Hermione, and I hoped that the reader would feel the same sympathy for him that she did in that moment. I'm rambling. Thank you so much for reviewing! xoxo
It's agonizing reading about Snape's life as Headmaster and inability to find acceptance anywhere, even from dubious sorts like the Malfoys. The dinner "party" at the Manor was so well done -- all that chilly atmosphere and jealousy. And it was especially striking to see Snape's emotions all come full circle back at Godric's Hollow -- what a closing line! Terrific job.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so happy that you liked it. And I think more than anything I feel sorriest for Snape at Hogwarts. That's the part of his life that must be most unlivable, to me. It's one thing to endure a couple of days with Voldy, trading barbs with Lucius, etc, but to have to live like that, day in, day out...I'm very long winded tonight! Thank you so much for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

This might be your best chapter yet. This was edge-of-your-seat excitement all the way through. I loved each and every part of it. Small details, like Narcissa "flouncing" from the room, to Snape's emotional distress at anticipating Christmas dinner with only his staff, and feeling like... well, like he did in school days. The conversation b/w Voldemort and Snape was well-done, extremely natural, each sounding exactly as they should, I was just so impressed. Really. That may be the best written part, for me. I actually thought, "Holy shit! That's good!" LOL.
But the surprise for me was Harry. I just have not ever really liked Harry, for so many reasons. But in this chapter, you took away the extreme idiocy that JKR imparted him with, and made him... a boy. A boy who misses parents he never knew, is indeed a well of chaotic emotions, but showed sensitivities that I found previously lacking. I actually liked Harry! WTF! Now that is something.
All the way to the end. Man. Snape running, the two "Muggles" leaving, all of it. Wow. Breathless. Must read again. Good on ya, lady.
Author's Response: You said shit. hahahahaha.
But thank you so much! I'm very, very happy that you liked this one. And very happy to hear that you could like Harry for a minute. Even if it was just a minute.
xoxo
Another very good chapter. I like the feeling of unreality that Hermione has, like she's a bit removed. It must feel like that for her after months of fruitless searching. Then the fight with Nagini brings her sharply into the present. Well written.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I hadn't thought about it in quite that way, but I think you're right--that this is where she snaps out of the monotony of the tent and of the war in general and feels the immediacy of it again. Thank you for that! And thank you for reviewing!
<i>"Hermione, I must go. Be strong. I </i>will<i> come."</i>*melts into a puddle* What a hero! I'm going right on to read the next chapter...
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yay! I'm glad you liked that. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.
Another incredible chapter!Your writing continues to be spectacular ... this line went straight to my heart: "It felt like being in school again himself--subject to taunting and scorn no matter where he went. It felt like being Snivellus again"Bravo my dear friend!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you

. I'm so glad you liked it. :) xoxo
I'm so enjoying this retelling from a slightly different point of view! Great chapter... love hearing it from Snape's perspective.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm really glad you're enjoying it and glad you like Snape's perspective. He's such a pleasure to write.
You have a real hability to pick a very known story and, without betraying the facts, turn it in something entirely new.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much. That's a lovely compliment and I really appreciate it. There will be times down the road, where I will "betray the facts" a bit, but I will try to do it as carefully and respectfully as possible.
I think this might very well be my favourite chapter. The emotional side is wonderfully depicted. And I truely adore the end. Lovely writing.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
That means more to me than you know. Thank you.
Wow. Snape Crucio'd. I was wondering if he had been supposed to follow Voldy or if he was blowing his cover. I guess I'm glad he didn't but it's terrible that he's being punished. Thinking about DH, I guess this trio is certainly not going to make this road easy for him. Hope we get to see some more Snape/Hermione interaction soon. I'm trying to wrack my brain about each thing that's coming up from DH - Greyback, the Manor, Doby, Hogwarts... Well, I hope there'll be some more SS/HG interaction before that point. :) and I'm truly curious now if this is going to follow DH all the way to the finally or if you are going to put a twist on the end to make it "SL" *waiting in anticipation*
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
My dear: The Silver Doe! :) I don't know whether I should answer your questions or not...:) But I do have an EWE warning on this story, so perhaps that is all the answer you need.I am so pleased that you're still reading, and I hope you will stick with me. There's lots more to come.
Empty words! I am thrilled at how you manage to write dialogues without any content and the Dark Lord is loving it! I especially liked the ending where nothing repeats itself. I strongly hope that this will be the first hint of the fact that Severus will survive?! Great chapter!Kisses
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I love the way you said that. Empty words. Yes, they are a great pleasure to write--all that posturing and nonsense. And the way you said, "the ending where nothing repeats itself" gives me the shivers. Thank you SO much for reviewing.
Properly gloomy and worrysome. Looking forward to the sword episode.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! And I'm looking forward to that too.
She would never know that he took that punishment for her! The feelings they have for each other are becoming more and more muddled as they get deeper into this mess.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Well, maybe not. And I agree with you that their feelings are muddled... but I like to think of it as complex. :) Thank you so much for reviewing. xox
Oh my gosh, this just gets better and better, even though Snape and Hermione are apart! His emotion at the end made me tear up a bit-- to have to experience the same horrific even over again, esentially, to be there when the woman he loves might die at the hand of his 'master' and to not be able to stop it! Poor Severus!I loved it, as always.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you! I'm so glad that the ending scene worked for you--I felt very strongly about it, too, as I wrote it. And the next time that I decide it is a good idea to write a romance in which the main characters don't see each other for a year, hit me over the head with something hard, will you? :)Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. I really appreciate it.
Response from kizzy7 (Reviewer)
But you write the romance so well, even though they are apart! *will not hit you over the head**will send you much love and chocolate for this wonderful, amazing story*
