Seventh-year student Hermione Granger decides to marry the one eligible wizard who did not ask for her--the horrid but powerful Severus Snape. All is not sweetness and light. Be careful what you ask for. Or, as has been said by many a wise witch, "Marry in haste; repent in leisure." MLC

http://community.livejournal.com/sshg_awards/33422.html
Care of Magical Creatures recently received two awards on "Secrets of the Dark Vaults," a Russian fanfic site. Best NC-17 and Best Maxi Translation. The Nine-Year Plan was awarded Best Mini-Fic! I'm delighted to be in translation and to please the readers in Russia!

With the completion of Care of Magical Creatures my fanfic output is going to slow way down, but if you want to be sure to know when new fics post, please follow me on twitter. I don't tweet much, but I'll surely tweet that kind of thing.
About Mia
I came to the world of Harry Potter relatively early, after first resisting it because it just seemed too trendy. But when the first book came out in paperback in the US I picked it up at the airport when I was about to catch a flight, and two chapters in knew I would be ordering the original from amazon.co.uk in hardcover as soon as I landed.
I came to fanfic late, waiting until after I'd read DH. That means I've been totally obsessed with the fanfic world of Harry Potter, and most specifically the SS/HG ship, since August of '07.
I'm helplessly and hopelessly hooked.

You had me near or in tears for almost all of this chapter. Could definitely feel his desperation throughout. Can't wait (but, of course I will) to see his reaction to her waking! Hope she recovers quickly and completely.

Stunningly beautiful. There are no words, except your own, to do it justice.

Enormous touching, this whole chap of attempt after attempt to bring her back and the pure agony of not succeeding. Until the very end, and not on his own accord. I'm so very relieved that she's with us again.

I agree wholeheartedly with all previous reviews for this chapter. I bit my nails and was close to tears, too... On the other hand, I guess this was a very important process for Severus, to learn and realise everything that she has done for him and is to him. Like that old line from the song, "we don't know what we've got 'til it's gone".

Thank you. To me, this has always been a story about Severus and Hermione, and the Final Battle was simply something we had to get through to finally have their real final battle, and this was it.

I can see why you sweat blood over this chapter. And it is perfect, Mia---it is perfect.I so look forward to hear the first words they will say to one another, as well as to find out just what he did via that last potion and spell.Magnificent, as always.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you so much. I don't know about sweating blood but I was certainly salt-deprived for days afterward!

All that and he nver said "I love you"? He tried everything, gave nearly everything and he still couldn't say it. How sad. So Romeo and Juliet, she wakes just after he takes a poision.

(You might want to reread the end about that "taking the poison" thing.) It's true, isn't it? He hasn't told her that he loves her. Interesting.Thank you!

I can't figure out exactly what is going on here. I get that she's magically exhausted and that because he's the 'other half of her soul' that he should be the one to help her. However I just didn't follow details of what he was trying to do to revive her, especially at the end. In any case, it seems like she is not going to die just yet. That's a relief!

This is so heart-wrenchingly agonizing. How do you keep your spirits up writing such incredibly powerful, emotional, achingly wonderful angst? I suppose knowing the ultimate ending helps. I have chewed off all my fingernails in the past few minutes. Poor Severus! Beautifully done, Mia!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
During the writing, the waiting for it to post and then the waiting for reviews, my spirits have roller-coastered wildly. Thank you so much for giving me a high!

Oh, Mia you are cruel, cruel, cruel. How could you do that to poor S & H. I'm just glad you are bringing them back. Thanks for sharing the continued beautiful work.On a critical note, I think you need to give us a moment to catch our breath, bring us back down to earth after all of Severus's heart-wrenching despair. in the lines immediatly preceding or following Hermione's first words give us a beat. An observation. Something tangible, real, grounding. You're lifting your readers up into a sort of trance like grief. We know you're going to give Hermione back. Give us something human that Severus does when she comes back. Something to offset the despair, before you go for the grand (and it is beautiful) last line of the chapter.Just my humble opinion.

I'm just glad you didn't see the first way I ended this chapter. LOL!Thank you so much!

Mia,It's so hard to write these reviews without seeing the end of the story (write faster?) but I have to say that I also feel torn between my inner literary critic and inner fangirl. I don't know whether to applaud the beautiful tension you've been creating or SQUEEEE and have a virtual fit.So I'm sure I would have loved the first way you ended the chapter and now I'm really curious about it but I'll just have to trust that your Author's Eyes have seen fit to Make It Better. ;)Have I mentioned lately how glad i am to be reading this? I thought the fandom would die off after HBP and DH and then you and a couple of others (I'm also really loving Second Life right now -- mad props to Lariope) come out and write these really great fics that are interesting works of fiction in their own rights.I know I've said it before but I love the way you're working with the themes of trust/faith/love in this fic and I wanted to tell you that I think its really valuable, especially with the times we live in being such as they are. Rock on Mia!--HilariaPS, I think I'm addicted to these stupid emoticons. I can't resist there cute animatedness. Someone must've thought of what fangirls/authors would want to say with them.... suspicious....
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
It's odd because I came in within a few days of DH and started reading and fell in love with the MLC, not knowing it was also highly scorned. I thought maybe it was "yesterday's news" and that if I wrote it, I'd be dipping back years into fandom and writing something that everybody else was bored with, but I was encouraged on WIKTT when I asked about it, and dove in. So to find the reactions I've found has been unexpected and overwhelming.I'm thrilled with the new voices in the fandom even as I'm still having the thrill of discovering the classic voices, and there's no doubt that Lariope is both, so we can both fangurl her together! The first chapter ending I used was more of an evil cliffie and only hinted that she might be awake. I ended up with four people reading this chapter--my three betas and a RL friend who is a published author. Two loved the original more traumatizing, angsty ending, and two loved this one because it released the tension, and I ended up going with this one because I think I've had enough traumatizing endings for now. LOL! (They all liked both endings, and said it was really up to me, but each had a preference.) The interesting thing is that a number of reviewers evidently didn't know I was going to let Hermione live and thought I was going for a Romeo and Juliet thing. But I'm babbling.Thank you so much for your fabulous response. And I return your sentiment:

Just to clarify, re: the "angsty chappie"/"evil cliffie" I think that they are wonderful chapter endings when the work is completed but when we are reading along as you post and know it might be a week (or more!) before we find out that all is (hopefully) well then they become evil chapter endings and we readers want to withhold our Chocolate Author Biscuits. That's the nature of this medium.

That was so gut-wrenching and the pain! I was ready to rent my garments and put ashes on my head, I could feel Severus' desperation so acutely. I am so glad she is alive and that he sees how he has neglected to give her all the honor due her as his wife.Well Done!Livvy

OMG.Heart wrenching. Desperate. Intense.Exhilarating. Incredible. Just what happened there? I seem to have not caught what awakened her. His willingness to die? Tears? If it was tears she needed I could have provided copious amounts from about the first third of the chapter. She could just have used mine. He is always welcome to come and collect them for his beau.

AIIIII! Thank you for not killing her. That would have made me very sad, and probably mad. This story is absolutely wonderful. And I can't think of anything else to say.Well, maybe I can. I think you conveyed Severus' agitation and sadness and anguis and desperation extremely well. I was twisting my fingers together the whole time I was reading this. I was so worried about Hermione! Anyway... yeah. Thanks for not killing her and please update soon!!! ~Katie

My God.You never cease to amaze me. This was THE most brilliant chapter yet. Every scene was vividly painted; I felt as if I was there watching, even in the middle of the fight. Every emotion was raw and fitting and wonderfully written. My nose was nearly touching the screen, I swear! I love the moment Snape chose. I love the moment Draco admitted his role. I love the moment Snape and Hermione were together again.Beautifully written. You really are a master!
